How bout them Leafs :)
I turned the tv to see they were winning 2-0 going into the third and I thought good for them..
then I turned back later and it was 3-3 and a loss in overtime..and so I thought I'd be good if they won..but if your going to let the team come back at least loose in regulation..you don't need that one freaking point..

sort of side not, the 4 on 4 overtime was pretty exciting..and JT winner was spectacular. Since coming into the league he as the most poinst by a visitor in the ACC

Yeah, I think the Leafs score was 3-1 when I went for my workout. I laughed when I came back and checked the final score online.

It will be a gorgeous set of days coming to the prairies. This winter was nowhere near as perishing as last winter but I am still at the point where I am bummed out. I'm sure we'll get blasted one more time at least, but bring on spring & summer, baby!!!

Interesting article re: Leafs rating.

Essentially yet not surprisingly, the numbers are down around the 750,000 viewers on Saturday night. Typically the Leafs draw closer to 1 million, more during the playoffs. By contrast, the semi finals of the Brier outdrew the leafs by about 100k.

So this makes me think of the rebuild, and the pressure that BS and team will face. The ownership who have a stake in both the team and ad revenue will soon start to apply pressure in my opinion if viewership continues to drop. I don't believe just dropping another canadian team in the Leafs place on a Saturday schedule will suffice.

Also, there's been talk that the NHL has plans to have the Winter Classic in Toronto for the 100 year anniversary of the team in 2017. Again, I don't believe the league will be to happy to have a half ass team in the midst of a rebuild as a participant in a showcase event like the WC.

Can't imagine the pressure the front office will be under and I don't believe that overall the rebuild will be allowed to continue beyond a year.

Just my thoughts.

What's worse? An NHL lockout or this?

I have complete disinterest in my hockey team. If I have nothing else going on, I might flip over and watch two minutes or so, but no more than that. The most interest in the Leafs I've had this past month was when I learned on Twitter Florida might be out of goalies. I tuned in to see if they'd play a player or coach in net.

I can't wait for this season to end.

@ Ryan G you should see the backyard of the person beside my Mom's house! They have two huge dogs? Don't think they have picked anything up all winter......and it's getting worse. There should be a law!

I finally got around to watching Selma and it was an excellent movie. Well-acted, well-directed, well-cast. Cracked my top ten for 2014:

Also, I forget who posted this, but someone recommended that @Argie try a program called Popcorn Time for TV shows and movies. I installed it on that recommendation and I LOVE IT! It's what we all wish Netflix would be like here in Canada. So whoever posted the recommendation, thank you!

I'm sure veterans who lost limbs must love knowing this or the fact they have to prove every three years they still have a limb missing...

@ Ryan G: That's what my patio looks like currently. Except I don't smoke so replace the butts with dog crap.

I do however have a problem with my neighbour and her cigarette butts. I live in a town house and I share a front porch area with her. She sits out and smokes 50% of the day when she is home from work, but A never finishes her cigarettes and B drops them and lets the wind push them into my porch area. She also smokes quite bit of the refer too and those roaches also swing over to my side. Outside of my distaste for smoking, this becomes frustrating because I'm single and currently dating and there are times when I may be lucky enough to bring home a lady. When I do, immediately her eyes shoot to the remnants of my neighbours habit. I then have to explain I don't smoke either product and often times it kills the mood.

What's your advice other than cannibalism?

March 10, 2015 @ 9:58 AM

Ben V

@ Al: That was me who suggested popcorn time. I'm glad you liked it.

It's my go to for everything now and has yet to let me down.

I also watched Selma and can't say enough good things about it. It's moved into my top 10 as well.

March 10, 2015 @ 10:00 AM

I agree. I cant remember a season where my interest in the Leafs was this low. Even during the crappy Burke years at least they would wait until there were 5 or so games left in the season to quit. This team quit back in early January - half way through the effing season. Soon after the fans (me included) quit.

As for the dropping TV numbers, no surprise there. This season, the Leafs aren't always playing on Saturday night and despite being a crappy team, it still out draws the other Cdn team by a lot. Looks good on Rogers, anyway.

RE: Popcorn Time
Thanks for the recommendation.

RE: Selma
Great movie. I can see why people might have been miffed at the Oscar snub. David Oyelowo was so good as King, but I think the strength of the film is the ensemble cast. Aside from Oyelowo, no on else stood out, but I can't think of one weak performance...although I did find Ribisi a little distracting, only because he was playing against type.

