Adam vs. Alexisonfire: Social Payola at Edge 102?

radioOn Saturday morning, I was listening to Edge 102 in the car. Despite what you may think having read the odd rant about 102.1 in this space, it's still my favourite music station. There's really no alternative in the GTA for a guy who wants to hear the latest Foo Fighters single alongside a Hey Rosetta! track or an Arcade Fire song.

So I'm listening, and Adam is about to play a double shot, two songs in a row from the same artist... and Alexisonfire's "Boiled Frogs" begins to play. Edge 102 plays the crap out of Alexisonfire, and with their recent announcement that they're breaking up after ten years, hearing "Boiled Frogs" was completely unexceptional. What caught my attention was what happened next.

Adam ordered the song stopped. They cut the tune after only a few seconds and Adam said something like this... this is a paraphrase from memory, but I believe I'm nailing the sentiment.

Let's not play that. We're not playing Alexisonfire anymore. Apparently, some of the guys had some things to say about us despite the fact we've been big supporters of theirs over the years. Let's play something by a band that actually likes us. This is Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, friends of the station.

I've searched Google and Twitter trying to find a quote from an Alexisonfire band member that would have prompted this act by Adam, but I've come up empty. I did find this Tweet from Adam, however, in which he proclaims "Done with Alexisonfire... #pricks".

This got me thinking... if a station refuses to play a band that says negative things about the station, and instead plays a band that says nice things about the station, isn't that a form of social Payola? Instead of taking money to play an artist's songs, Edge 102 is taking endorsements and positive social currency.

The whole practice smells... What do you guys think about a station refusing to play a band's music because of something a band member said about the station?

i like the balls on Adam for doing this.

not literally of course, mainly because i've never seen Adam's balls.

it reminds me of something a jock would do on air years ago. but, i find it hard to believe a single announcer has the power to pull a band from the rotation. of course, it could be a new station policy and they instructed Adam to pull this stunt on air to look edgy and controversial on their part.

I haven't listen to CFNY since last August and this is another reason why.

Don't play a band that doesn't like you? That's how they'll decide their playlist? Classy.

It's like Dean's fued with Toykyo Police Club. They slighted him and now he hates least he did a year ago.

Mike, give the station up. You can find other things to listen to in the car. I have and I commute.

Sunday morning is the radio boonies. I'm not sure if it counts for anything to people in power. A move like that would usually get an on-air person (especially a weekend one) a major chew-out, though, unless it was a setup.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:37 AM

If he did this on his own then I respect the individuality on a certain level. Takes a lot of guts for somebody in radio to do anything remotely against the system, especially nowadays when everything is more cookie cutter than I can ever remember. Even if what he did was wrong which it almost certainly is, it's kind of cool. But if it's just a station publicity stunt designed to look edgy and cool, then it's unspeakably lame and even more petty than it already is.

What are the odds that Adam either suddenly disappears or gets to take a nice little vacation sometime soon? If he doesn't, then we probably know the answer to who's responsible. And if they do suspend him and then he comes back and talks about it, it's probably fake.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:38 AM

Sorry - it happened Saturday morning. Only slightly less boonie-ish. :-) Point stands.

This was definitely Saturday morning.

I'll bet it was staged... but I'd love to know for sure. Adam, are you out there? We want to hear from you!

August 8, 2011 @ 11:39 AM

For one it isn't the full story so judging any party is not fair.

As for them not playing any band that has said or done anything negative to them I think is justified. Mostly on the edge it is the DJ discretion as to what is not played more than what is played, Dean refuse's to play SUM41, due to legal action they and Avril took against them in the past, I wouldn't play SUM 41 either, however while on vacation the fill in DJ played SUM 41.

So if it is a station ban or just a personality's opinion is still yet to be seen, would you still do business with anyone that slandered your reputation, lively hood and/or character. I wouldn't but still all the facts are not present.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:39 AM

this happened at wakestock. some of the boys from alexisonfire just shot their mouths off.
the station has supported the band 100% and to have the band rip the station apart, that's not a wise thing to do. why burn bridges.

August 8, 2011 @ 2:29 PM

Unrelated.... But I heard AC/DC Who Made Who on the DBS Monday morning. I checked my car tuner 3 times.

August 8, 2011 @ 2:33 PM

Ryan G

@christine - what was said about the station that pissed them off?

August 8, 2011 @ 2:41 PM

A few things...

Firstly, there's this write up about the feud between Alexisonfire and The Dean Blundell show. This is from October 2010.

But how does that come into play on Saturday? Was it because Alexisonfire broke up and Adam felt like revisiting October 2010 or did something else happen?

As for hearing AC~DC, I heard Shook Me All Night Long one morning. Weird.

