Let's talk about the new Star Trek - Discovery season 2 - or anything else under the sun - except politics! Agree Toronto Mike? (evil grin)

January 17, 2019 @ 8:30 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, so I'm not first. Okay. I just hope there isn't going to be a whole bunch of snow. That wouldn't be good. My Suns are fricken losing. That's no good at all. Anyway, don't let the bulk of the snow come until I'm home tomorrow either late morning or afternoon. I don't care if it snows late tomorrow or Saturday. I just don't want it to fricken snow tomorrow morning. Now my Suns can't seem to win and I need them to.

Wow, I thought China was like a big cuddly smiling Panda, time to join the 5 Eyes and not let Huawei get a piece of our new 5 G network.

Sorry Cheryl, none of us had any idea that Pascal Siakam would this good this season.

January 17, 2019 @ 10:58 PM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

Cheryl, I am a bit confused, as you say you need your Suns to win, and for the life of me, I do not understand why. They currently have a record of 11-35, the 4th worst, with the Cavs last, with the Knicks, Bulls, and Cavs who are one of the other teams you are a fan of, behind them. Would it not serve you best if your Suns and Cavs both finish at the bottom 1-2 so they get the most lottery balls? You have a generational player going #1 in Zion Williamson, and R.J. Barrett, the Canuck, not a bad consolation prize at #2. It was not that long ago when the Raptors were perennially in the lottery that I would root against them to tank to get as many lottery balls as you can. There is no shame in that, you want what is best for the franchise, and playing for the most lottery balls is the prudent thing to do, as long as you do not make it overtly obvious where the Commissioner warns and/or fines you to field competitive rosters. What most teams do is take their time with injured players who can play, like the Knicks are doing with Porzingis, who is about ready to return but the Knicks are delaying it as long as they can without pissing him off too much. Porzingis rightfully wants to show he can play and set up his next contract, so you have those competing factors playing off against each other. GM's always control this stuff. Head coaches still play to win, but the GM can do their part to not give the head coach all the tools to win in the short term.

The above comment is probably too logical and well-thought-out to really resonate with its
intended audience of one. "We" might be dealing with some kind of bizarro Producers' money-losing
scheme in which the intent is to lose as much money as humanly possible in the pursuit of betting
on the worst teams out there. Just a uneducated guess from a bsmntdwllng member of the Peanut
Gallery- Parkdale Eunuch Division.

Last night we went ice skating at the Bentway skating trail at Fork York, and I highly recommend it. Yes, there is logic to the argument that spending an hour underneath the Gardiner is just asking for a piece of concrete to drop on your head. But, the city has done a really great job of turning a formerly nothing piece of land into a really nice destination. The trail is nice, they've got music playing, skate rentals are free on Thursdays, and they had free skate lessons (kids 6pm, adults 7pm). There are fire pits, and they've turned 2 shipping containers into heated viewing stations for non-skaters.

I want to check that out.

I'm a big fan of skating at Sam Smith Park... great trail, music playing, a fire pit, heated indoor facility for changing, and I can walk to it!

January 18, 2019 @ 10:38 AM

Broni

@Mike
And if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure the Bentway has a bike rack right beside the trail, outside its change area/lockers.

Cheryl, who is your Super Bowl pick? Chiefs, Saints, Rams or Patriots?

I am leaning towards the Rams, I think they are the most complete team.

@ dwllr73...shivrer,smile and hang in there........

January 18, 2019 @ 4:21 PM

@Urooj Islam Once you get Cheryl's PIck you can eliminate that team right off the bat. That leaves you 3 to pick from ...much better odds.
I was going to wait for Monday and ask her who would win the "Bowl" then bet a snot load of $$ on the team she don't pick. Be like shootin' fish in a barrel.

Tory may have to call the Army in tomorrow!
All news today about the "BIG" storm a brewin' Saturday.
Leafs beat the best team in NHL last night & lose against 1 of the worst tonight. Typical season & again Sunday vs. Cheryl's Coyotes.
Snow shovel is ready.

I FINALLY - found a good car, with great specs. Problem? I am in Scarborough, it's in Brampton, and I have a 10am dental appointment tomorrow :/ and my mom needs her car by 1. And the snow. *SIGH* I hope there is no snow, and I can get the car!

