Dean Blundell Contemplates Quitting 102.1

twitterDean Blundell's been tweeting today that he's thinking about packing it in soon. In fact, those are his exact words.

dbs0

In that tweet, he says "Thinking of packing it in soon". When someone replied with a "say it ain't so", he replied with a clarifying "I think its so sir".

dbs1

What has Dean Blundell tweeting about quitting the Dean Blundell Show on 102.1 The Edge? "Gotta grow dude. Noone knows how much time we have and its silly to not use it properly."

dbs2

If Blundell does in fact step down from his morning show duties at the Edge, I hope he does something similar to what he used to do with Eye Weekly. His columns are no longer online, but if you click over to that entry I wrote, you'll see I copied and pasted a couple of the better ones in the comments.

But the question remains: much a-tweet about nothing or is the DBS winding down?

Howard Stern has been "thinking of quitting" his radio show since 1985.

There were rumours about a year ago that The Fan was pursuing him. I think they've filled up all their spots now though.

@madhatressTO on Twitter wonders if this isn't related to Dean Blundell's reaction to Wade Belak's death...

May make sense...you know about the DBS curse?

Please tell me about the DBS curse...

Well, maybe he sees the writing on the wall. When your morning show is consistently a share point lower than the station average, it won't be long before the station finds a better option.
Plus, Stern is constantly playing the "I'm leaving" game, and it wouldn't be the first time Blundell's borrowed from Stern.

Relax.. it's ratings.. anything for attention in a competitive radio world.

Dean's dad is a lifelong radio exec with CHUM. How else do you think his son was doing mornings in Windsor in his early 20s?

If he's looking to enter a new field, before turning 40 would probably be a good time, but his 14 year old listeners can't relate.

The sooner the better.

I haven't listened since they turfed Jason.

1 year and counting.

And the DBS curse is just stupid. They pick and choose people who appear on the show and bad things happen to them.

They forget to mention the hundreds of people that have been on that nothing happens to. It's a radio show, it's bound to happen. The same could be said for any show that interviews people.

He could "use it properly" more effectively by elevating the content of the show to appeal to someone over the age of 21.

Shapiro must be s&*(*ing himself. That guy is nothing without Dean and would have no carreer at all

Hey Larry!

You mention the DBS is consistently a share point below the station average. Can you share the relevant PPM data to back that up?

It is pretty easy to lob a generalized statement like that, but I am pretty sure that the morning show does not underperform as you suggest...But maybe you can prove me wrong.

The curse is that many people who have been on the show have been cursed.

Most of the Battle of the Blades people who went on were voted off the week after being on DBS. Bob Probert died that summer.

Wade Belak was a good friend of the guys. He was traded and has since passed(RIP).

Lots of TML players have been traded after being on the show.

Todd went to the raptor practice last year when they were doing well. They then lost like 10 games in a row.

Weezer played at the Jingle Bell Rock(for DBS) - they got in a bus crash the next day. Rivers broke a bunch of ribs.

Its probably all crap but its interesting that all these guys have gone down after being on the show.

The events are weird - probably just coincidence but still...weird

Everybody should quit every Corus job there is. And then burn that fucking cancer down.
Music will be a lot better off with out all these uninformed RHCP etc. fans wandering around.
Get them back into Two and a Half Men where they belong.

September 12, 2011 @ 1:56 PM

Quinny.

This is Blundle seeking attention using Belak's death.

He's a third-rate Howard Stern imitator. Stern's wack-pack were always dropping dead or getting otherwise f'd-up

I hate it when these so called edgey guys get soft and weepy.

Such a fake!

Well, I don't listen to that show and don't really want to. I don't listen to the Edge. Well, it may or may not be true. Maybe he's just saying he's going to quit, but will hang around. You never know.

WHO cares. I thought NOBODY listened to 102.1 anymore.
Radio toady is brutal with every station. AM & FM radio is a dying breed. Nobody to survive in next 2-3 years.
Humble & Fred on your new experience - Good Luck as you will both need it.

Oh this is just mid-life crisis speculation. Every late 30s / early 40s man goes through it especially when combined with a job they have held for 8-15 years, have kids that are growing up and don't need direct supervision anymore and looking across the dinner table at a spouse who you don't even know anymore (or care to in more cases).
You can either buy a F150 Harley Davidson edition, buy a motorcycle (if you wife lets you), have an affair with a younger woman with daddy issues, increase your drinking to the point where you have a problem, make a pass at one of your kid's friend's MILF at an out-of-town hockey game or ... quit your job.
Wait until he sees his divorce lawyer's bill, and he'll reconsider.

@Gump
Now we know why your postings are so bitter and negative.
Not everybody lives in misery buddy.

@Larry B.
That sir, is a hasty generalization based on fallacious induction. I am neither bitter nor negative (in general), I just know from my circle of acquaintences that this is a common situation.
I am however, quite negative against conservatives and narrow mindedness.
Apropos of nothing, did you know that 100,000+ Iraqis have died since 9/11? Not much mention of that during the maudlin reflections of the past decade.

Dean Blundell is recently separated from his wife. Remember he spoke about his "roommate" all the time on air? Then all of a sudden he never said a word about her?

I was at the Captian Morgan's Crusade and he confessed that he and his wife have split. Also, he continues to mention that he is staying at Todd's place. He is not living in Markham right now.

This is all added into the Belak within a week of him saying this statement.

Consider and comment.

Dean: please, please leave. You suck, you always have. Only thing that made your show decent was Jason Barr. Now that he is gone, you are useless and irrelevant.

102.1

@Quinny

you insensitive prick. Belak was a hero to all hockey fans in toronto, and a close friend of Blundell. How would you feel if one if your best friends die. A death can change anyones perspective on life. clearly he seems to be level headed now. but to go through a divorce and have one of your best friends die at around the same time. lets see how you would handle that before you start making criticisms that he is using a death to boost his ratings

Divorce

Everyone's coming here to learn about Dean Blundell's divorce.

Does anyone know any details about Dean Blundell's divorce? If you do, tell us here!

January 17, 2012 @ 10:00 AM

TO dude

Dean may or may not be heading towards a divorce. Rumour is he and his wife are visiting her family back in the island of Malta this summer. The thing that bugs me about Dean is how he continues to meddle in muncipal politics. He is a glorifed shock jock and he doesn't even live in this city. Yet he brings in Miller when he was a mayor and kept on telling him "Keep up the good work" yet he never had to put up with the garbage strike and other BS Miller left us. Now he has a hard on against Ford. Enough!!! Stick to Markham's politics and leave TO alone Dean!

Can't wait for Dean to quit. Boring dialogue, same thing each day. You want growth Dean then grow a brain. Maybe his Dad can get him another job where we don't have to listen to his unintelegent responses - Stern "wanabe". Here is a thought - play more music.
