I'm first. Goody. Well, my Indians beat my Orioles. My Indians won the series three games to one. Homer from my Indians came from an unlikely source, Eric Gonzalez. Seth Smith homered for my Orioles. My Diamondbacks also won last night. Paul Goldschmidt homered again. He's really heating up. Well, my Orioles aren't doing well, but they will come along. World Series will be Diamondbacks versus either my Indians or Orioles.

I heard Don Cherry's voice on a radio ad for "winduz" -- specifically, a brand of winduz that "burgers" can't break. Unlike his earlier ads for the same company, these newer ads now have another voice after Cherry is finished purposefully mentioning that it is "windows" that are being sold, although how or why anyone would ever be attempting to use burgers to break these winduz is not explained

When your Indians beat your Orioles, it must be nice knowing you're guaranteed a win.

Conversely, you're guaranteed a loss.

Now my head hurts...

Rob J released its annual fan survey ranking each MLB's homer TV broadcast crew. Rogers employees Martinez and Tabler finished 21st while the Giants' venerable crew of Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow (again) ranked #1.

Personally my fave TV booth post-Scully is the Mets' crew of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling. However, more and more, my best friend watching sports is the mute button.

General podcast comment below!

Mike, you're killing it. I'm caught up now and what amazes me is how different the episodes have been.

Hebscher and Wilner kicking out the jams was great fun.

You and Elvis "shooting the shit" had me LOLing.

Fred Penner discussing his career and success was informative and interesting.

12:36 was his usual bombastic treasure trove.

Four very different styles in one week.

This is why I'm a Patron. Thanks for the content!

Ditto what Sam in Pickering said. A great week for podcasts. ( disclaimer i'm only 1/3 of the way through 12:36)

I do feel a bit bad about dissing Wilners music selection though. Yes most was not to my taste ( Loved the Ramblin' Man selection though, not in my top 10 but a great song IMHO and of course the Hip at the end) but i liked the podcast and his stories about the songs and as you said to 12:36 it's HIS list and I'd rather he be honest and not try to seem cool.

@James Edgar

Here's what I really, really liked about Wilner's songs. The man was genuine with zero shame. It was authentic.

I'm just glad he didn't throw in certain songs to appear "cool".

By the way, Hebsy's songs were fantastic as well, and I'm not at all suggesting he threw in a Zappa track to appear "cool". That man loves his music, and that's what makes this series so great.

If I get $5000 more a month via Patreon I will quit my job and do at least three Kick Out the Jams a week! :)

Thanks for listening and for the kind words!

I aim to record one episode a week, but somehow this week got away from me. If you include Hebsy late last week, that's six episodes in about a week. Please do not get used to this frequency. :)

Steve Kowch. A greater shill than Christy Clark.

- claims US listening to talk radio is surging among Millennials. Ignores his own chart showing that the audience increase from 2011 to 2017 is less than 1 share point (looks around a .5). So I guess that means my Bitcoin stash "Surged" yesterday because it went up a few bucks in value.

- fails to factor in the ALL the shit going on in the USA (Trump, FBI, Comey, SNL, etc).

- Claims listening is up in Canada, then points out the French speaking demo was down in Montreal. Males were down in Montreal. Female listening in Vancouver was down. Male and female listening was down in Edmonton. Male and female listening in Toronto fell.

- Compares this book with the last book yet in radio sales they focus on long term trending in sales.

PS Steve. Math is really neat. One thing about math is that when you have 3 listeners and you get a fourth the percentile increase = substantial.

PPS. Talk radio is a blood sport. If i hear it I do my best to not slit my throat and ruin the interior of my new car.

I just rode my bike through the new Trillium Park & trail at Ontario Place. It is fantastic, and for those of us that cycle the Martin Goodman Trail along there, it is a nice diversion at the eastern end of the old Ontario Place grounds. It is currently fairly small, but if this is the type of thing they have planned for the grounds it is going to be a beautiful space when they are finished. I also didn't realize that you can ride/walk inside most of the Ontario Place grounds all the way to the western end and cross back across the water at the bridge that's just west of Atlantis. Along the way you can check out pretty much anywhere in the Ontario Place grounds through where the rides used to be - there are some photo-ops to be had with old neglected ticket booths, buildings etc that are still there.