January 18, 2019 @ 10:44 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, my Cavs lost again. This is just a very painful season. Also my Coyotes should have won, but they blew it. My Habs did win. As for Superbowl, I don't know. My teams are all out. I said the party is canceled. Weather wasn't bad yesterday morning, thank goodness, but it will be bad. I don't have to go out today or tomorrow, thank goodness. Mel Lastman was the best mayor we ever had. He needed to bring the army in. I was forced to take vacation days before it happened. He had to bring in the army and do what he did. Too bad no more Mel Lastman.

Is it true that Mike Wilner has been moved out of Jays Talk for the 2019 season? I read that somewhere but I haven't seen it verified by anyone that knows the happenings of GTA media.

He's been in that role for like 20 years so I immediately thought of the discussion you, Hebsy, Brian and Milon had on the roundtable about not wanting polarizing personalities in roles that need a wider appeal to work. I guess you don't want Wilner berating callers and driving people away during a period where the team is going to be really bad.

@Mike, brew a tea bag (nothing fancy, just a regular tea bag), keep it a bit damp and place on your eye (closed of course). Do it a couple times a day. Works.

@Mike I had a few of those. they are the worst. Medicated eye drops help.

I could barely open my eye so I had a hot shower and it improved quite a bit. And as the day has progressed, it's opened more and more. No pain or anything, it just looks funny.

The tea bag trick sounds interesting, and reminds me of an old Champ episode.

We'll see if it shows up when I take my pic with Bif on Monday.

Rumour has it that Scott MacArthur left 1050 to be the full-time host of Jaystalk on 590. Then, Wilner sticks with the game broadcasts.

I'll get the straight goods from Wilner when he visits me in 10 days.

January 19, 2019 @ 6:19 PM

Urooj Islam

@Toronto Mike

Oh shit, I didn't know you had Wilner booked to be on soon. Wilner must really like you because he seems to love doing your show even though he has done the deep dive and the KOTJ already.

Also, on an unrelated note, two straight Saturdays during the season with no Leafs game. It just feels weird, like something is off and you just can't quite put your finger on it.

Happy shoveling, everyone, remember to stretch, hydrate and dress accordingly.

January 19, 2019 @ 7:44 PM

Well, my Habs and my Suns lost last night and my Cavs lost as well. This sucks. Hopefully my Suns and Coyotes win tonight. I haven't been out today or yesterday so I have no idea how much snow there actually is. I hate snow. I really do. How will my trainer make it on Tuesday? I guess he will have to cancel if the snow is bad. I never had a sty. Glad yours is getting better, Mike.

I truly enjoy a good snow storm, especially on a weekend. Gets all the neighbours out, and a few of us have snowblowers to help with the plough furrows.
A lot of kids spent the whole day outside enjoying the snow and just being kids.
Hey Mike I saw you and H&F were mentioned in a blog to article for podcasts to listen to, congrats.

Yes, I saw that! Dani Stover put that together. She's very wise!

And yes... I was out shovelling this morning and noticed so many neighbours out doing the same. It was cold, but very sunny, which made it fine. Shovelling on a Sunday is very communal!

January 20, 2019 @ 1:32 PM

bsmntdwllr73

Yes, very wise to dress warmly and stay hydrated when shoveling, as my father's uncle passed away while clearing his driveway in his late fifties, about five years before I was born. One of my cousins was born shortly after that and was named in his honour, although I think there might have also been
some financial incentive behind that! FYI: I'm named after my maternal grandfather (and no, his name wasn't Cellar!!), but quite a good guess for those of you playing the home game version.

I had CONJUNCTIVITIS a couple of times when I was a kid, but none of them was more memorable than the total outbreak that occurred during my Dickensian year in a charmless group home at the age of 6!! Come to think of it, Pink Eye was a hell of a lot more preferable to the handful of times I woke-up in the middle of the night to a stealthy staff member rectally taking my temperature. Please, sir, may I have some less!! And another thing, Gruel ain't no joke. Glad to hear you are on the mend.

I see signs all the time at daycare that read "3 children with pink eye" or whatever. It's always running through that place, but so far my two little ones have managed to avoid it.

January 20, 2019 @ 4:47 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, my Coyotes won last night. Great to win that one. My Suns lost though. They were leading through most of the game, but they lost. Lots of basketball today. Hopefully my Cavs and Nets win. Good that the sty is better, Mike. Anyway, snow is hard to get around in if you're blind. I always hated winter. I remember in school we had to put on our ski pants, boots, and coats just to go outside for 15 minutes for recess. I hated it and wished there was more indoor recess. There was only indoor recess if it was rainy or something.

TM - styes are the worsttttt. My brother got a recurring one, and had to have a procedure done.