March 10, 2015 @ 10:08 AM

I haven't been interested in the Losers Leafs since, oh...the spring of 1976, right up until I saw my first ever live game at the Gardens, one in which they were blown out by a weak team. Ownership philosophy was stated best by Harold Ballard, who essentially didn't believe in spending the money to put a real winner on the ice, so just vacuum as much money as you can out of the suckers who will throw theirs at the team. People wonder why nothing has really changed, the team being a regular/continual disappointment year after year? None of the series of owners has taken a hit to the profit statement. Having said that, I like what you wrote, Handsome Rob.

I have watched some games this year, but none live. Mike, you might want to check out the OHL and other non-NHL games. I think I have seen as many of those as NHL games. Those guys are playing either for their jobs/careers now or to move up and play anywhere but in Toronto.

Ryan G - There is pile like in your photo, but dozens of times worse, behind my office building. A lot of the nurses next door chain smoke on their breaks. They do have a bin, but it fills up (too) quickly, and I don't think anyone takes ownership/responsibility to empty it and dispose of the excrement.

So my phone was getting quite flaky and my contract being up I decided to upgrade. I thought about an android ,Blackberry or sticking with an Iphone. In the end having bought a few items from the itunes store i stayed with iPhone.

I now have a 64Gb iPhone 6 .

So far i like it. Much improved camera/video for one thing (over my 4S anyway) and of course going from a 16Gb to 64Gb phone is pretty sweet.

I also like the size increase. It's bigger but not oversized, I did consider the 6 plus but it was simply too much money and i think a little too big .

The best thing is the touch ID access .

i know a lot of people have gone away from iPhones to android and simply because Apple sucks a bit as a company i thought about it but in the end I was too lazy to switch LOL

Can't believe I haven't had to put on my winter boots this week, great feeling.
Only down fall of the weather change is what Ryan and Ben have noted. Just don't get the tossing of butts, I don't even toss my biodegradable apple cores when driving.
Ben V, tough spot to be out in with your neighbor, you know it isn't going end amicably, good luck. I had a similar situation with a previous neighbour's blue box blowing it's contents out on windy days, luckily they moved.

In case you didn't hear The Stafford Show this morning, Mike gave you a couple of very nice shout-outs. Nice plug for your site and podcast - so that was pretty cool.

I think Ryan Bonner (he's quite the character) would be a lot of fun to have on one of your podcasts. Now that I think about it, it'd be really neat to have Ryan and Chris Creston on together - particularly since they have their own podcast. They have great chemistry.

The lumbersexuals (those Paul Buyan looking mo fo's) in Liberty Village were sporting shorts yesterday - or, pants cut off at the knees. There were still a lot of Canada Douche jackets around. It was confusing yet entertaining. I ate lunch outside and watched them - kind of like watching animals in the wild.

March 10, 2015 @ 1:12 PM

I've never got that look - the parka with shorts look. If its cold enough for a parka, its too cold for shorts and if its warm enough for shorts, its too warm for a parka.

I was mentioned on Stafford's show? Very cool.. I had no idea.

I wonder if his show becomes a podcast somewhere so I can hear that.

March 10, 2015 @ 1:26 PM

Maybe Ryan could isolate the audio for you - Mike talked about being on your podcast etc at the beginning of the first hour. It was very sweet - very complimentary and genuine. Then there was something else at the top of hour two. Again, it was cool. Good on you!

March 10, 2015 @ 1:35 PM

There's no reasoning with the hipsters. They dance to the beat of their own drummer, and all that. Today's sighting included flip flops, pants cut off at the knees and the Canada Douche jacket - the long version. All on the same person. Most notable was the ginormous 'man bun'. That thing was bouncing along like crazy. Lots of cool colours, too. As I started to look away, I was treated to a look at buddy's toes - each toe nail was painted a different, vibrant colour. I laughed, he caught me looking at this toes and said, "Hey, thanks! My daughter's handy work. Pretty cool, eh?" Yeah, pretty cool. Why not? Spring fever hits in a bunch of different ways.

March 10, 2015 @ 1:41 PM

Not only am I disinterested in the Leafs these days, but I actually don't like them. This is the most unlikeable bunch I can remember in my 34 years. Between, salute-gate, sleeping in, lack of effort, a captain with the personality of a cardboard cutout, there's just not much for me with this group. At least bring in some guys that will put up a fight out there.

