Target-Free Open Mike

Open MikeConfession Time: I don't care at all about Target coming to Canada. I'm not even a little curious to visit one and I'm not sure I understand all the hype. It's just another Walmart, right?

There, now I feel better. What's on your mind?

Rob Ford drunk and groping a woman?

Who else isn't shocked one bit.

That's out mayor!

I'll give your comment a little context.

Here's Sarah Thompson's Facebook photo:

Here's what she wrote: "Thought it was a friendly hello to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford at the CJPAC Action Party tonight until he suggested I should have been in Florida with him last week because his wife wasn't there. Seriously wanted to punch him in the face. Happy International Women's Day!"

And she says "he grabbed my ass during the pose".

Of course, Rob Ford denies this ever happened.

March 8, 2013 @ 9:29 AM

Another Lurker

I'll give the mayor one thing: he sure knows how to dominate headlines.

He's a talk radio host's wet dream and 640 and 1010 should send him flowers nightly.

March 8, 2013 @ 9:35 AM

I'm out in Edmonton right now covering the Brier and some of the guys who live here said to me this morning before I fired up the computer...
"Heck of a Mayor you got there."
I said he's not my Mayor anymore, but he sure knows how to make headlines.

He said - she said - oh Toronto.

At least the curling's good.

If I go to my address bar, and type "t", the first page that shows up is (followed by "Trade-In Values", and, a news site about the band Tool). The same is true on both my home and work computers.

Not sure when took over the top spot for "t", but congratulations, Mike. This should be a proud, watershed day for you. =)

Ok, I'll bite.

Please explain to me the allure of Target coming to Canada. Do people think the cheap USA pricing is also coming here? The laws of economics tell me those people will be sorely mistaken.

In essence, isn't this just another Walmart on its way? How is a minimalistic infrequent consumer like me supposed to get excited about that?

I'm happy that you're happy that Target is here, but I really don't care. I'll probably just miss the Club Zed ads.

March 8, 2013 @ 11:15 AM

Mike, I agree about the Target arrival. However, there are plenty of clueless people who will flock with the other sheep to these stores. Why? Because its new and something a little different from Wal-Mart. There will the initial fascination with it being new but in the end it will likely be just another Wal-Mart. One difference - I hear they do have many famous brands that WM doesn't offer.

Oh and I saw Zero Dark Thirty - all I've got to say is "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!"

I'd love to see one of the many Ford apologists on this site try to defend the mayors latest blunder....

March 8, 2013 @ 11:59 AM

Back to Rob Ford... I do not condone his actions, but I have to ask : did she confront him then and there? Did she slap him across the face? Did she file any type of police report? Or did she look to seek out a ton of attention for herself? What I am saying is that her way of dealing with it was wrong. She is asking for an apology via the media and facebook. I think she is leveraging this for her own purpose. Ok .. everybody attack..

March 8, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

@miss. Phil

OK Phil, nothing to defend, you haven't heard his side of the story yet,but you have obviously made up your mind!
Rick2 is correct, she handled whatever happened very poorly, it could have been settled then and there but no she had to go the social media route.
Very suspicious.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:16 PM

How about my Habs. They won last night. PK Subban is hot. He had a goal and an assist. Yes, there is curling in Edmonton. boy, I hope Howard doesn't win it all. Give someone else a chance. My trainer didn't make it to the Brier, but would have been nice for someone from Ontario other than Howard to have made it. Maybe next year. Oh well, as for Ford, he did another dumb thing. We really should have all voted for George Smitherman. My trainer really voted for him.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:27 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Speysidephil - I'll freely admit that there were other ways to handle the situation, however lets not turn this into blaming the victim. Rob Ford allegedly made unwanted sexual comments and grabbed her ass (I do say allegedly).

The man is an embarrassment. This is not a comment on his fiscal policy, or on whether he coaches football. This is about Rob Ford's actions as a person, which are deplorable. He flips the bird to a mother and daughter who called him on driving while using a cell phone, he gets drunk and makes an ass of himself too often, he makes inappropriate comments on what sometimes seems like a weekly basis. There is more to being mayor than simple fiscal responsibility.

I'm not militantly opposed to Ford like others on this site. I am not decisively left wing or right wing, but I see a man who embarrasses the city of Toronto pretty much every time he opens his mouth.

You accuse me of making up my mind, I have not. If this turnes out to be a lie, I will freely admit it and apologize. I do however tend to believe that the bare bones of the story are true based on Fords track record of making an ass of himself when he's been drinking (which is far too often...the man does have a drinking problem).

But Ford supporters do not want to hear logic, they are right and the rest of us are wrong...much like Republicans to the South of us.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:27 PM

@Miss. Phil
OK Phil so now he was drinking and has a drinking problem?
Even she said that there was no alcohol on his breath and he wasn't slurring his words.
His staff has said he was drinking water all night.
But hey lets all bring up past allegations and hang him.
But I could be wrong just lets wait to hear the whole story.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:38 PM

No Dope

Rob Ford is a notorious alcoholic and anyone who knows him or has worked with him can attest to this fact.

