November 2015 Bell Media Cuts

We're learning now who has been cut as part of Bell Media's restructuring. The vast majority of those let go were behind the scenes, but I'm going to focus on those in front of the microphone and/or camera, known to those tuning in from Toronto.

I'll update this entry as I learn more.

Did all of those ace CP24 new readers escape being let go?

How many are CITY TV peeps, or has CTV/Bell fully genocided the old guard there?

I'm stunned Joshi was let go. He's been with CTV/CFTO forever.

Did anyone get let go at HTZ?

November 17, 2015 @ 10:18 PM

I don't know of any on-air dismissals at HTZ.

Sadly, they were probably trimming the payroll. No doubt being a long time employee(and being well paid) in these organizations puts you on the radar. What Bell forgets is these faces were familiar to their audience, and the reason people watched.
Will miss Mike Toth as I heard his sports banter everyday on Newstalk, and about his kids playing sports etc..

November 17, 2015 @ 11:33 PM

How do these cuts make the product better, exactly?

November 18, 2015 @ 9:59 AM

Daniel

Really the only reason I stayed on Richards was because I thought Bastl was smart, good natured and funny. and even then I didn't listen to it for more than 5 minutes at a time. I think I'm officially done with sports radio in the morning until they replace the current hosts.

The Bell Media cuts illustrate what a cruel business it is, where being professional and a solid team citizen is not enough when you have built so much tenure, that you are considered a liability, even though you have been a fixture for decades with listeners/viewers who feel like you are an extended part of their family.

When networks make cuts like this strictly for ROI it demeans the brand. I am all for giving new talent a chance to develop, but there is no reason why that can't be done without throwing out to pasteur your existing talent who have helped put you on the map in the first place.

The one that surprisingly really upset me was Bill Hutchison, who is as professional as it gets and delivers a tight, well put together late night newscast, and since he is considered in the "B" category, versus the lucky ones in the "A" category who can call their own shots, he was let go.

I am going to protest, meaning not watching 11:30 p.m. CTV newscasts anymore on principle. They still have on air talent at CFTO doing the news who can't even put a sentence together and read a teleprompter properly, but that obviously was not a factor, tenure and salary was.

November 18, 2015 @ 10:40 AM

Rob

Any time I watched the late CTV sportscast from Toronto, I was surprised at the lack of on-air presence or personality exhibited by Joshi. There was minimal interaction with the co-workers during the intro/extro and hardly a smile would cross his face. While I don't wish anyone to lose their job, I can't say a review of performance "on air" would not lead to this change.

November 18, 2015 @ 10:57 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The only on-air change I'm aware of at CP24 is the retirement of Ann Rohmer: http://www.torontomike.com/2015/11/ann_rohmer_retires_from_cp24.html

November 18, 2015 @ 11:04 AM

Gary

It really irks me when I see big companies making tons of money and yet they still cut staff. If there was a performance issue, that is different. If it was for cost cutting, it just doesn't make sense.

Unless I am totally misunderstanding the latest quarterly report for BCE; revenues are up and so is profit among many other items. So why the layoffs??

http://www.bce.ca/investors/financial-reporting/2015-Q3/2015-q3-press-release.pdf

November 18, 2015 @ 11:16 AM

Ben

@ Gary and others: This has everything to do with shareholders and capital funds. Shareholders don't give a @#$@ about the human casualties on their way to dividends.

I work in the CPG industry and every company in Canada is shitting their pants about 3G Capital (Braziliian company that bought Kraft and Heinz) coming in to buy them out. 3G has a mantra of "you are lucky to have a job" and cut costs no matter what.

This is the world we live in unfortunately. These entities don't care about anything but low costs and high profits.

Next time you are in Timmy's try and figure out where their chicken comes from on their sandwiches or their bacon. They kicked out all the vendors that used to be Canadian and made them bid on business they always had. They of course went with the lowest cost providers. You know the guys that will mix chicken meat from Brazil, Canada, the US and south America in order to make sliced chicken.......

This situation with Bell is no different, look who owns BCE and what their expectations are from a profit standpoint.

