What do you prefer to use-- the trackpad on your laptop, or an external mouse?

@Lorne

On my MacBook Pro I use the trackpad.

If I have "power work", I move to the deskop anyway. If I had "power work" to do and it had to be on the laptop, I'd likely plug in the external mouse.

May 24, 2013 @ 9:36 AM

Argie

Mike,

When you pick your nose, do you use your left hand fingers or your right hand fingers?

May 24, 2013 @ 9:38 AM

Lyle Lanley

External mouse for me. I HATE the trackpad.

Outstanding song list.
Any plans for a show in the Halton Hills area?

May 24, 2013 @ 9:52 AM

@Toronto Mike: Thanks, I thought you'd dig it. Any free tips on getting our site a good search ranking in google?

@Speysidephil: We'll play wherever will have us. If you know a good venue in that area, let me know...better still, let the venue owner know about us.

May 24, 2013 @ 10:17 AM

@AL - Like Mike said, I dig the song list. I'll have to figure out a way to see you guys. Kudos on the creativity and writing. The "about" page is well-done.

Does anyone have any intention of giving the new Indie 88.1 in Toronto an ear when it launches? Love or hate him, Alan Cross has a new gig there: http://www.alancross.ca/a-journal-of-musical-things/2013/5/21/so-i-have-a-new-gig-indie88toronto.html

Me, I like the fact that the GTA finally has an alternative (yes, pun intended, as I stream Halifax's Live105), so I expect to be listening from time to time.

@Douglas: Thanks! We're working on getting some shows in the city...hopefully closer to the end of the summer or in the fall. As for the new station...the only terrestrial radio I listen to now is the FAN...everything else is online or podcasts.

@Douglas.

I too am very curious about when Indie 88's going live, and I've been listening to the demo stream, and so far I generally like what I'm hearing. Musically i've heard predominantly new music but some classic stuff too like Talking Heads. I've also heard some station id's and bumpers Alan's voiced, and to me it is reassuring that he's involved.

I actually discovered a neat "electro pop" track there called Runaway Love by Toronto's Diamond Rings. The lead singer is straight outta the gender ambidextrous 80's, and he looks like a hybrid of a white male Grace Jones and Brigitte Neilsen in Rocky 4.

Would love to know when the station actually launches. I'll be listening.

May 24, 2013 @ 10:44 AM

@Douglas,

Who could hate Alan Cross!?

88.1's made me the most excited about radio I've been since the mid-90s.

Cheryl

I'm mad. The Bruins lost last night. This sucks. I know, I know. I said I wanted seven games, and they lose game 4, but the next game is on at 5:30 tomorrow afternoon. The time sucks because I already planned something and will probably have to miss a good part of the game. If the Bruins would have won last night, they could have rested and there wouldn't be a game tomorrow, but again they should have decided to either play the game at noon or 1:00 tomorrow or tomorrow night starting at 7:00 like normal. My thing tomorrow starts at 4:00 and it will be over by 7:00, but won't be over at 5:30. the Bruins should have won last night, not the Rangers.

Anyway, I don't know or don't care about the modern music you guys talk about. You guys don't know what's good. You don't like Bob Seger or John Mellencamp. They're great singers.

May 24, 2013 @ 10:55 AM

@4x4 Time

The lack of time Ford spends at the office or in meetings is well documented.

Ford Nation seems to be fine with that because we hear how Rob Ford's always on his cell phone returning calls.

The fact is, Rob Ford does give out his cell number to everybody and will talk to anybody, but he's the damn mayor. That's not his job.

Rob Ford doesn't do his job.

May 24, 2013 @ 11:54 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

One thing this mayor's term has taught us Torontonians is how limited the power of the mayor actually is.

On day one, Ford said he's kill Transit City. I remember hearing that, wondering if he had that power and looking it up. Here's what I wrote way back then: http://www.torontomike.com/2010/12/rob_ford_cant_kill_transit_cit.html

Rob Ford can say Transit City is dead, but it's going to council and he's only got one vote out of 45. One of 45... just keep repeating that to yourself - it helps.

