Lou Lamoriello Hired as Leafs GM

Brendan Shanahan, President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced today that Lou Lamoriello has been named the 16th General Manager in the Club’s history. Lamoriello joins the Leafs after previously spending the last 28 years in the New Jersey Devils organization.

I didn't see this coming, did you?

whether or not this works out, you have to give full props to Shanny for bold moves & truly trying to bring different views & different experiences to the table. will all the big egos work & continue to buy-in to the new vision will certainly be interesting. given lou's age, i'm pretty sure a lot of this is to teach\mentor dubas as GM-in-training on "all the things to consider" when running a hockey team.

on the flip side, i'll admit that i love fire-wagon hockey which certainly isn't lou's forte. i know, i know that fire-wagon hockey rarely works long term but damn, it's so fun to watch when it's firing on all cylinders.

regardless .. Go Leafs Go ..

cheers from Toronto ..

If a team like Nashville had hired Lou, the Leaf fans-media would be having a big old laugh. Shanahan's a brilliant salesman and his water is being carried by a willing media, in that anything he does no matter how odd, will be universally accepted as part of the 'plan' even though so far some of its elements contrast with other parts. The best example is that instead of tearing down the core, he seems to be doubling down on Phaneuf, Bernier, Lupul, Kadri, etc. Now an elderly man is brought in during a time of 'a long painful rebuild'. Plus it takes wind out of the sails of Hunter and Dubas.

The real story is all the EXPERTS with inside information at TSN,sportsnet,Star,Sun who claim to be Insiders had reported NOTHING at all on this.
Hummm....maybe passing yourself off as a expert/insider just means you go inside in the summer when the sun is out !!!

Does it really matter? They still will suck.

Was Scotty Bowman considered? He's available.
Lou will be a puppet for his buddy Shanny for 1 or 2 years & then to retirement home.
WHY?????????????????????

Hunter would have been my choice with Dubas as Asst. GM.

@andrew

Why do you think Scotty Bowman was available?

He's as happy as a pig in shit working with his son in Chicago.

If they signed Lou and there was no Babcock, Dubas, Hunter or Shanahan - I'd be worried. But I think it'll add a nice balance of experience as he has relationships throughout the league the others don't yet. It's another quality hire and adds all sorts of credibility.

Today at 10:00am - the complaint was that the Leafs management team is too inexperienced, a bunch of newbies that got taken on the Kessel trade and have no credibility with the other GMs around the league.

At 10:35am after the announcement of Lou - the talk is they hired a dinosaur and that the patience and rebuild that was the talk is off now.

Typical for Toronto. :)

Go Leafs Go!

Shanahan is a clown just like when he started that tour when the NHL went on strike that year. He got all his big name, big paying buddies like Gretzky, Messier, Hull, etc. to play exhibition games. He left the grinders out in the cold.

Seems like he is doing the same thing here. He is hiring all big name people. His ego is massive but seems like TO is giving him a free pass.

Too many small guys on the team.

I hope he can score and play centre.
