OK Blue Jays (Let’s Play Ball!)

bluejaysAbout a year ago I asked you good people for an MP3 of the Toronto Blue Jays' official song, "OK Blue Jays (Let's Play Ball!)". Hours later I had it, and I meant to share it with everyone but somehow forgot.

Listening to today's Jays game against the Orioles I heard John McDonald put down a perfect bunt with players on the corners. Everyone was safe and I was just happy to hear the suicide squeeze was still a part of the game. That got me singing this song and finally, 15 months after the fact, I'm sharing it with you all.

Sing it loud, sing it proud. The lyrics are below the player, as if you'll need them...

You've got a diamond
You've got nine men
You've got a hat and a bat
And that's not all
You've got the bleachers
Got 'em from spring 'til fall
You got a dog and a drink
And the umpire's call
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Is that a fly ball
Or is it a seagull
Coming in from the lake
Just to catch the game?
It's the last inning
Our guys are winning
Dave's put down a smoker
A strike
And you've got no doubt
(You're out!)
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

It's a beautiful evenin', fans
At the ballpark
When the game starts
Warm summer breezes
Sun's goin' down
And it's all dark
At the ballpark
But that's okay…it's a night game

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Bring on the White Sox
Bring on the BoSox
Bring on the Brewers
The Rangers and the Yankees too
We'll beat the Indians
We'll beat the Tigers
We'll beat the A's so bad it'll make
Billy blue
Waddaya want?
Let's play ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let's (Let's) Play (Play) Ball!

How can the team NOT still play this song during 7th inning stretch - still brings chills.

August 18, 2007 @ 6:51 PM

Sigh...this song gives me chills. I wish they still played this version of it!

August 22, 2007 @ 9:56 AM

Toronto Mike

Megan, I agree. The chill factor is high on this one.

This is from the good 'ol days when the Dave putting down a smoker was none other than Dave Stieb.

August 22, 2007 @ 10:33 AM

...and not David Wells letting one rip.

August 22, 2007 @ 1:44 PM

thanks mike.

I have to get that for my mp3 for when I run. It will get me though the uphill parts of my run.

A question for you... Did this song ever get radio air play back in the 80's ?

August 25, 2007 @ 11:49 PM

Toronto Mike

I don't remember hearing it on CFTR back in the day.

I can throw you the MP3. Play it on a continuous loop and you'll never tire.

August 26, 2007 @ 9:54 AM

I thought it meant Dave Windfield.

September 12, 2007 @ 1:08 AM

Er, Winfield.

September 12, 2007 @ 1:09 AM

Oh the memories...hot summer nights, $1.00 bleacher seats at the Ex....singing "Let's go Blue Jays" during the 7th inning stretch!!

October 17, 2007 @ 10:50 PM

David (from Sydney Australia)

I remember back in the mid-nineties this song was used for the Sydney Blues Baseball Club in the short-lived Australian Baseball League (especially in 1996 when we were Champions) as Sydney was affilliated with Toronto. Hearing it again gave me great memories. Can you all do us Aussies a favour and make some noise about starting a professional baseball league up in Australia again? I loved it first time I saw it.

November 6, 2007 @ 2:53 AM

Toronto Mike

David, I had no idea Sydney used this song. That's wild.

Now I'm going to search for your logo...

November 6, 2007 @ 8:39 AM

Thanks for this! Tons of memories. Did you remember the song written for Tom Henke? I had the 45 record years ago, and wish I had held on to it.

November 7, 2007 @ 4:39 AM

My bad! I see you posted the song several months ago. Any chance of you shooting it my way? And maybe Ok Blue Jays as well?

November 7, 2007 @ 4:44 AM

when they say "Turn Billy blue", who do they mean by Billy?

December 25, 2007 @ 12:56 PM

Toronto Mike

I think they mean Yankees manager Billy Martin.

