Why was Humble Howard such a dick to you yesterday? It was awkward AF.

Don't take that shit from him.

@Sam in Pickering

It's difficult to describe, actually... it was just strange and awkward.

Toronto Mike was co-hosting Humble and Fred's show with Humble and something was pissing Humble off from the getgo. HH took a bunch of cheap shots at Mike like he was jealous or something. And then Mike shared why he doesn't love poo stories on the show and HH went off on him.

In this same episode, HH shits on Martin Streek, Roger Ashby, Steve Anthony and others and tries to make a hilarious joke out of Erin Davis's daughter's death.

Mike tweeted a link. Listen for yourself and tell me I'm wrong.

Here's the episode of Humble and Fred I co-hosted this morning. I'm on for the first hour before cycling to freedom. https://t.co/76ncaw9Grx

In 3 weeks I'm heading to a lovely resort nestled somewhere between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, and it seems my chances of slithering off this mortal coil during that time have increased exponentially this week.

If it isn't the Cartels jacking you at roadblocks, hepatitis from the ice cubes, malaria from the mosquitoes or low level thugs masquerading as cops, Mexico's newest and most notorious cold-blooded killer, is the dreaded hot tub.

In the immortal words of The Northern Pikes, she ain't pretty she just looks that way.

Two Canadian tourists in Mexico seemed to have been electrocuted in one this past week, so I'll steer quite clear of the jacuzzi as I saunter by holding my obnoxious 39 ounce bubba keg filled to the god damn brim with all-inclusive top-shelf scotch. Worse is that there tends to be a number of these lucrative looking tubs inconspicuously dotted around the resort grounds, so when I'm greasily shifting around in an attempt to work off the nineteen plates of barbecue ribs, eleven butter drenched lobster tails and four bowls of whip-cream topped chocolate ice cream, I'll need to be on high alert at all times...the second I get cut eye from just one, ahma gonna go all Dolph Lundgren up in that.

Indeed, It's the most pleasant things in life that seem to creep up and kill ya...

I listened to that H+F link and it's not quite as bad as Stan says but it was pretty awkward and Humble was a bit of a dick.

I tend to think of hot tubs as a human bouillabaisse a la the old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Having a soak in a private tub is one thing, but the allure of partaking in a public hot tub is beyond my comprehension.

November 13, 2015 @ 10:13 AM

Ryan G / hobogauntlet.blogspot.ca

@Nigel - I agree with you, so what I'm going to do ahead of departure is hire a professional make up person to affix a giant fake festering pus'y-looking welt on the side of my neck, and display it proudly when I jump in the jacuzzi.

That should magically convert it from public to private.

I absolutely agree with Stan and the points he makes.

I hate the poo talk in general, it's one reason I do not refer the show to others. I do not want to be associated with such low rent comedy premises. I'm not squeamish, it's just not intelligent.

HH's take on Erin Davis' daughter's memorial service is the perfect distillation of his ego problem. Very cringe worthy.

@ryan G
That Cdn couple who died in Mexico were not electrocuted in the hot tub. They were making sweet seniors love and he died of a heart attack which drowned her. Wonder if Blundell mocked the tragedy on the FAN this morning?

November 13, 2015 @ 10:31 AM

Re: poo talk ...

I don't even know where I come down on this. I used to listen to H&F regularly, but it was too many hours to keep up on, and I just didn't relate to their demographic much.

But them, and I swear every other fucking podcast I listen to, start talking about shit while I'm in the midst of an IBS episode and desperately seeking a bathroom. Doesn't matter if it's video games, sexual health, music, general story-telling or local news. They all talk about shit at times. It almost seems to be a human condition.

Hell "shit stories" have been a thing/meme on online forums I've followed too, to where others pick up and just assume everyone else (on that forum) shits their pants on the regular.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a thing that's fascinated and made people laugh for millennia. It's not my cup of tea ... but it seems rather normal.

Protip: Don't ever talk to nurses.

Here's a tip: if someone's young daughter dies suddenly only 6 month ago, don't try and make a funny bit about it. I just hope Erin Davis never hears it.

November 13, 2015 @ 10:46 AM

Ryan G / hobogauntlet.blogspot.ca

@Rob J - I wasn't aware that's what really happened - thanks for clarifying. I was in a similar situation years ago when an ex girlfriend of mine and I decided to get amourous in our room one morning. She kept getting distracted though with all the noise but I shushed her in an attempt to keep the lovin' going. Despite my best efforts we had to shut 'er down though. Indeed, that's the very last time I'll let maintenance guys in that early to do noisy repairs.

I don’t think Humble was being a real jerk on the podcast. He was sensitive when faced with criticism but otherwise wasn’t that bad. People are defensive and Mike offered his opinion and Humble didn’t care for it.

I didn’t think it was that bad. I happen to agree with Mike about the pooh jokes but that’s just personal preference.

It really is a thankless spot. Anyone listening has already decided they enjoy the dynamic of Humble and Fred. Changing that dynamic instantly alters the formula listeners crave. There really is no Humble and Fred without the both of them.

