Blue Jays Sign J.A. Happ (Can We Stop Talking About Price Now?)

The Blue Jays have signed free-agent starter J.A. Happ to a three-year, $36 million contract. As smarter people than I will tell you, that ends the dream we'd re-sign David Price.

Did you really think Price was coming back. I sure didn't.

Price embodied the frenetic — and successful — approach of former Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos during the 2015 season. Price was acquired in July to help bring postseason baseball to Toronto for the first time in 22 years. And he did.

But now Anthopoulos is gone, his trade deadline all-nighters replaced by Mark Shapiro’s methodical business plan. That strategy does not include signing Price for $200 million.

With Happ returning to the Jays as our #4 or #5 starter, that gives us an opening day rotation of Stroman, Dickey, Estrada, Happ and Chavez. Meh.

Unfortunately yes & now we can stop takin about the Jays winning anything next year… third in the East has a nice ring to it does it not?… maybe take a run at the wild card race?

"Dōmo arigatō Mr Sha-Pie-ro"... but I'll be busy doing something else this summer.. anything other than watching a team that could have been a contender yet was satisfied to be a pretender.

Would have made little sense to blow $35 million one one guy when there are multiple needs in the rotation, plus no help at Buffalo. You need at least 7 potential starters going into spring training. The trade didn't payoff, now move on.

Folks have to remember it's only November 28th and there's plenty of time to improve the pitching staff. I sincerely hope Rogers ownership sees fit to spend the money required to to do. Signing JA Happ is fine, but not if he's the you're big get to improve the pitching staff.

So far, the Jays have replaced Buerhle and Price with...Chavez and Happ. And have a gaping hole in the bullpen resulting from the departures of Hendricks, Hawkins, and Lowe. I'm willing to give ShapEYEro a chance but if we see a return to Rogers' spendthrift days and a shift to the Cleveland philosophy of treading water and hoping young players pan out...then watch out.

Memo to Roger$: Chasing AA out of town, dramatically increasing ticket prices, and failing to spend $ to improve the pitching staff is NOT the way to win over fans. Don' t destroy the goodwill you've built up. There's still several months to spring training...

@Rob J.............did you take your medication today?

"The trade didn't payoff, now move on."

Are you nuts? without David Price the Jays do not make the playoffs in 2015
They do not get 7 home games
The owner of the team does not get revenue from 7 home games, concessions, merchandise sales and TV advertising...50 MILLION ++

I would like to have something "not payoff" and score 50 Million +
Where does the line form?

6 home games (not 7) and 1 playoff round win after giving up every single prospect and then some. Pretty sure the Hail Mary trades were made to at least get to the WS, plus they were the faves to win the whole thing. As for the revenue raised, that will go to the shareholders, not the budget.

David Price just signed with Boston.

The Jays never made him an offer.

That doesn't surprise me in the least.

Never made an offer? That's surprising. I'm not surprised he didn't sign with the Jays but would have thought there would at least be an offer.

@Alvin

When talking to the agent, you know what kind of term and money is required to land David Price. The Jays didn't bother making an offer because the offer they'd have made wouldn't be competitive.

It's like bidding on a million dollar home with a lowball offer of 500k.

So much for Price saying last week money is NOT what I'm looking for, it's a team where I can contend & win. Other top teams in MLB gave up early, STL Cardinals & Chicago Cubs.

Personally I lost a lot of respect for "the Price is right - Wrong now" saying what he said. If you look at his previous comments, becoming a Cdn. citizen, love this team & wanna stay here.

You're full of BS David - money talks as you were already set for life. Have a happy time with you & your girlfriend in Boston after they slammed you're GF on twitter 2 years ago & you responded with negative comments about Boston & yet you sign there. Boston is still worst team in East Division with you & who else is there. Only a few good players.

Money talks & too bad Edwin (Chicken Wing) is 3rd for award for DH in American League, another FARCE. Morales wins with MUCH less offense & Ortiz is 2nd. WTF.

Good Luck &