The fact is, the city runs fine without him. He could disappear and council wouldn't miss a beat... he's just one of 45 votes and without influence he's got no more power than any other councillor.

And at this point, with the way he's handling this controversy, he's political poison. He's almost completely irrelevant and the three-ring circus he's creating merely makes it harder for the rest of council to do their jobs.

@Argie

A good mayor (i.e. politician) is someone who runs the city effectively and efficiently. A good mayor is not always liked but is known to get the job done.

An excellent mayor is someone who not only accomplishes the above but also has the ability to motivate those around him (staff and voters) into achieving higher goals and cementing a shared vision for the future. This is leadership.

A good mayor does not necessarily have to be a leader.

Ford didn't explicitly call Towhey a liar, obviously. It requires a little inference.

But we know he was fired for telling Ford to go away and get help: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2013/05/23/toronto-ford-towhey.html

Indeed.

Of course, Ford doesn't answer questions like that.

This an admittedly unscientific poll but I found it interesting. Unintentionally eavesdropping on a loud conversation by a pod of four passengers on the GO train, Milton line. Demographic: all female, 3 white, 1 black, all roughly 40-50. ALL very vociferous and adamant that Ford is innocent, and this was yet another attack by a biased media.
Yes, it's ridiculous to infer anything based on this, but I believe that without the video evidence which would have forced Fords resignation, this isn't going to hurt him anymore than any of the other unsubstantiated charges.

There are 3 types of people I don't think should be anywhere near public office in any way, shape or form. People who misuse public funds (Duffy), drug addicts (Ford, allegedly), and people who hold back on paying the very taxes that give them the money they'll be later misusing (Benskin). Since both the left and the right are guilty, let's put the moral indignation for political purposes on the shelf, toss all 3 in jail and wait for the next one. Failing that, just sit back, relax, and hope your personal choice to replace any of these folks doesn't turn up wita a thing for kids or something. As someone once said, this is getting ridiculous.

May 24, 2013 @ 8:19 PM

Tron

There's been a couple of interesting side story in this. One of them is that for the first time since he came in office the media is doing their JOB. Ford seriously thought if he just did his normal "Damn star, ridiculous" and the story will just pass (like every other story he lied about) But the media stayed on him STORNG, not just The Star, everybody. It's like the international recognition embarassed them as much as anything, maybe their peers from other cities asked "Why is the Wtar the only people who have a history reporting on him?" The Sun & Globe pushed hard the "Go to rehab" story.

Even today after the denial you can tell there is anger in the media, they want to ask questions, I don't think they will stop until they can ask questions, Doug Ford being Doug didn't help matters much giving a bunch of non-answers answers and then dissing the media and saying he will stop if they talk over him and then stop anyway just after a couple of questions. In the past hour Michele Mandel (who more of a legit news person in the Sun) wrote an artile with her first sentence was "Too little, too late" this is somebody FROM THE SUN! Can't believe I saying this, Read Mandel SUN article, it's an amazing piece

Doug Ford was on John tory show, Tory asked why it was a week, Ford give some mumbo jumbo about lawyers dotting i's and crossing t's. Of course Tory has no spine to say as a former lawyer that is ridiculous, but he just allowed Ford to say that, of course writing up a careful speech takes a day or two, not a week! The Fords might be able to go to weakling radio or TV people like Tory and LeDrew (wait they both lost to Miller, just thought of that, strange) but I think the papers and TV reporters like Global's Proskow (who really been the best City hall reporter on TV)

Question media needs to ask, why wait a week? What changed within the week to make you be able to speak? Why are you photographed with drug dealers in casual wear? (I believe the photo has been verified, but the photo has been lost in the shuffle because of the video hype)? Have you taken drugs in the during your term?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/globe-investigation-the-ford-familys-history-with-drug-dealing/article12153014/?page=all

This investigative report reveals that:

Doug Ford, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s brother, sold hashish for several years in the 1980s.