August 8, 2011 @ 3:14 PM

Ryan G

i hear guns n roses on the edge too. wtf? what's happening to this station?

I have it on good authority that this station we all love to hate is making more money than ever.

Narrower playlists attract more ears, it seems.

Business always gets in the way of good radio.

August 8, 2011 @ 4:03 PM

Hey, I was at Wakestock, the lead singer of the band ripped the Edge and Blundell personally, Adam was on the air live, don't think he heard it. Then Adam got on the stage to intro the band and they were dicks to him. I think he did it on his station ploy. Alexis suck and so do their new bands, one hit wonders, forgotten already....but Adam's getting lots of press, nice move Mike.

August 8, 2011 @ 5:49 PM

Also 102 morning shows ratings have been about a share-point below the station average for the last few months.

August 8, 2011 @ 7:51 PM

Hey Mike, Where were you listening to Adam in the morning? He didn't even go on the air till after lunchtime. What else did you get mixed up about?
Sounds totally ballsy of Adam! Kudos to you Adam if you are reading this.

August 8, 2011 @ 9:04 PM

If you think that's messed, I've heard Pearl Jam on Q107 on multiple occasions.

I don't like AC/DC or GNR on Edge, but I can at least justify their place in the alt rock genre. It's a fairly wide open genre, and those bands played their part in it.

But Classic Rock is fairly clear cut. In a nutshell, it faded during the hair rock, and was completely displaced by grunge-- y'know, the genre that Pearl Jam is one of the founding, poster-boys for?

August 8, 2011 @ 10:08 PM

I haven't listened in two years, but if you think a little AC/DC or GNR is bad... take a trip down memory lane and see what the Thursday 30 was playing in '89 or '90... I can't remember the week it happened but you can hear the exact date that Maclean Hunter bought them out and went 'poppy'....

good times... good times....

August 8, 2011 @ 10:31 PM

This may clear it up a tad... from Todd Shapiro's twitter:

iamToddyTickles Todd Shapiro --
"@jeruff89: @ItsDeanBlundell @iamToddyTickles Whoa. You guys just got cut up bad by Cunter and Black Lungs." Wha' Happppened? Explain!

(note: cunter and black lungs are made up of former alexisonfire members)

this is what that random tweeter (....i know) claims was said at wakestock about dean/todd:

jeruff89 Jer Ruff --
@iamToddyTickles He also said you guys are child pornographers. #retard.

jeruff89 Jer Ruff --
@iamToddyTickles @ItsDeanBlundell The two lead singers got together and bashed you. Called Dean a fake, a coke head and u guys have hep b.

So there was that... Also it's worth pointing out that between the Jason Barr era and the Derek Welsman era Adam was filling in as the third man. He is obviously friends with Dean and Todd and didn't take kindly to them laying into his friends. I would have a hard time playing their music if I was him too. It's personal, sometimes that can interfere with work. That's life.

August 8, 2011 @ 10:47 PM

I've heard more than once the Psychedelic Furs - Don't You Forget About Me on Q107. Both in the morning and afternoon. I've done the double take at the dial when it's happened.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:01 PM

@Lorne: AC DC and GNR have their place in Alt Rock? Huh? Even the most unmusical person knows that AC DC and GNR have nothing to do with Alt Rock.

As for Alexisonfire, who cares? They're a low end screamo band that owes most of their success to Canadian Content regs. Without them & airplay at that Top 40 Alt Rockers like Edge, they'd be relegated to college radio and small bars.

Ya know, I hear a ton of great Canadian bands on CBC, The Peak & Iceberg on Sirius. All of them with more talent & more potential than Alexisonfire.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:10 PM

Don't You Forget About Me was Simple Minds, not the Furs.

August 8, 2011 @ 11:11 PM

With you there Irvine. Canadian Content is the only reason Alexis has had any airplay. Well that and the fact that Josie Dye is married to their record label. Stupid boys, biting the hand that feeds them. Good for Adam taking a stand and cutting them off!

August 9, 2011 @ 9:05 AM

i 100% agree with what adam did. mainly cause alexisonfire(minus steele and old drummer jesse) are assholes.

August 9, 2011 @ 11:40 AM

The only asshole in the band is that dumb fuck Dallas. Go marry your pseudo-celeb tv host that looks like a fucking cat. While you're at it cry over the microphone while playing your guitar.

August 9, 2011 @ 11:57 AM

Sounds like Adam's contract with the edge is almost up..or he thinks he's as cool as his station use to be..wanker

August 9, 2011 @ 12:18 PM

GTA Rob..."Don't You Forget About Me" is by Simple Minds

August 9, 2011 @ 12:43 PM

If you don't suck there cock and stroke there ego. You won't get your music played. I would love to hear the real story and not the story of some fragile ego DJ's that can dish it all day but never take it.

