Hey Mike,

I believe Irv has returned. Can you confirm it?

May 31, 2013 @ 9:29 AM

@Argie

I can't verify on my end. That IP address 40oz krew used has only been used that once.

But Irvine's not banned... let me know if Dave Williams shows up and I'll move us to Defcon 3.

May 31, 2013 @ 9:36 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - I went back and read a few old Irv posts, and yu're right 40oz Krew sure sounds like him...

May 31, 2013 @ 9:37 AM

Argie

I don't think either should be banned but its obvious but I was just curious as the posting by "krew" screamed Irv all the way.

May 31, 2013 @ 9:38 AM

@Mike and Argie -

Irvine's lurked here ever since he announced his departure. He sometimes can't resist posting under different pseudonyms. Poor fool doesn't realize he sticks out like a sore thumb every time.

Its surprising they give convicts access to the internet.

The remaining 4 teams in the playoffs are the last 4 Stanley Cup champs...apparently the first time that has ever happened. It's going to be a great final. I'm hoping for Pit-Chi final.

May 31, 2013 @ 9:46 AM

Lorne

@Andrew: Got a sound curiosity for you. I've been making dance videos from dress rehearsal footage of my studio's show. Since the camera sound is (naturally) crap, I grabbed a copy of the show CD and synced up to the tracks.

It sounded weird, and that's when I realized that every single track was in mono. Not stereo-as-two-mono-channels, but just s single mixed down mono channel.

I thought it was really weird and produced awful sound. But is there a good technical reason why someone running the soundboard at a theatre would want/need all the music tracks mixed down to mono?

May 31, 2013 @ 9:49 AM

Slurpy

Rob Ford is amazing. He's doing a great job for Toronto.

Everything is fine it's business as usual nothing to see here lalalalalalaala

May 31, 2013 @ 9:49 AM

Al

@Lorne: My guess is either the engineer doesn't know what he/she's doing... or there is something wrong with the equipment like the mixer has a bad channel or the amp has a bad channel and he is being forced to mix everything down to mono.

May 31, 2013 @ 9:54 AM

???

Calling all Rob Ford Crack Video truthers: what's the explanation now? This Jamaican guy joins Doolittle, Donovan and Cook in that they all saw the video - is he a Star plant as well? He said he wanted to make a fake video with a Rob Ford lookalike, would they make a fake video to discredit another fake video?

Jeebus Spiced May is done already!?

I want it to be May and June every month. They're literally breaths of fresh air after our dark gloomy winters.

It's funny though how quickly we take the nicer warmer for granted though. Wednesday someone complained to me about how humid it was, so I stabbed him on principle.

Funny story....

So many read your guest blog entry about the guy at Tim Hortons as if it was written by me.

Rose thought it was me, but didn't think it sounded like something I would do. As she said, I wouldn't care if a guy held the door for me.

My mom thought it was me until you took off your sunglasses. She knows I've never worn a pair of sunglasses a day in my life.

Another commenter was surprised to read I'm a Tim Hortons guy... thought I was more of a Starbucks guy. Truth be known, I'm a McDonald's coffee guy.

Still others think that was me, and I'm told I'm a bit of a hot-head... even a bit of an asshole.

It's done wonders for my rep! Keep 'em coming...

May 31, 2013 @ 10:17 AM

Argie

Mike,

You would have thought the part that said "Published by Ryan G." would have been enough of a clue to them that it wasn't you.....

Besides, the narrator seemed too tough to be you.

After a few hundred entries in a row being from the same author you can understand why some would skip that line and start reading.

As for Ryan G being tougher than me, no argument... When I encounter crazy in a Tim Hortons lineup, I let it be because you never know what crazy will do next.

Cheryl

Maybe the person who posts as Cheryl's trainer is actually Irv. Who knows. Anyway, my trainer does not post here and that's the truth. He does not play shuffleboard. He really does curl, but if you want, just send me an email and I'll give you his contact information. That would be something I can do and you can contact him and he'll tell you he doesn't play shuffleboard.

As I said, the Bruins are going to win the cup. I know this. They are going to beat Pittsburgh and then beat Chicago. I know this and the Bruins will win. Both series will go seven games so hockey will be finished some time in July and then it will just be boring old baseball. Baseball really sucks. I hate it. When asked, I say I like the Diamondbacks because I like Arizona, but I really don't follow them except they are doing better than the Jays. I hope they continue to do better than the Jays.

Have you told him about this blog?

Did he tell you he doesn't like it?

Are you 100% certain he doesn't comment here?

