Cold as you know what on the Prairies at the moment. No, we did not get snow like Calgary but it has been miserable and rainy the last two days.

So it took my third or fourth adopted team to get through to the Stanley Cup final and I will be pulling for the Sharks over the Pens. My wife likes Sid so we are on rare opposite ends on something this time.

I bought a new Sony Xperia 5 to go along with my Galaxy 4. I am loving this new phone! I haven't decided if I'm a convert yet because I'm still learning the nuances of the Sony but it's a tough choice between the two.

The Blue Jays are 24-25, 4 out of the WC. Any predictions?

Since the Pens drafted Sid, I've been rooting for them once my Leafs were eliminated. And my Leafs only made the playoffs once since then... so I'm quite pleased to see Crosby getting back to the SCF. And there's bonus Kessel fun, too.

But I don't mind the Sharks. Would be nice to see Joe Thornton hoist a cup. And James Reimer, too!

I used to carry a Samsung Galaxy, but got a taste of the LGG2 and loved it. I've since upgraded to an LGG3, and it's still going strong.

Plenty of good Android options out there now....

May 27, 2016 @ 9:03 AM

100% agree Mike!

Sid or Joe winning Im all for..

I called Pen and Kings Final but San Jose works too LOL

May 27, 2016 @ 9:13 AM

I'm also happy for Phil Kessel..not sure why..I guess I feel for the 8Million dollar guy who was cast in the wrong role in this city..I blame management for that..

Funny, because I called a Pens vs. Kings final, too. In fact, I drafted 60% Kings in my playoff pool, which explains why I'm finishing 2nd last.

May 27, 2016 @ 9:22 AM

two players from the Leafs Team lasy year are playing for the Stanley Cup LOL

The Sharks alone have James Reimer, Roman Polak and Nick Spaling. So three right there.

May 27, 2016 @ 9:30 AM

I stand corrected..LOL I forgot about Polak and Spaling.

May 27, 2016 @ 9:32 AM

I'm not first, but that's okay. Yes, it will be hot here. I don't mind as long as I don't have to do any heavy exercise in it or anything. My Orioles lost again. The only positive was a home run by my favourite player, Mark Trumbo. My Diamondbacks also lost. My Orioles and Diamondbacks both got swept. Anyway, big game tonight. My Cavs should be able to find a way to win on the road. I say Cavs in six. Hopefully it won't have to go to a game seven. Then I will be closer to winning the pool. Well, Bill, the leader has the Raptors. A couple guys from Mike's work have the Warriors and Thunder. Mike is the guy who did have the Cavs, but dropped out for some reason. Even if he didn't drop out, I would have been cheering for the Cavs anyway, that wouldn't have changed. Anyway, let's go Cavs. Close it out tonight.

After years of using apple products, I've bought a Samsung S7 and have switched over the to android world...

What do people suggest as the best app for listening to podcasts on android?

May 27, 2016 @ 10:35 AM

Without a doubt, Google Play Music. It's a native app on Android, and they just recently added podcasts.

It's fantastic. Here's the Google Play Music link to my podcast:

I was cheering for the Kings,Ducks,Blues,Red Wings,Panthers,Lightning,Caps, and BlackHawks.Anyways my two favorite teams that I have been cheering for are Sharks & Penguins Anyway are in the final. All I need is some guy to kick off whom has either those two teams in a pool so I can take them over and win my 100.00

What do you think of Simmons's article about the Raps at the casino? Bullshit, right?

May 27, 2016 @ 11:15 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Although it's been overblown, I thought the Simmons article was fair.

Personally, if it's the night before a playoff game, I'd like to think the players would have the sense to avoid the casino at 2am. The optics are bad, even if the casino is attached to the hotel.

And for sure the players should have the good sense not to fly to a graduation ceremony and back on the day of a game seven. That's a no-brainer.

May 27, 2016 @ 11:19 AM

at least they weren't doing anything crazy, like getting drunk, high etc
should have they been in the casino..maybe not..but if your in your room and awake at 2 am then what is really the difference?
just looks bad

Precisely. It just looks bad.

