Fearless Fred On His Way to Edge 102

radioBack in May, when CFNY / Edge 102 showed Martin Streek and Barry Taylor the door, I reported that Fearless Fred from The Bear in Edmonton had been hired as a replacement.

The Twittersphere has exploded the past 24 hours with news Fearless Fred has aired his last show on The Bear and is now on his way to the centre of the universe.

fearless fred

I kid, of course. About the explosion of Fearless Fred chatter in the Twittersphere, not about him leaving his Edmonton gig for a spot at CFNY / Edge 102. Three tweets does not a trending topic make.

There's still no official announcement from CFNY / Edge 102 that Fearless Fred is on his way or where he'll appear in the lineup. My hunch is they'll move Bookie and put Fearless Fred in the afternoon drive spot. Fearless Fred is far more Dean Blundell Show-ish than Bookie and more in line with the kind of radio Program Director Ross Winters seems to crave for this Corus-owned station.

How many final nails in the coffin does one station get?

Guess Bookie's gone next. Shame, he is about the last good personality there now.

Good work Corus, one less station to listen to.

My best guess is they move Bookie, but don't fire him.

But it's a shame. I like Dave Bookman and thought he was a smart replacement for Brother Bill (now Neil Morrison in Vancouver).

I sure hope they don't can him.

Oh great. Just what we need. Another Dean Blundell. Hurrah.

I always liked Bookie. This sucks.

100.3 The Nickelback. Too funny.

I might steal that.

102.1 The Nickelback.

I really am going to have to find a new radio station to listen to now. I keep hoping it will get better but it keeps getting worse.

This afternoon I heard back to back Bob Marley on the Edge. I switched to Q107 in protest and London Calling by the Clash was playing. Was it a blip in the radio space-time continuum or has Corus really lost it.

August 8, 2009 / 21:46

Fearsome Fred

Rock radio in the social media age requires personalities who women want to pose for photos with. And likes doing the occasional keg stand. And makes young men excited about buying stuff they don't need.

Bookie isn't going to be that guy.

August 9, 2009 / 00:22

Lorne

If Bookie goes, then I don't have any reason left to listen. The only difference between a radio and my mp3 player, really, is the DJs. Given than every DJ except Bookie relies on reading email forwards and "jokes" from the Internet instead of music knowledge and interesting commentary-- I'll stick with the player.

For times when I'm without a player, aside from Q107 and 94.9, I've found:

95.7 (Barrie)
107.9 (Hamilton, but alas another Courus product)
97.7 (nice replacement coming out of Niagara)

August 9, 2009 / 00:25

Andrew (with a Captial "A")

Bookie knows music. That's why I listen, but Ross Winters doesn't care about me.

I hope Bookie lands well. Moving him is just as bad a firing him.

Irvine

Wow, look at all these comments. Typical of people in Onterrible, you've never heard the guy but you already are going to stop listening.

Fearless Fred is an excellent radio personality. Fred is a perfect fit for 102.1, Bookie is not. What most of you can't get is that Edge is a 'burner' rock station and has been for years. Um, sorry to wake you out of your trance, but Green Day, Pearl Jam, Billy Talentless & AlexisonFire are all perfect examples of modern day "mullet head" music. You guys just can't get over yourself.

As for Fred being compared to Blundell. Sorry, not in the same league. 100.3 The Bear is a de facto rock radio station. It's loud, it's gritty, it's announcers cross the line ALL the time. Fred fits right in there. It's all about the chicks and Vitamin P. And Fred excelled in a radio market that is superior AND more competitive to that in Toronto

Blundell is nothing more than a burned out wanna-be. He's the bad guy always willing to shoot off his mouth. Yet wasn't he the same guy that had to get the lawyers to pull a cease and desist on Shred and Regan at 103.3 The Edge in Buffalo. Aww muffin, what's wrong did they hurt your feelings? Real "tough" guys dish it out and take it, not cry like a little girl when someone one-upps them.

Least we have no fear of Blundell coming West. His girly white ass wouldn't last 10 minutes in E-Town.

Fearless, all the best in Toronto. Congrats man. Sorry about having to work for Ross Wanker. Just a few tips on Toronto. They whine about everything. When it's -15C they issue an "extreme cold alert". When it snows 4 cms it's "Breaking News" and the city grinds into gridlock. The people expect the government to solve everything. And, they talk endlessly about how "dangerous" the city has become when the crime rate is half that of Winnipeg or Edmonton. Wouldn't last 20 minutes on 97th & Jasper

But, it's got some nice countryside. And some good microbrewery beers. And it's got humidity.