May 31, 2013 @ 11:12 AM

Argie

Mike,

I can also confirm Cheryl's trainer doesn't read your blog. I asked why him but he said he doesn't have the time - due to his latest obsession with playing poker. He's like this serious poker player - even flies to Vegas and Macau once in a while.

Mike/Argie

Well I'm definitely no tough guy, but like a lot of people I can go honey badger if pushed. My actions were more of an attempt to intimidate the guy which could have ended up going one of two ways. He figured I was just some white collar shmo who would back down from his douchebaggery, and the Jedi mind trick was to flick the "this guy might be a nutter" switch in his head which caught him off guard.

Thanks for your comment Argie, and as for my contract with Mike, it's worth it given one of the clauses stipulates all-you-can-eat blow and hookers, usually in that order.

May 31, 2013 @ 11:20 AM

Hey @Mike,

When I started to read Ryan G's entry, something immediately seemed off, style-wise. So I thought to double-check on who the author might be and that's how I figured it out.

@Cheryl Any chance people might just be goofing with you? You know we have a bunch of spirited funsters who post here, right?

Prom night tonight in this neck of the woods - the boys are golfing and the girls are busy doing hair, mani/pedi stuff. As parents of a boy, we thought this would be easy-peasy on the prep front. I'm here to tell ya it ain't true. But it's been interesting - and fun. It'll be wonderful to see all these kids spruced up for a night at the golf club - kids I have known since Kindergarten. Before you know it, they'll all be dropped off at their respective universities and the next chapter will begin for us all.

Kathleen Wynnes should have kept comments to herself concerning Rob Ford. She was playing politics with the controversy. The comments had nothing to do with removing Rod from office. They were meant to solidify the Liberal base in downtown TO who couldn't stand Rob in the first place and wreck as much havoc on Doug Fords provincial ambitions.

You may not like it but Doug Ford was right. Rob doesn't have the luxury of proroguing city council to make the crack video go away. Wynne's government did just that and they made off like bandits.

I was reading today in the news that Philip Seymour Hoffman just recently completed his rehab stint for heroin addiction. I thought WTF?

He always seemed like a normal guy. I have to ask, are there any normal, well balanced, happy people left in Hollywood? It seems all of their lives are filled with drug addiction, failed marriages, and run-ins with the law.

Its ironic that these are the same people who frequently get on their soapbox and try to preach to rest of us what is right and what is wrong. I guess we just have to keep in mind they're just actors and ignore their "sage" advice.

We didn't have one single day this week without Mike Duffy or Rob Ford in the news. Imbeciles who could pass for brothers. Canadian politics really can crawl as low as the goings-on down south.

---

I have to confess that I haven't watched much hockey since the first round. I did want to watch the last Wings-Hawks game but I had a night school exam that hooped that idea. I really have no favourite in this anymore, as long as it is NOT the Bruins. And no, don't try to explain to Cheryl the unspoken prerequisites of being a Habs fan. Cheryl plays her own game.

I haven't put the A/C on yet. Even though this is SK, we are still in spring. It hasn't turned into a Turkish Bath just yet.

Rob Ford and Mike Duffy do look like brothers. Grossly out of shape men who look like they could drop dead from a heart attack any minute.

I don't put any weight on polls anymore... they're a relic from a time that's passed. Think about the recent US election and the two provincial elections... the polls were very wrong.

And besides, when 50% of those polled don't believe you when you say you don't smoke crack, that doesn't bode well.

And as I've often said, 30% of Ford's faithful will vote for him no matter what. He can lie, smoke crack and be a shitty mayor, but he'll have that 30%.

Breaking news: Mayor Ford is busy the weekend of the gay parade (I purposely omitted the word "pride" as there's nothing to be proud of) as he will be at his family's cottage.

June 2, 2013 @ 9:10 AM

markosaar

There's lots to be proud of for gay people. They've made amazing strides in a few decades with respect to their civil rights. Toronto police were still raiding bathhouses and outing the occupants in the 80s. Now they can marry and adopt children, here at least. But the momentum is there through most of North America.

But I wouldn't have expected any less of you. I'm more depressed that something like this is still controversial:

Rob Ford will skip the Pride parade again this year?

Shocking!!!

June 2, 2013 @ 10:30 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

One more thing worth noting about Rob Ford skipping the Pride parade is that it exposes yet another Rob Ford lie.

Ford says he can't attend Pride because of family tradition to to go the cottage the Canada Day long weekend. He says he would never break that tradition and that he never has.

But he did break the tradition at least once in recent years: during the 2010 election campaign, when he marched in a Canada Day parade in East York.

