Leafs Win! Habs Lose! I'm Full!

leafsI've just returned from the ACC. It was opening night, and that means the 48th Highlanders.

Leafs vs. Habs

I've missed Leafs hockey, and there's nothing like the Leafs and Habs to open the season.

Leafs vs. Habs

There was no anthem singer on this night. The 19,000+ joining me at the ACC did the honours.

Leafs vs. Habs

Every time I'm in these seats, I'm blown away by how close to the ice we are. Growing up, every game I watched at Maple Leaf Gardens was from the Greys. I still can't believe I get to see games from the 3rd row. Thanks, Ford Canada! Sorry about the hefty food bill...

Leafs vs. Habs

The game itself was a lot of fun, after a slow start to the first period. Our Leafs shutout the hateful Habs 2-0 thanks to goals by Lombardi and Phaneuf. You couldn't ask for much more.

Leafs vs. Habs

The first star was obvious. If Optimus Reim plays like this every night, playoff hockey will be back in this town.

One down, 81 more to go...

The parade has been planned!

How many Leafs games has Ford Canada comp'd you for? Do Raptors and Marlie games even count? I thought it was Disney that treated you once before to a luxury box visit.
(And no, I am not being cranky at Two in the Morning).

LOL! I love CQ and his/her desire for free shit.

The scene on Yonge was fantastic last night, horns, smiles, cheers, champagne. I'm glad I found a spot for my lawn chair for the parade.

October 7, 2011 @ 5:45 AM

Why do you care that Toronto Mike got free tickets CQ?

We should be happy they went to a hard working regular blogger instead of some corporate guy making a million dollars a year.

Good on you, Toronto Mike! Shame on you CQ!

I was there last night as well (not in the 3rd row or anything....) and the atmosphere in the upper bowl was insane. When Lombardi scored that short handed goal, I thought I was going to burst a lung I was screaming so loud....I'm not reserving a spot in the parade yet, but it was a good start.

@Harris....Mike has become one of those corporate guys. Have you been reading his commercials...I mean blog lately?

That's not fair. You can't watch a baseball game without the 7th inning stretch being brought to you by Company A and the pitching change being brought to you by Company B.

Everything has corporate sponsorship... everything.

So if Ford puts me in a couple of cars and Motorola sends over a tablet, is that so bad? 99.9% of entries on this blog weren't brought to you by any corporation.

Other blogs are much, much worse. Trust me.

It was amazing to watch on TV so I can only imagine the atmosphere in the actual building.

Good for you, Mike!

October 7, 2011 @ 9:27 AM

re, Harris: Give out only one or two new car rentals (each summer), and 'A' primo sports ticket - shame on me. Give out seven car rentals in a row, etc. shame on Ford.
Aint they got a loyal customer base of generational repeat purchasers, directions to a Sick Kids hospital, a wall chart of coast to coast to coast Canada, a reach-out program of diversity, or a deserving employee of the recession. That was Opening Night. Toronto vs. Montreal. And free grub!

Darn you Mike, now I'll have to scan the archives myself again (remembering the free camping gear swag, too).

I hate to use such a harsh word on a beautiful Friday morning on a civilized blog, but at the end of the day, we're all whores. It's just a matter of degree.

How did you pay for the computer you're reading this blog on?

We've all got to make a living, and if Mike can monetize this site while providing some interesting content, so be it.

Now I've posted here before I'm not a fan of some of the advertorial type posts, but I just ignore them and move on, or I'll have some fun and post something scathingly sarcastic. And that's the chance the sponsors have to take when they do this sort of thing, because comments here can sway opinions of a product, thereby affecting the overall perception of a brand.

By the way, this comment is brought to you by the fine people at lemonparty.org

I had once received surprise Opening Day tickets for the Blue Jays. I 'earned' them by getting screwed out of a scant hours before gametime cast-off during the season before. (And completely shutout for a number of years beforehand. Didn't even know the "pansy-friendly" company owned season tickets at all).
I paid for my computer by staying on and working an extra couple of months after a layoff notice - for their new team's transitional easement.

Glad to see hockey back. I always get excited when the season starts in October. Unfortunately I can't live or full matches on tv. I watch highlights on Youtube. Here's t a good season and Leafs in 10th place ;)

October 7, 2011 @ 10:24 AM

Did you also get a limo ride to & from the game??