Dear Management,

Our crack team of PR reps would like to remind you Mr Irv simply wrote an opinion piece. Blogs, such as this one, require user input and opinions. Mr Irv welcomes countering opinions, but would like to point out the attack on his post was a personal attack. At no point did Voice of Reason stipulate WHY he disliked Mr Irv's post. He simply attacked him. Under the "Terms of Trolling" issued by Weev in 2009, this is clearly an attempt at trolling Mr Irv. As you are aware, Mr Irv is a former black hat hacker & master troll and said comments have more effect on this forum than on him.

Mr Irv wishes to extend an olive leaf and will be stopping by VoR's house in July with a fruit basket.

I go to that Galleria mini-mall (mentioned in today's news) at Dufferin and Dupont maybe two or three times a year. Going inside feels like you're stepping into the mini-mall that time forgot, like it was really closed 30 years ago but someone took the locks and chains off the doors and a few people wander into it out of curiosity.
I thought I heard a while back that it was going to be demolished and a new condo complex was going to be built on the site.

It's often implied I start flame wars here. No, I post opinions and certain people in radio, media or those close to people in it freak out. There is a poster on here who once confused me with another guy and emailed the staff at the station I worked at (casual gig). A certain pod-caster claimed me only dabbling in radio was because I was a failure in it. It ignores the fact I'm in year 18 of tech, love my job in cyber crime, and make a comfortable living.

The trolling started because years ago I used to frequent SOWNY and other forums and I pointed out that the industry of radio, news, media, print, etc had no future. I said the leadership was devoid of creativity and the business was a medium in decline. I pointed it out never adapted to technology & it was a bunch of old white men, their better days behind them. I suppose the amusing part is that what I said would happen...did happen. The industry is decimated and a lay off can be career ending.

Hence my post about Steve Kowch. No disrespect to what he's accomplished, but he comes across as a shill for the industry now. It's all about cherry picking only the good news about the industry. In my opinion a professional acknowledges the challenges too. A broadcaster in KW once told me that radio was like "a guy who was washed away in a raging river clinging to a few valuable possessions and when you ask him if he needs help he shouts I'm great". An apt analogy.

Flour Power

So, a bit of insider info re: the whole Robin Hood flour E. Coli debacle. Most of this is from reports given to Health Canada.

There are at least 7 tainted shipments of wheat. No one knows how the contamination happened.

Since it reached the 20kg production runs, it means there is going to be a LOT of industrial / commercial products recalled, especially unbaked pie shells and raw cookie dough. There will be many, many more recalls of these products as bakers discover their industrial flour has been recalled.

This is huge, because Robin Hood makes pretty much all the flour in Canada (yes, RH makes Five Roses flour). They make most house brand flours, too. About the only house brand they don't make is PC / No Name flour.

Keep in mind this has been going on for almost a year now. How it hasn't become a huge media scandal is beyond me.

Best advice: treat raw flour from RH as you would any other "contaminate", like raw chicken. Avoid raw consumption (including flour dusting surfaces, raw doughs, etc). Wash hands and surfaces after contact (you usually don't think to wash down counter / door handlers that have had flour touch them). Don't consume raw flour products, even those bought commercially (saying this as a lover of raw cookie dough!)

Subscribe to Health Canada or CFIA twitter / newsletters to keep getting new recalls as they happen. Again, there will be plenty now that the industrial sized flour bags are confirmed contaminated.

