Well well well !

Found it right away!

One week since my oldest daughter moved away for University and she's only called twice wanting to come home! Thankfully she's beginning to settle in and is enjoying her classes (and appreciating all the stuff we did for her that she now has to do for herself)

My oldest is in grade 11 and I'm curious where he'll end up going for post-secondary. I went to U of T because I couldn't afford to leave my mom's place. So many possibilities!

September 7, 2018 @ 8:04 AM

I left the decision completely up to my daughter and gave her no influence in any way. Having said that, A part of me wishes she choose U of T over Ottawa for a few reasons..

The drive sucks

The Hockey team sucks

The cost of residence sucks!

September 7, 2018 @ 8:09 AM

I couldn't find it right away. That's why I'm not first. I opened and closed my browser so many times. I finally found it. How about those Indians. That's great. Shane Beber is awesome. He pitched a gem except he had a hiccup, but my Indians could bounce back because they're great. Franky Lindor homered twice and Jason Kipnis homered. My Jose hasn't homered in a while. Come on Jose. You're due. My Diamondbacks lost though. That's no good. Another Brad Boxberger blown save. Ready for some football. My Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals will all win on Sunday. That will be great.

No excuses Cheryl.... It's the first thing that pops up on the page :)

I'm silently rooting for my son to take culinary arts or fashion or something at Humber College's south campus so he's only a short walk away from my home.

We're finally starting to get some ccooler weather and I'm enjoying it. Its nice to be able to open the windows and get some fresh air in the house. Also I can give my a/c a break.

September 7, 2018 @ 8:48 AM

Mike, careful what you wish for... That last week leading up to our daughter leaving was SO stressful for all the ladies in our house....We were counting the days until she left! It was miserable lol

The Indians picking Toronto to begin their official phaseout of the "Chief Wahoo" logo is fitting.

It's almost like they are sending a message to anyone who lives in the general area and is insistent on making a Chief Wahoo cake.

twins from bolton

7 years ago both my kids left - 1 to Univ. Ottawa & other to Laurier. Both left the same weekend, 1 day in Ottawa & next day in Kitchener. Wife went to Ottawa while I stayed home & got other ready for the next day move. Tears galore that weekend.
Son in Ottawa who I thought would be very homesick acclimatized immediately & other who was more independent - texts & call galore the 1st week. It was a challenging year with visits to them & costs, don't ask. Thankfully had RESPs for both of them since they were very young.

A lifestyle change for everyone & survived. It made them both stronger & both graduated Cum Laude in the respective areas of study.

Good to you & your family.

September 7, 2018 @ 2:03 PM

Thanks for taking the time to write that @twins from bolton and congrats on your kid's success!

Both my girls and my wife were beyond emotional... I think they were upset I didn't show a sad emotion... I was/am so happy, proud and excited for her next chapter in life I just couldn't cry.

Thankfully a week into her leaving she's acclimated very well, is making her meals, doing her laundry and using transit to explore the city. She'll be just fine :) My 16 year old and her mother, we'll see!

September 7, 2018 @ 3:57 PM

So here's the thing: Last night I was invited by a dude I know to attend Indie88's 5th birthday party
at the Danforth Music Hall with Metric in the headlining position. While I was able to make it out
to the venue despite the numerous TTC headaches (thanks to friggin' TIFF and track replacement
near my 'hood), I never actually made it into the gig. Although I made sure to leave my satchel/security blanket back at ye olde homestead, I foolishly packed a dollar store knock-off
chocolate bar and a couple of name brand pepperoni sticks for the long trek. I did not eat them
en route as I stopped for pizza to kill time, but the security goon who took his sweet time patting me
down felt them in my jacket. Despite a solemn promise not to eat them in the venue, the goon would
not abide. And so rather than give him the satisfaction of snarfing the contraband down/ or surrendering my treats, I bolted (re:wobbled!) away. I guess the folks smokin' doobs in the open and the a-holescalpers hawking single seats for $150/per were nowhere near as offensive!! So in other words, my evening did not end in a triumphant BD73 version of Foreginer's "Juke Box Hero!" In other words. screw you Lou Gramm!!

September 7, 2018 @ 4:20 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

So you chose a chocolate bar and a couple of pepperoni sticks over Metric?

