WTF is Doug Ford doing?

This is all about reducing Toronto's power. It's time for the Province of Toronto!

Happy Friday!

I'll write more about this on the weekend, but here's video from last week's Toronto Mike'd Listener Experience.

July 27, 2018 @ 7:47 AM

I'm not first. I didn't make it to first. Oh well. My Diamondbacks were winning. They blew it. Fricken Brad Boxberger blew the save again. He's blown a few. I'm mad. My Orioles also lost. My Indians didn't play last night. They'll win tonight. Indians and Diamondbacks to the World Series so I'll have a party.

July 27, 2018 @ 7:49 AM

What is DoFo doing?

I won’t argue the merits of reducing council. Perhaps it may be a good idea. I’m not 100% sure. However, doing this the day the nominations close and weeks before an election? It’s beyond irresponsible and proves Doug isn’t looking out for the province. This is a municipal issue that doesn’t concern the province at large.
For a guy who claims to be all about the little guy and listening to the people he’s certainly not listening to anyone right now.
I thought he would be a bad Premier but a month into his term and he’s just being a dick.

Rush Mike

I am on a roll...posting 2 weeks in a row...In Cleveland to collect my family from the In-Laws but will be hitting the Craft Brewery Tour tonight. Looking forward to discovering some more local beers and will probably visit the "Other" Great Lakes Brewery here in Cleveland.
Indians are away this weekend so no visit to Progressive Field.

July 27, 2018 @ 9:03 AM

@Mike, nice video. I noticed a guy with a video camera walking around but thought it was footage for GLB..

July 27, 2018 @ 9:20 AM

I hope all the misguided "FOLKS!!" who fell for Doug Ford's beyond idiotic and b.s. 'caring for the
little guy' spiel are feeling oh-so-smug and self-satisfied at this moment!! Wonder what kind of
stuff must be going through John Tory's head, when he remembers his own failed attempt
to become the Premier of Ontario. Perhaps this is all just petty sour grapes on Dougie's part,
'cause he's still bitter about losing out on being mayor back in 2014?!? You'd think that his
current position would have put such ill-feelings to rest. Gotta jet, as I've gotta go and start
picking out a key spot for my future cardboard condo. Excelsior? Probably not (for me!)

July 27, 2018 @ 9:26 AM

In other more important news, I cannot believe the way most film critics are getting all orgasmic
over the sixth(!!) installment of Tom Cruise's insipid Mission Impossible series. The only Mission
Impossible I can think of when it comes to that dude is his ability to 'satisfy' a woman or keep
a relationship going long-term (like I should even have the Cajones to type that!!). After all, this
is the same fella who twenty years ago needed an on-set tutorial in how to believably/cinematically
make love to his then-wife, Nicole Kidman, during the production of "Eyes Wide Shut!!!" Sure, he'd
probably kick (or potentially lick, no aspersions there!!)my tuchus just for typing this), but I still can't
believe that he broke up with Mimi Rogers, and that was decades ago!! And if anyone can explain
how these films are any different than most of his other 'straight dramatic' roles, well, I've got a
handy No-Prize available for your endless enjoyment!!

July 27, 2018 @ 9:36 AM

If you're a fan of cringey humour, check out this video interview with Lisa Thompson about the "2014 sex ed curriculum".

July 27, 2018 @ 9:53 AM

My use of the word Cajones above is actually spelled as 'COJONES'. So do kindly forgive my cultural
and linguistic ignorance; but to date my Spanish exposure largely consists of decades-old
Julio Iglesias tracks(!), and that old late night softcore serial called "Latin Lover" (back in the day) on that very helpful TLN channel (#35 on my Rogers cable, when I could afford to have it! sob!!).

I haven't lived in Ontario since 1999 but what happens there can also affect the rest of Canada. In a roundabout way we got our Ford More Years and I just hope we can limit the damage, or at the very least, don't let it go out of province.

Here is the back cover of the 1935 novel "It Can't Happen Here", by Sinclair Lewis.