Either a teabag, or a hot cloth in a plastic sandwich bag will do the trick. Sometimes I try to take a q-tip and pop it (not advised at all, trust) but that rarely works anyway.

January 21, 2019 @ 9:54 AM

bsmntdwllr73

Absolutely minimal heat in my Parkdale shitshack so the last 3 or 4 nights have been beyond
dreadful. I'd say I was freezing my 'ACORNS' off, but that would be an out-and-out lie as I suspect that
they've wisely gone into extreme hibernation for the time being. Anyway, can't get that rawkin' tune
"Too Cold In the Winter" from that nineties meat 'n' potatoes combo Cry of Love out of my head. Yeah, that awesome track totally & currently sums up my frosty shade of mind. And, no, don't think I'll be eating any hearty bowls of Grape-Nuts any time too soon 'cause visually-speaking, it hits FAR too CLOSE to home!!!

Nice to see that Sony/BMG have finally and very belatedly kicked that poor excuse for human garbage
known as R. Kelly to the curb. Sure, they managed to get around to it well-past this turd's commercial
best before date and its not like they really matter anymore, but better late than never!! As disgusting
as his horrific ALLEGED (don't want TM being sued, LOL!!) reign of deviant abuse has been, in my eyes
he is equally guilty of incredulous and numerous crimes against music: Please see '98s vomit-inducing
"Half On A Baby" for Exhibit A (or don't, if you value both your ears as well as your remaining sense of
innocence!!). Hopefully once the well-deserved legal lynch mobs are done with his crazy ass, they'll
also get to work on dealing with his fellow degenerate known as Usher. Somewhere Rick James is looking up from BELOW and hoping that someone recognizes that he really wasn't so bad after all. NOT!!!

Kawai Leonard not playing again tonight for 3rd game in a row & off again tomorrow for "load management" what ever that means. Resting him for the playoffs??

My Coyotes lost, but they lost to my Habs. Too bad it wasn't in overtime so both could get a point. Well, same old same old for my Cavs. They lost another one. This sucks. It really does. They can't win anymore. My Nets managed to grind out a win. Yes, the Brooklyn Nets will win it all this year. It's their year. No need to post the next open Mike super early for tomorrow. January 24, 2019 @ 9:26 AM

@jj

FWIW, and it's worth nothing, I watched both the Raps and Leafs and played a little game with myself where I could pick one team to win and the other to lose.

I decided I'd rather the Leafs win heading into their break than the Raps. The Raps made it close, but they seemed tired all night and lost a tough one on the road WITHOUT THEIR BEST PLAYER. Yes, I'm yelling that, because it's a significant detail.

Other than a pitcher in baseball and a QB in football does the loss of your best player make as big a difference. And yes, I saw Oladipo go down, but you've got to figure we win that game with Kawhi in the lineup.

TM - thank you! Yes I know Kawhi is out best, but I think it sucks that we struggled against Sacramento - and then have this Indiana game to play with less energy since we tired ourselves out the night before, plus we are missing our best guy.

For teams like Phoenix and Sacramento, we should not struggle without Kawhi in my opinion, and all I can hope is that we have Kawhi straight through the playoffs.

Also, I thought without Ola we'd have won?! Do I want too much?!

So I got a slightly unexpected visit from Captain Nemo and the Nautilus shortly after "The Conners"
ended on Tuesday evening (so around 8:30). Now I have been dealing with an untenable washroom plumbing issue for nigh on two years, but the water actually came from a corroded/frozen pipe
in my bedroom. Thank Aquaman! that not only was I able to actually track down my self-admitted
Troll of a super within mere minutes, but that he actually attempted to deal with it within a reasonable time period. His efforts included calling in one of his off-site lackeys, who inadvertently tried to enroll me into his Latter Day Saints Brotherhood (no joke!!). Nothing like trying to dodge the over-amped proselytizing of a Magic Socks-wearing, Mr. Miyagi type-fella whilst trying to ensure that one's various collections remain relatively unscathed! Alas, I also waited around all day yesterday for additional plumbing work, but it did not come until earlier this morning. Now I have a stylin' hole in my bedroom ceiling to match the epic San Andras Fault-equivalent in my washroom. Park (dale) Avenue living at its very finest!!! (P.S., might be slightly wrong with regards to that magic sock line, but kindly be sure to blame it on too much "South Park" and unwise exposure to the "Book Of Mormon" original cast recording! Also my Mr. Miyagi reference is not based on race, but rather on
the endless flow of psychobabble philosophy he mindlessly bombarded me with throughout a highly-stressful event.)