June 2, 2013 @ 10:34 AM

Corey

@markosaar -

The Rob Ford/Pride Parade is probably the least controversial issue of his time as Mayor, to me at least. I couldn't care less if he attends or not. The "amazing strides" you mention I chalk up simply to us evolving as a society (and pardon me if I don't celebrate the bath house "victory"; Yay! Gay men can get together and have anonymous group sex whenever they please! Fantastic!).
We've moved on. As you said, gay people can marry, and adopt kids. Rob Ford's attendance at this parade isn't going to change that. I'm not against the Parade, but it doesn't make me a homophobe if I choose not to attend.

June 2, 2013 @ 11:56 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Corey

You're absolutely right, not attending the parade does not make you a homophobe.

But you're not the mayor of Toronto. Barbara Hall attended, Mel Lastman attended, David Miller attended and Rob Ford should attend.

And it's pretty clear to me that Rob Ford is a homophobe.

Ford, a conservative and an opponent of same-sex marriage, made several inflammatory comments about the city’s gay community as a city councillor. He called it “disgusting” that council awarded a grant to a group making a video about coming out, said only drug users and gay people get AIDS, and once wondered aloud whether transgender means “a guy dressed up like a girl or a girl dressed up like a guy.” He was denounced again in May for appearing to use an anti-gay slur to describe Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in the video that appears to show him smoking crack cocaine.
June 2, 2013 @ 12:01 PM

Argie

Currently its not a crime to be "homophobic". Of course that could change with gay activists doing their best to change and shape society the way they feel it should be.

Like Corey I couldn't care less either, but I must admit its fun to see people like Mike work themselves into a lather by Ford not attending the parade. If I was gay, I still wouldn't care - in fact I would probably not want him there. He would just be another hypocritical politician if he did show up.

June 2, 2013 @ 12:56 PM

james

Personally I don't get the gay pride thing nowadays. Sure, when it started there was probably a good reason for it. I'm not objecting to that reason, before someone goes all political correctness on me. But I mean come on. There's things what go on at these parades these days that'd be indecent exposure on any other day. If I were gay, I'd actually be embarrassed to be asociated with one of these things. Although, perhaps not as embarrassed as if I were living in a city that not only hosted the thing but expected me to pay for it whether I agree with it or not.

June 2, 2013 @ 2:16 PM

james

@Cheryl: Oh, thank god. For a while I actually thought you were someone I knew. Had me just a teeny tiny bit worried for a while. Posting your email confirms I need only kick back and be distantly amused. Don't mind if I do.

June 2, 2013 @ 2:18 PM

4x4 Time

Just curious, why SHOULD Ford participate in the parade? Does he participate in every other parade the city has or funds?
I agree with Argie, I would think the gay community would not want him to show up anyway and will show their true feelings about him on Election Day...

June 2, 2013 @ 2:24 PM

andrew

Rob Ford is Santa in the Santa Clause parade.

June 2, 2013 @ 4:44 PM

Corey

@Mike - those Mayors (especially Lastman) bowed to pressure from what I consider to be a special interest group, and not actually representative of the larger homosexual community. This particular segment wants to not only hold a parade that frequently crosses boundaries of social mores, but wants everyone else to endorse it. If I was Mayor, I wouldn't want to be seen at a parade where there's a possibility children are going to witness a man blowing his "friend".
They have a very successful Pride week and get a free pass to hold a parade that under normal circumstances wouldn't be allowed. Why can't it be left at that?

June 2, 2013 @ 5:50 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Corey et al

Mayor Ford has never attending anything Pride related and it's gone on fine without him. I just think it's unfortunate that he doesn't embrace this amazing event.

An event, by the way, I wouldn't hesitate to take my kids to.

June 2, 2013 @ 6:38 PM

Anonymous

An interesting question would be whether the mayor was using a publicly funded crack pipe? He has consistently fought against harm reduction programs. In 2011, in voting against provincial grant money going towards city HIV prevention programs the mayor commented, “If you're not doing needles and you're not gay, you won't get AIDS probably". So yes, he's a hypocrite but if the man uses drugs he's no worse than the rest of us.

1) Why is it "amazing", any more than the Santa Claus parade?

2) Ford has attended what I believe to be a more symbolically relevant event than Pride Week. Any kudos for that?

@Mike

Ford has attended the flag raising two years in a row.
You call it an amazing event, I call it a public display of pornography.
And no I am not homophobic.

It's nice the Ford attended that flag raising, but it would be even nicer if he'd stop calling homosexuals "fags".

And that flag raising had nothing to do with Pride week.

Pride week, culminating with the big parade, is a big event in this city... a chance for a long maligned and oppressed group to celebrate their acceptance. The Santa Claus parade is fun, but it celebrates a fictional character. There's no comparison between the two events.

