We have to do inventory today at work.

So if the rain could just piss off for one damn day that would be great. Thanks.

James Edgar

Happy Canada day Eve everybody.

I'm VERY happy to be Canadian for a lot of reasons ,but i'd like to acknowledge that Canada isn't perfect. Our history with indigenous peoples is not something to be proud of and our relationship with them is still not something I can be comfortable with.

On the other hand we are generally a pretty good bunch of people and I expect that we will as a nation get better at the relationship. Hopefully sooner than later. One example is the kerfuffle on Parliament hill yesterday with the protesters trying to erect a tepee . Yesterday they were almost arrested by the RCMP ,Today the tepee is quite close to the stage for tomorrows ceremonies thanks to those same RCMP (based on CBC news reports so that might not be 100% correct) .

All in all I think as a country we have much to be thankful for and much to look forward to in our future.

June 30, 2017 @ 9:24 AM

I hate the Rain
I hate the TTC
I hate all phone companies
Most of all I hate the Montreal Canadians

June 30, 2017 @ 9:28 AM

I am not first, but I don't care. Well, my Indians won yesterday. That was so awesome. Corey Kluber is a great pitcher. He pitched eight innings only giving up one run. My Orioles also won. That was another great game, very well pitched, but my Orioles got the win. My Diamondbacks lost though even though Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb homered. How can you hate phone companies. Primus is a great phone company. Get Primus. I love the Habs.

Had friends ask me about my top 10 songs every so often ... and I'd never been able to make an accurate list.

Started thinking about it again after the recent "jams" podcasts, and Hebscher and V.O.R. asking about reader contributions too.

Got it down to 30, and still so tough.

Let's see the 30!

June 30, 2017 @ 10:22 AM

Down to 18 after another pass.

I think I'd rather get it down to ten and write up why the songs are favourites.

June 30, 2017 @ 10:50 AM

Rob J

I'm glad James Edgar said 'happy' instead of 'proud'. To paraphrase George Carlin, being from a certain country isn't really a learned skill you can improve and take pride in. It's like saying you're 'proud' to be 5'10'.

June 30, 2017 @ 11:08 AM

James Edgar

@ Rob Yes proud is not the correct term IMHO as well. Carlin was right.

the top ten thing is on my mind too.

@markosaar "I think I'd rather get it down to ten and write up why the songs are favourites." Exactly.

the list is so hard partly because depending on the day of the week mine could change.

June 30, 2017 @ 11:32 AM

Yeah I've used that as criteria to cut really. Has to be something that I could listen to any day and still think it's a fave. At 13 now but have work to do.

I might just leave it at 13 though. Making a list of favourites shouldn't be work :)

Happy Canada day/day weekend, everyone.

Excited to see what the Leafs do with all that cap space tomorrow.

June 30, 2017 @ 1:28 PM

@ All
I'm truly proud to be a Canadian & will always cherish our country as the land of the free.
I was 9 years old for our Centennial in 1967 & there was big hype & still remember celebrating with neighbors then. A great time.
Tomorrow is a special day & celebrate 150 years for all people living in Canada.

Lastly & I want to recognize MLB umpire Mr. Tumpane with his heroics on Wed. saving the life of a distraught person on a bridge in Pittsburg. You are a true hero.

Woke up this morning to the news that Rob Lowe saw Bigfoot. The rest of the day has been a blur as I try to process this bit of information. BIGFOOT!

This is quite possibly the biggest news of the week, and should rank its own post here on the TM website.

A little ex-Jay spat last night as Brandon Morrow (still with a 0.00 ERA) hit infamous homophobe Yunel Escobar leading to the benches emptying during the LA Freeway Series.

I'm giggling like an idiot to myself over the Trojan War tweet.

June 30, 2017 @ 5:20 PM

So last night I made the not entirely unexpected discovery that I have become
an old man. Truth be told, I've probably been an old codger since I took my very
first breath! Anyway, i went to an advance screening of the new Spider-Man movie and
was thoroughly disappointed yet again. Then again, compared to the double-header
turdfest that was the Andrew Garfield Spider-blah experience, Spider-Man: Homecoming
was more akin to Chris Reeve's initial outing as Superman back in 1978! Well, maybe not.
The entire time I felt like I was watching an extra-long, overly politically-correct Afterschool
Special from back in the day!! I guess I'm just not cut for this new breed of Marvel and Dc comic
book movies, as they seldom resemble anything from my nearly 40 years (2018!) of comic
book reading. Say, do you think that it's time to start putting Tobey Maguire's photo on
milk cartons?!? On a completely unrelated matter, how about a future episode of Kick Out
The Jams centered around the 10 Worst Cover Songs? Surely we all remember the Open
Mike Bob Seger/Frankie Ballard brouhaha of several weeks back? I really think that this is
something for the management to consider over the imminent patriotic long weekend!

