Rest in Peace

Pasquale Carpino was 69.  He was the Singing Chef in his double-breasted, bright blue smock who starred in Italian cooking shows. While working at the CNE and walking through the Food Building during a lunch break in 1990, I saw Pasquale signing autographs.  I had never heard of him before

Jane Creba

I'm still getting a number of visits from people searching for information about Jane Creba, the 15-year old victim of the Boxing Day shooting in downtown Toronto.  I just permanently archived all of December's entries, so here are the ones relating to Jane and the violent tragedy that took her

The Devil's Plaything

Some say an idle mind is the devil's plaything.  I believe it's more correct to say boredom is the devil's plaything.  I woke up this morning, took a look at the layout for this site and was bored. It's a fresh year and I'm thinking about a fresh presentation.  I

Canada 3, United States 2

We've once again earned a bye to the semifinal game Tuesday night by finishing first in Group A.  A big win over the USA was sealed when captain Kyle Chipchura scored an empty-net winner with 33 seconds remaining.  Our junior team has won its last ten games. I've witnessed nothing

My Quote of the Week

"The Old Year has gone.  Let the dead past bury its own dead.  The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time.  All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!"      - Edward Payson Powell

Staying Up 'Til Midnight

I was just talking with Taryn about what's going on in the city and on television tonight as we welcome 2006.  We were trying to remember the last time one of us was actually awake when the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve.  We were guessing it's been a

Hitch

Hitch: 5 out of 10. "Are We There Yet?" left such a bad taste in my mouth, I hadn't seen a feature film since.  "Hitch" was a great deal better, but anything would seem better by comparison.  It's a pretty safe romantic comedy that doesn't suck but doesn't deliver many

Regarding Mona's rant and Boon's justification of her nearsighted and racist post, let's be reminded that the identity or race of the shooter who's bullet struck Creba have not been identified.

Canada 4, Norway 0

I didn't watch a lot of this game because the Leafs game was far more exciting.  What I did see in the first period was disappointing.  I suppose it's unfair to compare this team with last year's team which may just be the finest junior squad we've ever assembled.  Dion

Canada 4, Switzerland 3

That was close!  Penalty after penalty made it a game of special teams.  I must say, we didn't look very good and not nearly as polished as last year's squad.  We're supposed to handle these teams with ease.  Canada is 16-0 all-time versus the Swiss in the world junior tournament.