Another brother, Randy, was also involved in the drug trade and was once charged in relation to a drug-related kidnapping.

Their sister, Kathy, has been the victim of drug-related gun violence.

In the 1980s, anyone wanting to buy hashish had to know where to go. And in central Etobicoke, the wealthy Toronto suburb where Mayor Rob Ford grew up, one of those places was James Gardens. In the evening, the sports cars often wound along Edenbridge Drive, past the gated homes and the lawn-bowling pitches, until they reached the U-shaped parking lot. By nightfall, the public park was a hash drive-thru. One former street dealer, whom we will call “Justin,” described the scene as “an assembly line.”

Wow. Lots of detail and new information here.... particularly damning for Doug Ford, but also shedding light on who this Director of Logistics David Price really is.

I'm glad this is from the Globe so Ford Nation can't dismiss it as "another Toronto Star attack".

May 25, 2013 @ 8:10 AM

No Dope

It's about time the Star got some help covering these clowns.

What a family! So much drugs.... everything makes so much sense now.

And David Price wasn't Rob's football coach, he was Doug's right-hand man in the drug dealing game.

Okay. I know I said I wanted the thing to go seven games, every series. It's just that the time of the game sucks because I have something planned for today. Actually it did get moved a half hour or so ahead to 3:30 instead of 4:00 but it may not finish at 5:30 when the game starts. Okay, to the guy who is going to text George Smitherman to text Gary Betman, tell them to have the game at noon. That way in case it goes to overtime, it will still end on time. The reason I'm mad is because of the conflict. Why did they choose to have 5:30 for this game. Anyway, the Pens won last night again. doesn't matter. The Bruins are going to beat them and then beat Chicago. As for baseball, it sucks. Jays suck, but baseball sucks.

The investigation by the G&M is only the beginning & you can bet there will be more information released. Given Rob's "interesting" past, people will really start to pay attention. Those who remained quiet will suddenly speak up. Contrary to what so many of Ford Nation has said this was not a witch hunt. Now it will become a witch hunt. Rob Ford is like a record label in 2000 confronting MP3s. He's going to ignore, deny and sue but it's not going to work

One thing is that Ford doesn't seem to understand how life works. Whether you're a gangster, thug, computer hacker, politician or in business rule 1 of the game is to always respect others. The second you start ruffling feathers is the second people will make it their personal goal to wipe you out. Mr. Ford seems to lack the capacity to understand that.

The information released about Doug Ford being a dealer is delicious if you ask me. In many other situations, one might write it off as the stupidity of misguided youth. But it won't be seen that way and here is why. You see, the right-wing has put forth great effort telling us we should judge a person by their past. You know, how Bob Rae should always and forever be associated with his years as NDP leader. You know, how Justin Trudeau should be judged because in the past he was a school teacher. The public are going to say well you want us to judge THEM by their past so why not Doug Ford?

Finally, the claim that the media is smearing people is absolutely nonsense. The idea of the media is to question & attack politicians and investigate them. To quote most right wing people "if you've got nothing to hide then why would you worry". Media is supposed to question the government not be it's 3rd party spokesman.

The Ford's are done. Finished. They'll do everything they can to hang on to power but it's not going to work.

May 25, 2013 @ 11:31 AM

Tom

You are right Mike, he has the video.

Gawker cant get in touch with the Somalis, then after 6 days Ford finally tells us all he never smoked crack calling everyone liars, fires his Chief of Staff, seems more confident.....ya he bought it.

Now the Globe is on the trail too. This is getting good.

TORONTO STAR - All the news that's fit to print and even if it isn't they'll print it anyway. And if it's not news, they'll make it up.

So Doug Ford allegedly sold hash in the 80's. How is that a story or relevant now?? Every day that goes by I hate journalists a little more.

And while I'm in a bad mood....Roger Centres bumped the price of a beer from 9.50 to 10.00 screwing the concession workers out of tips and gouging the fans at the same time. I guess the billions they make just isn't quite enough.

How relevant is it that justin trudeau was a ski instructor or a teacher? Yet conservative s paid millions on tv ads pointing that out.