August 9, 2011 @ 1:10 PM

Interview Adam and Interview who ever said that from Stage and lets hear the history and how this played out. Alexisonfire is broken up? They have nothing to lose anymore, I want to hear the real story.

August 9, 2011 @ 1:12 PM

4x4 Time

Speaking of Canadian Talent, I know they are getting a lot of press and play but The Sheepdogs first record is pretty good.

August 9, 2011 @ 3:31 PM

Where is Derringer on Q107?

Was off on vacation for 1 week (last week) & hasn't been on yesterday or today & nothing being said!! UMMMMM

August 9, 2011 @ 6:24 PM

Well, don't know Alexisonfire. Never heard of them before. don't know them or Adam. Guess it's up to Adam what he wants to do. I don't know. Go Habs.

August 9, 2011 @ 7:19 PM

good on the alexis boys and bullshit to all the "bite the hand that feeds them" nonsense. the "edge" is nothing but corporate bullshit anyway and more power to them for not sucking on it's ever loving teat. blundell is nothing but scum and so are all of his fellow frat boys that populate that sorry excuse for a dying medium.

August 9, 2011 @ 7:35 PM

Derringer has a 10 year contract.

He's also on Facebook all the time.

Not much chance he'll be "disappeared" from the airwaves without anyone noticing.

August 10, 2011 @ 12:17 AM

I think it's great, if only because I'll never have to hear that overplayed, lameass band any more.

Now, if only someone could get Linkin Park to piss them off ...

August 10, 2011 @ 2:17 AM

i can't listen to the edge anymore. i just live stream rock 95 from barrie, it's so much better.

August 10, 2011 @ 11:52 AM

Hey matt, say what you want but the Edge was the hand that fed Alexis. Without them playing that shit to a million plus listeners, they would be like a million other bands trying to get air time.
If they are stupid enough to mouth off in front of 10,000 fans at a concert, vs live to air Edge to a million listeners, they should be cut off. Lets see how well Cunter does with no air time.

If I was Blundell, I woulda had my lawyers on this PDQ.

August 10, 2011 @ 1:42 PM

"Narrower playlists attract more ears, it seems."

I don't know how that is possible. In this online age you can discover music going back decades from all over the world. Narrower playlists drive me and several others to their mp3 players. There is so much radio *could* be playing. But they don't.

As for Adam, he and Bookie are the last DJ's on that station I like. While some may not like the morning show, being in the same market/area for ten years in the radio business is...impressive.

August 10, 2011 @ 2:10 PM

bullshit jakki. alexis got where they were by hitting the road constantly in the first two years of their existence and it was the good old edge and other such avenues that had to play catch up. cunter will do just fine because they don't have to pander to the 15 year old girl/date rapist demographic that make up it's listening audience.
if i was blundell i'd jump in front of a subway.

August 10, 2011 @ 2:14 PM

Joe boo

I have always thought AOF would be an amazing band if they canned the Screamer.

August 11, 2011 @ 8:38 AM

@Stephen from Kitchener.

Yes, narrow playlists attract more ears but that's in the realm of commercial FM radio. Just like McDonald's attracts more diners than a higher quality local diner.

This is the golden age of radio. At no time in history has "radio" had more impact in people's lives. The choices are like never before. Of course, when I say "radio" I'm referring to all radio..not just FM radio.

Edge 102 is the lowest common denominator in radio. It's predictable. If Edge 102 was food, it would be Wonder Breadâ„¢. And, in this life, Wonder bread (like 102.1) has it's place.

The issue isn't so much CFNY aka Edge 102. It's those that defend 102.1 like it's some shrine to new innovative music. It's akin to telling Jamie Oliver (he's a chef) that Wendy's new Baconater IS actually really good.

Listening to 102.1 for good music is like going to Burger King for good food. If you're doing that the problem isn't BK or 102.1......

August 11, 2011 @ 2:29 PM

@Irvine I agree with a good portion of what you say but to say this is the "golden age of radio" is crazy talk. Listenership has been in steep decline for years. Also satellite radio is losing money as well. There's this little thing called the internet that changed the landscape. Shoving the same 5 songs down people's throat just doesnt work anymore. Thank god we dont have to listen to that anymore ;)

August 11, 2011 @ 3:43 PM

Local Rock

To bad Edge doesn't play more Local, and small town Rock acts. I listen to the radio to hopefully discover or learn something new?!

*Adrenechrome - Orillia
*Laganza - Huntsville
*Sadie May Crash - Toronto
*Zeus - Toronto
*Yukon Blonde

If that station stopped playing @$@@#%$ Red Hot Chili Peppers, I think half its airtime would be empty. It's almost as bad as the incessant Michael Buble cd's they play in Chapters book stores, ALL THE TIME.
