Bob McCown Out at Prime Time Sports

Bob "Bobcat" McCown has been hosting Prime Time Sports on CJCL 1430 / 590 since 1989. Except for a brief period when Dan Shulman hosted the program, he's been the only host the show's ever had.

Tomorrow's his last day as he's been ousted by Rogers Sportsnet. This news was originally tweeted by TSM's Jonah and confirmed today by Sportsnet.

bob mccown

It seem Bob wants to talk about this, and I can't think of a better forum for him to do so than Toronto Mike'd. Bob, if you're reading this, contact me and we'll make it happen.

A great read. A little long winded in the middle and dragged on a bit but overall good.

Holy shit! Honestly I didn't see this coming.

I was under the impression that today (Thursday June 20) was his last day as that's what the Toronto Sports Media article listed. Is that not correct?

Like I've noted elsewhere (as has Mike) - this feels like how Rogers treated Gord Martineau where he was on the air one day and gone the next. You kinda expect, bob's wishes or not, that there would be something more for someone like him who has spent so many years in the market and on top of his game and such.

June 20, 2019 @ 6:49 PM

Patrick

Nevermind - Bob just acknowledged it on air as he signed off

Yes, tomorrow is Bob's last day hosting PTS.

My sources tell me he was told two weeks ago Rogers was buying out his contract.

June 20, 2019 @ 7:08 PM

That's been happening a lot in the last few years. They bring in a new manager to cut costs because of declining revenue as they lose more listeners and advertisers to 'new media', and almost unavoidably the highest paid on-air person is let go.

June 20, 2019 @ 7:26 PM

radio sucks

who cares. radio sucks anyways. they think they're so high and mighty and better than us. good to see him fired.

Gotta make it a point to listen tomorrow.

Commented on this elsewhere, but it is striking that based on social media responses today and in the past, only an extremely tiny percentage of listeners like any of the programs and/or personalities on either 590 or 1050. Seems like I'm not exactly missing out by avoiding radio. Does The Fan still air the Got Junk and Alpine Credits ads (seemingly) every 20 minutes?

June 20, 2019 @ 9:40 PM

Alan Dye

I have listened to the Fan since it's inception. The new morning show is a complete joke. i.e. Brady the other day tells us he has never worn a muscle shirt or a tank top. Another thing he has never worn is a muzzle. Now, with Bob going, this stations days are numbered. Maybe Rogers should fold the Fan and the Blue Jays because they are both run like a joke. Rogers, a.k.a. the bottom line. Adios.

June 20, 2019 @ 10:06 PM

Alan Etobicoke

I would just like to add that I too believe that Rogers relieved Bob of his position. Some of the decisions this station has made over the last few years leaves one to wonder just who is steering the ship.

June 20, 2019 @ 10:31 PM

Chuck 99

A year or two ago, this move would have been a shocker. I am still somewhat surprised because I always envisioned Bob letting his contract expire and leaving the show voluntarily.

Overdrive on TSN 1050 has been chipping away at the ratings of Prime Time Sports for the past year. When you realize that the combined number of listeners for TSN 1050 and The Fan 590 have been in a slow decline in most time slots and you factor in the high salary being paid to the Bobcat, the decision seems less surprising.

June 20, 2019 @ 11:02 PM

I guess I am surprised but not shocked. Stopped listening to McCowan and the Fan about 2 years ago. When you realize these guys are no different than your friends and co workers talkin sports only NO commercials and traffic reports. The bar for ratings lowered every year.

Mccown’s show has been the one constant on the local sports radio scene throughout my entire life as a fan. From the cancellation of the 04/05 NHL season to the sale of MLSE to Rogers/Bell to AA and Beeston leaving the Jays, I’ve eagerly tuned in to hear Bob cover virtually ever major story that’s broken over the last 20 years. His show had a “place to be” feeling to it: I may not have listened every day, but when something important was happening, I’d go straight to PTS. Bob had that effect on the marketplace. Love him or hate him, you wanted to hear what he had to say and you knew he’d have the top of the line guests on to discuss the news with, where his superior interview skills shone through.

As Mike has alluded to on several podcast episodes, Bob’s interviews with Burt Randolph Sugar were fantastic. I’ve also enjoyed his regular slot with Bob Ryan over the years. The occasional Pinball Clemons appearance was always a treat. And those once-a-year roundtable segments with the GMs of all the Toronto teams were geeat. There’s a big void to fill with “Canada’s most listened to sports talk presentation” leaving the airwaves. I hope Bob returns soon, ideally in an in-depth interview format via podcast. That’s him at his best.

For some reason I remember the ad of him from the 90's, where he talks about being the Blue Jays PA announcer in 1977 and one game when the Tigers were visiting he left the mic on when Jason Thompson was at bat and said he was going to hit a Home Run. And sure enough he did.

The funny thing though is I have that game on audio cassette and you can't hear anything as such in the background. However, in the next days game (also on audio cassette) the Tigers play-by-play guy makes reference to McCown's said statement.

I'm surprised by this. When i drive I listen to PTS on the way home. It's not as compelling as it was a few years ago but Bob still has it when he wants to bring it.