@Speysidephil

That's absolutely false.

Rob Ford skipped the Pride flag-raising, and every other event in the 10-day festival, in both 2011 and 2012.

June 2, 2013 @ 7:31 PM

Cheryl

Enough about Rob Ford already. Anyway, I really heard enough about him. No more. Who cares if he goes to the parade or not. I don't.

Yes, the Bruins are going to win the cup. Crosby is a crybaby. Rask is a great goalie and he can shut the Pens out yet again. You'll see. I told you the Hawks will beat the Kings. The Bruins will beat the Pens, and then the Bruins will beat the Hawks. You'll see. It will happen. Pittsburgh is not that good. They won't win.

Well, so nobody wants to contact my trainer. It's okay if you don't want to contact him, but you don't know him so don't go saying you're my trainer when you're not.

Mike,

Just curious: Have you ever attended this parade - and God forbid, with your kids?

June 2, 2013 @ 8:02 PM

Corey

@Mike - and there you have it. They guy attends an event, goes on record and speaks out publicly against homophobia and bullying, but that's not enough for you because he allegedly used the word "fag" when he was allegedly stoned. Proof he can't win. If he attends this years Pride flag raising, is it going to change your opinion of him by one iota?

I don't buy that the majority of homosexuals feel that celebrating their acceptance requires them to engage in public nudity and more extreme displays. I'm personally disappointed that as a society we still need to identify ourselves by what gender we prefer to f@&k. I'm not interested. Don't know why it's so fascinating to so many others.

"I'm personally disappointed that as a society we still need to identify ourselves by what gender we prefer to f@&k".

Spoken like a true heterosexual! Pride parades take place around the world to commemorate the Stonewall riots. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots

Prior to 1969, gay sex was illegal in this country. It is because we historically oppressed a people that this identification exists.

@Argie

I used to live at 30 Charles Street West. So yes, I've been to a few Pride parades and Dyke marches.

I haven't gone with the kids but I wouldn't hesitate to do so. In fact, if it fits in my schedule, we might do that this year.

June 2, 2013 @ 8:20 PM

@Mike

Like I said above. While I have absolutely no doubt there were good reasons for doing things like the pride parade when it all started, even you have to admit if even half what went on during that parade happened, say, this afternoon, there'd be a lot fewer free cots in Toronto's jails--at least temporarily. You want to cellebrate the LGBT lifestyle? Hell, even have a parade for it? I'm all for that. I wouldn't go, not even if I was mayor of Toronto, but go nuts. But two things, right quick.

First, if you want this parade, and if the people who want an excuse to walk the route naked want this parade, then it's the people who want to either participate or watch that should bare the costs. If I'm a Toronto resident, I'm not getting anywhere near my money's worth paying for a bunch of people to escentially walk around downtown naked. That's like expecting residents of Ottawa to take the HST hit on the nose so Toronto can fund its transit system upgrades.

Secondly, as was already said here by others. You've already decided Ford's a homophobe. Whether or not that's true, it's true to you. So why would you, having already decided Ford's a homophobe, want to see him anywhere near anything whatsoever to do with pride week? In your mind, even if he did show up, it wouldn't be remotely sincere, on account--again, according to what's apparently your mindset--of he's a homophobe. Am I missing something?

June 2, 2013 @ 11:33 PM

Corey

@james - well said.
@Mike - I'm well aware of the Stonewall riots. I don't see why that invalidates my opinion though. If the gay community wants to continue to identify solely by sex, in an age where they have all of the same rights as everyone else, that's their prerogative. Like I said, I'm not against the parade. This was actually about Ford's refusal to attend, remember?

James sums up my thoughts perfectly - you kind of steered this away from why you're so disappointed Ford won't attend, when you've already decided he's a homophobe despite his involvement in gay-positive events.

@ Mike - I think we can all agree if I lean either way, it's to the left...That being said, I think the pride parade is no longer what it was intended to be, and does come off as a bunch of people walking around naked and tripped out on every drug imaginable, celebrating their promiscuity...I wouldn't take my kid within 50 km of the pride parade.

There are many thing's Rob Ford does that amuse/irritate/disgust me, but not attending pride isn't one of them...

On a somewhat related topic, my wife and I watched an episode of Doc Zone on Friday called, "Sext up kids" which addressed the impact of our hyper-specialized society on kids. Truly sad and disturbing (and partially why Im not a big fan of bringing the kids to the Pride parade). Seems that kids just can't be kids anymore. To every parent that thinks their kids are the exception, I would encourage you to watch this. It's available online. Here's the description:
http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episode/sext-up-kids.html

I found this persons comment to be very poignant:
"I am a kindergarten teacher and I am seeing signs of this with children as young as 4. "Toilet talk" or humor has always been there. Now, the talk is more sexualized. It is deeply disturbing. If parents heard what I hear in a day they would be reduced to tears. I will tune in tonight."