But when Humble called me and asked me to "guest Fred", I was happy to do it. I made alternative arrangements for getting my youngest to daycare, set my alarm and biked over at about 6:30am.

Humble thought it would be a good idea if I sent over 5 snippets of my podcast so we could talk about that. Again, I was game. It's his show.

In the room, it was actually far more awkward. I was only on for an hour because there were about six or seven other guys (and a gal) in the room ready to go on, so I was home well before the MP3 was available. I contemplated not listening, because it felt so awkward and strange in the room, but at about 10am I gave it spin.

It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. A lot of it was actually pretty funny, but yes, Humble seemed to turn on me when I suggested the show was better than the canned Huffington Post bit about shit-flavoured Asian food. As a guest, I never would have piped up, but as co-host I felt somehow empowered to be honest. As I said, I'm not anti-poo humour, I just think the poo should be relate-able, like a personal story from one of the guys or Phil or Amanda or whomever.

By the way, Howard and I have talked twice since this recording. He called me yesterday afternoon and again this morning. We're fine, and I'm sorry for shitting on the shit-bit, no pun intended.

I don't think I'll guest-Fred again. The Humble and Fred show needs both Humble and Fred. I'll stick to my day job.

November 13, 2015 @ 11:16 AM

Jillian

I agree with above about HH being rude to you yesterday, Mike. He has a huge ego and seems to be threatened by Mike. Good for you for standing up to him. Did you hear him say to Darren Frost earlier this week "whose name is on the t-shirt"?
I'm ok with poo talk- but no more tinder date stories. It's so pathetic and sad.

November 13, 2015 @ 11:24 AM

McNulty

I don't know Humble. So I cannot speak for him, however, offering suggestions while on the air is insulting as well. Saying, "I just want to make your show better" may be a little over the line...while on the air. Of the air it is perfectly valid.

Even though I agree with Mike and I don't enjoy that kind of humour.

November 13, 2015 @ 11:32 AM

Cool Nights

My hot take:

Humble needs to be the alpha dog. Fred happily works well with that. The other guest Freds were also happy to kiss alpha dog's ass.

But Mike stood up for himself, was respectful but clearly not afraid of the alpha dog. That's when HH's insecurity came out. It was really clear when he put down Roger Ashby and Steve Anthony, but later in the show he literally commanded the rest to tell him what a great job he did this week. It might be the most cringe-worthy thing I've ever heard.

At some point Mike said he wanted an hour to psycho analyze HH. That's a show I'd listen to. That man is so insecure and full of himself I'm surprised his head still fits through the studio door.

Used to listen quite regularly to Humble and Fred as well as Dean Blundell. The only real discernible difference was their ages. Instead of talking about masturbation like Dean did, H+F were referencing the difficulty getting it up and the things that go along with being +50.

In fact I would say that H+F focus more on poo jokes as a part of their bit than Dean ever did. If it wasn't for Dean's wha happened call in bit it would have been talked about even less.

I won't shit on H+F, because I don't find their pod cast entertaining any more. I just don't see massive difference between them and the old Dean Blundell show, having been fans of both.

Cherry should be asked his views on radiation in the ocean. I can imagine his idiotic raving.

Dr Helen Caldicott
In time the truth always leaks out, like the radiation. From the article: "The reading of 9.4 sieverts (Sv) per hour was taken during the September 4-25 checks. According to the operator, the highest levels of contamination were measured on the floor. TEPCO did not offer any further details. The company will start the decontamination process that it hopes to complete by December.

Immediate radiation exposure around the Fukushima nuclear power following the deadly incident reached 400 millisieverts (mSv) per hour in places. One millisievert is a thousandth of a sievert, therefore the new 9.4 Sv reading is 23.5 times higher than the radiation level recorded in March, 2011.

Just to compare, the typical average dose for a person is about 0.0036 Sv. per year. Combined career exposure limits for NASA's male astronauts by the time they are 55 years old is 4.00 Sv.

Earlier this week, a government commissioned study, said that nearly 40 percent of those involved in the emergency assistance operation at the Fukushima plant in March 2011 suffered radiation exposure exceeding the yearly public norm."

Just listened to the H&F episode everyone's talking about here.

The entire dynamic in this particular podcast is a bit off - no Freddie P., no Eileen. Amanda steers things into different areas, naturally. One thing is for sure - Fred would have tempered those awkward bits. The conversation got a little dark. And decidedly odd.

I read the comments above before listening to the podcast - so I expected it to be far more awkward. HH has a big personality. Being right in front of him as the convo starts to skid off the road? That would have been super uncomfortable.

Those Tinder stories are sad - and depressing. Is that online world really that fucked up?

I am so not a fan of Emily's. Or the fawning of Emily. Or that little girl voice she puts on. I get she's a sponsor though and is afforded the attention she receives.

I haven't listened to any of the other 'guest Fred' shows from this week - but I had to check this one out - for obvious reasons.

I couldn't resist. I listened to the first hour of the Humble and Fred show. Now I'm pissed.

Howard fucked you, man. He shit all over you and it was clearly petty jealously. Just listening upset me. Who the fuck is he to have an ego that big.