What I saw on cp24 news last night as 1 of lead stories was something I said out loud WTF.
University of Toronto is granting black student graduates a special graduation ceremony. The reporter talked to MOM 1st for a while & only to the son who is graduating for a very short time.
Essentially the subject was that the black students at UofT do not get the respect or recognition that others get. This is not primary or high school this is an education that forms your future employment.
I graduated in 1979 & Hart House/Convocation Hall was full to capacity with everyone having a good time afterwards. Graduation is a time for observance of the accomplishment everyone achieved with their hard work to finish their curriculum regardless of race, creed, colour, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc., etc. WE are graduates as one having something in common.
Why UofT granted this "special ceremony" is beyond me as it only divides culture & people.
BTW - Mom did 90% of the talking & graduate only 10% - How in the hell did this student graduate.
I'm not at all a prejudiced person but just find this news from cp24 very disrespectful for all the other graduates.

Aye, but it does matter.

Unless you're a member of an oppressed group, you have no idea what it's like. You're a white, heterosexual man living in Canada. How can you ever know what it's like to be black?

June 23, 2017 @ 6:29 PM

That is irrelevant. ALL GRADUATES HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON AS THEY ALL HAVE GRADUATED FROM UOFT IN 2017 REGARDLESS OF ..................... & a certain group didn't want that.
It doesn't matter in this situation as we are NOT discussing social differences with overall lifestyles & perception of race, creed, colour, religion, sexual orientation.
UofT accepts students on their marks from high school from everywhere as it's perceived as 1 of the best universities overall in Cda. Students from other countries apply & get accepted there & our Cdn. students aren't. Is that right?
It's a diverse culture at UofT & even was when I was there & everybody treated equally as a student then. Maybe things have changed the last few years but cannot believe it with so many minorities there.

Pretty soon Retro Ontario will have to dust off some Sears ads from the past with the filing for credit protection. They were an industry titan at one time, and sadly their roots were in mail order, not unlike Amazon which dominates this sector in North America today.
Sad for the people affected through layoffs and the real possibility of no severance pay.

June 23, 2017 @ 9:38 PM

June 24, 2017 @ 1:40 AM

Urooj, thanks to the incredible weakness of the American League, it is very early. 3 games out of a playoff spot with 3 months to go is right in the thick of it.

If they were in the National League with this record, they would be something like 11 games out and already trading veterans.

June 24, 2017 @ 2:42 AM

What a bad night. My Indians lost. They got shut out. Trevor Bauer only had one bad inning, but my Indians couldn't score any runs. Also my Orioles lost. That sucked as well. My Diamondbacks lost as well. Everyone lost. It sucked last night. I need them to win.

June 24, 2017 @ 8:34 AM

The NL has become very anti-climactic. Four of the playoff spots are essentially locked in except the Central division title. The 3-way race in the West could be epic as the Dodgers seek their 5th straight division crown, though the 2 that fall short with be Wild-Cards. Lots of sellers for July 31!

We were at a party last night celebrating friends from France's 25th wedding anniversary and 20th anniversary of immigrating to Canada.

I only mention it because we heard of a couple of really sad stories last night that REALLY made us think.

The first story was about another couple , the woman from France the husband from Chile. last week completly unexpectedly the husband dropped dead from a heart issue. Very unexpected and quite a shock, we only know them through our french friends so had no idea and we were looking forward to seeing them. Very sad for our friend and her 3 kids.

The second was as shocking if not more , another french couple brought the husbands sister and her 10 month old son to the party, ( And her awesome dog Corona :) ) I was shocked t learn from my wife that her husband had committed suicide two days after the baby was born. It must have been hellish for her.

It certainly was a big reminder to us that we should not be taking anything for granted! Never leave the house without saying how much you love your Family and cherish every minute you have.

Although I was a faithful Argo follower way back in the '70s, I haven't been a football fan for many a year. I just catch the very odd game now & then.

That said, I watched today's Argo\Ticats game & it was great. Ricky Ray with 506 yards passing and a boatload of highlight reel catches. Excellent entertainment.