We have a mini-Trump but DoFo isn't federal. Perhaps this is our near miss warning.

DF sucks, MI6 can be enjoyable with the new crew they have put together over last 2 MI movies with Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Mike is drinking a beer and as his brother I am having a fake intervention. My quota is 2 beers per year so everyone is an alcoholic in my mind. Finally, re-watching The Wire for a 5th time. Each time it is different but it never gets boring. Omar and Bubbles for life!!

That's it, that's all.

July 28, 2018 @ 6:57 AM

Great night for baseball. No, my Indians are not home. They're in Detroit. They won last night. Two homers by Franky Lindor and one by Yonder Alonso. Carlos Carrasco pitched a gem. My Orioles also won for a change. They won't go to the World Series though. My Diamondbacks won as well, so they'll go to the World Series. See, you all should have voted Liberal. Then we wouldn't have Doug Ford. Liberal didn't win in my riding though, NDP did unfortunately. Then there is going to be this referendum. I'm not voting in that. Why have a stupid referendum anyway? Who knows.

July 28, 2018 @ 7:47 AM

What a joke Domino's Pizza is. On July 25 they were celebrating their 35th anniversary by offering med cheese/pepperoni pizza for only $3.50. It was supposed to be all day but franchises shut it down quickly. No matter the temptation, no Domino's for me.

Fake News Domino's!!!!

July 28, 2018 @ 11:55 AM

Ford is aligning municipal bounties with provincial/federal in hopes of maximizing conservative-leaning councillors & causing chaos. When the politically "right" councillors can't, or won't work with the mayor to get things done, Ford'll legislate that the Mayor of Toronto is now officially another responsibility of the Premier, effectively giving control of the city to himself.

Or something.

Tom Cruise has been great since he basically became the American Jackie Chan. Now, he's trying to kill himself on set doing the craziest stunts imaginable and we're all better off for it because his last few movies have been incredibly entertaining.

The last 2 MI movies have been great, same with Edge of Tomorrow. Plus, there's the Top Gun sequel coming next year.

Oh how I do hate Toronto traffic, let me count the ways!
Tonight ( Saturday) my daughter has a function at Queen street west and Niagara, and since she has to bring food, etc. Asks me to drive her in. get into the city in about 40 minutes, which I thought wasn' t too bad, so head back down Strachan to Lakeshore( by the CNE Prince' s gates) totally forgetting the TFC game I saw in progress earlier was letting out.
Lakeshore west jammed, and to really mess things up, the Toronto Police in their infinite wisdom, have closed the Jameson ramp to access the Gardiner. What a cluster you know what. Very little traffic on the Gardiner, it was just flying.
But even worse, Lakeshore lights at Parkside and whatever the next street west is, are out of sync and only about 10 cars a light were getting through. Took over an hour plus From west end of CNE to get to Parkside.
2.5 hours round trip, bull sugar!

July 28, 2018 @ 10:57 PM

My Indians lost. That's no good at all. They only got one run. They better win today. My Orioles and Diamondbacks won though. Well, Doug Ford is stupid. I didn't like his brother either. Too bad the Liberals didn't win. I wish George Smitherman was still running. He would really make a good Premier. I'm not voting in that referendum garbage. He'll just do what he wants anyway like that vote years ago if we wanted a megacity or not. People voted no, but it went on anyway, so I am not going to waste my time to find a driver to take me to some poll to vote in a stupid referendum. I won't do it.

July 29, 2018 @ 8:01 AM

Not a fan of the Mission Impossible movies. Here is a fun fact - Tom Cruise is now five years older than Wilford Brimley was when he filmed Cocoon. Might be time for Tom to pass the torch.

July 29, 2018 @ 9:48 PM

Vladamir Guerrero inducted to BBHOF today as Cal. Angel & played 4 years there yet played over 10 years as Mtl Expo as his decision to be classed as an Angel. Disheartening & disappointed.

Hopefully his son follows his fathers game as a player but not as a person.