And while he's at it, why not go at Martin Streek and Roger Ashby and hey, Erin Davis's daughter died. That's gotta be worth a laugh or two.

But they're in the game. Shitting on you on his podcast was a dick move. For what it's worth, you handled it well. I'd have slugged him and walked out.

November 13, 2015 @ 3:08 PM

Greg

The guy opens by shitting on your brother and wife's entire family. He seems strangely proud that he pissed off half the room at your wedding with an unscheduled speech.

And after he shits on your brother and wife's family, he then shits on your podcast. It's like he invited you on to take you out at the knees. I don't even think it's because of what you said about the 5-year old poo-poo humour (which I agree with you 100%) but I'll bet it was always in the plans. I've listened twice now and I'm sure of it.

S.A.L.

I just listened to the H&F podcast in question & I thought it was going to be far more awkward & disrespectful based on what I had read here prior to listening. (It's all perception I guess)

Around the 1:54 ish mark Humble acknowledges that it was a awkward moment with Mike & he was pissed off for some reason… so it appears it was something that was not planned & just went off the rails a bit in the heat of the moment.

Shit happens (pun intended) & its unfortunate it happened with Mike's segment as he is such a loyal supporter & friend of both Humble & the show.

I also agree with Mike on the poo humour pondering… I like them (H&F) both for their stories as the main draw as well… but the poo must work for most of their demo I imagine.

I would think by resorting to poo less.. it would open them up to a broader audience & a wider array of potential sponsors while the core fan base wouldn't really miss it. (IMO)

Mike did well in that situation.. someone else might have gotten their nose out of joint but he acted like a pro. I think he would know if Howard was really being a dic or just needling him for the "bit" sake of the show... as friends can do. From a outsiders perception it can look quite different than the actual intent.

Stay strong Mike!

Unbelievable what transpired in Paris Friday night. Absolutely senseless.

Mike I think knows Howard well enough that Humbles filters for offending are set high, in that what he thinks is a killing bit in his mind is not playing out as such with the audience and can be offensive.

The Poo Poo has a place , but not during an interview such as Peter Cetera, etc. and you hear the temptation from Humble to play a my c**k, (I censored this not Mike) or song at any other part of the show would be appropriate. HH can conduct a really thoughtful and indepth interview that outside broadcasters would kill to have for material, just without the poopoo and my c**k spot inserted in. Should be interesting next week when FreddieP is back and the analysis begins. I am an unabashed 100% by the way, so yes have drank the H&F Kool Aid I guess.

@Rob I'm pissed enough that i would if they would take me. Sadly I'm too old and Diabetic so i'm Out. But you bring up an excellent point. Most people calling for direct action like attacking ISIL are probably not likely recruits for the Army nor are they very rational at the moment . The decision to get into anything like combat operations requires dispassionate debate without the emotion associated with atrocity's like last night. whether we could have a debate like that is very questionable in my mind.

My wife has family in France and in fact her nephew's wife was out to dinner with a friend last night not far from where everything was going down. What a game. My Ravens lost. Well, I hread that they lost. The NFL screwed up again. The listen link is nowhere to be found. This free stuff sucks. They got rid of audio league pass and now you have to go to the teams web sites to get the games, but now it doesn't work. Well, my Cardinals did win last night so that was great. Well, my Nets and Suns both lost. That's no good. Anyway, big game tonight. Coyotes at Habs which will be a preview of the finals. I hope it's close and goes to overtime. Anyway, I don't think there is any curling this weekend. My trainer curls next week. I don't know when Kean curls again.

Toronto Mike,

The only reason I even know that H&F still have a show anywhere is you. I listened to this show and you carry that show on your back like a knapsack. Your podcasts are entertaining, and personable. I do agree with you, that the first 30 minutes has always the best stuff with H&F, however the shows quality in content has deteriorated over the years. You have been more then generous in promoting H&F over the years, and I'm sure it has been reciprocal for the both of you in some way. There are some newer shows where the hosts have raised their game that you should check out, and maybe shine a light on....entertaining, personable, and engaging radio from people such as yourself that care about content and depth.

I have absolutely nothing to do with the content of Humble and Fred's show. In fact, I'm belittled by them for sharing my opinions on that subject.

I wish them well, but it's not my show. My show is very different, as you know.

I actually heard something on Humble and Fred Monday morning that offended me so much I unsubscribed from the podcast.

Toronto Mike,

I know you have very little to do with that show. What I was getting at, was on that specific show, you were the only person worth listening to, meaning you classed up the joint.

Sorry for misunderstanding... I guess that topic has me a little touchy this week.

And thanks!

So Toronto Mike,

Sorry to see what appears to be a rapid deterioration in your relationship with H&F. You've gone form a fried of the show to someone who is no longer listening. Curious to hear what offended you that caused you to unsubscribe?

I don't want to get overly dramatic and call it a rapid deterioration. I'm just taking a little break.

good for you Mike (re: taking a break).
I just extended my Sirius XM free trial and have seriously tried to listen to those guys for the past 4 months. I just can't anymore.
Like many others have said in the past, there is A LOT more out there and ALL of it is better than those two and their idea of whats funny.
Enjoy your time away, you won't regret it.