I'll probably still listen to PTS but certainly not as often . I do hope he finally does the podcast with Mike. I'm sure there's some very interesting stories to tell.

Bob's low point and I commented here on it at the time, related to watching female tennis players and specifically on Gabriela Sabatini.

As much as I loved Bob's outspokenness, he crossed the line back then in a big way, and if he said that in 2019 and not 2011 he would have been fired immediately. This link was from 2016, recalling it.

I am only bringing this up to say that as much as I listened and loved Bob, he had his moments of shame, and that was the lowest one.

What I want to know is what will happen to that awesome 1980s theme music?? It survived the Sportsnet branding of the Fan years ago somehow. It would be interesting to find out the history of it from Retrontario or someone who would know.

Jack

Good riddance. Possibly the most overbearing, rude egomaniac ever to hit the airwaves. Was nowhere as hip as he thought he was.

June 21, 2019 @ 2:00 PM

Urooj Islam

The infamous and much talked about "FOB" phenomenon definitely began his downfall, he was so checked out of his job starting about 10-12 years ago that he needed personal friends with him in the studio just to get through his 3 hour show.

The people with actual broadcast talent and entertaining radio personas ie Stephen Brunt/Damian Cox, he constantly feuded with in favour of his unentertaining and boring friends like Gord Kirke, John Shannon and Jim Kelly (RIP), etc.

Still, it's an unceremonious end for a GTA radio legend and perhaps more of a reflection on the medium of radio rather than a reflection on Bob. Like Justin said, McCown in his prime made you want to tune into PTS to see what Bob thought of the big story but I don't think that mindset exists in 2019. When a big story breaks now sports or otherwise, the last thing I want to do now is turn on the radio so maybe the era of the radio star is finally over.

Hayes, Noodles, & the O-Dog must be happy.

This is just simply Rogers using the Atkins-Shapiro management style.....DUMP SALARY.

No one is off limits, the higher you make, the more of a target you become.

Rogers Sportsnet suck anyway. No announcers on that station is worth listening to. At least they turn to CBS Sports Radio after BlowJays games. Nice to hear Scottie Ferrel.

To Jack and Brian...ego? Shaking my head,
I am sorry to see Bob go. I love Bob and only started following sports because of him. I turned on the fan be accident and enjoyed it so much. As for Rogers, they are going down hill with everything they put their finger on.
Some of us will miss you Bob. Some of us will not miss hearing from the likes of Jack and Brian, who are possible the target market that Rogers is aiming for...Sad and low.

I am so saddened to hear that dude with sunglasses and expressive options is being cast aside. He is dynamic and non bullshitter with his questions. I must say , I never called into the station, however my most enjoyable story Bob would tell was the interview with Paul Bear Bryan the iconic coach of Alabama . Bob you will return to our listening pleasure. Take time and enjoy your golfing. A longtime listener 😎.
Thank you for making my drive home so enjoyable 👍🏿

1.5M to 2M a year contract depending on who you believe. Rough year...couldn't sell his overpriced house at 11M with wife as agent, his Mike Weir Winery went under last year while owing Mike Weir 2.2M and RBC 4M (the property just sold in receivership last week for pennies on the dollar), treats guests and co hosts like crap. Cadeau has got some onions to cut him loose but I would bet there was a buy out clause...G

June 21, 2019 @ 4:53 PM

Chuck 99

I, too, am wondering if there was a buyout clause. Bob signed his last contract in late 2017, so unless it was a two year deal, I doubt Rogers would want to pay him his full salary for a year and a half to sit around and do nothing, especially if it is as much as was suggested by Gambler9.

June 21, 2019 @ 7:18 PM

Rob

First listened to Bob in 1992, my first year at U of T. Remember the FAN 1430 with Jim Shaky Hunt, Dan Shulman, and a cast of other oldies. Although I respect him as a broadcaster, he was sorrily behind the vibe of 'current' and I absolutely hated his schtick of talking down to/belittling his co-hosts and guests. I truly stopped listening to him years ago, and over the past three years would only turn to Primetime Sports during the Hayes Noodles and ODog commercials.

Bob, I do wish you well. You've had a great run, maybe this buyout will re-enerize you somehow.

On another note, aside from Jeff Blair and Burkey at noon, there is not an iota of listenable talent on Sportnet 590. Morning Show has flatlined, Maclean and Nick are un-listenable and the 1-4 slot ___.

June 21, 2019 @ 7:29 PM

John

I certainly enjoyed the show for many, many years and I will miss Bob's (well, a lot of them anyways) opinions on a variety of topics.

I really appreciated and learned from the perspectives of the personalities he had surrounding him and although he was the host, it felt like he was more of a facilitator of conversation rather than the centre of it on many segments.

For all you people that are "saddened," think he was dumped, deserving of better treatment, or some reward, get a grip. Talk about celebrity worship. The man made 1-2 million dollars to talk about sports for 3 hours a day. That was his job. When the local (insert job here) retires, do they get special treatment? Do people cry? Like seriously, get a grip on reality.