Irvine,
You've got to stop sniffing the fumes from the Tar Sands, if it is not that, then you should see your doctor about upping the dosage on your meds.

August 9, 2009 / 14:57

@Lorne

You just "found" these stations? Were they lost? lol

These stations have been on the air for 15 years or more (though Y108 used to be Y95).

Since the demise of JACK, I spend more time on these three frequencies (and 94.9) than on everything coming out of Toronto combined.

August 9, 2009 / 20:53

Toronto Mike

I just got confirmation from an insider.

Bookie will be moving to the Evenings to do a "Live in Toronto" type show.

Fearless Fred (who might drop the fearless, we'll see) will take over the drive home slot.

It's a done deal.

August 10, 2009 / 11:44

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. Look at the last two big countdown shows The Edge has done - the top 102 of all time, with "Under the Bridge" by RHCP as #1. (Really? Of All Time?) Then we got the top 200 of the millennium, with "Dani California" (RHCP again) as #1.

This hasn't been a station that cared about new music for a very long time. It hasn't cared about bringing in people who know what's going on, who know music, who actually connect with those of us who care about music. Yes, it's a business and making money is important. But Corus doesn't give a shit about listeners, and they never have.

I don't know why I'm so surprised about all of this, but it's still like driving nails into the coffin. The playlists are stale, the personalities are lacking personality, and management doesn't care as long as advertisers are still signing up.

August 10, 2009 / 11:58

huh

wow Irvine, "E-Town" sure sounds pretty Gangsta! I'll be sure to avoid it.

August 10, 2009 / 12:07

coopy

Edmonton is a terrible city. As a former Torontonian now in Edmonton, I can speak from experience. This city is awful. It's like Hamilton and Rexdale combined into one.

Well, I actually moved out of Edmonton because I couldn't stand the crapiness of the city. I'm about 30 mins out of the city and I couldn't be happier. Except for my weekly adventure into the city to do some shopping. Even then I'll stick to the north end of the city and that's it.

The people here who hate Toronto only hate it because they've never been there.

August 10, 2009 / 13:05

Michele

i have to agree, Bookie is the best they have left (aside from Alan Cross). I want to listen to DJs expressing their opinions on the music and what's happening in and around us. I don't want to hear any more idiots like Dean Blundell going on with his "greater-than-thou" attitude. I always look forward to hearing Bookie on the drive home. It is just going downhill non-stop. No Martin, No Strombo, and now no Bookie. I guess it is no surprise; Alan is probably next; wouldn't be surprised if he leaves on his own.

August 10, 2009 / 14:09

Jason Paris

JOANNE: Bob Marley would be in the "Spirit" of CFNY and was often played in the day (just for the record). I also see no reason why the odd Marley track (or other reggae tracks for that matter) can't be part of CFNY's current playlist.

August 10, 2009 / 14:14

Mike

Fred will do great there I have no doubts about that. People get fired all the time in radio but listening to Fred for years and knowing what a kick ass guy his is off air. He will do great things for The Edge. No matter how much people hate him he's making the big paycheck to voice his opinion on the air in a big market, not a small time blog. I look forward to listening to Fearless Fred on 102.1 The Edge.

LOL, Coopy..so you moved from Toronto to Edmonton..but you hate it. Um, why DID you move there? Was it for the job you couldn't get in Toronto?

And dawg, I grew up in Toronto. I like the city, just I find the city to be full of a bunch of self righteous assholes that believes the world revolves around them. Good to see some of them moving West to get real work. Usually they just petition the government to bail them out.

U should have moved to Calgary dude. That's the real "centre of the universe". And, in the middle of the deepest recession in a lifetime, it's jobless rate is LOWER Than Toronto's in a boom LOL.

And Boon, cut the shit on the Bookie is going to the night shift. I posted that way back. Stop stealing my shit man. I mean, I'm flattered, but I like to represent myself.

BTW Coopy, where your ass living. Millet? LOL. How's the crops doing.

August 10, 2009 / 23:55

coopy

oh Irvine. I actually moved out here to continue my career and experience a new part of the country.

I agree I should have moved to Calgary... you're only 45 mins away from the mountains... the true centre of the universe.

I live north of Edmonton. There's no way I'd live in shitty millet. That's almost as bad as Wetaskiwin.