December 25, 2007 @ 8:15 PM

lol this song is so gay. its funny tho so toronto should bring it back=]

December 27, 2007 @ 2:17 AM

ooo ok but if theyre talking about the yankees manager, what does that have to do with the jays beating the A's?

January 1, 2008 @ 6:35 PM

Toronto Mike

Billy Martin managed the A's from 1980 - 1982. That was both before and after stints with the Yankees.

January 1, 2008 @ 7:29 PM

How can I get the MP3 file for this song?

January 24, 2008 @ 4:46 PM

Toronto Mike

If you enter your email address in the Email Address field, I'll send it to you. Your address won't appear on this site, it'll just appear in my inbox.

It's also on my Blue Jays Album - Class of '92 CD that's still kicking around.

Oddly enough, Humble and Fred are credited on a couple tracks. Separately though.

January 30, 2008 @ 2:46 AM

How do I get a copy of this?
I live in illinois now.

February 2, 2008 @ 4:28 PM

Toronto Mike

Bryan, it's in your inbox. Go Jays Go!

February 2, 2008 @ 4:54 PM

Can you please send me the mp3 of the "OK Blue Jays" song? I love it!

February 25, 2008 @ 11:42 PM

OMG I must have this.... I am still trying to find "Let's go Blue Jays" as well.... Many a game spent at SkyDome and the Ex... I miss baseball and dangit now the only live games I can watch are if I fly to SEATTLE... *sigh*

March 5, 2008 @ 5:51 PM

SWEET Mike, thanks for the quick reply. Now maybe you can help me with my second search... the song that they used to play I think right before games started that included *this is from about a 12 year old memory, sorry*

"Let's go Blue Jays, rock em and a sock em and a bring them all home?"

I'm sure it was on one of those Blue Jays CDs, but I'm having a hard hard time finding it.

March 6, 2008 @ 7:33 PM

Toronto Mike

Kristen, that's the refrain from the embarrassingly awful "The Blue Jays Rap".

That one is so bad, it's good. I think the lyric is "Let's Go Blue Jays, Whack the ball, smack the ball, in the SkyDome. Let's go Blue Jays, rock em and a sock em and a bring them all home."

March 7, 2008 @ 11:18 AM

*grins* Yup, that's it. Now I just have to find the download for it. Thanks Mike!

March 7, 2008 @ 2:02 PM

Jeremy Cooper

Thanks for the wonderful memories this song just brought back. I clearly remember watching games at the Ex, and have been back to T.O. a few times to see some games at the Dome (when in TO, I always stay at the hotel in the Stadium). I also remember the fowl seagull incident witn Dave Winfield which created such flap, and I assume it is the motivation for the line "or is it seagull..."

Can you please email me the mp3 for that song?

With Gratitude,

Jeremy Cooper
(Grew up in TO, now in NYC)

March 16, 2008 @ 9:10 PM

Toronto Mike

I think the seagull line is there because Exhibition Stadium always attracted a lot of seagulls. It was by Lake Ontario, there was always a lot of popcorn and junk and there was no roof, so it was sort of a seagull paradise.

March 17, 2008 @ 8:40 AM

Hey Mike,

I would really appreciate it if you could forward the OK Blue Jays MP3 to me.

Thanks in advance!

March 18, 2008 @ 3:01 PM

Can I get a copy of this song? I went up to watch a Blue Jay/Oriole game for my bachelor party a few years back. That game had a streaker and this song with every one doing calistetics (sp?). Great game, even better beer. God Bless Canada.

Thanks for the memories.
Go Jays and Come Tigers, lets get it going!!!

April 18, 2008 @ 9:16 PM

I am going through a box of 45s to log them and possible sell some nd guess what I came across? Yup, you guessed it, the *original* 45 of OK Blue Jays still in the original sleeve and both the record and sleeve in *mint* condition. I may consider selling it if the price is right.

April 20, 2008 @ 3:27 PM

Toronto Mike

Hey Tigger59, can you scan the cover and send me the pic?