I'm old enough to remember when when Bell was a damn fine phone company with very high customer satisfaction. Today I don't know one happy Bell customer. Not one. Now they\re not only a lousy phone company, but they're a lousy broadcasting company. (And if I hear that CTV promo guy ONE MORE TIME I'm gonna shoot my TV!!)

I was listening to TSN radio this morning while driving to work with Mike Richards. He was taking phone calls from listeners & a couple of times he said "hopefully this isn't David Bastl calling in", talking about his FORMER co host let go yesterday.
I lost a lot of respect for Richards today, he should have been the one let go, but I'm sure when he started he had a contract for so many years.

@dale

Richards pulls numbers. You pull numbers and your still in line with the company's image; you're good. His job (and any talk-show hosts' job) is to get the numbers. Bigger numbers means you can charge more for advertising.

You don't make on-air decisions based on whether your audience "likes" a host or not. Perfect example is Rush Limbaugh. Most people hate him- but they LOVE to hate him- which is why they listen.

November 19, 2015 @ 8:36 AM

Rick C in Oakville

Doesn't matter what industry you are in today. I have seen the industry I am in start out with innovative small companies 20 years ago, they eventually were bought up by 2 or 3 corporations. The products they put out now are higher cost, and poorer quality. They have also out sourced their manufacturing, lowest bidder usually means lower quality.

Yes, and Robert Fife is leaving CTV for a gig at the Globe and Mail.

November 19, 2015 @ 2:10 PM

Brian Gerstein

Wow, the news is flying fast and furious. With Ashely Rowe moving on, who often filled in of late on the late CTV news, as well as 6:00 p.m., this leaves CFTO with an even bigger hole to fill, with Bill Hutchison let go. Turning into a PR nightmare for CFTO now, as what is left is unwatchable, and I won't be watching myself.

Robert Fife was played up ad nauseam as being the Insider that all politicians talk to on those tv spots as he they trust him and he never reveals his sources. So much for that. Huge opportunity for CFTO's competitors to steal some market share.

November 19, 2015 @ 2:15 PM

Dana P.

Really disappointed to hear of the layoffs, especially since it wound up being an article on cbc.ca as opposed to something straight up from ctv or cfrb. Going to particularly miss Bill Hutchison at CFTO and Mike Toth at CFRB. Hope all in front and behind the mics affected find new and better opportunities.

November 19, 2015 @ 4:03 PM

Brian Gerstein

Just realized Bell owns the Globe and Mail so Fife is just moving within the same company.

November 19, 2015 @ 5:46 PM

@Brian Gerstein

I remember asking James Mirtle about this, and he said Bell only owns 20% of the Globe and Mail.

November 19, 2015 @ 5:58 PM

Mookie

@Mike et al.

BCE sold their remaining shares in the Globe to Woodbridge (Thompson family) back in Aug.

As for the Bell cuts, very sorry to see so many lose their jobs again. Bell Media does this at lease pt every year. I have many friends that work there, and I understand the environment is terrible. Eventually you likely price yourself right out of the company. Or you get sick of the negative environment and leave first.

Those losing their jobs who are not on air are never replaced. Those who remain are just burdened with more work, without acknowledgement of any kind.

Sad news for those affected, and those who stay behind.

KK is Kristy Knight. Here's her bio, saved for posterity.

If you were to describe your life with one word...what would it be?

Mine would be: Entertainment

I grew up in a bar. That explains a lot.

My father was a legendary bad ass bar manager in the 60’s and 70’s.

I would go to the bar after school and my after school snack would be a Shirley Temple and a bag of pork rinds.

On weekend nights I would go to the bar with my parents (My mom did the books).

Because my father’s bar was attached to a dining room I was legally able to sit and watch the bands with my Coke or Shirley Temple.

I saw Max Webster, Goddo, Teenage Head, Honeymoon Suite, Platinum Blonde and a ton of bands when they were in their earliest days. Larry Gowan used to be in a cover band called Reingold.

