Ross Winters Fired as Program Director at 102.1

radioThere was a time when complaining about the demise of CFNY / 102.1 the Edge was what we did best over here. Our primary target was usually Program Director Ross Winters who prompted former Edge DJ Barry Taylor to label the station "Top 40 with grunge".

Corus Entertainment has just given Ross Winters the boot. The man who let Martin Streek and Barry Taylor go, brought us Fearless Fred from Edmonton, said farewell to Jason Barr and Bookie, is no longer Program Director at CFNY.

Cool Steve might have said it best. "The alternative format is left without a good home to represent it." We're left with our MP3 playlists, Spotify, satellite radio and music blogs.

The Edge became dull long ago.

Good riddance mother fucker!!!
R.I.P. Martin forever.

Assuming he isn't just replaced with Ross Winters II, maybe the station will turn around a bit?

Since the Edge's ratings hadn't really dipped, and advertisers were paying money (The Only Thing That Matters), I wonder what happened?

July 16, 2013 @ 4:01 PM

Is this the same guy who decided Jason Barr was the best guy to fire out of the three?

Well, it's all about money... so my hopes are not very high.

I say 'I dont care' as least argumentative as possible.
When I got my new car last year, it had SiriusXM, and I've been hooked.
If I feel like a break, or want something specific, I plug in my Ipod.
I subscribe to rdio and listen to it at work.
I buy lots of vinyl and CDs, and follow lots of music blogs.

I couldn't care less what 102.1 does, they've long been irrelevant.

July 16, 2013 @ 4:12 PM

Was Winters even working full time from Toronto? These are all really faceless people overall -- you wouldn't find them chatting to listeners on Twitter, etc

July 16, 2013 @ 4:22 PM

I don't get the Fearless Fred hate. I enjoy his special brand of sarcasm, how he spars with listeners, and he seems fairly educated. He himself is more entertaining than the endless loop of repeated songs they play these days.

Of course, I haven't listened to 102 in a couple of months, since I installed a Bluetooth stereo in my car...

July 16, 2013 @ 4:40 PM

Ya, he seems like he can't let a grudge go. It's a shame.

July 16, 2013 @ 4:58 PM

Program directors these days are almost an afterthought. Most of the music programming and direction of the station are done at a corporate level - radio consultants dictate what to play at what times and how much or little 'dj's actually do.

I'm like @519 Rob, I listen to my Sirius in my car and on my Sonos at home. The only terrestrial stations I ever listen to is Fan590 and 680News for traffic.

And this is coming from a guy who wanted to work in radio for a long, long time.

July 16, 2013 @ 5:06 PM

Regular Edge 1 or 2 has been dead to me since the late 90s when "nu-metal" became a thing. I still listened to Ongoing History when I could, and often the Sunday night retro.

In 2001 I moved to Ottawa for six years and completely lost touch with radio.

When I returned, I sporadically tuned in, and I remember enjoying a couple retro nights when Streek was still around. Then one night when I put it on, the most (seemingly) vapid airhead ever taken over and was offering tips on how to go party on a Sunday night and still make it to work on Monday! Like the shallowest magazine article. It was just so cringe-inducing, I could deal with her and was done with it.

I tried again maybe a year ago to discover the whole retro thing was just gone completely now.

I actually listened to Blundell for the first time ever for a few days, 1-2 weeks ago, because I'd run out of podcasts, and didn't mind him and his show at all. But the commercials, and that god awful USS - This Is The Best song scared me away again.

Luckily I have 400 episodes of a new-to-me podcast to keep me occupied for a long time now.

July 16, 2013 @ 5:13 PM

I still haven't listen since they fired Jason. I still don't know why they did.

Maybe I will return, not that a 39 year old man is their demo.

And I really don't get why FF hates you. If he took a moment and looked at what really happened he may not have such rage towards you.

Can anyone give an update on just when the hell Indie 88.1 is launching? Alan Cross hinted at this summer, but I've just started driving to work again and terrestrial radio in general is quite unlistenable.