I used to be an Argos fan in the 80's, but in the late 90's my son started to play football in the Hamilton East football league (Oakville didn't have a league then) and really got into the vibe and culture of the Ticats and the grassroots fans support. We went to many a comp'd Ticat game with the team at Ivor Wynn, and thoroughly enjoyed the Oska Wee Wee chant etc. There were a few dark moments when the Concordes came to play and there were some drunken rough housing in the stands.

Do those concrete barriers and fences being set up for a month before the IndyCar race in July get in the way of people going to all the other events at the stadium and other venues at Exhibition Place and the amphitheatre across the road? Last year the ward's city councillor Mike Layton (in a Sun article headlined 'Uncertainty clouds future of Honda Indy in downtown Toronto') sounded as though he wished it would end. You'd think there must be other places it could be without the need to close a major road like Lake Shore Boulevard. There's a permanent track, Mosport, about a 70-minute drive away (according to Google maps), to the north of Bomanville. And if the race's promoters wanted to continue inside the city, maybe they could try to work out a deal with Bombardier to use Downsview Airport for one weekend a year? I would think a temporary track could be set up there with the grandstands and pit area to the west of the runway in the large paved area by "The HoopDome" and "The Hangar", and comparably fewer concrete barriers needed if the rest of the track consisted of the runway and taxiways. The TTC Downsview Park subway/GO Train station near there will be open and operating by 2018.

I don't think MoSport is designed for IndyCar. then again I could say the same thing about Lakeshore. My comment is that they close all kinds of roads in Toronto for crap that can be done elsewhere. Why cancel the only road closure event that actually needs a road, and is actually kind of cool

June 26, 2017 @ 9:14 AM

Indycars could run at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (formerly Mosport) and in fact were considering a temporary move there in 2015 during the Pan Am Games. They instead decided to move their race weekend so they could stay at the Exhibition grounds.

The reason they stay at the Exhibition is simple - attendance is much higher. The hardcore race fan would trek out to CTMP, but the promoters are looking for the casual fan who is attracted by the carnival atmosphere, the beer gardens, and the short subway/streetcar ride. Without the casual fans, the race loses its luster to Honda and the other sponsors.

Downsview was also considered in the past - moving the race there would require a multi-million dollar infrastructure investment (repaving, etc.) and at this stage of the race there is no way to justify it.

If I had to bet, I would say the race is going to disappear with a whimper over the next couple of years - Michael Andretti's race promotion company has milked all the $$$ it can from the event, and the dwindling crowds and lack of "buzz" mean that there will be no reason to keep it alive next time a project at Exhibition Place forces a course change or other capital investment. Part of me will be sorry to see it go, but it is really just a shadow of its past at this point anyways.

re: Fred Patterson @FreddieP55
@torontomike @AnthonyPetrucci Hope the Argos chewed up the field real good. So that little creep Giosucko has more to cry about, after faking another knee injury.

I see FreddieP is embracing his inner-Trump.

It's stunning how some use Social Media to prove how much of an A-hole they are.

question for the Argo fan..
when was the last time the Argo's had a player of Giovinco's quality on their football team?

June 26, 2017 @ 11:50 AM

collingwood dave

@ mrmojorisinca, I don't know who Giovinco is. I guess that means he must play soccer.....

June 26, 2017 @ 12:44 PM

he does in fact, probably the best player MLS has ever had playing.
go to a game, watch him dazzle worth the price of admission for a TFC and Argo game combined :)

@mrmojorinca..Would love to go to a MLS Argo combo, but it is a 2 hour drive. I also have MS and stairs, crowds and inclines are not my friend. Peace......

June 26, 2017 @ 2:05 PM

then you should watch a game from home.and he will dazzle you.

You don't need to like soccer to appreciate an athlete at the top of their game.

June 26, 2017 @ 2:53 PM

Hahaha Giovinco? Dazzle? Honestly? the guy who wasn't good enough to make Italys 2016 Euro squad... or the WC qualifying team? Italy's resurrecting the corpse of Pelle as their CF and they still didn't even bother to put him on the team!