I saw Jerry Lewis’s son Gary, The Platters, Ronnie Hawkins and Lisa Hartman. Remember her from Knot’s Landing? Yeah..she used to sing in a band. I watched one night as my father yelled at her and made her cry because no one showed up to see her. (Told you my dad was bad ass. He made a pretty girl cry)

I wish you could have seen Kim Mitchell’s face when I first interviewed him in 1986 and told him I was that little kid who used to be asleep in the office as he got paid at that bar in Owen Sound!

One night, The Platters came up to the office to get paid. My dad introduced me to them and I told them I knew their song “The Great Pretender”. They sang it for me acapella as my father danced with me. I was 10.

It comes as no surprise that I started to play guitar. I started my first band when I was 14.

A year later I got the gig as the lead guitar player in a local country band. Man..did I make money!

I got to know the band’s sound guy. We started doing jobs together. (More money)

Then we started a DJ service. So, if I wasn’t making money on the weekend with the band or doing a sound job, I was getting paid to DJ a wedding or high school dance.

I remember my father being upset because I had more money to spend than he did! Hahhaa!

I still don’t know how I managed to graduate high school with honours...but I did!

Then one day......life changed forever...in a split second.

On November 11th 1979, we were doing a sound job for the local radio station for their Remembrance Day broadcast. Afterwards, the radio station boss asked me if I wanted a job. He took me to the station, gave me a tour and offered me my first radio gig. I was hell bent on being a rock star....but hey, they were gonna pay me...so “Sure..I’ll work for you guys”.

And it began....

CFOS AM Owen Sound:1979-1985

CHNR AM Simcoe: 1985-1985 (That gig last 3 months...cuz I got a job offer)

CFTJ AM Cambridge: 1985-1985 (That gig lasted two weeks due to the Barry Manilow overload)

Q107 Toronto: 1985-1988

97.7 HTZ FM: 1988-1999

Loggerhead Records/ Universal Group: 1999-2002

97.7 HTZ FM: 2002-Present

Awards on the wall

Wtf is wrong with this world when a company that makes billions of dollars of profit finds it necessary to upend the lives its employees and their families. Its these fucking assholes running major corporations like BCE and Rogers who only care about one thing..almighty profit and their millions in compensation.

November 20, 2015 @ 8:49 PM

Hans

Marco - the problem is it's not about the people. employees or even customers which corporation as big as bell. In the end it comes down to what the shareholders want whom only care about ROI, their dividends and keep the stock price up.

Sadly, "Greed is good" is the motto of all the companies these days.

KK is the best DJ ever! Where is she? Bell Media is stupid AGAIN ... let her go!!!!!!!!!!!!! They just lost another listener!

for many years I listened to HTZ(pretty much since day 1)... but in the last few I just listened to "KK Radio". I guess for now I will just leave the satellite radio on in my truck... Hopefully KK will resurface somewhere locally, or maybe even on an online platform. I will certainly listen!! Keep us posted, I will be watching

KK was the best at HTZ and she became the only reason to listen in the last few years. I am furious at Bell for this. I will never listen to HTZ again. I already got my internet from another provider and I am actively investigating cutting the Bell cord forever. Why would anyone be loyal to them when they clearly don't know the meaning of the word?
Their customer service means five calls or more with long wait times in order to get their mistakes cleared up. I have been cut off three times in their internal phone system - that's right - the famous phone company can't transfer a call any more inside their own office without losing the connection.

November 26, 2015 @ 8:28 AM

Man, I am furious over the hatchet job that B-Hell did! KK was the rock at HTZ, pardon the pun. She had edge, personality, humility, love of humanity, and wonderfully wicked sense of humour. Whenever I was out of work, I'd have the radio on just so the day didn't suck as much ass as it could have. KK made my fucking day more often than not. Piss off Bell!

Very disappointing news, such professionals pushed to the curb. Dan Matheson? Are you kidding me? Such nonsense. Surely, he'll resurface again soon. Landsberg's show at TSN? Wow. I remembered growing up with Suneel Joshi in Toronto media when I was with Canadian Press, and then the Blue Jays' front office, in the mid'80s. Tough road ahead for him - and others. It's a simple Math problem, less salaries, more profits. The changing landscape of television and the fact that consumers will have more say in TV viewing with the new rules in January likely contributed to this. I suspect this is the first shoe to drop, too. Watch for similar purges at Rogers/Shaw, etc.

