Yesterday, I had a great chat with Jim Moore, the bassist for One Free Fall and Rusty, and Jeff Rogers's name came up. Jeff Rogers dropped by in April 2023 and we talked about how he steered the careers of The Pursuit of Happiness, Crash Test Dummies, Rusty and other great Canadian bands. Jeff, if you didn't hear the episode, is the man behind Handsome Boy Records.
The very first album ever released by Handsome Boy was One Free Fall's Mud Creek. From Wikipedia:
Other artists who released material on Handsome Boy included hHead, Groovy Religion, Meryn Cadell, The Monoxides, Malcolm Burn, John Oswald and Slowburn. The label also released the soundtrack to Jeremy Podeswa's film Eclipse.
That got me thinking about Slowburn, an alt-rock band out of Vancouver that was all over CFNY with their song "Whatever". The re-recording of "Whatever" that appeared on their album Spark was produce by Blue Peter (and FOTM) Chris Wardman, but if you know anything about Jeff Rogers, you'll know that's par for the course.
"Whatever" was seemingly on high rotation when I was listening daily in 1996, and I'll admit I liked it very much. Listening again almost 30 years later, I still like it very much.
Whatever.
