As I age, there are things I used to care about that I no longer care about, and things I didn't care about that I suddenly do care about. I'm sure this is true for everyone. It would be strange if we were the same person at 22 that we are at 52.
As a youngster, getting into popular music, I used to care a great deal about which songs went to #1, or at least broke the top ten. I had my rooting interests, like it was a sporting event.
In particular, I used to get very excited the rare time a Canadian artist went to #1. It didn't happen often, and when it did, I felt rather patriotic, like we had won an Olympic gold medal. With this very blog, I used to post every time a Canadian artist went to #1, even as it became commonplace. Then, in an era of streaming, I completely lost interest. Another #1 for Drake? The Weeknd? Justin Beiber? Yawn.
Now my interest level in the Billboard Hot 100 is near zero. It's been that way throughout the 2020s. Still, I read this article about 20 Songs Notoriously Blocked From #1 on the Hot 100 This Decade with great interest. I had no idea...