I hope it won't take TO long to realize how lucky they are to have Fearless Fred - he didn't win the Best Radio Personality under 30 in Canada award for no reason. The guy is witty, funny, and original....nobody likes change but in a few months you guys will have forgotten who Bookie is.

August 12, 2009 / 16:37

WOW.....I heard you guys in TO whine alot but this is ridiculous!! YOU haven't even heard Fred yet! I must admit, when I first moved to Edmonton I didn't listen to the Bear. BUT once I got a taste for it......that's ALL I listen to. AND FRED, is probably the main reason. He's no doubt going to win you all over. He's an awesome dj and I'm pissed that he left. Good Luck Fearless, I'll be listening to ya online when ever I can!!!!!

August 12, 2009 / 21:50

Bookie is a bumbling idiot.....good riddance. Now they just need to get rid of Adam and I'd be really happy. When he's talking I'd prefer dead air....it would be much less annoying!

found the answer to my own question...

"There is a $30.00 submission fee per station. This fee allows for submissions to Radio Station of the Year, Music Director of the Year, Program Director of the Year, On-Air Talent of the Year and Promotion of the Year."

sure, it's only $30, but some stations have no money to spend, so they can't even afford to nominate their announcers

eDGED wHAT?

Heard "fearless" fred today during the nooner, sounds like another douche bag heading to what has become a douche bag station... Once Alan Cross moved on the whole station went down the crapper... its like they have one cd that repeats every 3 hours... how many time can you hear the same songs in a day with lame-o's like this fred clown in between? and by the way I heard him in Edmonton and he was a douche there too...

It's time to get something totally new on the Toronto airwaves...

Fred is a self-deprecating dummy.

Thanks for the laugh, Irvine...You sound like a typical loser from out west. The funniest parts of your whiny, pathethic rant were 'His girly white ass wouldn't last 10 minutes in E-Town' and 'Wouldn't last 20 minutes on 97th & Jasper'...Wow, you are so GANGSTA...LOL...I've listed to Fearless Fred before - the fact that you think he's good speaks volumes about your taste, muffin.

Wow! The Edge is sure popular even to those who don't like the station. I miss Streek, Taylor and Strombo but I do think that Fred is going to fit in just fine. Sounds like a good guy! Love the morning show but I wish Josie didn't have to play the 90's stuff! Oh and peace to all Canadians out there...why can't we all just get along? :D

Having had a few days to listen to him, man Fred is awful. I wasn't a big Bookie fan, but I honestly can't listen to this guy.

That whole "talk like I'm dumber than I actually am" thing just drives me nuts. Fred sucks, Josie sucks, guess I'm stuck with DBS in the early morning and whoever is doing the late night.

For real...this Fred dude is the final nail in the Edge coffin. He's horrible. Everything that CFNY used to be against. After listening to him this week I, no word of a lie, went out and bought a new car stereo with iPod ins so I didn't have to listen to the radio anymore. RIP Edge.

OK I heard Fearless Fred for 5 minutes and I thought he was annoying from first impression..For me, I think I'm just so disgusted about Martin being let go of that station, that I wont listen anymore regardless of who they try to get on there.. thinking that replacing martin go would gain them more listeners? We should boycott and get them off the air...anyways I read on George Strombo's website that he is "thinking it's time for a new Toronto FM". That is just what we need, he should definitely get on that!

August 22, 2009 / 18:07

I realize all you toronto folk are mourning the loss of bookie. You're angry that your old drive time buddy is no longer there and much like the child of a divorced couple you don't want to accept your mom's new boyfriend, but give Fred a chance. In my opinion he is the best there is at what he does. And unlike many a radio jock in this country fred is the same guy off air that he is on air. He is always willing to help out anyone looking to break into radio, and in this age of cookie cutter radio announcers his delivery is something fresh and actually entertaining to listen to on your drive home. I hope that once the painful memory of losing bookie fades from your minds you will be willing to admit the fact that Fred kicks ass. Just because Alberta had him first, doesn't mean you have to hate him by default. So enjoy Fred. If for no other reason then the capital of Alberta misses him during their afternoon drive.

August 22, 2009 / 19:50

Swegin!

Jesus...parlan, are you kidding me? "Just because Alberta had him first, doesn't mean you have to hate him by default." So...you're suggesting it's likely the only reason the posters above dislike Fred is because he's from Alberta? Well, I guess the jig is up! That's totally what we do here in Toronto...sit around and hate Alberta.

Fred's just annoying...kind of like a really bad Gerry Dee - and he's bad enough to begin with.