I'm part of Corus's connected surveys where they ask me to comment on the Edge every few months, and the number 1 complaint i constantly have is music repetition. If i was a dj there i'd put a revolver in my mouth. (on a side note, I once had a girlfriend who liked to strap a cue ball in my mouth). it's so bad i soon hate every song I hear on that station.

On another note, there was a recent article i read online suggesting about 16% of Canadians are cable-cutters, and they are cable and satellite free, and only watch tv via online sources. I'm curious if this percentage is roughly the same amongst TO Mike's readership - how do you watch "TV" nowadays?

July 16, 2013 @ 6:23 PM

MIke- do you have any insight on this? Todd has been absent from DBS for a few days and Dean hasn't mentioned much except "he's on vacation- dunno where".

July 16, 2013 @ 6:40 PM

Fearless Fred has a right to be miffed with you. I recall this debate because I was working in Edmonton at the time. You judged Fred because of what you found online about him & what he was doing at 100.3 The Bear. The personality Fred had on the air at 100.3 The Bear was assumed to be who he was. That's where you were wrong. You see, the Edmonton radio market is much different than Toronto. Edmonton radio is very competitive and, as far as radio goes, quite diverse. 100.3 The Bear is a de-facto ass kicking active rock station. The Bears audience is primarily male & many of those males are blue collar. The station is rough & it's radio personalities are allowed to be personalities (give Yukon Jack's Big Yap a listen sometime).

Problem is you assumed that the persona Fearless did at the Bear defined who he was. Fred is an entertainer, he knew his audience AND he was successful. That's why he's at the Edge.

One more thing to consider. Having lived in Edmonton myself (twice) people in Edmonton get tired of hearing their city get knocked especially from outsiders. Edmonton reminds me of this guy I used to weight lift with at Clubfit. We became friends because we both had Harley's. This guy was a hard looking, tattooed dude that looked like he might shoot out your windows. Yet, get to know him and you'd realize was a chef, loved to garden & his best friend was his pug named Percival (seriously lol). What you saw on the outside was not necessarily what it was. That's Edmonton.

Also realize citizens of Edmonton gets tired of being the butt of jokes. Witness Chris Selley and her comment on if the Calgary floods had of happened in Edmonton "Edmonton, for example, would be a smoking hole in the ground at this point, infested with twitchy-eyed, machete-wielding savages.. Reality is just the opposite. Edmonton would be the city that held it together & not freaked out. It holds it together through tornadoes, ass kicking hail storms, -45C for 3 months @ nearly non existent daylight in the winter. When I lived there I NEVER heard people complain about the weather. And believe me man, you ain't seen cold till you're in ice fog driving the Henday.

Fred is a true pro Mike. He knew his audience was coming off shift in Refinery Row on a Friday, grabbing a flat of cold beer & heading down Baseline Road with Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child on the radio. His shtick worked at the Bear. Don't judge him because he was doing his job (and doing it well).

July 16, 2013 @ 7:05 PM

Hey Irvine, first of all Selley is male, and second, I can't believe how many times I've seen that context-less quote pop-up online now. Holy hell he was being insanely sarcastic and criticising the Calgary Herald, not Edmonton.

The exact quote from the Herald was, with respect to the flooding, "There was no major crime, there was no rioting. That sort of thing has happened elsewhere because diasters can bring out the worst in people. But that's not southern Alberta's way and never has been." [Emphasis mine.]

Selley sarcastically added that the Calgary Herald's implication was, "Edmonton, for example would be a smoking hole in the ground at this point, infested with twitch-eyed, machete-wielding savages.

Instead of getting the point, certain high-profile Edmontonians went crazy over it.

Did you listen to Fearless Fred's spiel about this?

He was pissed at me b/c of things said about his wife and family in the comments. He felt I unfairly went at his family, which of course I did not.

It had nothing to do with the fun we had with his website.