June 30, 2017 @ 5:30 PM

Related to 10 favourite songs...a friend recently got the rights to publish Brave New Waves archives.

I hope this isn't too spammy but they're available from both and (I think the latter is cheaper for Canadians and offers local pickup if the east end of downtown is convenient to you), but you can stream the entire albums from Bandcamp in advance.

I instantly bought the TPOH one. More are forthcoming.

June 30, 2017 @ 5:54 PM

Rob J

Sorry, me again. The worst thing (by far) about bar-restaurants at this hour is the management's conclusion that friggin "Tim and Sid" needs to be shown on the TV's. Currently I'm watching the annoying one of the 2 riding a bike in an underground parking lot while the other annoying one pretends it's the most hilarious thing he's ever seen.

Thoughts for the week...

Yes, a big thank you to MLB umpire John Tumpane and other good people for saving the life of a woman on the Pittsburgh Bridge. They turned a possible tragedy into a positive story. I hope that woman can now see life in a new way.

The heat will finally come to the Prairies starting Sunday. It's about time!

I am down to 170 pounds thanks to the Toronto Mike diet plan. A few years ago I was over 200 and managed to responsibly get it down to 180-185, which is where I stayed for a long time. I gave it one more crack this spring as I wanted to wear some too tight summer shorts this year, and I am now coming in at 170-172. The shorts now fit comfortably! The great part is that while I eat less and exercise more, I don't really deny myself all that much. We still have our weekly treat night and I still indulge occasionally. The careful monitoring of calories in and calories out is the key. I set my goal at losing one pound per week and try to have the final tally just under that number. So far, so good!

One of my tools is Pedometer Pro by Runtastic. No cell phone app is perfect but this one works well overall for walking. I also use the calorie calculator on MapMyWalk as a benchmark for other activities.

We'll see what free agent frenzy brings us this weekend. The Leafs have advanced more rapidly than expected, but I'm sure they'll stick to the plan.

Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day. I was six during centennial year. I know there was a celebration at boarding school, but I got sick and ended up in the school infirmary. Well, baseball wasn't great last night. My Orioles blew it. They should have won, but they lost it in extra innings. Joey Rickard and Mark Trumbo homered. My Diamondbacks lost as well. That sucked. My Indians got rained out. That was a bummer. It sucks when games get rained out. The Habs will win the cup next year. I know they will. If they don't, the Coyotes will.

July 1, 2017 @ 8:42 AM

Great move by TMLeafs bringing back Dominic Moore. Less expensive than Boyle & a Toronto guy.
BTW Moore lost his wife a few years ago & still playing. This is better than the Hainsey signing.

July 1, 2017 @ 4:47 PM

Happy Canada day!!

My habs picked up Karl Alzner. Got him for 5 years and for a decent number. Now here's hoping they re-sign Radulov.

July 1, 2017 @ 5:28 PM

Rob J

Reminder to all NHL fans over the off-season: Everything your GM does and doesn't do is amazing and puts you closer to the Cup, your team is the only one with a plan and the only one trying to win, only your prospects will blossom (other teams' prospects are overrated and surely will drop off), and all other GM's are making terrible, laughable decisions worthy of ridicule and definitely worth arguing with strangers on social media over.

July 1, 2017 @ 7:43 PM

Well, my Indians lost the first game of a doubleheader. That was no good. Carlos Santana hit a home run to tie it, but then this pitcher named Brian Shaw blows it and loses the game. They did wihn the second game though with a home run by Jose Ramirez. My Diamondbacks also won. Zach Greinke is awesome. My Orioles lost though. Jonathan Schoop hit a home run, but they still lost. Dylan Bundy didn't last long in that game. He can pitch better than that. Anyway, I hope my Habs resign Radulov. Hopefully Karl Alzner is a good pickup. It's about time my Habs win the cup.

July 2, 2017 @ 8:28 AM

Why in the Hell did Toronto sign Marleau - 37 years old, 3 years at 6.25MM/yr.
Moore & Hainsey good signs younger & shorter term, but Marleau.
Need defense not over the hill forwards.
Jagr's still available - got for it Lou & Shanny.

July 2, 2017 @ 8:29 PM

Rob J

It's in their DNA, in the tradition of Lindros, Allison, and Nolan in days of yore. Makes it harder to get Tavares next year.

To quote my bud CJ, they’ve added a durable player who can skate like a millennial and score like an all-star. He’s a favourite of coach Mike Babcock and gives the organization high-end depth at a position where they need options with both James van Riemsdyk and Leo Komarov one year away from free agency.

July 2, 2017 @ 9:43 PM

Rob J

The Leafs are lucky to have fans like CJ!