@Gary

Good point. I was never a "badass" but I've certainly indulged in a few things earlier in life that I'm not exactly proud of today. My life at age 16-21, and my judgement, was a helluva lot different then than it is today at age 49. If those not so proud moments can be turned into knowledge and wisdom, then you'll probably grow up ok.

@Ben Vidal

My wife works with teachers, though she is not one herself. There's a lot of damn good teachers out there, many of whom are highly intelligent and have a worldly perspective to offer to those who will listen. Can someone show me evidence that a "career politician", who got in on the ground floor, is any better at his/her job than someone who jumped into politics later on?

The point of the above two paragraphs is you can't teach wisdom and you can't cure stupidity. You have to accomplish both all by yourself.

It's relevant because Dougie drug selling running buddy from back in the day (David Price) is on the tax payers payroll as "Director of Logistics" a position that nobody seems to know what he does, what's his qualifications, what's his purpose, how he got it. When asked Drug Ford why he brought in Price his reply is "you can’t teach loyalty" (whatever the F that means, that just sounds drugland lingo). He seems to just hover around the Fords and pass out magnets.

Fully expect the souless Ford Nation to spin is as "Hey just did some drugs in HS, so what" or "selling a bit of weed at HS" but the story is talking of a much more sophisticated high-level drug trade going on. That he and his brother sold the stuff while in there 20s and were high level volumn. I thought Conservatives were against the young offenders act and were tough on crime (even weed) but now it's "Come on he was young, and it's just weed". The Drug culture that went on in the Ford house is something out of a mafia film.

Dougie is doing the media rounds, and yup he sounds total insane talking about "Social elites". There is a full uncut interview of him with my favorite TV city hall reporter Global's Proskow. Dougie claims it will be edited, so Global put the entire thing up on their website unedited, and glad they did. Made Doug look even crazier. Says he smoked weed in HS, then says never touched drugs. Accused Proskow & most media of doing drugs and asked if he did so (of course Jackson isn't a public offical but that seems to go over Drugie head) and 90% of politicans are leeches so by my count 40 out of 44 councilers are leeches in Ford mind.

Hate to pat myself on my back, but I called it about the media now pushing hard against the Fords. Lets say the Fords have used their experience "of the street" and brought it to politics with bullying and intimidation of news orginations by saying if you come after the Fords, we will come after you. But after seeing the international recognition The Star got for there work on the Fords, the other newspapers are telling the Fords to shove their bully tactics up their butts and the Globe found their spine and went with the story. Wish they did a better job editing it though, the meat of it might be lost with the other things.

May 25, 2013 @ 4:43 PM

Gary

Tron - you make some good points. Honestly, I don't know what to believe anymore. I do find it a bit puzzling that The Globe is not allowing comments on their story but do allow comments on their other stories. I find that a bit cowardly.

I think we've just stumbled on a damn good reason there's no such thing as an honest politician. Someone thinks you've done something, whether you have or not, and your family's fair game. Even if you've got a clean record, or a very minor criminal record (come on, if DWI was anything major there'd be a lot fewer people with driver's licenses), you're still screwed. I haven't done anything more than shoplift at age 13 and I'll be steering clear of anything and everything requiring a public image. Because people in my family are idiots, and that's just the crap I know about from a year ago. They're going back 30 years on the Fords, and not even focusing really on the one they're accusing. 30 years is more than enough time to kick an adiction, provided there's an adiction to be kicked--and provided that adiction has anything remotely to do with Rob's still as yet unverified crack adiction.

@Rick C: I did include a link in my other comment. I'm guessing the software didn't care for it much. Sorry.

Well, Bruins won. That's great. They won 3 to 1 so they play Pittsburgh and will win in seven games. Hopefully I don't have anything planned when a game is going to be on. Bruins win over Pittsburgh and then Beat Chicago in seven to win the cup. You'll see. This is how it will go this year. too bad there will be a couple months with just boring baseball after hockey is finished. Anyone for hockey all year round? That's a good idea to have hockey all year round. Baseball is slow and boring. Let's have a baseball lockout. It can last a couple years.