DeRozan was in his hotel room watching a movie at 2am. That's more sensible.

Re: Vickers attacking protester

Vickers must have some type of hero syndrome going on in his head or something. To start, it's not his business to interfere in protests happening in another country. Secondly, the protester is a supporter of imprisoned Irish Republicans who presumably have the support of Sinn Fein and the IRA. While not mentioned on mainstream North American media there is an elevated risk of violence from dissident IRA members of late. #Fenian

So yesterday was an interesting one.

Thanks to a massive fuck-up on my part the drain plug dropped out of the oil Pan on my bike about 250 metres after I got off the 401 on the way to work. I didn't actually realize that something was wrong until a guy behind me started honking at me.

I look down realize i'm smoking like mad and pull right over on shepard at yonge. I stop and sploosh BIG puddle of oil. I get off (engine off before i even pulled over) look under bike and no drain plug.

And as stated earlier LOTS and LOTS of oil. Well about 2 litres i'd think. looked like a lake to me but the bike only holds 3 .5L so what with the 350m trail of oil down yonge street i figure 2L was left.

After standing there in shock for a couple minutes I follow the trail of oil down yonge and find my missing drain plug.

Yes sounds impossible but there is was.

So what was the massive fuckup?

I had to replace my original oil pan because i had stripped the threads for the drain plug two years ago and being a bit of a pinch i had to use a less than perfect solution ( oversized self tapping drain bolt) to get it running again. ( In a pinch due to the bike being a freinds for the winter and said friend having to move unexpectedly for work. thereby having to kick me out of her garage .) the solution did actually work great with no leaks until the second oil change I did. That was at the end of 2014 , last year i struggled with persistent small leaks from the drain plug. This spring it was worse and the oversize bolt started getting loose so I obtained a replacement oil pan. I replaced it on Friday the 13th at my sisters . I went there because A. i don't have a garage at the moment B. my Brother in law is a long time rider and tinkerer of motorcycles ( he's building two cafe racer type bikes at the moment) has a great garage and 94% of all the tools you could ever want.

The install went amazingly well with no real issues and afterwards I had time to Bleed my brakes and finally ( after 8 years) get my headlight to actually headlight.

At least i thought so anyway. One problem with going to my brother in laws is that we talk. A lot. About bikes 90% of the time but other stuff comes up. But bikes is our most frequent subject. And we generally like similar kinds of bikes so that's great. ( No Harley/Clone fans in the garage). But talk we do and as i have the attention span of a gnat....

Somehow i missed getting the drain plug torqued down properly. So for two weeks it's been slowly working it's way out.

Where it came out was a massive bit of luck for me. One minute earlier and would have been going about 80 km/h and leaned over in the tunnel under the 401 getting off the 401 east going to yonge North. Just before that of course I was on the 401 going over the very high bridge over the Don Valley Golf course.

Never mind where I was over the last couple of weeks.

Scary . I had a bad day yesterday beating myself up among other things for being so stupid.

Today I'm a little less freaked out but still aware how big a bullet I managed to dodge. I will be going back to paper checklists for every single thing i do from now on. Lists in my head are obviously NOT working, the sieve in my head is apparently not fine enough to catch my mistakes.

So go hug the Wife ,Husband, GF,BF , family , your Dog ,Cat, Hamster or Walrus and remember you don't know when the universe might be ready to say bye.

On a side note yesterday would have been my Dad's 114th birthday

@Irv: was at an Occupational Health nurses symposium at the Banff Park lodge Wednesday Thursday, you are living in heaven my friend! If I woke up to this scenery everyday, I don't think I would accomplish much, as I would want to go hiking etc. There were a number of young Aussie kids working there, and they all said they came for the snow, but haven't been disappointed with the spring either.
@ James, I have had the same situation when working with friends on my vehicles or theirs, we get totally distracted chatting and inevitably something gets missed, lucky you weren't taking a turn with oil soaking your rear tire.

