How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Midges

I hated the midges during my first spring living by the lake. At the time I didn't even know they had a name. I just knew there were swarms of annoying bugs everywhere and I even biked wearing a balaclava to avoid ingesting dozens of them at a time. Yes, even in twenty degree weather I donned a balaclava because of these damn bugs.

Last spring, they bothered me far less. I stopped wearing the balaclava and stopped complaining about the midges. After all, they're harmless.

This spring, I see them as a sign summer is indeed coming. It's a springtime tradition on and near the waterfront in this city, and I'm not going to let them bother me. I pick them out of my eyes and nose and consider it bonus protein when they get in my mouth.

The midges aren't going anywhere and neither am I, so I learned to stop worrying and embrace this slice of life in south Toronto.

Are they midges or gnats? I've heard them called the latter recently.

I was on great run on the Martin Goodman Trail last week when I got a mouthful of these bugs.

As I was chocking, I didn't have the enlightened attitude about them that you have, Mike.

@John M.

It took me three springs to adopt this new attitude.

And they're definitely midges. Lots of good info on that in the comments of this entry:

Still hate them. Thanks for the reminder/warning about the lake.

Not even near the lake (but close to the Don) I was biking up Bayview Ext., one day when one somehow got behind my sunglasses and splattered on my eye ... extraction was rather complicated and I had to discard my contact to get it all.

I never have found a good way to keep them out of my mouth ... keep meaning to try tying some kind of cloth under my nose.

They were bad in Parkdale, at least on Queen.

When they're out, I'd prefer to stay in.

You do not love them. I call bullshit.

You're right, I just couldn't resist that clever title.

But I have warmly embraced them. Each and every one of them.

Especially the ones I eat.

So, Mike, you love them all. Every one. There is not one you do not like. Not one?
