When in Doubt, Look Up the Domain Name Registration Data

Facebook is home of the fake ads promising massive discounts and delivering garbage, if they deliver anything at all. It's impossible to keep up with them, because it's very easy to register a domain name, modify a template to create your fake online retailer, and buy Facebook ads to lure naive and vulnerable Facebookers from their hard-earned money.

But, there's a quick way to sniff out a scam if you're unsure. All of these fake companies link to a domain name. For example, the scam ad above is for Hartford London and links to hartfordlondon.com. But if you search for the domain information at https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup you'll see that domain was only registered on September 5, 2025.

The scam works like this:

  1. Register a domain and modify an HTML template to mimic fake company
  2. Buy Facebook ads and trick people into buying heavily discounted products online because after many years the company is going out of business or they're celebrating a big anniversary or whatever.
  3. Ship the worst garbage imaginable that you will never wear, and then make it impossible to get a refund.

If you must buy online, go directly to the domain name of a retailer you trust. If you're ever in doubt, see when the domain name was registered. If it was registered recently, it's a scam.