July 29, 2018 @ 10:52 PM

Baseball was great yesterday. My Indians won big. Corey Kluber pitched a gem. Edwin Encarnacion hit a home run. Yonder Alonso hit a home run. My Orioles also won. They're getting hot a little too late though. My Diamondbacks won. World Series here we come. Awesome party. I think there should be a cake with a Chief Wahoo logo on it. That would be so awesome. Special order cake and we'll have Bob Seger and John Mellencamp playing. Remember first Saturday after the World Series. Yes, George Smitherman would make a good Premier. Doug Ford is no good. Referendum is a bunch of crap.

July 30, 2018 @ 7:07 AM

I felt slightly less strange in the world an hour ago heading southbound on the Woodbine bus
towards the Beaches library branch. There was an older Asian dude sporting a t-shirt with
the Led Zep II album artwork and proudly toting a Walkman of some indeterminable make
(from afar). When he pulled out a cassette copy of The Stones "Hot Rocks" collection, I was
equally impressed. Prove positive, once again, that there is still an extreme minority of us
gleefully/anachronistically attached both to the old ways and our our old tech. Rock on!!

Mike Wilner seriously claiming that the Jays were going to shop Roberto Osuna this year even if he didn't have the assault charge.

We have such embarrassing local sports coverage in this city, only thing that makes me ashamed to be from here and live here.

I like Mike, but that's a strange hill to die on.

Osuna is being shopped for one reason and one reason only....

July 30, 2018 @ 5:14 PM

Hamburger Hill, now that was a worthwhile hill to die on! Great '80s film, btw!!

July 30, 2018 @ 5:17 PM

I do have a question: Is Mike Willner still claiming "it's early' or has he changed his tune this year?

July 30, 2018 @ 5:23 PM

Me and my Sweetie ate lunch at the A &W near the memorial for the Danforth victims earlier
this afternoon. We saw the PM's motorcade drive by and later on the two of us made a brief
visit to the site. Have to admit that I was more than a little bit uncomfortable with the many
people who were taking selfies as it did not seem appropriate at all. There was also a troubled
soul across the street expressing his right to free speech whilst holding a speech containing a
real 'mature' pun on Trudeau's name. That's the problem with F.S., you often have to take the
bad with the good. Totally not the time or place for this gent to air whatever his grievance might
have been.

A while ago I predicted Tavares to sign in Toronto & a short time later I wrote Osuna, Josh D & Tulo will never play for the jays again. 1 down & 2 to go.

Osuna traded, Josh D & Tulo are like Joffrey Lupul with the Leafs.

The Target managers from Cleveland Shitakins have carved up the Blue Jays from a exciting competitive team to a team with no future.
To all you experts whom say they have player x,y & z playing in double A get back to me when player x,y & z have proven they can hit Major League pitching regularly and field at the same level. That will be years away, If It EVER happens.
I feel real sorry for August/September ticket holders !!!!

July 30, 2018 @ 9:33 PM

My Indians lost last night. That's no good at all. My Jose got two homers though which is great and Yan Gomes got one. Sucks that they lost. My Diamondbacks also lost. My Orioles didn't play. Yes, there will be a party the first Saturday after the World Series. I'm going to invite my favourite baseball players, Franky Lindor, my Jose. My Jose is Jose Ramirez just to make it clear because there are a lot of baseball players named Jose. Corey Kluber will be at my party as well. There will be a special cake with Chief Wahoo on it. Navy blue and red icing. Of course there will be sushi at the party as well as Edge with Protein cereal. It will be a blast.

July 31, 2018 @ 7:13 AM

And kindly don't forget Solsbury (Steak!!) Hill, either!!!
FYI: There was a great hamburger chain called Blueberry Hill
in the late '80s/early '90s. Much tastier than Lick's(less gamey) and
terrific fries to boot. Too many sushi and taco joints these days if
you ask me!! (And no, the proceeding comment wasn't brought to
you by the office of Donald Trump or any of his notorious breed

July 31, 2018 @ 9:31 AM

"D" is for Delusional, jus' sayin'!! (Little known Spirit of the West b-side!!).
The Doobie Bros. "What A Fool Believes" also comes to mind!!!