Ben V, the Popcorn Time asks for a lot of permissions. And my Samsung tablet warns me not to download apps not supplied by Google Play. Have you had any concerns with the PT corrupting your system?

March 10, 2015 @ 1:57 PM

I had the same experience as Eekan Boo when downloading Popcorn. I also have a an Android tablet. Didn't want to take the chance.

March 10, 2015 @ 2:07 PM

Ben V

@ Argie & Eeekan Boo: I wouldn't worry. It's in Google and androids best interest to downloads apps directly from their google play store. Popcorntime which used to be time4popcorn actually had an android app which they are looking to revamp.

You can go and google a bunch of reviews. It's currently being titled as the Hollywood frustrater and how it will be impossible to shut down ever.

in terms of security, I have two friends who are much more tech savvy than I with understanding this stuff and both of them gave their thumbs up of approval.

March 10, 2015 @ 2:57 PM

If anyone thinks Leafs ownership doesn't spend money on the team, HNIC reminded us a few weeks ago the team is currently paying >$51 MILLION dollars on players that currently do not play on the team and/or for the Leafs organization and/or in the NHL.

While this highlights a huge problem when it comes to player and cap management, you cannot accurately say MLSE doesn't spend money on the team.

March 10, 2015 @ 3:09 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The argument that MLSE isn't trying to win holds no water.

They spend lots of money, just not wisely.

March 10, 2015 @ 3:11 PM

I actually get annoyed if I turn a Leafs game on. I think Carlyle know exactly what he had in this team and tried to play to the few strengths that existed.

I feel sorry for Horachek. I think he is a nice guy and this team just doesn't want to respond to him or anyone it seems.

March 10, 2015 @ 3:17 PM

we loaded popcorntime and it is awesome. seen so many movies in the past weeks. last night it was 'the wolf of wall street' - which i have to admit i had no interest in seeing - but i LOVED it. the party scenes were hilarious. jonah hill was incredible.
only problem was - waaaaaay tooo long.

I don't know about the Android version. I'm running it on my PC and haven't had any security issues.

4x4 Time

My grandson was born last Friday night and due to some minor complications he needed to spend a couple of days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). He is fine now, and my daughter and little Dylan are home safe and sound.
There were 8 babies in the NICU on the two days we were there. On both days my wife and I visited, we saw the same older couple holding and caring for two little babies. We thought they were grandparents, but it turns out they were volunteers who come in and share some affection and time for babies who have been given up at birth, with nowhere to go yet. These are good people and this world needs more like them.

March 10, 2015 @ 4:17 PM

Further to Al and Gunter I have downloaded it on my HP lap top which I picked up in December. With the free copy of Norton software you get for 30 days the use of Popcorn time didn't bring up any errors or security risks.

@4x4 Time

My first born was a preemie and spent 10 days in the NICU. Baby #3 went in with dehydration when he was a few days old. Sick Kids NICU can be heartbreaking. Luckily, we were only there for a couple of weeks.

March 10, 2015 @ 4:21 PM

Marcus Stroman who the Jays were counting on to be there No. 2 starter has torn his ACL in spring training and is done for the season.

That's. Not. Fair.

Fun fact: Stroman chews 7 pieces of gum when he pitches.

We're going to miss him big time in 2015.

March 10, 2015 @ 5:20 PM

Congrats to your grandson and you.
The volunteers are very special people as are the nurses who work in the NICU.
You didn't say which hospital, but it doesn't really matter , they are all outstanding people.

March 10, 2015 @ 6:53 PM

And regarding the weather?
How the hell can you call for sunny and 10 degrees and end up with overcast and 4?? And have zero accountability . Don't you wish your job was as secure??

March 10, 2015 @ 6:58 PM

Well, so there's the Tuesday open Mike. Oh well, between periods. No score on the Habs game. My Orioles won this afternoon. Anyway, as I said, my trainer likes Dean Blundell. We went skating today and he told me that he really likes Dean Blundell. Well, I'll give him a listen tomorrow if I think of it. Probably not the whole show though, but my trainer thinks he is a great announcer, very very good. I guess he is good if my trainer thinks he is.

March 10, 2015 @ 8:27 PM

James Edgar

@ 4x4 Congrats!

