The GTA and the NBA

The GTA and the NBAThe NBA Draft is tonight. Several Canadians, mostly from the GTA, are likely to be drafted.

That would make this by far the best NBA draft for Canadian talent. The previous high for Canadians drafted was three, set in 1983 and 2012. This year, three Canadians may go in the first round alone.

Here are 8 Canadians with a shot at being drafted tonight. Note that seven of them are from the GTA.

  • Andrew Wiggins of Thornhill, Ontario
  • Nik Stauskas of Mississauga, Ontario
  • Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ontario
  • Melvin Ejim of Toronto, Ontario
  • Jordan Bachynski of Toronto, Ontario
  • Dwight Powell of Toronto, Ontario
  • Sim Bhullar of Toronto, Ontario
  • Khem Birch of Montreal, Quebec

Toronto has become a basketball factory. Go figure...

Wiggins first overall to the Cavs!

Stauskas 8th overall to the Kings!

Ennis 18th overall to the Suns!

And the Raptors pick with their 20th overall selection... some guy named Bruno Caboclo from Brazil. Nobody saw that coming, including Bruno Caboclo who didn't even bother coming to Brooklyn.

Remind me in 4 years to find out whatever became of Bruno Caboclo.

Nevermind just Canadians, look at the representation for just Toronto. I believe I heard somewhere that Toronto (GTA) is the only city to ever produce consecutive first overall picks in the NBA draft. Times they are a changing.

Oh and BTW, the way I see it, we have 4 people/organizations to thank for this emergence of elite basketball players in this country.

In order of importance:

4. The Vancouver Grizzlies
3. Steve Nash
2. The Toronto Raptors
1. Vince Carter

#1 is by far the biggest factor.

Jordon, Magic & Bird should be given credit as well as they were the guys who brought the NBA to another level. Their fans are the parents of those new draftees.

Wiggns will be a bust. Just skin & bones, no muscle. But he must be happy, the hype machine just earned him million & millions of $$$$$$.

He said he had nothing left to prove in college. Hey Wiggy, what exactly did u do at Kansas? & what did u do in the tourney?
Oh yeah scored 4pts in a crucial game. Ya, u a big time player, dog.

@ToDog
I kind of agree. Ennis and Stauskas seem much more NBA ready than Wiggins.

Jordon, Magic and Bird became household names all around the world, but they did little to effect the quality of basketball player in this country or else we would have started turning out quality players a lot sooner.

I think that the NBA coming to Canada and the early success of those exciting Raptors teams is what captured the imaginations of young Wiggins, Ennis, Stauskis and Bennett. They have all at some point or another credited Vince Carter as someone who they looked up to growing up. It's no coincidence that all these elite Canadian players are coming from the GTA.

I also think that if TFC could at some point turn things around, the success of MLS and it's players on the World Cup stage could translate into Canada turning out better soccer players too. Only time will tell, but I predict in the next 10-20 years we'll see a Canadian team in the world cup.