May 27, 2016 @ 3:09 PM

It's not the issue that gets me (I don't care one way or the other but I might if I needed pain relief) it's calling it Project Claudia which sounds like taking down Mussolini's mountaintop retreat or something and then showing all that cellophane wrapped stuff like a Japanese pop group video.
Quite a juxtaposition.

May 27, 2016 @ 3:21 PM

Or maybe it's called Project Claudia because somebody has a sense of humour. I don't know.

May 27, 2016 @ 3:24 PM

Hurricane Claudia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tropical Storm Claudia (1973), made landfall approximately 30 mi (50 km) east of Acapulco; no deaths or casualties were reported; Hurricane Claudia (1977), did not ...

@ The Voice of Reason
Great analogy by the way.
So to create a metaphor: A dealer is a dispensary.
Or a simile: A dealer is like a dispensary.

Or even a reverse analogy is possible. But I'm not sure what that would be.

May 27, 2016 @ 3:42 PM

@Rick C

Yeah, I saw you post the pic looking out the window over at Melissa's Missteak (restaurant) & Tunnel Mountain across the road. When I moved there last year I stayed in the hotel for a month. I drive by there frequently going to Nester's Market, a grocery store, and going to the post office (we do not have any mail delivery). My place is about 500 meters from that hotel.

The view never gets old and you spend a lot of time outdoors because there is so much to do. I was telling Mike there is a great bike trail between Canmore & Banff called the Legacy trail. If you're adventurous you can take the 1A all the way out to Lake Louise. You get the outdoors, a compact town that's completely walk-able and dozens of great restaurants, a distillery and 2 local breweries. And a train horn every hour ;-)

Lots of Aussies & Kiwi's working there & yeah they come to snowboard. The snow came early this year so it was good for skiing but it was warmer than normal by March. As far as I know last weekend was the final week for Sunshine Village (ski hill about 10 km away).

I'm gonna get brutalized, but am I the only one that wishes the Tragically Hip team handled Downie's illness more like David Bowie's people did his? Giving CBC the exclusive 5 months after diagnosis), coincidentally announcing a tour the same day (tickets on sale soon!), it's part tragedy, part blatant and cynical cash-grab.

May 27, 2016 @ 4:42 PM

@Rob J

I think that's a fair statement. It does come across as opportunist and well planned as a means to capitalize on his illness. I'll take it even further and say I don't think Gord Downie was a Canadian icon so much as he was a musical icon to a specific generation (Gen X). It's like what Gordon Lightfoot is to Baby Boomers

And the whole FM radio sob fest was over done too. Let's not forget that FM radio was reticent to play the band & I don't think CFNY even played Smalltown Bringdown (their first real single).'s likely the only reason the Hip got airplay initially was Cancon rules.

I personally think that FM radio destroyed the Hip. They played the same 6-8 songs in regular rotation for 20+ years. They could have dug into the rest of the record but they didn't. Gord Downie has had some pretty solid music of late but you don't hear it on traditional radio. It's too bad because, without question, he's a talented & gifted writer and performer.

May 27, 2016 @ 5:07 PM

I saw something interesting on the way home.
5:30ish - 401w between 400 and 427 cut off. Motorcade of 2 black police SUVs, lights and sirens, then a large black armoured truck - no logos, nothing, followed by a reddish/black police SUV and then finally another black police SUV.
they took the 427 cut off, which is also my cut off, but then I kinda lost them, I think they headed toward downtown along the gardiner.
hivemind have any clue what this is? not a dignitary - since it was an armoured truck and not a limo.

May 27, 2016 @ 6:31 PM

World Hockey Rosters.

Other than Carey Price (injured) but selected is THE ONLY player from an NHL Canadian Team to be selected to play for Team Canada in the World Cup of Hockey Championship in Toronto in September this year.

Phil the Thrill was snubbed, but JVR from the Leafs was selected instead. No Corey Perry or PK selected to Cda.

