I've been asked to appear on a round table this evening where we will discuss The Tragically Hip song Fully Completely. It's FOTM JD's Hip podcast and I had no say in what song I'd be discussing. I'm actually a little disappointed.
There are dozens of Hip songs I could write a lengthy essay about, but Fully Completely, IMHO, is a simple little breakup song. It's great live, with Gordian lyrics you scream along to:
Either it'll move me
Or it'll move right through me
I always liked that line. But then there's this:
Bring me back in shackles
And hang me long out in the sun
Exonerate me
Then forget about me
Wait and you'll see
A breakup song, but a great one. And lest we forget, it's the title track from The Tragically Hip's biggest album. Not my favourite album of theirs, but their biggest album laden with hits. Heck, Fully Completely is the 6th single from Fully Completely. How many albums can you name that go 6 singles deep?
It will be interesting to see how much more I have to say about Fully Completely. As with most Hip songs, there's likely more than meets the eye.