July 2, 2017 @ 9:49 PM

Marleau - 3 years @6.25M/yr & No Trade Clause also. I admit he is a decent player but for $, not worth it at his age.
JVR, Komorov & Bozak will probably be traded by trade deadline day. Too bad.
All sports teams has no allegiances to players any more, other than Crosby, Thortan, Price & Twins in Vancouver.
Leafs just got 10 years older over with other signings also.

July 2, 2017 @ 10:10 PM

Well, how about those Indians? Actually they almost lost it. They brought in a pitcher who didn't pitch for a while. Anyway, they won 11 to 8. How about Jose Ramirez. He hit a homer from both sides of the plate again. Awesome. Lonnie Chisenhall also homered. Edwin Encarnacion had a double and a triple. My Indians are in first place where they belong. My Orioles also won. That's great. Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo homered. Kevin Gausman pitched a gem like he has done before. My Diamondbacks also won, so baseball was really good yesterday. My Habs signed Carey Price long term. This means my Habs have a great chance of winning the cup. They deserve it.

July 3, 2017 @ 8:47 AM

Jason from Sudbury

Radulov signed in Dallas. He wanted a 5 year deal which he got, Habs only wanted to give him 4. I was really hoping they would be able to hang on to him.

July 3, 2017 @ 2:25 PM

Not a lot of talk about our Blue Jays,...... 4.5 games out of the wildcard, half the season to go,.....

For me, I think they're done.
I think they'll continue to flirt with .500, but that's as good as it gets.
(I hope I'm wrong)

I say this based on the results of 81 games played this year.
I'm a big believer in one of Bill Parcell's quotes, "You are what your record says you are."

There were reasons why mgmt wanted to get younger, less dependent on right handed hitting, and less dependent on power hitting after last season. I thought these were solid goals for last off-season. Obviously very little changed during the off-season, mgmt failed to address, let alone achieve their expressed objectives. This season's team has been a disappointment and I don't think mgmt is all that surprised.

- 5th in the AL East, the only division in MLB with 4 teams at, or above .500.
- An abysmal record against AL East opponents: getting swept by the Red Sox and losing 2 of 3 to the Orioles at home is just bad baseball.
- 8 other AL teams are within striking distance of that 2nd wildcard spot.
- Outside of Smoak, every other offensive player is underachieving.
- Pitching has been a problem, injuries and inconsistency, the main culprits,
- At no time this season have the Jays put hitting and pitching together in the same game for an extended run.
- Trading Grilli, trading for Montero, is merely rearranging, "the deck chairs on the Titanic"

Happy for Justin Smoak, but not looking forward to Houston's visit later this week, never mind the next three vs the Yankees!

July 3, 2017 @ 4:03 PM

Well, too bad my Habs couldn't hold onto Alex Radulov. It's not good he had to go to Dallas, but he did. At least they have Carey Price who will take them to the Stanley Cup. They haven't won it in a long time, and they need to win it. Well, my Orioles lost another one. That was no good. It was over after the second inning. They better win today. My Indians and my Diamondbacks didn't play last night. Well, my Orioles aren't doing well, but my Indians are in first place where they belong. My Diamondbacks will make the playoffs as well. I think my Indians should win the World Series. They should have won it last year, but didn't.

July 4, 2017 @ 8:00 AM

@ twins from bolton
Maybe a high school crowd in Texas, but not anywhere in GTA that I know of.
Apart from home openers, crowds at Argo home games in the last 3 or 4 years look to maybe about 5000, in spite of whatever inflated attendance number gets announced.

Zicarelli article in Sun after game has the same familiar sounding complaints about BMO Field that they made about Rogers Centre -- Argos can't practice there, it leads to supposedly bad scheduling with some long gaps between home games, and media always noticing how empty the stadium looks. If they could go back in time a few years, instead of MLSE spending more than $100 million to expand BMO Field, the Bell/Tanenbaum part of MLSE would have been better off spending a fraction of that amount on a small cheap new Argo-only stadium of 5 to 8000 seats somewhere else.

July 4, 2017 @ 3:41 PM

Speaking of attendance at sports events, on Saturday TFC II (they're the 'farm' team for TFC, like the Marlies are for the Leafs) had a home game in Vaughan where the attendance was announced as 156.
I can only count about 90 in the stands. Maybe they were including all the players, officials, and season-ticket holders who were no-shows?

I don't want to talk about baseball. It was not a good night. My Indians lost. Corey Kluber pitched a gem, but got no run support. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost. Last night really really sucked. I need my Indians to stay in first where they belong. They really sucked last night and couldn't get any runners home. My Orioles and Diamondbacks need wins as well.

July 5, 2017 @ 8:23 AM

Baseball sucked again last night. Bring on football, basketball, or hockey. My Indians lost again. This sucks. They can't hit with runners in scoring position. Neither can my Orioles. My Diamondbacks also lost. It really sucks big time. When will any of them win again? It's awful.