Stop pretending the Giovinco is a world class player, and the MLS is a world class soccer... you're embarrassing yourself

I know that we like to consider ourselves a big time sport city, but they're never moving the F1 race from Montreal, so this Indy is all we got. its a decent race, though the street circuit makes it hard to pass... apparently passing is overrated anyways. Look at F1

June 26, 2017 @ 3:47 PM

Michael Andretti got out of the race promotion company a few years back. It's now "Green Savoree Racing Promotions", who apparently also run the St. Petersburg FL IndyCar street race and own the Mid-Ohio permanent track.

Mosport ("Canadian Tire Motorsport Park") would appear to be co-owned since 2011 by Carlo Fidani, whose name shows up on lists of Canadian billionaires. I recognize that name from seeing it on a hospital in Mississauga that he presumably donated the cash to build. If Green Savoree throws in the towel on continuing in Toronto, I would assume Fidani could get an IndyCar race at Mosport if he wanted, even if it involved making some improvements and upgrades to the track and facilities. And they could probably hire a bunch of school buses for a weekend to shuttle people to Mosport from the Oshawa GO station (and maybe charge them an extra $20 each) if that would encourage some from the GTA to attend.

June 26, 2017 @ 6:08 PM

Well, my Indians finally won another game, but it was a slugfest. I was almost going to turn it off early, but they came back and won. That's great winning 15 to 9, but they were losing 9 to 2. Hope they can do that again. My Diamondbacks also won last night. Another great win. My Orioles didn't play. Hopefully all my teams win tonight. My Indians have to start winning at home as much as they're winning on the road.

@ Daniel..

I'm not pretending MLS is world class league..but Giovinco is by and large the best player in the MLS.
and he didn't make the Italy squad because where he plies his trade not because he can't play with the best of them.

say what you want..he still fun to watch.

I asked my bud Elvis why Giovinco is here if he's so good and was told it's likely because he's small.

June 27, 2017 @ 11:15 AM

he is small..but I'd go with the Money :)
He was a youth product of Juventus, one of the biggest clubs in the world so its not like he can't play with the best of them..just he wont be a) starter on the big clubs b) a full 90 minute match in Europe
I believe he was offered 3 million or so to stay in Europe.
he is paid 7 or 7.5 here with the ability to walk to the streets with his family without harassment
so quality of life I'm sure made it a little easier to move here.

June 27, 2017 @ 11:26 AM

Why is it that some of these inexplicably angry-old-man Argo/CFL types (and I would assume it's a small minority) have this childish petulance towards the rest of the city for not being as interested as they are? Do you hear that from fans of other sports not as popular as they were 40 years ago? For example, have you ever heard of a horse racing person saying he wants to punch them young-uns in the face because so few of them show up at the track nowadays?

Once you get to be beyond childhood, and certainly by the time you're a middle-aged adult, don't you know what you like and don't like, and realize everyone has different tastes, and it's not some kind of insult for someone to not have all the same interests and hobbies as you?
And if I want to go watch something, it is because I do want to actually watch it. If possible I would prefer to avoid being in the middle of an overcrowded audience of teenage or 20-something drunk idiots.

I had to drop my wife's car off for a repair yesterday and used the TTC to get back to my office and then home later.

What a crappy trip. If you have to ride it daily you have my sympathy. yesterday could have been an anomaly of course. But I suspect it was not. the only highlight was that my line 2 subway's AC was working. Of course it was only about 19 when i left work so it wasn't entirely welcome.

Damn, I got the Andretti Greed, er, Andretti Green split wrong. And Mosport probably does get the IndyCar race when the downtown event goes belly-up.

Ron Fellows is a co-owner of CTMP, and for all intents and purposes the face of the ownership group. He has not been shy about chasing bigger events like NASCAR and IndyCar, and has money on the table to improve the facility in order to make them happen.

And for the record, Ricky Ray has had 10 times the impact in his sport, more than Giovinco will ever be in MLS. Watching Ray and SJ Green carve up the Ticats was painful to me personally, but it was one hell of a show. Toronto should appreciate these guys while they can.