June 3, 2013 @ 8:13 AM

Arrrghh! Auto-correct!!! That should have read "hyper-sexualized", not "hyper-specialized".

June 3, 2013 @ 8:15 AM

@ Corey - Oh my God you are right!!! I took my son to a fair at his school last Thursday and the DJ is playing songs like "I'm Sexy and I Know it" and little girls in my son's class (so 5 year olds!!!) are dancing like the girls in the videos. The worst part is their mothers were all standing around cheering them on. I even heard one mother say "oooh...look at my little sexy girl"

....so glad I had a boy...

June 3, 2013 @ 8:19 AM

Corey

@phil -
Unfortunately, boys have access to every flavour of porn available now, and its shaping their expectations of how girls should engage in, and putting incredible pressure on the girls to comply. One researcher in the documentary points out that "anal is the new oral", and this is happening at younger and younger ages. How terrible to think about 12 and 13 year old kids to feel they have to engage in this activity. It's a long way away from finding a stash of your Dads playboy mags.

In keeping with this theme of the sexualisation of kids, I had a few minutes to kill this morning before heading into work so I clicked on the TV. I stupidly turned it to CBC Newsworld.

The news reader/host was discussing the topic of bullying in schools. She then threw it over to another reporter who went on about teen bullying. He main focus was of "the bullying of gay students". He discussed the suicide of that red head teen in Ottawa (the son of a councillor). What this person (who was clearly gay) didn't mention was that kids being bullied because they're gay is a tiny percentage. The most popular reasons for bullying are, economic status, how well the kids are doing academically, how "un cool" they dress, physical appearance and so on. Yet his entire focus was the establishment of these "rainbow' or gay-straight alliance clubs. The only focus should be on kids respecting other kids and not being little shits who bully other kids.

BTW, does the CBC have a hard policy of only hiring gay white males and cute Asian women?

June 3, 2013 @ 9:28 AM

@ Corey - you are right of course. And I'm sure this is my hang up, but I would rather have to explain to my son why he can't act like that, than try to explain to a daughter why boys act like that, why the girls who accommodate get all the attention, but why she shouldn't...it's unfair to do to our daughters, and for that reason, I'm glad I don't have one.

I'm almost certain I saw a girl on my street who I know is 13 performing oral an a boy in the park...if that had been my daughter, the boy in question probably wouldn't be walking right now.....

At 13, I was ecstatic that a girl let me kiss her...oral just wasn't even on my radar yet...

Well, looking forward to the game tonight. Bruins will win. Rask is a great goalie. He can shut the Pens out. Remember last game. Believe me, trust me. The Bruins will win the cup.

June 3, 2013 @ 11:14 AM

Argie

I actually believe Cheryl - not sure about the "trust" part though. Boston is not the most talented team in the playoffs but as we've seen in the past, the most talented team doesn't always win the cup.

I wish that was the case but the toughest, grittiest team with the most pests seems to win the cup. With guys like Chara, Lucic and Marchand, they annoy and frustrate the hell out of their opposition. I wouldn't at all be surprise if they won it.

So Kensington Market doesn't want a WalMart in their neighbourhood.
It would spoil their pristine atmosphere.
Exactly why the rest of the GTA hates Toronto.
And Adam Vaughn comes back from a taxpayer funded junket in Vancouver and says that the rest of Canada is a joke because of Mayor Ford.
No, dear Adam, the rest of Canada has always thought Toronto is a joke.

@Speysidephil -

I live in Mississauga and I don't hate Toronto at all. When I'm looking for something to do, it's not downtown Mississauga I head to (wherever that is). It's Toronto. Kensington Market doesn't have a "pristine" atmosphere, but it does still have a bit of uniqueness left. Does every block in every town need to have a Walmart? A Home Depot, Futureshop, Starbucks, Loblaws, McDonald's and a Kelsey's? The residents around there should fight against it. I hope they suceed.

June 4, 2013 @ 10:02 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Corey - I beleive "downtown" mississauga is pretty much square 1.....c'mon there's lots to do there....

June 5, 2013 @ 8:46 AM

Yes, I guess I'm holding the fort. Just be prepared for your precious Pens to lose. They will. They don't have a good goalie. That doesn't help things. Rask is a great goalie on the Bruins. Bruins will win. Of course they will.
