Nearly one year ago, I reported on this blog that the CFNY documentary was "on hold". Multiple sources in the know told me that the documentary, in its state at that time, wasn't ready for prime time.
As you heard in episode 1021 of Toronto Mike'd, the Spirit of Radio era of CFNY is essentially the time David Marsden spends as program director of the Brampton-based radio station. Marsden arrived in 1977 and left in 1987 and was long gone by the time the station broke Barenaked Ladies, and years later, Billy Talent.
But over the past year, significant changes were made to this documentary, without director Matt Schicter's involvement, and I'm told it now better encapsulates the spirit of CFNY, or The Spirit of Radio, if you will. As a result, we'll finally get to see it on January 6, 2026, when it premieres on TVO.
In the meantime, the in between time, here's the video recording of episode 1021 of Toronto Mike'd, featuring David Marsden, Ivar Hamilton, Liz Janik, Scot Turner, Maie Pauts, Fred Patterson, Leslie Kross, Alan Cross, Captain Phil Evans, Dani Elwell, Humble Howard Glassman, Rob Johnston, Bob Willette and Jay Brody.
Will this CFNY documentary be credited to Alan Smithee? Stay tuned.