July 16, 2013 @ 8:52 PM

Whether it was sarcastic or not isn't the point. It's a case of someone making a comment based on a stereotype & in Edmonton it's a sore point. Take a look at how defensive someone gets in Toronto if you point out it's economic weaknesses or if you attack "Leaf Nation". People go ape-shit. Having been a citizen of both Calgary and Edmonton (combined 20+ years) I believe I've got the experience to comment on it. It was a stupid comment even if made in jest. And Edmonton is hardly a city of mushy whiny types. Selley's comment, like Mike's was based on stereotypes which are wrong.

As to why I assumed Selley was female was because I watched Twitter raging & whoever was attacking her assumed it was a she.

As for the comment on flooding and rioting, I would like to make a comment. Many of the flooded areas were inhabited by folks who had the economic capacity to leave the area for extended periods of time. It doesn't diminish what they lost by any means (I spent a week of backbreaking house cleaning believe me) but they did have the option of leaving for higher ground. The outcome could have been different if an area living day by day on a limited income had of been hit. Not to mention the Alberta government acted very quickly & handed out cash cards for $1250 dollars per person per anyone who was affected. They did a SPLENDID job. It's as much a reflection of who was flooded & how the government acted as it is to the character of Albertan's

But I'll say one thing bud. I lived in several places in Alberta for a combined total of 20+ years. Albertans, north or south, especially the long time residents, are hardened, tough souls that face adversity all the time. I included the people in Edmonton. Hey, look at Slave Lake, which literally burned down and ppl put it back together.

Another Lurker

In light of this news it's interesting to go back and read the Ballad of Martin Streek from the Globe and Mail:

July 16, 2013 @ 9:29 PM

I wrote this comment about 4 years ago and still appropriate today...

'Alan Cross, Ross Winters.....does it really matter who the Program Director is anymore?? Does any radio station really need one?? They are all programmed the same way....same cycles....same repetition factor....etc etc etc etc etc.

Complete GARBAGE!

Toronto has to have the worst radio stations anywhere. So corporate and safe'

By the Irvine back?

July 16, 2013 @ 9:40 PM

C'mon Mike, personal attacks against you have happened on here. You were quick to delete them. We've had this discussion which lead to an IP in Barrie, Ontario (Tek-Savvy).

PS. To the guy in Barrie. I know who you are lol.

July 16, 2013 @ 9:42 PM

No Sammi, I'm simply here for a short time. I need some help moving, got some time?

July 16, 2013 @ 9:44 PM

@Irvine, congrats on stereotyping someone while criticising him for stereotyping?

The whole point of his feature is these quips. I'm sorry you identify as a machete-wielding savage? That comment was so freaking over-the-top.

And frankly any Torontonian that gets bent out of shape over "Leaf Nation" especially is ridiculous. I didn't realise attacking Toronto's economy was even a thing?

Honestly, the over-sensitivity of people is preposterous. I especially liked Ezra Levant getting bent out of shape over Selley's comment -- the king of the Right To Offend. (Which I don't even disagree with!)

July 16, 2013 @ 10:02 PM

I must be really old as am I the only one to think that the Fearless Fred persona is an exact rip off of the 1990 Christian Slater movie "Pump Up The Volume". Not only in voice pitch but exact phasing and meandering rants!

I agree with most comments so far and have been a loyal listener of CFNY since the late 70's (yes you heard me right).

July 16, 2013 @ 10:05 PM

Well, well, well. Irvine is finally posting under his real name. Thought that was a no no under the terms of your employment. And you're moving? Did you get fired, chump?

July 16, 2013 @ 10:25 PM

@Corey. Contract done Corey, I'm currently doing nothing for the next 6 months (please see my Facebook dude). What happens in the future who knows. I'm moving from the West End (Haro Street) to Bowen Island. C'mon buy.

@Markosaar. Well Chris Selley could always go to Edmonton and apologize LOL.

PS Corey, just because someone posts and doesn't agree with you doesn't make them me. You went on this rant while I was cleaning out flooded houses assuming it was me. *yay*. Oh and I'm not the 40oz Krew. That's a black hat hacker group as far as I know *smile*

July 16, 2013 @ 10:38 PM

David Marsden does a terrific show on The Rock FM (94.9 out of Oshawa) on Saturday and Sunday evenings/nights.
The Spirit of Radio lives on.... barely.