That's written by Adrienne Batra, Rob Ford's former press secretary. She's very well connected to Ford's inner camp so when she writes this it's absolutely damning.

What his current and former experienced staffers have advised him to do is to get a driver, stop calling constituents late at night, get some rest, and as the Sun reported, go to rehab.

She has no doubt his current staffers are urging the mayor to go to rehab.

This is all going to get worse before it gets better.

@james: No worries, wasn't complaining, you were just ahead of the curve on the story and I hadn't heard of this guy. The shady ones are in all the political parties. I agree too with the nutty family members that would drag your public life into the ground, mine family included.

Lorne

@Mike re: The Globe.

Everyone knows The Globe is just a leftist liberal commie rag that is out to (and in fact ALWAYS has been out to get) and discredit the Ford Nation. They'll make up anything and lie through their teeth just to further their conspiracy against the Mayor. They're nothing but biased liars.

I guess that leaves-- umm-- (checks the boxes on the street corner-- not the blue one, not the red one, not the other red one-- ah, the yellow one)-- The National Post left as the only sane and intelligent paper who will actually publish THE TRUTH.

May 25, 2013 @ 9:33 PM

Not Mike

Lorne, if you pay any attention to the writers at the NP, many of them are quite critical of Rob Ford. Clearly you have not read the paper nor read the opinion of their writers.

To be blunt and frank, you're just another stupid Ford Nation idiot with his head in his ass. Go for a walk, preferably near the railway tracks.

May 25, 2013 @ 10:17 PM

james

@Not Mike: I actually think Lorne was being mostly sarcastic. Albeit you're correct in your NP assessment.

This whole mess has just jumped off the track. Now the storyline escentially is Rob has to be into the crack, because 30 years ago, Doug was (again, allegedly) dealing hash. God help anyone who's mother, brother, sister, cousin did something stupid 30 years ago. You don't have to be drinking the coolade to think somebody's reaching just a little.

May 25, 2013 @ 10:35 PM

james

Also useful to point out: the Globe's been doing this research for 18 months, say articles that are feeding off the original. At the risk of being branded a Ford nation idiot, who's to say this wouldn't have come out anyway--just with a different spin? If anything, the Globe's article does more damage to Doug than it does to Rob. Which, if I were the conspiracies type, would play right into some narative about the Globe trying to get out in front of a possible run with the provincial conservatives. Fortunately for everyone involved, conspiracy theories hurt my head.

@Cheryl: A Habs fan cheering for the Bruins? Wouldn't that be the equivalent of a Habs fan cheering for Toronto?

It's go Pens till the end for me.

On a side note, I've got my media player on shuffle and just as I was about to click post, Metallica's version of Turn The Page came on. Just had to throw that in.

The bruins saved my life. They beat the Leafs. My Habs are gone unfortunately. I'm cheering for the Bruins. I hate the Pens as well. I can't stand Crosby. I really can't. This is just the way it is. Hawks over Wings in seven. Sharks over Kings in seven. Hawks over Sharks in seven. Bruins over Pens in seven. Bruins over Hawks in seven to win the cup. Sorry guys, but that's just the way it is. Just hope the Bruins Pens games are on at times when I can listen to them.

The Bruins are to Habs fans what the Habs are to Leafs fans.

No true Leafs fan would ever, ever root for the Habs. By rooting for the Bruins, you're revealing yourself to be an untrue Habs fan.

May 26, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

My point exactly. Was really hoping the Rangers would take out the Bruins but that didn't happen.

May 26, 2013 @ 11:35 AM

Pittsburgh is getting stronger by the day, so if they stay the course, they should be able to take out the Bruins.

May 26, 2013 @ 12:12 PM

Okay. Well, maybe I'm different. I can't stand the Pens. I will not cheer for Crosby and you guys can't make me. You never know what will happen. Just wait and see. Crosby will get injured again. The Bruins can do it. Just wait.