September 7, 2018 @ 4:39 PM

Couldn't give them the satisfaction of giving in!! Plus, a couple of years ago my one-legged
frenemy got us booted out of a screening of the last Star Trek movie, and although I could
have stayed, I left with him out of solidarity. Needless to say, he probably did the wise thing
and went in with our so-called ticket benefactor, all the while acting like he didn't know me!!
The ironic thing is I know that his knapsack was loaded to the hilt with snacks in a secret
compartment, but he didn't get caught. Truthfully, my social anxiety was also on high and
so my response had as much to do with that. I checked out the setlist online this morning
and since I'm more familiar with their first couple of albums, so I might have been better seeing
them perform back then.

September 7, 2018 @ 4:44 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

But you had already made it to the Danforth Music Hall!

September 7, 2018 @ 4:54 PM

I was told to show up at 8, but the first band went on at 7:30 and as I said above, the social
anxiety was on high (everything to do with me, but I felt out of place. Common occurrence,
sadly). As well, Metric wasn't due onstage until 9:30 and my nerves were already completely
on fire. Flight gave in to fight and/or quick guzzling of tasty contraband!!

September 7, 2018 @ 4:57 PM

I get it... I'm just busting your chops.

September 7, 2018 @ 5:14 PM

Well, then make mine VEAL, please!! But let's keep that strictly between us, or I'll lose
my credibility in Vegandale, I mean, Parkdale, okay?!?

September 7, 2018 @ 5:17 PM

In the summer, don't you find that chocolate bars start melting the instant you get them outside of an air conditioned store or mall? That ruins it for me -- I can't stand that, though admittedly it's probably good that it keeps me from eating too many of them.

I also had a strange experience getting through security into an event in the last few days, at Budweiser Stage. Instead of the usual "wanding", we were told simply "empty your pockets completely" by the security person. With her plastic-gloved hand, she inexplicably pulled the fast food paper napkin out of my hand and put it in the garbage. Uh -- I guess that's somehow considered to be a dangerous item now?

September 7, 2018 @ 6:27 PM

I always keep my chocolate bars in the fridge before I know I'm going to be outside for awhile. Also,
it's funny you should mention the Budweiser Stage, as I was going to write that the last time
I was there to see Hall and Oates in 2016, the security was pretty lax once you showed them
you didn't have any bottles/cans on your person. Looking forward to The Taste of the Kingsway
tomorrow and Sunday as there is no need to worry about being hassled about candy, chips,
pepperoni sticks and pop!! The free part doesn't hurt, either, although I'm still upset that I missed
out on the Journey and Rush tributes there two years ago,

September 7, 2018 @ 6:47 PM

I take it that the show you might have been referring to in your last comment was Ozzy?

September 7, 2018 @ 6:49 PM

Yes, good guess.

September 7, 2018 @ 7:14 PM

I don't know why sometimes I have trouble finding the Open Mikes. Anyway, I finally found it. I use Internet Explorer. That's the only browser that works for me. Boy I am fricken mad. My Indians lost last night. That's no good at all. They blew it. Adam Simber lost the game. That's no good at all. My Orioles also lost but my Diamondbacks won. Yes, there will be a Chief Wahoo cake at my party. The baker is baking it special. It will be so good. Yes, my Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals will all win tomorrow.

September 8, 2018 @ 7:22 AM

Public service announcement: Last night Paul McCartney performed a full concert live from
NYC's Grand Central Station live on Youtube. Sure, his voice is kinda shaky in places, but he's
promoting his latest album called "Egypt Station." I've only been able to find that show cut
up into individual songs, but I'm sure you more enlightened techno-boffins out there will
be able to find the complete show, if you do so desire!!

!!!! BAD PUN ALERT !!!!

Hey Mike I saw on your Twitter feed that you are now "New Toronto Mike"
So if I were to move into the next community over and start a competing deep dive podcast, could it be said that I'm trying to "Mimico" you?

September 8, 2018 @ 11:25 AM

TM has explained the Toronto/New Toronto/Etobicoke/Mimico delineation probably a dozens times on the podcast but it remains a deep mystery to this 905er.