He's a functional alcoholic, but an alcoholic nevertheless.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:40 PM

And I say this not to point fingers and laugh, but in the hopes he'll finally get help for this disease.

It is a disease. The man is sick.

I don't know, she looks just as hammered as he does to me..

March 8, 2013 @ 12:45 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Spey - I'll absolutely wait for the whole story, there is definitely more to this story than she lets on, but please don't tell me you look at that picture and doubt that Mr. Ford would fail a sobriety test.....

Yes, this woman is using this event to springboard her own political doubt about that, but please don't try and tell me he's not drunk there.... and, yes, the man has a drinking problem, numerous examples of that to be found. I'd rather not have to go find examples for you, but I will if necessary

March 8, 2013 @ 12:51 PM

I believe it should be written in the Canadian Constitution that you MUST leave feedback whenever you purchase an item on eBay.
I've sold two things on eBay in the last yet neither of my buyers have left feedback despite receiving their items quickly and in good condition. I followed their progress using the tracking number(s) Canada Post gave me so I know they got everything.
I'm not an eBay merchant, just some guy who has crap to sell. Feedback helps build trust between users and discourages unscrupulous sellers/buyers
The penalty for not leaving feedback should be at least 5 years in a medium security facility.
Or if that's not possible such a pinch.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:53 PM

4x4 Time

Our company sells to both Target in the US and now here in Canada. I can tell you -

1. The Canadian retail price will be almost 8% higher than the same items in the US stores today.
2. Our NET NET margin (after all trade dollars freight etc.) is about 9% less than the US business.

All Target is going to do is further fragment an already crowded retail mass market trade channel. There will be no market growth. It will likely expedite the demise of SEARS which is on life support, and generate some price wars which should benefit consumers.

My humble opinion.

March 8, 2013 @ 12:59 PM

I dont want to keep this Ford debate going but its not illegal to drink in this province. So what if he was drunk? Does that mean he should be turfed from office?

March 8, 2013 @ 1:37 PM

There is an interesting story and possible twist in the Toronto Sun about the Rob Ford story. Check it out on the front page online.

Who is a better choice for a fiscally responsible Mayor next term - Rob Ford or Olivia Chow?

March 8, 2013 @ 2:25 PM

519 Rob

As a 519er, and proud Guelphite, I went to Target this week. It's imprtant to note I went only because it is next to a Metro, and I was going there anyway. I did NOT make a special trip, but I couldn't resist taking a look around (especially since I am also a former Zellers employee).
I've only ever been to a US Target a few times, so I am not sure I noticed any huge price differences.
I think what most people have to remember is that they are a basic mass-merchant. They sell laundry soap, tooth paste, underwear and batteries, as do those 'other' guys.

Will I go back to Target?
Of course.
Will it change my life?
Not at all.

I cannot understand why people would even believe Ssarah Thomson as she is a known compulsive liar. If this was legitimate (it isn't), should her course of action been a police report for sexual harassment?
What is really disturbing, that the story is alleged, but Thomson's threat of violence is real.
This is exactly what we teach our kids not to do. Bullying with lies, and physical violence.
People like Sarah Thomson make me sick.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:29 PM

Dave Williams

@ 4X4 Time, the answer is/was clear who is best fiscally for our city. Lets just hope that he wants to keep going. What these sawney trolls are doing to this man are inhumane.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:33 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - no, not illegal to drink at all. I would not turf him form office for drinking. However, if you can't be in control of your behavior when you do drink, then maybe you need to reevaluate when is an appropriate time to drink.

@ Dave - I know next to nothing about this woman. If she is lying then I would lambaste her as much as I do Ford. If this turns out to be a complete fabrication by a manipulative woman who saw a drunk Rob Ford and decided to take advantage of the situation, well then shame on her.

However, Ford supporters such as Dave and Argie should want this man to get his drinking under control. To me, and my extensive alcohol training (and that's not a joke, I have received alcohol training from SmartServe, the AGCO and Peel Regional Police) , Rob Ford looks extremely intoxicated in that picture. The mayor of a Major city should NEVER be that drunk in public. We all like to tie one on, and on occasion drink too much, but a person such as Rob Ford should control his behavior in public. Denying what is an obvious drinking problem does Ford and his supporters no good at all.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:37 PM

Mississauga Phil

Oh, and just for the record. I agree with most of Fords fiscal policies. He has the right idea and attitude for eliminating entitlement in the city. But that message gets lost in the sideshow that is Rob Ford. If the man could get his mouth, temper and drinking under control, I'd vote for Ford every time.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:39 PM

4x4 Time

@Dave Williams - Agreed

March 8, 2013 @ 2:40 PM

Dave Williams

@Phil, why are you judging his sobriety on a photo? He could have been tired as he does work long days. I highly doubt that at a public function, he or anyone else would have the time to get to the point of a drunken stupor.
I would be interested to see other photos of him at this event as there likely plenty of them. I will bet that he looks quite normal in most.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:45 PM

Dave Williams

By Christmas time, Target, will be just another option. But the more competition the better.