Leafs have at least 4 players playing in this tournament playing on other teams & if you count Austin #5. Opinion is that NHL is promoting this as opposed to next Winter Olympics.

May 27, 2016 @ 7:23 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The NHL and NHLPA own this World Cup, so both owners and players will make a lot of money from it.

They don't own the Olympics, so it's really a no-brainer for them to reserve best-on-best for the World Cup and cash in.

My first thought was transportation of a terrorist or other organized criminal (read extremely dangerous). The escort front/back would be there to stop someone from attempting a high risk attack & get away. Were the police cars marked?

May 27, 2016 @ 9:37 PM

Maybe the Tragically Hip went public so their fans would have a chance to say goodbye.

May 27, 2016 @ 10:29 PM

yes all vehicles (except armoured truck) marked with Toronto Police logo.
possibly a person transfer - but in an armoured truck? - it looked similar to a brinks - but tons more armour - super heavy duty.
I thought it was odd too that they would do it (whatever 'it' is) during rush hour.
enquiring minds need to know!

How about those Cavs. They won. This is awesome. I'm going to win the pool because Cavs are going to win. Bill is out as his Raptors lost. Anyway, awesome win. My Orioles also won last night. That's wonderful. mark Trumbo hits his 15th home run. He is so awesome. My Diamondbacks lost though. That is not a good thing. Brandon Drury and Jake Lam homered, but they lost big. Anyway, two out of three ain't bad. Cavs are winning the finals. Yes, they are. I'm winning the pool.

May 28, 2016 @ 6:16 AM

But if you want to read something hilarious just read some artist statments on the wall next to the work.
Or to go a step further read The Painted Word by Tom Wolfe about when and how 'artist statements' became MANDATORY. :-)

May 28, 2016 @ 8:13 AM

@GUNTer: Maybe Dell Millard being transported? He's still on trial, no?

@TM: I don't think Rob J didn't want Downie to say goodbye. I think it's how it was handled. It does come across as a bit scripted. And that's never really been the MO of the Downie. He always came across as an honest, genuine, guy. He makes a fair point and I don't think it's offensive.

May 28, 2016 @ 1:35 PM

My Orioles lost again. That's no good, but they lost. They better win today. My Diamondbacks won though. Zach Grienke is coming along. He was losing, but now he is winning games which is great. Paul Goldschmidt hit another home run which is good to see as he is not having as good of a year as before. Looks like the western conference NBA final is going to a game 7. Oh well, who cares. I want the finals so the Cavs can win it all and I get my money. That's what will happen. I learned that the other guys still in the pool are not even in the building, they work for Mike. I don't want them to get the money. I want the money and I really really think the Cavs can go on and do it. Let's go Cavs. Now they are resting.

Yes, the presale was at 10am today. Hip Club members got a password mailed to us.

I was logged in to TM at 9:50am and jumped on it at 10am and came up empty. I really wanted to score tickets for my oldest two kids so they could see daddy's favourite band.

May 30, 2016 @ 10:18 AM

Well, my Orioles won yesterday. Great game. A new rooky player from Korea named Hyun Su Kim hit a home run, his first and Nolan Reimold hit a home run as well. That's great. My Diamondbacks also won the second in a row. They have to keep it going. Anyway, Cavs are the 2016 champions. I would have picked them even if Mike didn't drop out of the pool and I had no chance of winning my money. Anyway, I didn't like Lebron before. I changed my mind about him now. He's good. Cavs are great. They're winning the finals. I am winning my money.

Anyway, what stupid name is Golden State anyway? There is no state called Golden State. Anyway, they're going to lose because my Cavs are going to win because the Cavs are the best. I always get the flu vaccine every year. It's nice that pharmacies do them now. Ever since I started getting them, I never had the flu so that's a good thing. My Orioles stunk again last night. Another awful game. First pitch and they give up a home run just like that. My Diamondbacks also lost. That's no good either. NBA finals don't start until tomorrow. Cavs are going to win. Yes, they are going to do it. I want my money and the Cavs are going to really pour it on. I can't wait until I win my money.
