Darkest Before the Dawn (And Other Such Bullshit)

LeafsArgh, I did it again. On October 16, following the Leafs' 4th win in their first 4 games, I declared it was feeling a little like '93. That was way stupid and way premature.

But that's the problem when you've endured such futility for over half a decade. You start to see what you want to see. Suddenly, Dion Phaneuf is Chris Pronger and Phil Kessel is Sidney Crosby. Hell, Phil Kessel is Han Solo. And Giguere, he's Patrick Roy. That's how it is here in the centre of the universe. We're starving for success and we see it everywhere as mirages and delusions of grandeur.

I believe in being accountable for my actions, so I'll take full blame for that crap I wrote on October 16. A 4-0 start fucked with our expectation levels and messed with our blue and white psyches. We're back to 11th in the conference, pretty much where you'd expect this team to be. Our true hopes and dreams aren't that we enjoy a Stanley Cup parade on Yonge Street this June but that we somehow play over our heads and slip into 8th in the conference.

Now that we're 1-6-3 in our last 10 games, what the hell do we do? Is it time to fire Ron Wilson?

Remember, it's darkest before the dawn. We'll be okay...

Nah...It's time to fire MLSE...if we can. They've done the same thing with the Raptors.

As long as people support a poor product on the ice, they have no incentive to do anything about it- other than raise your ticket price. Again.

Down Goes Brown

The players aren't good enough. The roster needs a rebuild, but we can't rebuild without a first round pick. The GM went all in with a terrible hand and now he needs a miracle on the river to keep from busting out.

There's very little hope. We're probably in for two more years of floundering, then a new management team will come in and try a true rebuild if MLSE lets them. That will take three to five years. Kids with no real recollection of a Leaf playoff game will be in high school by the time they see one.

Other than that, though, things are pretty great.

I agree with Cambo...people have to stop paying for the on ice product. As long as we continue to drop $$$ for tickets, paraphinalia etc. MLSE has no incentive to change

They got me with the early couple of games too. With most 2002 to 2010 seasons I stupidly catch Leafs fever only around mid-to-late February when that eighth position is is almost almost within reach. Last season was actually more fun to watch - in a boo birds way with goaltender Toskala dependably giving in the early first goal.

Without a NHL quality first line centre, this team will never be any good. The Kessel trade made sense if Burkie was building a first line. He stopped at Kessel. Only a really sad team plays Mitchell on their first line, like Wilson did last night.

People can be cynical about the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup, but when just making the playoffs is doubtful every year, then things have really declined.

I blame management. Also, Toronto should have a second team for marketplace competition. (That's what I'd tell the NHL, but in reality we just want some win.)

Well, start cheering for a good team like the Habs. They won last night. They are in first place. You want a good team, cheer for the Habs. Go Habs.

With your vid's for this blog, don't pull a Bud Dywer!! Suicide!! Burkie should & get rid of Ronnie- even though it will be hard being a good friend of him. Is Punch Imlach still around as I'm sure he whip this team into contenders damn quick.

How can one emerge loquaciously combative when lacking factual ammunition?
In a perceptive state of despondence and exasperation I simply cannot congregate the fortitude required for the organization of an argumentative campaign. Alas; for this day I fall nothing short of incapable and disinclined.

Scarcity of integrity would be an acute definition to verbalize the least.
I fall witness to atrociousness; save Luke Schenn.
Failed attempts to provide victorious engagements have left this devotee in dishevelment. Depleted passion has seen the crescendo of inner animosities and discouragements regarding said saddening situation. Perhaps promises of gratifying ventures towards the horizons have become sequestered in an unobtainable fashion.
Absence of light at the cessation of the thoroughfare has left our denouement undistinguishable.

To you; issuance of surrender is the offering, accompanied by ones utmost sincere humility.
The branding has now become scarring as the wounds struggle through cauterization.
However be forewarned; vainglorious boasting will not bode will amongst the nation.
There will be a turn of tide, we will win again.

It's all going to be OK. Burke built up a crap load of OK defencemen because around trade time, the teams in the running need defensive support and would be willing to trade a first line centre for one.

He will unload 2 or 3 D and pick up at least one great centre man. The building continues.

Kessel needs support and he will ultimately get it, it unfortunately takes time when you go all in with a crap hand as @DGB said.

BTW, MLSE is hurting, sales are down, they are NOT sold out despite what anyone says. I keep getting calls and emails from MLSE, because they are trying to sell unsold boxes and seats. Not resells from current owners, empty boxes.

Habs suck whether they are in 1st or last.

Go Leafs Go!