I've never cared for Bookie either, but I bet you Fred didn't have Bookie's Free New Music Night at the Horseshoe, the Indy Hour or anything approaching the impact on the local music scene that Bookie had on the infinitely larger and more diverse music scene here.

I just can't listen anymore. The Edge lost what little soul and conscience it had left with the departure of Mr. Taylor and Mr. Streek. Barry Taylor was my boy on 102.1. He's a good dude and I hope he's doing well.

P.S. Adam Rickard is a total douche.

Actually Swegin, if you read the first half of my post you might have noticed me stating my philosophy that many people are bitter over losing bookie on their drive, and are not yet willing to give fred a chance. The last chunk applied to the jackasses in toronto who do hate alberta for being alberta. much like the jackasses in alberta who hate toronto for being toronto. lets face it, its a rivalry that has made our nation the great place it is.

Fearless Fred is BRUTAL!!!!! This guy is the opposite of funny. Now, that whole opposite thing may have worked for Costanza, but this guy SUCKS!!!! "I'm gonna give you a prize because I like your pants." How is that funny? And he keeps using it. Sounds like the solo mobile Douche Weasle. If it's him, then I rest my case. Put Darren on in the afternoons for f-sakes!!!!!

yeah... I can't stand Fearless Fred. He thinks he's 16 and funny. It's painful to listen to him. I wasn't ever a big fan of Bookie, but now I just want him back for my drive home!

Fred is ignorant and obnoxious.

I used to love 102... now I can’t listen to it. The morning show is good, Josie is fine and Fearless Fred says the dumbest things, its really not funny at all.... at least change the name..Fearless? what is this the 1960's? are DJ's still giving themselves nick names.... Jason Barr was smart enough to get rid of the whole Danger Boy thing.... Bookie was better then Fred but it takes him 5 mins. to get through a sentence. Berry Taylor was the best guy they had why would they get rid of him? The music they play and the DJ's they have today has ruined this station.....107.1, 97.7, 107.9 are good alternatives but can’t replace what the edge once was

ever since fearless fred has come to the edge it has gone down worse than it was..he is annoying and rambles on about nothing half the time...i think he may be a window licker..talking to listeners about stupidness..we miss barry taylor he had insight into bands..knew music...this guy knows about weed...maybe...streeker and taylor gone...next is bookie and who alan cross...maybe the balloon boys dad will make an appearance...edge 102 sucks now

October 20, 2009 / 23:34

Dave

All I have to say, being in Edmonton myself, is... Thank God he's gone! He's your problem now. Hes a no talent hack who poluted the airways and me turn my radio to another station or off whenever I heard his annoying whiny voice. He is NOT a great radio personality as some people may tell you. Basically he is a great personality ONLY if you are a bigoted redneck with the IQ of a 5 year old and about the attention span of a Kitten with ADD. Hes part in parcel of the canned media plaguing our airways, and CNN and Fox news have more credbility and entertainment value than this guy ever will.

Good luck with him. I was from Vancouver originally, and I think I recal him being on a now defunct radio station there, and just as annoying. I am not 100% sure of this, but if I am right, it means the Yokel has been chased now, clean across the country by people who just dont want to hear him.

I can't stand Fearless Fred, I vow not to listen to the Edge during my drive home. Fred tries way too hard to be funny but really he is just annoying. Very annoying. Jokes require punch lines in order to be humourous, so stop trying to be cute with the childish, non-sensical, impotent, cynical ramblings.

December 4, 2009 / 15:13

How can they still call themselves 'The Edge?' when they replace actual music people with some frat-boy tool from Alberta? There's nothing cutting edge about the station anymore. All of the DJs (save Bookman) are annoying posers.

Heard 'Fearless Fred' the other day when I tuned into CFNY.
This is the guy that is replacing Dave Bookman??? This guy??? You've got to be kidding. This guy is a hoser!! A bumpkin and he sounds like it.

What gives???