September 8, 2018 @ 11:46 AM

@Jody Thornton

@Rob J

In south Etobicoke, which is to say, west of the Humber River but east of Mississauga, there are three different communities along the lake. Going from the Humber River to Mississauga they are Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch.

If you're riding the Waterfront Trail, you know you've left Mimico for New Toronto when you reach the numbered streets. Mimico has no numbered streets. So when you reach First Street, you're in New Toronto. The actual boundary is Dwight Ave which is that street to the east of the McDonald's on Lake Shore.

Long Branch starts at 23rd Street (I believe - I need to confirm via Google!) and you're in Mississauga when you pass Etobicoke Creek. That runs through Marie Curtis Park if you're still on the Waterfront Trail.

To make things a little complicated, Mimico is a pan handle, so it's not only east of New Toronto, it's also north of New Toronto. New Toronto is a lot smaller than Mimico and Long Branch. It's also home to TMDS.

any of them!!

@Mike (Re: Tweeted photo of Mike Stafford on Reach for the Top)
Great photo!! He looks like he could have easily fit in perfectly with the cast of
"That '70s Show" or (perish the thought!) the Bay City Rollers back in the day, minus any involvement
in their numerous sex/pedo scandals!

September 8, 2018 @ 1:32 PM

Have not seen 'Aunt Harriet ' behind home plate in quite a while at Blow Jay games..
Guess the kids/grandkids want the money fast...duffin the tix for cash..
Probably telling the clueless boob she is still going to games ..then takin her to Wards Island or the Eaton Center...she has no clue...
The kidz are smater than I thought..$$$$

September 8, 2018 @ 4:41 PM

Boy, that was close, but my beloved Indians won. That's great. Homers by Roberto Perez and Michael Brantley. Wonderful. Adam Plutko was shaky, but we won and that's great. I'm concerned about my Jose though. He hasn't hit a homer in quite some time and he's not hitting very well, so I hope he's okay. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost though again.

September 9, 2018 @ 7:48 AM

I've been reading about the idea to relook at the plans for Ontario Place. We were there for an afternoon this summer while waiting to get into a concert at Budweiser Stage and aside from the bike trail next to the new park area, the place was deserted. It's virtually impossible to get to via public transit and the parking is horrible, so I'm hopeful something positive will come eventually to the area.

Knowing the Ford family's affinity for Chicago and in the past mentioned building a Ferris Wheel on the site, I'll bet that if Mr. Ford has his way, Ontario Place will end up looking something like a cross between Navy Pier and the Museum Campus in the Windy City-which wouldn't be a bad thing.

On the other hand, it could end up just being a big casino with a shopping mall and a bunch of condos, but we'll see. LOL

September 9, 2018 @ 9:00 AM

My Indians lost. That's no good at all. They lost to a bunch of no name players who played like superstars. It was an awful game yesterday. Come on Jose. I need you to start hitting again. Why is he in a fricken slump? Anyway, my Orioles and Diamondbacks also lost. My Ravens won though really big. That was great. My Browns only tied. Next time they will win. My Cardinals lost. Well, no more Max Pacioretty. He went to the fricken Golden Knights. He's not with my Habs anymore. My Habs will be in the finals with my Coyotes though. Carey Price is going to be healthy again. The price is right.

September 10, 2018 @ 7:06 AM

James Edgar

Good morning happy Fri er Monday.

As usual i have nothing of substance to contribute other than to Congrats to beatts on the start of the university adventure for your daughter!

My daughter started grade 9 last week ,so far so good except for the review of last year pop quiz in Geography which she failed badly causing her to freak out and think she is suddenly stupid after the summer break. Probably a good thing she's a little scared and already working harder .

The cool weather is a really good break , The AC at my new place broke last week and can't be fixed easily (other than a complete replacement which there is no budget for at the moment) so it was brutal sleeping for a bit. being able to open windows and breath is fantastic. Actually a bit of a break for riding my bike too . At 30C a full face motorcycle helmet can get somewhat warm.

I see in the news this morning that a judge has sided with Toronto and halted the cuts to city council . That should make for fire works at Queens park today.

