Elwy Yost at the Movies

moviesToday I thought about someone I hadn't thought of in years. I thought about Elwy Yost.

Elwy Yost hosted Magic Shadows and Saturday Night at the Movies on TVOntario for most of my life. He focused on classic films, and I was too young to appreciate it, but he was a regular face I'd see as I surfed channels. He was always there, hosting these shows from 1974 to 1999, and he always seemed to love what he did.

Wikipedia tells me he's retired and living in West Vancouver, British Columbia. I'll bet he's seated in a comfy chair right now, enjoying a movie.

Ah yes, the one, the only, Mr. Elwy Yost. I absolutely loved this guy, and the sincerity, wisdom (about films) and warmth that he exuded as he sat in his armchair on the TVO set, speaking to us, the audience about the film we were about to watch on either "Magic Shadows" or "Saturday Night At The Movies". As a teen and then younger adult, I really thought Elwy was one cool guy...very warm and paternal, without being patronizing. When I was 17 or so, I looked him up in the Toronto phone book, then proceeded to call him. He answered the phone, and we had a great chat for about 20 minutes! What a great, great guy!

I miss those days, and Elwy was, hands-down, the best interviewer I have ever had the pleasure of watching.