Oh god Fearless Fred is terrible! Not funny at all and tries way too hard to be. I miss Martin Streek and Barry and Strombo, they made the station better. At least with Bookie you would learn something about music that you didn't know. The indie hour was amazing! I can't listen anymore and I've switched to listening to a radio station on my iPhone and trust me it's a million times better and plays way better music! Darrin and Alan and Bookie seem to be the only ones that care about music and the listeners! maybe they should just fire everyone and hire a ton of other people like what they did in the '70s I think. The edge is not cutting edge anymore. In the '70s they were the first mainstream radio station to play good alternative music. Now the playlist is stale, they play the same songs all the time. No variety at all. There's no indie bands or electronic bands that are changing things. It's just boring crap and Fearless Fred just makes things worst with his "dumb things down" way of doing things. He must be really dumb. He plays some pretty good music though but only rarely. I still really hate listening to him and I have stopped listening to edge 102 completely almost. Kinda sucks cause I never know about shows anymore unless I pick up the NOW magazine. Barry will be missed and also punkorama. They brought something great to Canadian music. I agree that Adam needs to go. He used to be good on the all request breakfast but I really can't stand him anymore. I can't stand anyone anymore. Ross Winters needs to be fired he's only making everything go wrong. I think everyone should complain to Corus to fire Ross Winters maybe they'll actually fire him and the Edge will be better. Don Mitchell is not that bad because he replies to emails but apparently he's the one that got Barry and Martin fired. Not sure about Martin though, might have been Ross Winters. god the Edge is such a shitty station now, I think they need to do the surveys again, it really helped make the Edge a better station I think. But I'm not gonna listen to the Edge anymore unless they play music worth listening to and have better music programming. Also I hate the dean blundell show, they play shitty music and I never feel like waking up with their show ughh. I wish it would be from 7-9am so that I could get up right at 7am or 6am for fear of having to listen to them! I wish Bookie could do mornings it would be much better! Adam could even do it with him and Darrin too! but the Edge is so shitty now and it really sucks they don't care about anything we have to say. I hate that, who are they without the listeners? nothing. And although the Edge used to be groundbreaking, firing Martin and Barry was the worst thing they could do. They could have advertised in the subway (TTC) again like back in the day. would have got the word out to everyone. but whatever I wish them the best cause some of them have influenced my life so much but it's too hard to continue supporting them any longer.

August 15, 2010 / 21:06

someone

sorry I didn't mean the music programming cause I think what Ross Winters is doing (program director) is much worse than what Don Mitchell is doing (music director). Ross Winters is making the station boring although the music is still pretty bad and rehashed. They don't play the good songs by amazing bands, they play the most mainstream rock songs ever. Nothing really alternative like Bjork or PJ Harvey and nothing really indie rock anymore. They don't dig deep to find the best songs today. I think they should bring back the Mod Club radio again. It was awesome. It's the UK Underground thing with DJ MRK. The Edge is so unoriginal now that they need to play a show from KROQ. How embarrassing. but I'll keep complaining to Don Mitchell and Ross Winters and hopefully something will be done. I'll make sure I complain to Corus so that they can fire the idiot that is Ross Winters ughhhh!

I like how when you google "Fearless Fred Douchebag" this is one of the first hits. This kid has a horrible voice, I can't turn on the radio in the afternoons anymore.

I feel disappointed that such a great radio station has lost so much self-respect over the past few years. Here's the checklist:

-Canceled the Stroumbo show. aka Biggest Canadian Star (?)
-Firing good personalities and replacing with weirdo hipsters.
-Martin Streek. 'Nuff said.
-A majority of the playlist is "drunk microphone" songs that you can't even understand.
-Sugar Beach. WTF?

The morning show does some pretty off-key things too. Poking the mentally handicapped and the homeless, adult entertainer guests, etc. .. To be honest the Blundell show is one of the only legs left. Is there a word that means both love and hate? I bet the Germans have one.

I quit listening to The Edge on my drive home from work because I can't stand Fearless Fred.

Irvine, grow up. You talk about how whiny people from Toronto are but you've spent a considerable amount of time just complaining.

I'm sure you're the toughest guy on the internet.

TO Bites

Can't say I was a fan of Fred here in Edmonton, but gawd TO, get over yourselves! I'm in Toronto at least 2 or 3 times a year and I can't WAIT to get back to Edmonton every time. I could care less if anyone can handle 97th and Jasper; I just prefer the down to earth people you can ONLY find the further west you go from TO.

All of you are slow!!!

Well I live in the wonderful E town when Fred left that was the last I listened to testicle radio! Sirius is where it all is now the "wave of the future" if you will. The bonus is that Fred hosts the weekend stint on Teletoon and that works for me. So if all of you would step into the new century then you'll see what I mean. There is a full caliber lineup and if you want your minds to be really expanded listen to Jason Ellis, ex vert skater and friend of Tony Hawk, he will blow you away. By the way I don't care if there is some blog tough guy that thinks I'm some whatever kinda person... Just like I started this short speech it's testicle radio cause that all it sucks!