Add Andrea Perone to the list from TSN 1050. I've heard Matthew Cauz mention Bob Mackowycz a couple times recently, so I'll assume he's still an employee.

I'm just sickened to hear the news about KK at HTZ-FM. What a loss! She was the main reason I listened to HTZ-FM. I hope she winds up somewhere close, I miss her sense of humour, her understated intelligence, and her outlook on life. So many times, she made my day just by making me laugh. I can't thank her enough, and due to the suddenness of her dismissal, it seems I can't thank her at all.

Wouldn't it be ironic if she wound up at Y108. Good question! (Anyone who listened to KK knows exactly what I mean.) She's absolutely hilarious!

If she is reading this, or if anyone can pass it on for me... thanks KK! Love ya, girl! Best DJ I've heard in years.

Shocked to hear KK is gone. What a stupid move on the station's part. She was the main reason I listened to 97.7. They are going to lose a lot of listeners. Everyone I know that listened has stopped. She is the best in the business. I used to listen online every day in the States. She's the one that got me hooked on this station. I hope she finds something locally. She is really going to be missed. KK loved her job and entertaining us and you could feel that every day when you put her show on. She never had a boring show and always gave her best.

Still cant believe KK got let go by HTZ. I dont listen too it anymore, she was all that was left after Iron Mike passed. I remember a Christmas a few years ago KK talked about eating the last piece of a Christmas cake she had made with her mother. I had to pull over my eyes were so teared up as it reminded me of times helping my grandmother make Christmas cake every year as a kid. I heard she might get a spot on Giant FM. So happy KK is back on the radio. I left 977 after she was let go, with Iron Mike (RIP) gone, and then her, there was no reason to keep listening, it just was not the same!. I started listening to 91.7 and then the other night I heard a familiar voice, OMG I said to my husband listen "it's KK" so happy to hear her again. 91.7 your a keeper ROCK ON!

kk wasn't fired for management restructuring - she was fired for using her public position to assist in criminal acts not only against myself but other in the entertainment industry who refuse to bow and kiss her ass. the fact of the matter she insists on going around telling people i have horns and a tail is just scratching the surface

I have enjoyed KK on the radio throughout my working years - her brief absence due to 97.7s poor decision making was keenly felt - SO glad she is back on GiantFM :)

As to comments about her being nasty in the workplace - I ask this .... how does someone hold a job in an extremely social business for close to 30 years being mean or nasty? ..... she can't be that bad - she MUST be great!!

I have heard she was the victim of an abusive spouse. The above comments seem suspicious...

I was a HTZ listener since being a teenager and have always enjoyed KK. She made listening fun and informative.

She is a great loss to HTZ FM and I am not sure they will survive for long without her on their station. I have also met people that have worked with her and they had nothing but praise and LOVE for her
.
I am sure that most HTZ FM listeners will quickly become GIANT listeners.

Kristy Knight is and always will be one of the best female radio personalities Canada has ever produced; her talents transcended the limitations of the corporate programmers she's had to endure over the years. She reflects passion for the music and a genuine love for her listeners. As the foundations of the once great HTZ-FM start to fall away, so to does the wide influence it once had with listeners and the industry. Kristy's departure left a big hole....

April 6, 2016 @ 9:59 AM

JR

KK is the very fabric of what HTZ was. She connects with the listener as tho they are one of her Buddies. Her banter and way of relating to the listener is a lost art in Radio these days.

I have been a listener since the Q days and was lucky enough to have worked with her in late 90's

I remember being nervous to meet her the first time, she was a F**king Rock Star! And she lived up to that mystic. Not in a Dave Mustaine kinda way but more like a Lemmy kinda way. Everything is face value with her. She didn't Bullshit or Sugar Coat things, but she also didn't make anyone feel as tho they were beneath her either. Her radio persona is who she is “One of the Listeners... a Music Fan” she see's the world in her way and has a damn funny way of Entertaining us with her feedback.