October 7, 2011 @ 1:34 PM

Hey, I enjoy sports and love electronics. I'm delighted Mike got to go to the game, and I look forward to the tablet reviews and such.

There's no way an average guy could bring us this type of content without the freebies. The wallet simply couldn't take it. And it seems to me that while Mike has his opinions, they are FAIR and HONEST opinions and are not swayed by any type of gifts or sponsorship.

October 7, 2011 @ 1:49 PM

Forgot to mention - what did you think of the game, Cheryl?

And that's an honest question. I'm not poking fun, just wondering how you felt about opening night and the season ahead, as you were very much looking forward to it.

October 7, 2011 @ 1:52 PM

Dave brings up a good point...Cheryl, if the score had been reversd your name would be all over this post right now....how did you feel about last nights game??

October 7, 2011 @ 2:54 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Missed the game last night cause I was on a flight from Toronto to Moncton but I heard all about it from my grandfather who's a Leaf fan.
So the Leafs won a game, there's still 81 more to go. At the end of the season, I'm pretty sure the Leafs will find themselves on the golfcourse once again, while my Habs are in the playoffs.

October 7, 2011 @ 3:36 PM

The game last night sucked. My Habs were outshooting them, but then the Leafs win. No good at all. I'm glad there is another Habs fan around. Go Habs.

October 7, 2011 @ 3:46 PM

Mike I have to agree with Sammi. Your blog contains hints about Ford hooking you up. Ask me if I really like reading about some dude gloating about his seats, and thanking a Corporation. Who cares? I dont. I want hockey info, not some lucky @#$% who won his seats, and kisses some more Corp @ss. Get bent dude, PLENTY of fantastic blogs out there, WITHOUT Corporation BS!!!

October 7, 2011 @ 6:31 PM

AMEN Rocker.

Looks like many are questioning your freebies & your gloating.

You are P!$$ing readers off.

October 7, 2011 @ 7:28 PM

Having the crowd as the anthem singer(s) is a great idea. And just think how much money MLSE can save if they don't hire a singer for the remaining games?

The view from way up at the back of Section 310 was great. Watching Phil Kessel made me think of Ron Ellis.... He always seemed to shoot wide, over the top of the net, or have his shot deflected into the crowd.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of all this monetization.

Ford let me test drive cars, but asked for them back. Today I drove my '99 Mazda Protege with 240,000+ KMs on it.

Motorola let me test drive their XOOM, but asked for it back. The courier picked it up yesterday.

RIM will eventually ask for their PlayBook back. It's not mine to keep.

And yes, I get great seats for the Leafs game last night, so clearly I've become an elitist and I've pissed you all off. I guess I can't win, because I can't see myself turning down the invitation to the ACC and I don't see the point of having this blog if I can't write about my experience there.

Oh... and about that monetization. Ford has never given me a penny. No cash has ever found its way to my bank account. Same with Motorola and RIM and everybody else you think is making me rich. The only money I get from this blog, other than some textual links I sell, comes from Google because of my Adsense.

So click a link on your way out. My kids are quite bright, and will want to go to University.

October 7, 2011 @ 11:40 PM

Once again, I think it's great that Mike gets to test drive some freebies. It makes for fun content in his blog. And no, Mike hasn't sold out or gone corporate.

You see, when someone does something nice for me, I was taught to say "thank you". I believe the corporate references are more of a thank you than anything else.

For all of you who complain that Mike thanks Company X for intelligent customer service, kindly remember not to jump on the bandwagon the next time Mike writes about BAD customer service. After all, fair is fair.

I work in retail, and it takes a very thick skin to deal with the general public. Getting a sincere thank you, a personal compliment, or a compliment towards the store, feels pretty darn good and makes up for the ones who are rude without just cause.

The feedback - both the compliments and the appropriate criticism - allow us to be a better store, be better sales people, and give better customer service. And that benefits everyone.

October 8, 2011 @ 11:19 AM

I agree with toronto Mike on this. I have no problems with posts on good seats and stuff like that. It would be better if he cheered for the Habs though. go Habs.