The "leafs don't spend money " storyline cracks me up. Occasionally someone will say that to me and i'll say "they spend to the cap, what else can they do?" the blank looks are priceless. Even better is "what cap? "

Mike said it perfectly. They spend money , Lots of it. Just not wisely. Unfortunately that has gone on so long it will take years to straighten out . If it can be. I'm not holding my breath.

All I have is "Go Sabres Go!"

March 11, 2015 @ 9:05 AM

My Habs lost last night and so did my Nets. My Habs couldn't score any goals. I hope they can turn things around. Good thing the Raptors lost. Okay. Here is my take on Dean Blundell. I didn't listen that long, but I went out of my way to listen to him. Well, I like a lot of things my trainer likes, but I do not agree about Dean Blundell. He's an idiot. He isn't very funny. Seems like this George guy is the one who knows about sports, not him. Anyway, I have no idea why my trainer likes Dean Blundell, but he does and I don't like him. Anyway, most morning show hosts are pretty bad. Pete Griffin was one of the best ones. Radio has gone downhill lately. I listen to internet radio for hockey, baseball, basketball and football. Anyway, now I know why you guys don't like Dean Blundell.

March 11, 2015 @ 9:20 AM

The Leafs have been crap since 2004. Their only appearance in the playoffs in 2013 was an aberration. It was also a shortened season due to the lockout so we'll never know if they could have held on to a playoff spot in a regular 82 game season. Judging by last season and this season I would say "hell no."

The one constant in Leaf management throughout the dreadful JFJ and Burke years has been Larry Tanenbaum. If there's one person to blame - it could be him. Someone needs to buy him out and quickly.

March 11, 2015 @ 10:21 AM

Since the introduction of the salary cap, the Leafs have been mediocre at their absolute best. John Ferguson Jr. and the Leaf brain trust totally misread where the league was going signing players like Lindros, Jason Allison who were done and traded for players like Jeff O'Neill who was starting to wind down. Solid draft picks like Tukka Rask were traded, in 2007 the team didn't even draft in the first 2 rounds. Total failure. Burke arrived, the circus and poor decision making continued. The buy vs build philosophy has clearly failed. They have pieces, but even these aren't cohesive and consistent. What they lack is nowhere on the horizon and can't be quickly or easily acquired.

Are we patient enough to accept bad hockey (as long as it comes with a modicum of effort) while the cupboard is restocked?

How long will a rebuild take? Have they cleared enough cap to be able to poach players from cap-bound teams (Chicago)? Do they have enough picks for the next 2-3 years? It's a real shame to think we're 3-5 years away from the possibility of having a truly competitive team and that might even be overly optimistic. Yikes.

March 11, 2015 @ 11:27 AM

The Leafs are a sick joke? Here's a bigger sick joke. White House Cannot Confirm Reports on US Advisors Allegedly Aiding ISIL: Washington does not have information to confirm press reports that US and Israeli military advisors were arrested while allegedly aiding Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Iraq, a US State Department official told Sputnik on Tuesday.

March 11, 2015 @ 11:55 AM

Ummmm I think they're called mercenaries... There is a long history of that... they also make up 30% of the American Intelligence services (Edward Snowden).

I guess the execution of the claimed Israeli spy was also just for show.

Guessing the helpful Iranian advisors spotted all these.

March 11, 2015 @ 3:43 PM

My Orioles lost again. Sucks. They lost to the Jays. They better win again soon. They're 3 and 7 now which sucks.

March 11, 2015 @ 4:35 PM

My Nets lost last night, but my Suns won. The Leafs also won last night but the Sabres suck as well so maybe that's why the Leafs had to win. I see my trainer today. I'll tell him what I think of Dean Blundell. I bet you if Pete Griffin heard him, he would turn over in his grave.

March 12, 2015 @ 7:16 AM

My Orioles lost today. This sucks. Anyway, I told my trainer I don't like Dean Blundell and he said he is not surprised. He said he appeals more to younger guys. He said he doesn't know a lot about sports because he was on a music station before. Anyway, He said he got fired from that station because of something that he shouldn't have said and people complained, but then he said people shouldn't listen if they don't like it. Anyway, my Habs will win tonight I hope. They have to score though. Carey Price can't do everything. Poor Carey Price stood on his head the other day, but the Habs didn't score.