September 10, 2018 @ 9:05 AM

- The Cleveland Browns did tie, meaning they've already had a better season than last year's 0-16, while the Buffalo Bills yesterday looked like they could be a threat to lose every game.
- Is it really all that difficult to walk for 10 minutes from the Exhibition TTC stops and GO station to the Budweiser Stage? Other than the trail/park thing that opened last year, the provincial government said several years ago that Ontario Place would be redeveloped and include "a live music venue and a waterfront canal district with stores and restaurants", but not condos. And the City of Toronto was firmly against the casino operators who seemed to be the only ones publicly pushing their plans for redevelopment.

September 10, 2018 @ 9:52 AM

You missed out on another chance to use your Smart Serve certification at the Taste of the
Kingsway festival this weekend!! GLB had a couple of booths set up and were doing a very
brisk business, especially with Saturday's nicer weather. Saw great tributes to Elton John (Rohn!!),
ABBA and Queen, and the Brian May clone from Simply Queen was one hell of a revelation. And best of all, no security pat downs (or potential forced chocolate bar confiscations!!). Not that lonely for
a little bit o' human touch, YET!!!

September 10, 2018 @ 9:56 AM

Luigi - I don't want Ford's input on it, his obsession with Toronto when there are so many major cities in the province is obviously a control play. BUT the parking is atrocious down there, the best I can do is to park in Liberty Village and take the 15 min walk in, which is usually ok because it's warm - but it's odd to have a concert venue with 0 parking.

September 10, 2018 @ 11:29 AM

Elton John started his retirement tour the other night and what do you know? I was wrong in my
previous comment: He did 24 songs, including my absolute all-time EJ fave "Someone Saved
My Life Tonight." You should be in for a terrific show, despite all my previous snarking about his
vocal issues. Hope someone films that particular track if he does it again in the Six!!!

September 10, 2018 @ 12:51 PM

Rob Ford - 3K's & you're out & only been premier of Ont. for 3-4 months.
1. Changing sex ed curriculum back to late 1990's model. Life has change Doug since then & gotta keep up with the times.
2. Buck A Beer - only a very few independent breweries have acknowledged this & those that have only 1 sells beer at LCBO. Other breweries have actually slightly increased their $ in the last few days.
3, Judge over rules your bill to change from 47 to 25 constituents in Toronto 1 1/2 months B4 the election.
DOFO=TRUMP IMO. My way or the highway.

Just caught your tweet reposting your opinion about the four greatest (musical, or overall?)
poets of our time: Jus' wonderin', but how come no Sammy Hagar, Sir Mix-a-Lot, W. Axl
Rose or Willie D. or Scarface (Geto Boys, for the uninitiated!)? They must all be on your back-up
list, no?!?

How many places on this planet can you get 40 degrees and single digits in less than a week?

Bipolar GTA weather is tough to handle.

September 10, 2018 @ 6:35 PM

Tomorrow is 17th ann. of 9/11 a day I will never forget as 1 of my co-workers was donating a kidney that day to his brother & another worker in early labor. Everybodies thoughts were with Brian & Helen at that time. THEN word spread that a plane hit 1st Trade Tower, probably an accident. 2nd plane hit short time later & then everyone when to boardroom to watch on TV. Totally shocking & President said if you want to go home to be with loved ones, do so especially those with young kids in school. I left at 3PM as most left in shock. Wife wasn't working at the time & kids came home at lunch time & said we can stay home if a parent or guardian is with us.

A day for infamy & lest we never forget.

September 10, 2018 @ 8:16 PM

My Indians blew it. That's no good. They blew it and it's awful. Why did they have to blow it. Well, Josh Donaldson is back. I mean they get him and he is on the fricken DL. He's going to be at third with my Jose at second base. I mean why do this. Donaldson isn't going to help much. My Diamondbacks lost as well and lost big. That sucks. Yes, it's 911. I remember 911. I was still working and going out to work. Nobody at work told me what was going on and I didn't find out until I got home. That's because the people I worked with hated me. They were bitches and they talked about me behind my back out loud as well. It was really awful. Well, I don't work anymore. Sure, there's less money, but I don't miss all the other things about working.

