The weather is warming up, making Torontonians eager to say goodbye to the winter blues and get out and explore. However, after several years of the pandemic and various lockdowns, many people are tired of the same old scenery and want a breath of fresh air.

If you’ve trodden the same Toronto streets and neighbourhoods repeatedly, consider taking a day trip to Ajax. You might think of it as just a small suburb east of Toronto, but this town packs a punch bigger than its size.

There are many ways to spend a day, or even a weekend, in Ajax. Here are just a few ways to see more of an area few Torontonians take the opportunity to visit.

Check Out the Neighbourhoods

A fantastic way to get to know any town or city is to wander aimlessly around its neighbourhoods. It allows you to truly get a feel for a place. Ajax offers charming neighbourhoods, historic landmarks, and unique architecture, all wrapped up in a charming small town on Lake Ontario. If you want to extend your stay, you can always contact a real estate agent in Ajax.

Walk Along the Waterfront

Sure, Toronto has plenty of kilometres of the Waterfront Trail of its own for people to meander along. That trail extends east to Brockville, and the Ajax part of it offers some truly spectacular views. There are seven kilometres of pristine shoreline. It also travels through some great parks, including Rotary Park, Lion’s Point, Veteran’s Point Garden, Paradise Park and Carruthers Marsh. Head to Lion’s Point for some truly breathtaking vistas.

Enjoy Some Arts and Culture

You won’t get too far in Ajax without coming across a spot showcasing local art – from murals to sculptures. The town hall and Village Community Centre are just some locations, in addition to several parks, buildings and trails scattered through the town.

Another option is to take in some entertainment at the St. Francis Centre for Community Arts & Culture. The centre offers concerts, shows and plays year-round, offering something for everyone, including plenty of family programming.

Try Your Luck

If you’re looking for more excitement, you can take your turn at the Ajax Casino. One of the most popular attractions in the town, Ajax Casino has 900 slot machines, electronic blackjack, baccarat, and roulette.

You can also take in a race at the Ajax Downs. It’s been showing live Quarter Horse Racing since 1969 and is still going strong to this day.

Go Green

To say that Ajax has plenty of green spaces is a bit of an understatement. With more than 74 kilometres of trails and 600 hectares of parkland, Ajax is the perfect place to go for a hike or bike ride. Take in the grasslands, forests and trails of the Greenwood Conservation Area. Meander along the paths or enjoy the best fishing in all of Durham Region in Duffins Creek.

Despite being a small town, Ajax has plenty of things to do and see. You might have to plan several trips to take in all this place has to offer.
