MGMT - Kids

slsI'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Kids" by MGMT.

This is not the official video, it's some fan made vid, but it's good enough to be the official video. Although the guy and girl aren't actually MGMT... but the devil is in the details.

Have you heard MGMT's Oracular Spectacular yet? It's good, as is this single. If you like this, check out the Soulwax remix of "Kids" and The Kooks' most excellent acoustic cover.

There's so may covers of songs on this album, it's incredible. I'd say this album is the best album of the year, and I don't think I'm alone in thinking that.

This morning, however, is all about Lily covering Britney. Come on over and have a listen if you wish. genious.

When I'm home, perhaps I'll come back and list a few more covers of MGMT songs. The Kaiser Chiefs covered 'kids' as well, I think.

It's about time you called me genius.

For what it's worth, I too love discovering great new music. My daily listening includes a lot of stuff from the past 8 months. Believe it or not, I sample stuff you post - and try to like it. You post lots of new stuff, which is nice and all, but it means I actually like a very small percentage. And the lower the success rate, the less fun it is.

I've tried to like Lily Allen, but she doesn't do it for me. Womanizer is a pretty brutal song to start with... I'll stick to the "Hit Me Baby" cover by Travis.

I also tried to like Duffy and the Ting Tings because you rave about them, but it's all so poppy. A little of the Ting Tings is okay, and I've played the album several times, but it's MTV pop. Maybe I'm missing it.

So yes, I'll post a Pearl Jam song from 1992 that everyone knows, and you'll post a new song from a band nobody has heard of. Sometimes there's a reason nobody knows a band. Sometimes it's because they're not that good. Not always, but sometimes.

But dammit, you're right. I am a genius. And this genius likes MGMT, too.

And one more thing... you rail on the station we love to hate, 102.1, because they don't play Ting Tings and Duffy.

I'm the guy who is so thankful CFNY isn't playing Ting Tings or Duffy. I think they made the right call there...

Haven't tried the album but I also liked the original version of the song. Although apparently that was from 2003.
While not daily, weekly, monthly? reading, have you discovered the couple of songs which I linked to these past six months or searched some of the other band names listed?

I just listened to M83's Kim and Jessie. Man, that brings me back. For a moment I thought I might be listening to The Breakfast Club soundtrack.

Cool tune...

And what's with the infrequent entries on your blog? Instead of jamming 7 items into one post each month, that's 7 different entries.

In the emarketing world we learn very quickly that every piece needs a single, strong call to action. Give each topic its own spotlight and you'll have content every 5 days or so for the entire month.

what's with... I know.
'The blog died' back in 2006. Afterwards, I started using its platform merely as a place to vent some occasional steam.

Hey Mike,

Duffy doesn't hold a candle to Adele or Kate Nash or Lily Allen or Amy Winehouse... and yes, I like some pop.. I like some very disposable pop at times. But I'm indie/alternative at heart. Most of that pop is brit pop, which is often thought of as indie around here. Mike, no one likes all the songs I post. But OJ is all about me. Especially because i don't get too 'personal' on blogs, and lately don't have the time. When someone likes something, I'm happy. I simply combined two hobbies into one.

I don't care if the Edge plays Tings Tings or anyone else. I think of the edge as an old annoying girlfriend I'd rather not talk to.. but I can try to be civil.

(Besides, even if you think they made the 'right call' on two artists.. they still miss the call, or make the call late many many times. Like with M.I.A. If they play M.I.A., why not Santogold or Lykke Li. Those are HUGE albums. Those aren't artists no one knows.)

When I want to remember some of the good old days, I go to my iPOd. Or listen to Marsden on The Rock. offers the following remixes of MGMT:

Time To Pretend - Tronik Youth Mix
Electric Feel - Justice remix
Time To Pretend - Jorge Elbrecht mix
Electric Feel My Shit - Leif Edit [Mas-up)

Katy Perry covered "Electric Feel"

forgot that one. LOL.

Oh, and the Lily/Britney thing.. that's just funny.. not an 'amazing song' or anything.

I can relate to OJ being all about you, this joint is all about me.

I liked the Back in Black album. I've got to check out Santogold and Lykke Li...

If you like M.I.A. you'll like at least a few Santogold scenes. "Creator" could easily be an M.I.A. song. She's following the trail M.I.A blazed..

Lykke Li is from Sweden. Here album, Youth Novels, is one of my favourite albums of the year.

As for little-known bands not being 'popular'. I agree. Sometimes. It boils down to taste. But.. R.E.M. and U2 used to fall into that category. I'd like to think I'm not as much of a music snob as I used to be. Back in the day if it wasn't on CFNY I resited liking a song.

Now I'll listen to anything from Frank Sinatra to Lykke Li.