September 11, 2018 @ 7:11 AM

An American company, Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, will next year take over as operator of Casino Niagara, Fallsview and the new 5000-seat theatre. Apparently one thing they are known for is obnoxious advertising, so we'll probably hear and see even more Fallsview ads.
And on the subject of obnoxious and possibly casinos, it will be interesting to find out what DoFo's intentions are for Ontario Place. I don't gamble so it wouldn't bother me one way or the other, but it could be another way for him to petulantly get his revenge on them "downtown elites".
Could the amphitheatre be enclosed to become a year-round venue?

@ Andrew: Collingwood Dave's answer is exactly why we need better sex ed. The ignorance in that last statement is astounding.

bsmntdwllr73 - 24 songs!!!!!!!!!! Hope my day at the office after is a light one, I am so excited.

Ben Vidal - Ontario betrayed us. I was so disappointed in the province as a whole after the election, but honestly I know that people are selfish and ignorant and just do not care. Hope we make it out ok, I don't even want kids til the next government (does not matter since I am single haha)

Yes jj ontario gave up on this last election. Ford got his majority with less than 40% of the vote, but such is how the cookie crumbles in a democracy. Too many ill feelings towards to Wynne and the feeling that people need a change. Ford keeps going down this path he'll be a 4 year premier and no more.

Long time lurker, first post. Like to share a very cool happening at the Stereophonics concert a the Danforth Music Hall last night. Johnny Fay of The Hip joined the band on drums as they played Blow at High Dough and Locked in The Trunk as a tribute to Gord and their own drummer Stuart who also sadly passed. Kelly Jones also sang a beautiful rendition of Fiddler's Green during the encore.

Is everyone ready for TMLX2 tomorrow night? The weather looks like it's going to be great!

September 11, 2018 @ 4:56 PM

Ben V - 4 years is soooo long. Wynne was bad, but really people are silly to think he was the better choice.

I can't deal !!!!!!

September 11, 2018 @ 9:28 PM

Well, my Indians won. There were homers by Yan Gomes and Edwin Encarnacion. My Jose hasn't hit one since August 17. I need my Jose to start hitting again. Josh Donaldson played, but he didn't do much. I don't think he's that good. He's passed his prime. My Diamondbacks finally won as well. My Orioles lost though. You're right. Doug Ford is not very good. I voted Liberal. Fricken NDP won in my riding. Doug Ford is just like his brother. Get him out of here. As for kids, I don't have any and I won't. I don't want kids.

Nice to have TMI back after its summer retirement (pre-mature sidelining?!?). Great choice
of musical bumper for a variety of reasons. Fave part: Your Naughty By Nature OPP pun (Other People's Podcasts: CLASSIC!!).

September 12, 2018 @ 10:04 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - so it was news news today in the TMI?
I had better listen.

September 12, 2018 @ 1:48 PM

Actually, it has been re-purposed as a way to give thoughtful, measured updates on the progress
of TMDS! A great listen, and I'm sure that you'll love the song he picked as that edition's
bumper music. Although if memory serves, it fades out before my fave part of that track occurs,
To say any more would probably give it away too easily!!

September 12, 2018 @ 1:52 PM

My Indians lost. My Jose did hit a home run though. It's about time, but that's the only run they got. This pitcher Blake Snell comes out of nowhere and pitches like a superstar. Who is he anyway? I mean why is he so good. Well, Josh Donaldson got one at bat in the end, but he didn't do much. He's overrated. He's not very good. Well, my Indians need to win tomorrow. When will they fricken clinch? My Orioles and Diamondbacks also lost. My Ravens play tonight. They're going to win. Of course they will win. My Browns and Cardinals will win on Sunday.

September 13, 2018 @ 6:32 AM

Not competent enough to understand how to post links, but the new edition of Now Magazine
has an interview with Molly Johnson, conducted by a woman( if that matters), and in it, while not
as "electric" as she was during her TM appearance, plenty of arrogance and attitude in full
effect mode. Innocent, ASD Spectrum-addled question: Don't you have to be a little more than
neighbourhood famous before you start pulling that kind of star-tripping shit?!?

September 13, 2018 @ 10:29 AM

Anxiously awaiting the upcoming KOTJ episode (just tweeted about by Mike) with retrontario
counting down his Top 10 Canuck TV theme songs. Jus sayin', will be severely gutted if Magic Shadows