July 31, 2018 @ 9:34 AM

I prefer to be running up that hill.

July 31, 2018 @ 9:44 AM

Nice one!! Was going to post that myself but unilaterally decided that the hill mentioned in that
particular song might be more metaphorical than literal. Could be wrong, definitely
wouldn't be the first time (this morning!).

July 31, 2018 @ 9:47 AM

Uh-oh -- have some municipal boundaries been rearranged to make you MississaugaMike?

July 31, 2018 @ 9:54 AM

Don't worry, I'm sure that they will actually get around to playing a free (to the public,
that is!) event in the actual Mississauga before too long!! Do they actually have any fans
left who would still be willing to pay to see them at this point?!? You know what they
say about getting the milk for free!! Their baby didn't run away, but their fans sure probably
did (from the proverbial ticket booth!!!).

July 31, 2018 @ 9:58 AM

That party actually does sound like a blast. Never been to a party where cereal was served!

July 31, 2018 @ 11:26 AM

I'm happy an alleged woman beater is no longer playing for the Blue Jays but on the other hand I'm disappointed an alleged woman beater is still playing for any professional sports team. I don't like that he was traded to a team that's likely headed to the post-season. The Astros are playing in Toronto in September, it'll be interested to see if Osuna plays and what type of reception he gets.

July 31, 2018 @ 12:03 PM

Urooj Islam

I will not attend this party if you're going to have a cake with the racially insensitive Chief Wahoo logo on it.

A $h!t show at Queens Park today as PC's accusing an NDP member of mocking a PC member.
The House Speaker didn't hear the comment & all others didn't either except DoFo & his PC disciples.

We seriously need rain...forest fires are out of control. As of yesterday Alban was under evacuation orders and that's only about 45 minutes away from Sudbury. That's kinda scary actually. I just hope we don't become the next Fort Mack.

@Jason from Sudbury
My wife was born in Sudbury (Lively) & her Mom & 2 sisters still live there. Today wife receives mssg. that both sisters are on standby for possible evacuation. Her Mom lives in Espanola which isn't affected yet.
Good luck Jason & hopefully it pours rain for many days.

July 31, 2018 @ 3:54 PM

With August only hours away, I looked at the CNE website. Strangely buying one of those plastic tickets (at a Loblaws, Wrecks-All, etc.) for $15 (price already includes tax) is cheaper than paying online where a $1.99 fee is added.
I still don't know what day I want to go, as I haven't decided which tribute or washed up remnant of a classic rock act to see at the Bandshell or Midway stage.

July 31, 2018 @ 5:19 PM

Glad to admit that I still get to save at least 50% off over-priced CNE entry due to my most-
cherished ODSP non-living status!! Was only aware of the former free gimp admission policy
for a handful of years, so it would have been nice to be able to take advantage of it for another
decade or two!! Definitely going to try to check out D. DeYoung, the hotter of the two sisters
from Heart (Nancy W.) and Kansas. The rest of that particular line-up doesn't really inspire me
to check my crappy couch for hidden coinage!!

July 31, 2018 @ 5:46 PM

^ Also, on opening day only, it's $10 at gate.

July 31, 2018 @ 6:09 PM

Every year that opening day half-price 'bargain' goes up, but it is the day of the true Mr. Roboto's
show!! Not sure if that Monday to Thursday after five PM cheaper deal will also still be offered.

July 31, 2018 @ 6:13 PM

$9 CNE Entry is indeed offered Monday to Thursday ('cept on labour Day) after 5 PM. Some of
the better music gigs happen on the weekend, natch!!

July 31, 2018 @ 6:16 PM

I'm almost tempted to go see the Rush tribute act, but then the thought occurs to me -- is it possible for any other human to sound like Geddy Lee did in the band's heyday? It would have to be someone just singing blandly in their own voice, or maybe worse, trying to contort it in an inevitably unsuccessful impersonation attempt.

