@ TorontoMike: What was the brand of wireless ear phones you purchased? I bought some myself last week, after an incident involving a leaf blower and the cord getting sucked into the chamber producing the blowing wind and ripping them to shreds.

I wasn't sure what to think about buying a pair, but I must say they have made working out at the gym, take my dogs for a walk, biking and pretty much anything else I used to do with earphones with a cord in easier. It's at the point I forget I have them in now.

Have you found any drawbacks to them yet?

I still love them and use them daily. Here's my write up about the best headphones I've ever owned: http://www.torontomike.com/2015/07/the_best_headphones_ive_ever_owned.html

They are Plantronics BackBeat FIT wireless stereo headphones.

The only drawback is that when I'm biking against wind, the wind hits the microphone and I often can't be heard. But I still dig 'em the most.

I was in Yorkville for work yesterday. I'm always fascinated with that weird veneer you get from the place. Every thing and every one is pristine. As I was walking in the Four Seasons, the guy who opened the door for me was wearing a $1500 suit. The female guests within were all, and I mean all..unbelievably hot and immaculately dressed. Male guests wore strange short dress pants the rest of us might call floods, with multicoloured socks. There was 1 guy with high top sneakers that appeared to be made of a material that I have never ever seen before, which tells me something about the circles I run in.

When I finished my business and left the area, it reminded me of the time I was a 15 year old McDonald's employee. Hours after finishing a shift I'd still feel this thin layer of grease all over my body, and friends told me I smelled like a Big Mac.

It's a strange universe over in them parts.

Well, my Orioles or Diamondbacks didn't play last night, but Kean played and they won. That's great 8 to 3. They are doing really well. Yes, I know exactly what I did during 911. I was still going out to work. I was working. Then all day long there was all this talk. I didn't know what was going on or anything. The people in the office didn't like me and talked to me only if they really had to. Well, one person said "Let's leave Cheryl out of this". I knew nothing what was going on until I turned on the radio when I got home and there it was, the World Trade Centre got attacked. Then they talked about baseball being canceled, but I didn't really care and then talked about Barry Bonds and he wouldn't be able to hit a home run. There were players that had names come up everywhere and I got so tired of hearing the name Barry Bonds. Anyway, so I knew nothing about the World Trade Centre being attacked a whole day until I got home and heard about it.

On the topic of family vehicles, mini vans maybe despised, but I had a 2004 Chrysler mini van and I could jam a lot of stuff and people in it. Look for an off lease and save big as they depreciate heavily. My coworker had the same vehicle and bought an extra back row of seats, so instead of the 2-2-3 (7) seating he had 2-3-3 (8) all with seat belts, so your not breaking any safety rules.

I had my best week ever on the treadmill. My week goes from Friday - Thursday. I normally do 45 minutes at a fast walk of 4 - 4.5 miles per hour. I did doubles on Saturday and Monday, never missed a day, and clocked in at 37.953 miles walked and 6,135 calories burned. I know it's not an exact calculation as the machine does not know my weight, age, or gender, but I am very pleased nonetheless. The generic assessment still gives me a good bench mark.

I find it fascinating that even though I listen to music, some workouts fly by and others feel like an eternity. Take today as an example. I have to use a magnifying glass to see the display panel so I tend to guess my progress while I am walking. I thought for sure I was well past the 20 minute stage, grabbed my mag, flicked on the light and read the display. I was at 16 minutes! I still did my 45 minutes, but sheesh!

Well, how about those Orioles. Two grand slams in the eighth inning. Nolan Reimold and also Steve Clevenger. Awesome awesome and Manny Machado a solo shot. Also Dariel Alvarez hit his first homer. Awesome. My Diamondbacks won as well. Lots of hits as well. How about Nick Ahmed hitting for the cycle and a homer by Paul Goldschmidt. Wonderful. Kean also won again. They go to the quarter final at noon. They won a squeaker 5 to 4. That's wonderful. They're going to win this. I can feel it because Team Kean is the best this year. Believe me. They're going to win the Brier.

Question for those who have switched to Windows 10: my data usage has spiked since I converted. Never used more than 30/40%. Now, the last 2 months, since converting to "10", I am hitting the max.

Cogeco support says they have reports that 10 is maxing my data usage in the background. Anyone else familiar with this scenario?

September 12, 2015 @ 12:33 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@fourteen

I've got Windows 10 on my laptop. I noticed stuff in the background, like the weather and news.

Go here and find out exactly which app is eating your bandwidth: http://www.howtogeek.com/224170/how-to-monitor-your-network-usage-in-windows-10/

September 12, 2015 @ 12:35 PM

Mr Robot

@Fourteen

Their are several reasons why you are seeing an increase in bandwidth. The first is because Windows 10 uses YOUR bandwidth. It's called the Windows Update Delivery Optimization. You can read about it here. https://www.hackread.com/windows-10-internet-bandwidth/

Secondly, Windows spies on you and calls home with the data. It's become such an issue that the Canadian Feds are now looking into the privacy issues. https://www.hackread.com/canada-looking-into-windows-10-spying/ Oh, and many of these things you "agreed" to when you installed it. And, you can't go back and change them now (some you can, some you can't)

And, it gets worse. Recently, patches were released for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 to do the same thing. You have to know the KB number of the patch to bypass it. Most people don't.

