The NewMusic

The NewMusicThe NewMusic first aired on CityTV back in 1979. As I mentioned yesterday, this show has been cancelled.

The NewMusic was smart. I watched this show weekly as a younger man, as it was the only music show that was both cool and smart. MuchMusic is now for the brain dead and pop addicts, but it wasn't always this way. I remember this CityTV show eventually started airing on Much, back when they actually played videos. Remember that?

I'm very sorry to see a show like The NewMusic can't survive in this day and age. I wonder if we're now dumbing everything down to the point it's a cut from Jackass and a one-liner from Larry the Cable Guy. I'm going to miss knowing The NewMusic is out there, covering popular music in a broad social, political and economic context.

Here are some of the big names who hosted The NewMusic.

  • Jeanne Beker (1979 - 1985)
  • J. D. Roberts (1979 - 1985)
  • Daniel Richler (1985 - 1987)
  • Laurie Brown (1985 - 1990)
  • Denise Donlon (1986 - 1993)
  • Jana Lynne White (1990 - 1996)
  • Avi Lewis (1996 - 1999)
  • Byron Wong (1999 - 2000)
  • George Stroumboulopoulos (2000 - 2004)
  • Hannah Sung (2004 - 2006)
  • Hannah Simone (2006 - 2008)

When I read the news last night I couldn't help but give 'Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag' a spin. RIP The New Music, RIP.

So there's at least 2 alumi that ended up with CBC.. Avi Lewis and the guy who wears black t-shirts a lot. What ended up to all these other people? I'm curious...

And to Ajax Mike... I have that song on playlists and always think of The New Music.

That song was also used for a WWF Saturday Night's Main Event, back when I was really young an still watched that crap.

The most successful is probably good ol' JD Roberts who is a big mucky muck at CNN.

Jeanne Beker, of course, is now Miss Fashion Television. She's still riding the FT gravy train.

Denise Donlon is a super executive, currently executive director of CBC Radio.

Daniel Richler did well for himself at the CBC as well, hosting Big Life.

Laurie Brown is yet another one who ended up at the CBC. I still see her on TV here and there, although no longer on the CBC.

Other than Avi and George, that's all I can do off the top of my head. It's still a pretty impressive legacy for these former NewMusic hosts.