KK has been, by far one of the handful of “Stand Up” people that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. What ever the circumstances or her leaving the station its apparent that she earned every bit of support shown on this blog. Giant is a better station for having her and HTZ-FM's Loss!

April 6, 2016 @ 7:52 PM

Rocky

Kristy is a giant talent, so landing on the GIANT is a great score for Niagara's classic rock station. No one knows music like Kristy -- and the suck-ass whiner on this thread who claimed to work with her at HTZ-FM is either a liar or a puss that couldn't take working in a rock environment. Talented people have their eccentricities, and anyone who REALLY worked with Kristy had fun working along side her. So don't buy the B.S. of the haters.....just enjoy Kristy on GIANT FM. The music's better there anyway...

On June 15 2015 @aprox 10:30 kk received a call from one of her associates who spotted me travelling to mississauga. kk then proceded to go on the air and make claim that according to the international pole dancing assoc. all the strip joints were closed and that I should turn my ass around and go back to my dog house. She then proceded to make several calls to others having them looking for me (bell media-bell mobility- duh? Gps, phone records,). I only made one phone call to Bell via RCMP. Can anyone say cash reward for slashing my tires? She did, and has said that on many occasions. In 2007 she called my then gf (now wife) a gold digging whore. In 1988 @ Iron Maiden concert I was approached by axel and slash (who were opening) and I'm not going to repeat what was said other than to say that when that drum throne became available I was turned down only due to false and slanderous comments leveled at me from her mouth. In '86 or '87 she spit on Kylie Minogue calling her a slut for talking to me like a human being
And I dare anyone to tell me what I could have done to her. I'm not a hater, I don't cheat on my wife, I'm not a pedofile, I don't steal (and I've never shortchanged band mates) I'm a human being and deserve to be treated with respect just like anyone else. I could go on...

It has been great being able to listen to KK Radio again when I can.

Thank you to all who posted previously, since I am not on twitter(yeah, yeah I know), I would not have known where she was.

ROCK ON KK !!!

April 14, 2016 @ 7:53 PM

Kristy Knight is the by far one of the best DJs ever to surface on Rock Radio in Canada Nation-Wide, North American Wide for that matter. She's entertaining, on-the-fly and can handle anything that comes her way. In the earlier days of Q107, they were the greatest station and had the greatest roster of DJs from across the land, and KK was one of them. 97.7 hired her during their start, because she was a top notch DJ and would ensure them success. Like a great rock band, she has stood the test of time, and that cannot be taken away from her. Whoever said Bell didn't know how to screw people, they do it monthly.

Please do that for the safety of our community.

You mention events that I have never been part of. Good luck.

To the rest of you...

Thank you for your kindness and support.

It has been both heartwarming and overwhelming.

I am now loving the drive show with Jef Brown on 91.7 Giant FM.

I am the happiest I have been since I lost my dear friend Iron Mike Bensson.

Life changes and we all must move on.

I am in a good place.....and I wouldn't be without such amazing support from the hearts of friends I haven't even met.

Thank you.

Let's have some fun.

@KK: Miss hearing you on HTZ. Not so much into the classic rock but I'll check it out anyway. Glad you landed on your feet and glad to hear you're happy.

Kristy, was that a different Jef Brown than the one that was on AM 96? I worked with Jeff Brown there in 1991, but that was well after you left Cambridge. Just curious.

I recall listening to you alongside Sue Johanssen on Q107 Sunday Nights. That was a hoot. Thanks for some great radio.

Yes Jody! Same Jef Brown! We just realized recently that we worked together in Cambridge back in 88! I was only there for 2 weeks and then I went to Q...so we never met. I did evenings..he did midday! Freakin crazy! :)

We are having soooo much fun! Awesome when you find on-air chemistry!

Thank you for being a "radio head"!

Kristy Knight...you are an awesome DJ! I hope that you can squeeze some metal into Giant FM's playlist!!! With the anger on the roads these days...should be kinda easy, eh! I have loved your voice and attitude for years.....keep on rockin!