If any of you Argos fans happened to catch the ball from Lirim Hajrullahu's 100th field goal on Sunday, he is looking to make a deal to get it back. Hit him up directly, or through the team or Mike Hogan.

June 27, 2017 @ 7:59 PM

Not an argos fan but I do wish them well. Same with tfc

I just shake my head when tfc fans go on about the quality of their players/team/league. Its insulting to the intelligence of real soccer fans... if you just said this is bottom rung England championship division soccer but I like them, I would understand

It also makes me shake my head when Torontonians refuse to follow CFL because they only support major league sports, then go out and watch tfc, which isn't major league, no matter what the league tries to tell you

btw Messi and Neymar are both about 5'6. Think Argentina and Brasil are leaving them off their national teams?

June 27, 2017 @ 8:39 PM

Why do you find the need to insult MLS soccer fans? I find it hard to believe anyone of them will try and say it's a top league like any in Europe Yet you continue to say that TFC fans do this. However they will say they are entertained by what they watch but you you don't just disagree you try to hurl insults at their soccer intelligence . Do the world a favour and leave your insults at the door.

And why don't you go search how many players under 1.7m don't ever play for their national team or big club and not list the two most accomplished players that may have ever played the game.

June 28, 2017 @ 6:33 AM

June 28, 2017 @ 7:09 AM

Why would the TTC win an award. They don't deserve one. Thank goodness I don't have to use it every day. I don't work, but when I was working, during my last few years, I worked at home. Anyway, people jump onto the tracks. They should put a gate up so that people don't do that, and the gate should only open when the subway door opens. Also they close the subway lots of weekends. Buses can be slow as well or they could break because the battery dies. Oh well, I hate the TTC. It's free for me though, but I wouldn't pay for that service. Well, my Orioles won last night. Great game. Let's win again tonight. My Diamondbacks also won in extra innings. Homer by David Peralta. My Indians lost again. That sucks. They only scored one run. They have so much trouble winning at home.

June 28, 2017 @ 7:45 AM

Ok I see that may have been over the top :)

I do however stand by giovinco can dazzle! I'm not claiming he would look like that in Europe( although he can play with the big boys, pun intended. He may not be the best in Europe but he is the best North America has and that still says something for his quality

Now I'm off

June 28, 2017 @ 7:55 AM

The Voice of Reason

I have to agree with Daniel. The CFL brand of football is secondary to the NFL brand and Torontonians choose to ignore the Argos but are going crazy for a B level league like MLS.

It would be nice to see the city embrace the Marlies as on a league level the AHL is comparable to MLS.

Geography plays a huge role here. MLS is the best league in Canada / US. It doesn't matter that there are better leagues in Europe or South America or even Mexico.

Geography matters here.

June 28, 2017 @ 9:14 AM

Assuming that whatever territorial arrangement for Toronto that may have existed with the NFL and the Bills has been discontinued, wouldn't BMO Field be a good place for an NFL preseason game? They are almost entirely pointless from a spectator point of view since about three quarters of the games involve mostly players who will be cut, but it's probably guaranteed that at least about 20 or 25,000 will show up if it involves a team with a large following of traveling fans, like Green Bay, Pittsburgh, NY Giants, etc.

June 28, 2017 @ 10:24 AM

@Toronto Mike

If the quality of hockey here was at the same level as the Italian hockey league. and vice versa. and we knew that the Italian league had all the best hockey players... would we still watch the Leafs? I doubt it, I really doubt it

H.O.E - not enough capacity, even for a preseason NFL game. NFL makes their season ticket owner buy preseason games too. so you have 40,000 preseason tickets sold, even if nobody shows up

If hockey was an Italian game, I say yes. Because hockey is a Canadian game, I also doubt it.

But soccer is not a Canadian game, so the fans support MLS.

I too fell in the rush of the MLS Cup. Toronto is a fair weather sports city with the exception of the Leafs.