March 8, 2013 @ 2:50 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Dave - I'm checking out on this debate. He is clearly intoxicated, if you aren't even willing to concede that then there is no further point debating.

I'm more than willing to admit that this woman may have made the entire thing up to take another shot at Ford, but the fact that the man drinks too much shouldn't be a topic of debate here.

And yes, competition in our retailers is almost always a good thing.

I acknowledge up front that I do not know anything nor have any facts about actual social problems that a Casino can bring to an area. On first glance of the MGM presentation this week, the idea of re-developing the CNE/Ontario Place grounds looks interesting. Seems like a wasted use of land currently.

March 8, 2013 @ 3:13 PM

Gotta say this lock out has really ruined NHL hockey for me. I feel nothing when I see the NHL on tv.

I would love to see a casino is Toronto.

I've got to say, the lockout may have had the opposite effect on me. I think it whet my appetite for NHL hockey.

I've been loving Leafs hockey this season. Unless I'm playing volleyball or booked elsewhere, games are appointment viewing for me and the whole family has been enjoying it.

I respect your reaction, though.

March 8, 2013 @ 3:41 PM

I really like the MGM proposal for Toronto. It would be amazing.

March 8, 2013 @ 3:42 PM

@miss. Phil
Yeh you can back out of the debate, but don't tell me that you can tell from a picture if someone iis drunk.
That is ridiculous.
Have you never seen someone blink or close their eyes when the flash goes off, I have and yes I suppose they look drunk but actually quite sober. Stop judging on speculation.

I'd have to say the lockout has had zero effect on me. I can take it or leave it now, just as I could before.

We need spring on the Prairies. I'm pretty thick-skinned to the snow and blow, but we haven't had a real break since early November. I'm able to get out and about, but I've definitely got that claustrophobic feeling these days.

I've managed one bbq this winter. Last winter I did several per month, every month!

I love fish, but my wife won't let me cook it in the house, as she hates the smell...

March 8, 2013 @ 4:44 PM

@Phil although I was not alive during his heyday, Dean Martin was famous for being drunk on TV and in film. People honestly thought the man was a happy drunk due to this. The man never touched alcohol in his life, so to say you can judge a persons sobriety based on one photo is either an amazing talent that you have, or you have your blinders on and cannot see past your dislike for the man. These type of stories fuel your kind. You stated earlier that you will wait for the facts before you pass judgement, but you clearly judged on hearsay alone.
I also saw MGM's plans. I am not a gambler, but private investment in this land will revive the area, even if it is a casino.

March 8, 2013 @ 5:36 PM

(sigh) You have an unfortunate habit of making these biased statements against Ford, and then claim you aren't "militantly opposed to Ford". Face it Phil, you ARE militantly opposed to Ford. You use things like the DUI charge from before he was even a city councillor as ammunition, as if it's evidence that he's a danger to Toronto citizens. You repeat unsubstantiated items and present them as fact (Ford giving someone the finger). And now you you state with absolute conviction that Ford is drunk in this photo. As others have said, you CAN'T make that call from a picture. Secondly, if he was drunk, wouldn't it only help Thompson's story if she said, "He smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words!" instead of going out of her way to say the exact opposite?
You may have fooled yourself into pretending you aren't biased, but you're not fooling anyone else.

Was at the casino in Windsor earlier this week, gotta say that the slots do nothing for me. Boring, and lots of people (mostly older) sitting at machines and pressing buttons.

Having said that, it was pretty exciting when my co-worker won $560 on a $20 bet.

Who else is going to the TFC game tomorrow? Hoping to see a good game, and wouldn't it be great if the Reds win??

You guys are wrong. My trainer happens to be a very good friend, but he is married so he is not my significant other, okay. Well, my Habs won last night. That's great. They came from behind to win 4 to 3. The Leafs lost. too bad the Leafs lost in a shootout so they get a point. My Coyotes won as well. That's wonderful. My Suns also won last night. Maybe my trainer's team will get to the Brier next year. If not, then I hope some other team from Ontario makes it. I'm sick and tired of Howard. Sure, he's good and all that, but d=why does he have to win all the time. I want new faces, someone who hasn't been there before.

My Habs did it again last night won 5 to 2. PK Subban got three assists. Well, so Howard didn't make it to the final. That's good. Good to get rid of them for once. Jacobs won the Brier. That's a change. Maybe my trainer's team will be there next year.
