Labour Day Long Weekend Open Mike

Open MikeI graduated from University in '98. That's 14 years ago, but still I feel dread during Labour Day long weekend. I'm wired to prepare myself for back to school, despite the fact I haven't had to go back to school in well over a decade.

Fuck, as a big Clint Eastwood fan, this broke my heart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DGl-4gByV4

So sad...

I ignored all of the RNC. It's like those corporate brainwashing retreats where they spew one thick slice of bullshit after another. The Washington Post tells me they've taken lying to a whole new level this year.

I caught the gist of the Clint Eastwood speech on Twitter, and it sounds like incoherent rambling from a director I truly admire. It sounds like this:

My recommendation for all Clint Eastwood fans is to never, ever watch that YouTube clip you linked to.

I recorded the first episode this week and will record episode 2 on Tuesday. I was going to wait until after Labour Day to promote it... probably Tuesday.

It was fun... I learnt a lot from the first episode. I hope everyone will give it a listen and provide feedback when I share it next week.

I am a huge Clint fan. His westerns are very important to me. They are a big connection for me and my Dad.
So, I will not watch that clip of Clint. I do not want him portrayed in any way other than what I've seen before.

The El Mo opened in 1850 as a haven for escaped slaves.

If that's not worth revitalizing, what is?

Oh to have seen Hendrix there!

Grocery Gateway screwed up again. They didni't bring a couple items. They weren't that important, but the thing is that I hardly ever get a perfect order. Anyway, they don't listen. I complain, but nothing gets done. There are always out of stock items except the last order before this one was perfect. One perfect order in umpteen million. Anyway, the hockey talks broke off again. I think it's about time we have a baseball lockout. Why oh why can't baseball be locked out. Baseball is so boring. Let's jsut lock them out for five seasons straight. I would be so happy.

Any Classic Music lovers from the 60-70's should be listening to Q107 this weekend for their top 500 song countdown.

I'm in heaven.

Not every comment has to be a gem, just like not every entry has to be a nugget of joy.

Cheryl's comments are welcome here. I even talk about her comments on my podcast.

@ Mike

Either Comfortably Numb (my favorite song EVER), Hey Jude, Stairway To Heaven or last choice A Day In The Life.

All 3 songs will be in the top 5 or 6 for sure!!

August 31, 2012 @ 5:57 PM

CQ

Which will be younger:
The original broadcast date of this weekend's The Lawrence Welk Show replay, (as scheduled twice on PBS Buffalo), or
Q107's number one song in its top 500 countdown (and maybe, also, the average age for its top 20)?

Every few months we go through this. Some people attack Cheryl, she threatens to leave and Toronto Mike tries to make the peace.

Let's not worry about what Cheryl writes or doesn't write. This is a free space and I like it here because the trolls are minimal.

Can't we all just get along?

Throw in a song from Queen and another from Bad Company and that'll round out the top five songs.

@Toronto Mike

Looking forward to your podcast. Count me in as a listener, and I'll offer whatever feedback I can.

@Bob Loblaw

I have no issues with Cheryl. The fun part of Open Mike is to write about the world we live in. Cheryl is a huge hockey nut, so good for her. And if I had to rely on someone else to do my groceries, and wonder what may or may not show up, I'd get a little frustrated too.

miscellaneous...

My allergies have started, and the crop dust is hammering me. To say I have sneezed 75 times today wouldn't be far from the truth. I suffered very badly in the 80s to early 90s, then they went away (lived in Toronto much of the time, so no change in locale), bugged me a bit in Sweden but not too bad, and now the last five years on the prairies, it seems to be getting worse every year.

Hey, CFL time! It's the Labour Day classic and then the Banjo Bowl. Let's see which of the two can crawl out from the basement. If the Riders can't get up for these two games, then there really is something wrong.

When does voting end? I just voted for Cheek.

Every year I write about this vote and try to get Tom Cheek in the hall, and every year he's come up short. I'm thinking if I don't write about it this year he'll get in.

You got some good high praise from the H&F crew on your podcast- pressure to be good! Anxious to hear. How 'bout dragging Kelly in? I[m hoping she gets the podcast bug too. Looking forward to the whole H&F network.

Cheryl on Toronto Mike reminds me of Cherri, and Corky back on The Big Show (fan 590, Gord Stelllick), or Allan Expressway , or Raptorized John. They all helped make the show indirectly with their direct participation.
Go Cheryl!

This is it. I need Grocery Gateway. If I didn't need them, I would be rid of them in a heartbeat just like Bell. I kept Bell too long, but glad I got rid of them because Primus is a lot better for a lot less money. Grocery Gateway doesn't send me a perfect order very often. As for the oldies, hope there is some Bob Seger on there as well as some Trooper and Stampeders. Anyway, Bob Seger is millions of times better than Bruce Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen sounds like he has a pain in his belly all the time, yuck. Bob Seger has a beautiful voice. His slow songs are the best. Wouldn't it be cool if this Bob Seger collection came out that was all his slow songs, hits or not. That would be so cool.