July 31, 2018 @ 7:46 PM

My Indians won last night. That's great. They're so awesome. Trevor Bauer pitched a gem. Well, they'll win again today. My Diamondbacks also won. That's wonderful. I told you it's Indians and Diamondbacks to the World Series. Yes, there will be a Chief Wahoo cake. I'll get it special ordered. Navy blue and red icing. Yes, there will be Edge with Protein cereal, and yes, there will be lots of sushi. First Saturday after the World Series. No smoking is allowed though. Hopefully nobody has that filthy habit. My Orioles lost again last night though. Well, they win a few games, but lost again. Well, as I said, it will be Indians and Diamondbacks.

August 1, 2018 @ 7:24 AM

Didn't even notice the listing for the Rush tribute act "Crush" on the Midway stage of the
CNE. Only saw Rush once on the "Vapor Trails" tour in '02, so it would be nice to perhaps see
a group that would appear to pay greater tribute to the earlier/more rockin' Hairy Kimono period!!!

August 1, 2018 @ 9:29 AM

So I'm a few weeks into my latest radio experiment of solely listening to one radio station: Boom 97.3.
And while it is nice to hear a broader selection of oldies music and DJs who actually seem to be happy
to have gainful and local employment, I must admit that 'their' formula is already starting to grind on me. For a station that claims to play the best of the '70s/'80s/and '90s, they sure do play a lot of music from the '60s and the early aughts!! Anyhoo, this morning I heard Bryan Adams's "Summer of '69" for the umpteenth time over the past several days, and it got me to thinking: When did that track seemingly become the most-played off the "Reckless" album? Sure, it's currently the summer season, but how often do you hear "Heaven" on the radio anymore? Bryan was only nine years old that particular summer and his co-writer Jim Vallance was 17, so the events described within were
presumably based more on the latter's teenage exploits. Pretty sure that Mr. Adams was enjoying his last few years of acne-free skin at this point: CLEARASIL!! Moreover, I like to imagine a more
lecherous world in which that song was written by the noted American Poet Laureate of Smut: Steven
Tyler, the man who gave the world that tender Ukelele ballad!) "Lord of the Thighs." Just gives
me chills thinking about the missed prurient cross-promotional opportunities.

So pumped about the Paulie Morriss episode. I'm sure he's got plenty of good stories. I was a big fan of HTZ's for the longest time but then corporate took it over and fucked it up

I do have a bunch of questions, if you don't get to all of these I understand.
What is his favorit interview that he's done over the years?
Out of all the bands/artists he's met over the years, who was the coolest or most interesting?
Out of all the different owners the station has had over the years, who was the best to work for?
I'm sure you're going to ask about Iron Mike obviously. I fucking miss that guy. No matter how much of a shitty day I was having he would always make me laugh. That guy had a talent. I do have to ask though. Has the station ever gotten in trouble for some of the shit he's done on air? What's his favorit Iron Mike prank?

Whatever happened to Dianne Daniels? Also, is the Gasman still around? I miss Music Notes and Beyond 11 which was a metal show on Sunday nights.
Does he think a hardrock/metal station would do well in Toronto?

Ok...I'm done now!

Legendary and prototypical Yacht Rock combo Toto started the latest leg of their 40th anniversary
tour the other night and as musical payback to Weezer for covering a couple of their classic songs
from '82's "Toto IV" album, they gave it their all and tried to cover "Hash Pipe" by Rivers and co,
Sadly, that particular track doesn't really warrant Toto's brand of pomposity!! Epic fail, especially
that middle synth solo!!

August 1, 2018 @ 4:40 PM

I thought the synth solo raised it over the insipid no-solo original :P

My Indians won again. That's great. Great pitching by Carlos Carrasco. My Orioles also won. My Diamondbacks did not play. My trainer is having surgery today. I hope it's going to go okay. It's private parts. He's not going to be knocked out. They won't give him an anesthetic except maybe a freezing. I hope he'll be okay. I'm worried though. Well, hope he'll be all better for my World Series party. Anyway, it will be so great to have my party. Indians and Diamondbacks. Chief Wahoo cake. It will be special ordered.