April 20, 2008 @ 3:44 PM

Thanks so much for posting this! Great memories sitting at Exhibition Stadium for evening games, on the first base side being blinded by the sun until it went below the bleachers.

Could I bother you for a copy of the mp3? Thank you!

P.S. Does anyone remember/have a copy of "Terminator - The Ballad of Tom Henke"?

May 3, 2008 @ 8:51 AM

Thank you for finding it. I was saddended to here they do not play it during the game any more, that a shame.

May 6, 2008 @ 2:19 PM

Toronto Mike

Do they really not play this anymore? They were playing it as recently as last season when I last attended a game. Can anyone else corroborate Nicole's statement?

May 6, 2008 @ 3:36 PM

This is so funny, my husband and I were just talking about this song last night. I love this song, they should start playing it at the games again. The Friday night home games with the retro uniforms would be prefect for it!! Can you please send me the song as well I would love to have it. Thanks

May 8, 2008 @ 3:39 PM

Johnny V

November 12, 2008 @ 3:03 AM

are you sure this is the song that they play during the 7th cause it sort of sounds different

November 16, 2008 @ 8:20 PM

Toronto Mike

Yes, this is the song the Jays play during the 7th inning stretch at home games.

Then they follow this up with "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", but that's a recent phenomenon.

November 17, 2008 @ 7:56 AM

How can I get a copy of "OK Blue Jay" and the "Tom Henke" song?
thanks TC

December 26, 2008 @ 4:06 PM

I got this song luckily enough on Napster (or maybe Limewire) a few years back. But what I'd REALLY like to find somehow is the Blue Jays version of the Talkin' Baseball song. I know one did exist -- I can remember hearing it a few times at Exhibition Stadium. We didn't quite have Wllie, Mickey & the Duke. It was more like Fairly, the Swatto and Big John! I had totally forgotten about the Terminator song until just reading someone's comment here but would love to hear that too. I also have a vague memory of a VERY cheesey song that goes back to 1977 that I think Labatt's must have been using to promote the team locally. Have there been any others anyone can remember, or better yet have MP3s of? sherjon@rogers.com

January 6, 2009 @ 9:50 PM

Mike, my almost-4 year old is a ridiculous Jays fan (knows most of the line-up by name / number already!). He knows the chorus to the song, but I played the whole thing for him and would love to find the MP3 to rip to CD / MP3 player so he can listen to it whenever he wants. If you still have the audio file (or can direct me to) could you send it to me?

Thanks very much!

Hi Mike. Your twitter posts today brought me to this page and I have been listening to the song and reminiscing about the days of visiting Toronto and watching the Blue Jays in Exhibition Stadium. If you still can, please forward me the mp3. Much thanks.

Can anyone tell me where to find the Blue Jays Album?? The one with the Jays version of rockin' robbin. My Husband is an Epic Jays fan and deeply misses having his old one.

I am a grandmother living in Mexico and want to share the game and this song with my grandson Can you send me the MP3 and I will see if he reacts with the visceral joy and pride in our Jays that inspires me & millions to feelings that aren't so easily accessible most of the time. Gracias!

Great song.
The US has Take me out to the ballgame and the seven inning stretch.
Canada has OK Blue Jays and should play it more often.

Can you send me a MP3 of the Blue Jays song
As a Canadian I would love to play it at our slow pitch softball league in Florida

I have the old "ok blue jays" record...is it worth anything ?

May 25, 2016 @ 1:03 PM

I'm trying to source the version of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" that is played at Rogers Center.
I need this to play at a Wedding Reception and as much as I am not a fan of this version, so be it.
I've tried reaching out to Tim Langton but he either is ignoring my plea or hasn't seen my message.
Any help is appreciated! I have checked out YouTube but the only versions are recorded via mobile devices and needless to say the quality is not the best for commercial play back.
Thank you in advance.

Could you please send me a copy of “OK Blue Jays”? Would like to use it on my programmable doorbell as a surprise for my wife who is a huge fan. Many thanks.