Freud. I spent 7 months teaching my kid Linux commands and how to do DHCP flooding with Kali Linux. C'mon, give a guy a break.

July 17, 2013 @ 1:03 AM

@Irvine - you might want to look up "rant" in the dictionary. Sure, I called you out a couple times, but it was just because I found it so amusing how easily you could be spotted.

I disagree with lots of folks here, Irv. I don't think they're all you. Nope, thankfully there's only one Irvine, and he stands out like a pus-filled boil no matter what name he chooses.

July 17, 2013 @ 6:52 AM

"currently doing nothing for the next 6 months"

Oh great - I guess we can expect the usual irvisms (i.e. Toronto and ON are bankrupt, all true conservatives are rednecks, Alberta and its people are awesome, muslim terrorists are great, etc).

July 17, 2013 @ 8:32 AM

519 Rob

Irv is back, so let the mud slinging begin.

Anyway, I want to talk music again.
I echo the sentiments from those that have stated that is unlikely anything will change at The Edge with a new PD. They are still gonna play the shit out of...well...I don't know what they play anymore (maybe I should tune in some day for fun).

I suppose I should say, its not like I never listen to AM/FM, its just very selective. Living in the 519, I listen to our local FM station in the morning for news and weather. Then they'll play something by Buble or Spears, and I move on.
AM 570 or 590 for Jays games (THEY SUCK) and occasionally Y108 from The Hammer (great morning show with chemistry).

I am intrigued by Indie88, and am looking forward to seeing where that goes. They recently hired Raina from CBC3, who should add some spark to their afternoons.

But the reality is, I am in a SiriusXM / Ipod / Vinyl cycle, and its unlikely that radio will get much more that a small sliver of my interest and/or time.

That sounds about right.

July 17, 2013 @ 11:10 AM

Does anyone know where Toddytickles is???

I heard early this week Dean said he was sick then the next day he said he's on vacation then today no mention?

July 17, 2013 @ 11:15 AM

@Argie, I actually didn't mean to make it a personal attack with the "stupid" part ... I edited it down from including all of Edmonton, as I suspect that most of the city got the joke. Just a few oversensitive cranks including their mayor. And Irvine.

July 17, 2013 @ 11:48 AM

Nope Argie, I bought a small boat (30 foot) and moored it on Bowen Island. I'm working part time while going to take a run at a very challenging computer certification. House hunting too though that's not priority 1.

FYI @Argie & @Corey. Your claim that 99% of terrorists are Muslim is off the mark. There are many types of terrorists gents including environmental terrorists. Here's a fact for you to chew on. At this moment the biggest threat to Canada is cyber-terrorism. Our industry (especially our energy industry) and our institutions ARE at risk. The PTA1, a wing of the Chinese army has admitted to attacking American corporations & the government. It's a game of stealing trade and technical secrets using cyber espionage. How do you feel about the sale of Nexen to China now? I'm not even going to begin to point out the exploits common in most small to medium companies computer networks. That's the real terrorist threat to Canada dudes. TRUST me.

Finally Argie, I really want to give you some advice (meant in a friendly way). Please be extra cautious about going on rants that attack religious groups and/or others cultures. Those points can come back to haunt you. Web servers and forums are notoriously insecure & exploits are common. Using SQL injection, metasploit, etc makes exploiting a webserver very easy. After that it's basic reconn using Maltego and ALL your stuff comes up. The implications are severe Argie.

Markosaar. I live in Vancouver so I don't care what Selley said. But if you think Toronto isn't overly sensitive you've never lived anywhere else.

Now, back to real life.

Wonder if he was fired for bringing in that Greg guy to fill in for Bookie.

July 17, 2013 @ 2:32 PM

I appreciate the advice (I mean that sincerely). I agree I post comments that aren't the most complimentary to some groups but when I'm serious, I post facts.

I don't make up anything, nor do I call for any group to be targeted or attacked. Most of the time, I'm just stating the obvious - but I agree there are people out there who would do whatever it takes to stifle free speech and attack the messenger.