Anything that is free comes with a cost. In this day and age your personal information is the new currency. Hope that helps

How to fix it?

1. Consider using a Linux distro like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. These distro's are suitable for newbies. Linux Mint with Cinnamon desktop looks much like Windows XP. It's also free, rock solid and patches itself daily. The only limits are you can't run some software on it (MS Office, iTunes).

2. Invest in a Mac. I myself don't trust Apple Corp as far as I can throw them. But if they were feeding out information hacks would have caught it. My biggest concern with Apple is their lack of transparency over patching & vulnerabilities in their software. They release patches occasionally but don't tell you why. I find out from Homeland Security before I find out from Apple. And to me that's a problem.

If you must have Windows you can always run it as a virtual machine. Virtual Box is a free hypervisor and I know VMware Player is free too.

Linux. The choice of the GNU Generation.

Mike & Mr. Robot: Thanks for the info.

Gee, I wonder why those fker's are so reviled?

September 12, 2015 @ 1:21 PM

Mr Robot

@fourteen

Well what MS is doing is relatively new for them, but it's commonplace elsewhere. Many social media sites, etc, collect your personal information & upload to their own servers. Certain Android apps are really bad for it. The Uber App is viewed as malware by security researchers for all the data it collects, most of it not related to Uber at all.

As far as Windows 10 goes, as an OS I actually like it. I think it's well designed & a very good product. I do not like the spying & data mining element. I mean now, even if you don't update the system, your computer is downloading Windows 10. It's YOUR computer. It annoys me as much as Apple putting their stupid Watch app on my iPhone. It's my iPHone and your watch is a freaking failure.

Does anyone here ever use the bike crossing at Strachan and Lakeshore? When was this light put in? The light gives you milliseconds to cross. @Gary

I updated to Windows 10. I quite like it, but I only used Edge once to download Chrome.

September 13, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

Mr Robot

Gary,

In my opinion, Windows 10 is a superior product to Windows 8.1. BUT, most of the innovation is developed for the server/workstation domain environment. It's easier to navigate than Windows 8.1 was

Problems:

- The stuff I mentioned a few posts back regarding spying and it sharing your connection to patch other computers.

- Many anti-virus products took issue with it most notably Kaspersky. I had to completely remove Kaspersky and re-install it again as would not start up

- Sluggish right out of the box. I found both Chrome and Firefox started consuming shit loads of resources. The system also took issue with Flash even when it's updated.

- Of note: Windows 10 patches itself. This is a good thing as systems should be patched. But it's a bad thing in that sometimes patching causes issue. For the non techie type this could cause real issues.

As for the Edge browser, it is what it is. The average user will not use it. Where it will be used is on an internal domain for things like Sharepoint, etc.

The reason 10 was given away by Microsoft is solely for their own benefit. The Windows ecosystem was splintered between 4 different versions of the OS. This is expensive to administrate & even more expensive for developers. By giving away the product the goal is to standardize everyone on Windows 10. There are some 75 million users already so their plan appears to be working.

Why do you politicize everything?

You must admit, it's pretty mind-boggling that they arrested the kid. We should be encouraging his behaviour, not discouraging it.

September 17, 2015 @ 11:41 AM

Argie

I'm not - this is not about politics. Its about social media being dominated by white, middle class weenies who have nothing better to do than to be outraged whenever the supposed "oppressed" is supposedly oppressed. Its every bloody day.

September 17, 2015 @ 11:50 AM

Ben V

@Argie: Not understanding how this is immediately a liberal thing. People on every side of the political spectrum should be in outrage.

Why people are all over this is because first and foremost it was flat out racism. Then ad to the fact the kid was arrested. Then couple it with the whole incident occurring in a state that has a tendency to be emblematic of intolerance.

I guess the main problem here is how stupid the teacher was. Maybe if they weren't worried about teachers being able to teach creationism vs. actual science she would have known it was a clock and not a bomb.

September 17, 2015 @ 12:59 PM

Argie

@Ben
Its not just about this incident. Its almost every freaking day, there is this sheep-like outrage about something, someone really mean did to some poor soul. It just so happens the majority of the outrage comes from the group I described earlier (it appears you would fit into that group).

So yes, I can assume your twitter outrage was at an all-time high the past few days. So go ahead and swear at me and get even more outraged.

September 17, 2015 @ 2:02 PM

Ben

@Argie: I haven't been on twitter in about 4 months and even before that time I didn't tweet regularly.

My outrage was non existent, I laughed at how absolutely sad it is. The states and especially the southern area always trying to convince people they aren't racist and don't have problems. Instead they are like my 75 year old father, who will say something like "I'm not racist, but" which is usually followed by something that is racist or prejudice.

It seems you are more worked up about this than I ever could be.