I do hope the MLS improves to the point where it can compete in a FIFA World Club Cup at some point. Maybe Toronto could win the Champions League this year and elevate the entire MLS, that would be hurdle one.

June 28, 2017 @ 12:01 PM

I don't care much one way or the other about TFC or the Argos ( formerly a regular attendee at argo games 1979-84ish) but i'll put this out there .

A friend from Brazil described MLS Soccer to me as the equivalent of 12-14 year old soccer back in Brazil. so from his perspective not so good. That was before TFC was actually a good team in this league so he might have a slightly better opinion now. he has definitely gone to some games though as it is of course the only game in town. We haven't gotten together lately but ill be asking him how it looks next time i see him for sure.

As for the Argos i actually agree with freddieP that CFL football is (generally) a better game than the NFL . Of course that comes with caveat that the better athletes are playing in the NFL . When i was a fan that was not always the case but economics took their toll.

Why not a fan now?First it was simply that i was too busy with trying to get myself established after i got out of school and lost touch. Now there's simply too many other things clamouring for attention from work to other Sports i find way more entertaining (MotoGP , World Superbike ,WEC and F1) to riding my own bike to family and etc.

I find all the anguish put out by both sets of fans a bit tiresome that's for sure.

@ H.o.E.. " angry-old-man / Argo CFL types" Nice one I'm getting that quote on a T-shirt....

June 28, 2017 @ 1:16 PM

@ Daniel -- I think you're confusing different things that don't apply to neutral site NFL preseason games. There are no season ticket-holders at neutral sites. There is a preseason game every year (other than once recently when it got canceled on game-day by bad paint on the field) in Canton Ohio at a high school/college stadium that holds about 22,000 . That said, the NFL seems to have pretty much eliminated other neutral site preseason games just in the last few years. They were very common before then, in many places all around the U.S. and sometimes Canada at stadiums of various sizes.

Regarding soccer and Toronto -- In the last 40 or 50 years there's obviously been a lot of people coming here from other parts of the world. And almost all of them, even the ones not from Europe Or Latin America, would be at least be familiar with soccer and watch The World Cup, certainly more familiar with it than American/Canadian gridiron football or (ice) hockey. And there's lot's of them from countries where people watch their leagues knowing it may not be one of the top two or three in the world. And even in countries like Italy and England they watch their local team even if it's not in the country's top league.

June 28, 2017 @ 1:27 PM

The Voice of Reason

Regardless, of where people come from, spectator sports in North America are on a slow decline. The games are no longer "events".

Many teams, including (but not limited to) the big four pro leagues are struggling to find creative ways to boost sales. Some are using coupon platforms like Groupon; others have tried dynamic pricing and other promotions.

In general, people just care less about sports these days. Parents are tired of having their kids look up to a bunch of narcissistic jocks, many of whom participate in borderline (or actual) criminal behavior. All of a sudden, letting them play that new Zelda game doesn’t seem so bad anymore in comparison. In fact, new studies show that while televised sports rots your brain, playing mario increased grey matter — go figure. Parents are recognizing that the surest path a successful future for their kids isn’t sports, its academics, science, and computers. Thus, less emphasis is being placed on youth sports which are now more “for fun.” Speaking of youth sports, more kids are into individual sports than the big money making team sports. And some sports like golf is tending to lose all interest with the local populace simply due to time and money constraints. Meanwhile, medical research continues to prove that contact sports like football are extremely dangerous for the brain and long-term mental health (anxiety, depression, etc.)

June 28, 2017 @ 1:37 PM

I wonder if there's any angry-old-man Kabaddi types in Brampton or around Gerrard St. E. who think there must be something wrong with Mike Richards and Bastl for not being a fan of the sport?

June 28, 2017 @ 3:04 PM

Rob J

Well, how about those Indians. That was great that they won. No homers, but they won and Trevor Bauer pitched a great game. My Orioles lost though. They got shut out. That's no good at all. My Diamondbacks also lost which is no good.