I would hate to live in a world where we can only post politically correct comments and only discuss things like the weather or how much we miss Martin Streek.

YYC Radio Guy

Out here in Calgary Corus recently fired Dave Rutherford because he criticized the station. It went off the air in the flood and was forced to relay 630 CHED from Edmonton. In this business it was an absolute disaster. Dave Rutherford put his heart & soul into the station and was thrown out like the trash. I was heartened to read the comments in the paper giving Dave so much support. Ross wasn't liked when he was in charge of the Corus cluster in Vancouver. PS. Fun fact about Irvine. He is actually in the Canadian Military.

July 18, 2013 @ 11:21 AM

Mike, I don't want to question your sources, but are you sure Ross got fired? I mean, here it is, several days after your initial posting of the news, and the guy is still listed on The Edge website as PD. If he has indeed been sent packing from Corus Quay, or has been transitioned over to a different position, why isn't anybody (radio boards, social media, the internet) talking about it? The overwhelming sound of crickets makes me wonder about the veracity of this story.

July 19, 2013 @ 10:20 AM

I heard it from two sources who usually know what they're talking about.

And the crickets work two ways... if he was still PD over there, someone would have written me, tweeted at me or left a comment to say my story is bullshit.

July 19, 2013 @ 10:25 AM

Is he the reason the last twelve to fifteen years have been so terrible? Edge is so obsessed with increasing their demographic to young girls they don't care they haven't played anything alternative or edgy in years. Hell, these clowns pumped Coldplay nonstop. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hopefully this means Josie Dye gets a pink slip shortly.

July 19, 2013 @ 12:40 PM

Not to mention the six josie clones they have on now like Melanie and the like who aren't fit to shine Barry Taylors shoes.

July 19, 2013 @ 12:44 PM

@YYC guy

I'm sorry but your information is incorrect. I am not nor have I ever been enlisted in the Canadian military. One of two things has happened. My leather motorcycle jacket has US marine Master Sergeant insignia on the arms. The insignia is orange. The second is that on certain occasions I wear a dress uniform which probably looks like military garb. It's your typical formal uniform.

July 19, 2013 @ 4:38 PM

Thanks Mike. One thing I've always appreciated about this blog is that, for radio-biz stuff, you're always spot-on with your info, going with actual fact as opposed to rumour or speculation. If you got the details from a couple internal sources, I trust your judgement for putting it on the blog.

July 23, 2013 @ 1:36 PM

All these great talented people left or were fired from Edge 102 yet Josie Dye still has a job....How is that possible?

July 23, 2013 @ 5:31 PM

Todd was fired too. Perhaps they will get rid of Dean soon and the evil trifecta will be nothing but an unpleasant memory.

July 23, 2013 @ 6:46 PM

I think you all need to get over your selves. The time of people tuning into a radio host to hear the inside info on a band are over. I don't need a dull Bookie, or Martin to yammer on about a band that I could find on Google. As a 38 year old male, I enjoy the toilet humour that is the DBS, as well as the entertainment provided by Josie. In fact, Josie is the reason I still listen to the Edge. She makes a workday of dealing with customers, not so stressful. And I’m not the only one. Most of my customers are contractors, their service trucks and work radios are all tuned to the Edge. Why you ask? Because of DBS or Josie! Dean Blundell, Josie, and Fearless know their audience, which is why they are successful. If you don’t like them that is your choice, but wishing them all fired is just plain childish. You just have to face it that Bookie, and certainly Martin are not coming back. There is a reason those people were let go, left, or fired. It’s called ratings! Radio is a business. If you don’t get the ratings, you’re gone. It’s that simple. Now let me leave you with the following:
The Dean Blundell Show was awarded 2011's "Top Radio Program (Morning Show)" award by Top Choice Awards

July 24, 2013 @ 9:43 AM

Dean confirmed that Todd is no longer with the show today at 9:59 am as they were signing off...An announcement on this replacement will becoming in the coming weeks