I haven't listened to Q107 in months, but all those top 500 countdowns are all the same for the most part, especially the top 20.

I actually haven't listened to any radio really over the past 2 or 3 months. I guess I just kinda got bored of it. Haven't really found anything good.

@Toronto Mike: I'm flattered, but you better find some better material, no matter how brief it is LOL. Kelly would be great, never really heard her talent until she teamed up with H&F, she can hold her own when she wants to.

@Jason: Haven't listened to Q107 in a long time, does Stairway to Heaven still win top spot in the countdown, always did when I listened.

@Cheryl: Maybe create a blog or facebook page and see what other Grocery Gateway customers are experiencing, you might be able to apply a little social media pressure.

@Rick C: I don't know because like I said above, I haven't listened to Q107 in months, but probably because it usually does.
Used to love Q107 when they played new and classic rock. But when they switched to all classic rock, I got bored of it. I still tune in once in a while but not much has changed.

Who was Corky on the Big Show? I remember Stellick's afternoon slot with Barb, lunch bag letdown, and sending him a "Gmail" (Gord Mail) long before there was a Gmail, but Corky is gone from my memory.

Cheryl I agre 100% that Seger is a million times better than Bruce.
Good Call.

September 1, 2012 @ 3:19 PM

Cheryl

Good, someone agrees with me. Bob Seger is a million times better. As I said, Bruce Springsteen sounds like he has a pain in his belly. I remember one day I had the raido on. Bruce Springsteen was singing and my dad said that he sounds like he has a pain in his belly so I agree with him, but then again my dad doesn't like any rock. He likes opera and classical.

September 1, 2012 @ 5:56 PM

@ Cheryl

Agree also. Seger's best song for me was Fire Lake.

I had free tiks to see Springsteen this week & gave them up as I cannot stand him.

Stolen joke: CBC Canada is making an adaptation of Breaking Bad. In this version Walt gets cancer and gets high quality healthcare for 5 seasons.

He was just a regular caller/listener. Cheri always called in about the Jays I think, regardless what the topic was. I might have the nickname wrong, but I think it was Corky.

September 1, 2012 @ 7:51 PM

Blind Dave

@Anon&on

Thanks for the info. If they were a regular caller, that's why I probably didn't remember them. Some of the regulars were reasonably intelligent, and others were absolutely brutal.

Back in the 90s, I usually flipped between The Fan and the classic rock station out of Hamilton - Y95. They had a very good morning show there with Jeff Lumby. I'm glad to see Jeff is still bouncing around getting work. He's one of the more talented voices out there.

After seeing the Blue Jays live since they have been in the league, I am guessing maybe a 100 times, yesterday afternoon, I got my first foul ball! It hit the stairs about 20 feet in front of me and kicked left, right to me, one handed catch. I looked around and gave it to a little girl in a Jays shirt and cap with a glove who was with her Dad. Best part, her Dad bought me a beer!

September 2, 2012 @ 8:43 AM

Cheryl

Yes, Fire Lake is a great song. My all time favourite Bob Seger song though is Jody Girl. I know, it's not a big hit, but it's a great song. No Man's Land is a great song as well as Til It Shines or The Famous Final Scene. John Mellencamp is a great rock singer as well. To MG Wherever she may be is a Mellencamp favourite although it never was a hit. Weakest Moments is great as well as Taxi Dancer. Good I'm nnot the only Springsteen hater.

I've just giving up with Q107.
Top 500 songs of all time & Won't Get Fooled Again rated as 192, probably the best song by the Who. When Andy Frost introduced this song he even said top 15 or 10 last few years - WOW.

Might Q is now the LESSER Q.

Cheryl: Is Grocery Gateway your only source for groceries? No neighbors that would be willing to shop for you? This is a big city; there must be some community services that could help! Any ideas people???

September 3, 2012 @ 10:40 AM

Cheryl

I didn't go to the Public Enemy show. I don't think I missed much. I wouldn't like them probably.

As I said, Grocery Gateway is the only place that delivers. That's what it is. Anyway, I just don't know why they keep running out of one item or another. They used to be good like a long time ago, if something was out of stock, it would clearly be marked as out of stock. Now I keep getting promised that everything will be in one store again. I'll believe it when I see it.

September 3, 2012 @ 4:23 PM

@ Cheryl - the above comment was a good idea...start up a facebook page or something to reach out to other grocery gateway users and see if others are having the same problem you are...if so, a collective complaint might get soething changed.