Yes I liked his program. I listened to it daily. I liked it. But people retire.

June 21, 2019 @ 9:32 PM

Rob J

The headline on the TSM post alluded to "massive layoffs" of which only one has gone down (granted a biggie). Please let this not be a 'drip, drip' all summer with a guy gone here and another one there a week later. Besides, Sportsnet needs all hands on deck for the imminent 'Subban-to-the-Leafs' trade, don't they?

Agree with Jack. Good riddance to the overwhelming, over bearing, over rated egomaniac.

June 21, 2019 @ 10:11 PM

Martin

Sad to see him go. I agree that he wasn’t always as engaged over the last few years, but when there was a big/important story he could still bring it.

I suspect it was a combination of the big bucks and his unwillingness to be a shill for Rogers (particularly hockey) that did him in.

Shulman or Blair would be great replacements, but I suspect it will be The Two Morons. If so I will get to listen to Oakley again - have missed hearing him since he moved to afternoons.

June 21, 2019 @ 11:08 PM

Chuck 99

I think Tim and Sid will be taking over the Prime Time Sports slot. With a few tweeks, it would be easy to simulcast their Sportsnet TV show on radio. And that would save Rogers a lot of money.

Also, Tim and Sid have established their own brand, which is important when you are succeeding someone who was on thé air for more than forty years.

June 21, 2019 @ 11:37 PM

Chuck 99

By the way, I agree with Martin. I think Schuman or Blair would be much better replacements. So I hope I am wrong about Tim and Sid.

What is going on with Sportsnet? In 07 they lost any NFL product and this year they will be out of English soccer that they had forever.

Sportsnet seems to only have NHL rights, half the regional Leafs and Raptors games and the absolutely unwatchable Blue Jays and some non-Espn baseball games, and I guess OHL. I swear 75% of the time those channels sportsnet centeal, Jays in 30 and plays of the month on a never ending loop with some darts or poker sprinkled in

They have no soccer, no golf, no auto racing (except the indy 500 and TO race), no boxing, no mma, no football, no ncaa sports. The station has become so full of filler, I think they just become too cheap to bid on any live sports program after the NHL

June 22, 2019 @ 8:11 AM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

Tron, you forgot Sportsnet still has some tennis, but not much. Rogers Cup, and Davis Cup/Fed Cup. Agree they have a lot of lousy filler going on all the time. So often I am flipping through all the garbage when I navigate their channels.

I used to listen to PTS most days once upon a time, though almost never in the last several years as I increasingly left most old-style radio/TV behind as I found other web stuff much more specific to my less-mainstream interests. I had intended to listen to McCown's last PTS yesterday (Friday) but simply forget, so I just now listened to the first and last few minutes of it from the station's website.
www.sportsnet.ca/590/prime-time-sports/june-21-the-end-of-an-era/
The goodbye at the end really was as short, unsentimental, and unceremonious as he had said he wanted it to be. I'm not quite sure what he was implying by saying "My butt hurts".

June 22, 2019 @ 8:53 AM

H.o.E.

@Tron - What happened to Sportsnet? It's the same thing that's happening to all the older media -- newspapers, magazines, radio, TV channels. They're in unavoidable downward spiral as they gradually lose more and more revenue. They are the increasingly irrelevant and unneeded middlemen, no longer necessary for the content producers to reach their audiences.

June 22, 2019 @ 9:07 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Sportsnet has the bulk of the big three Toronto-based team leagues.

They have all the Blue Jays, the vast majority of Leafs including all the playoffs, and 50% of the Raps. That's a lot of key content.

They just need some deep runs by the Leafs in the playoffs and the Jays to return to the hype train of '15. :)

Gabe Morency, from The Morning After in NY.

That's the guy they should go after. This guy knows his sports. He was a die-hard supporter of the Raps from the beginning. He loves his Expos. He got his start in Montreal. He has a wealth of knowledge and opinion and would make a very entertaining show.

But he is probably too risky to fill in for The Company known as Rogers. He is his own person & probably wouldn't take shit from the "Suits".

We don't need no retreads, find some fresh voices. Hell, even Barry Davis' show on Sauga960AM is entertaining.

If Dave Cadeau, Program Director, is in charge, then you know you are in trouble. This guy dont know talent. After all, this is the guy who hired Ben Wagner, the mouthpiece of the BlueJays who tries to impress us with his nauseating storytelling.

I learned long ago to stop wondering why people whine, moan, and complain about sports-radio programming and the on-air talent yet continue to listen incessantly as if it's still the mid-90s. Though the TSM endeavor would collapse in on itself if people did.

June 22, 2019 @ 3:01 PM

Alex Murphy

sad to see him go with so little ceremony- Ive never understood why neither TSN or sportsnet now that they have network of radio stations don't try and do more national programming- i.e make PTS a national show across the country, make it less toronto focused. or maybe do a late night version so we can stop getting all those lame US feeds from CBS/Fox/ESPN. I don't care for Farrell and his alcholic party shtick. dan patrick is knowledgeable but he's american. Why can't we create our equivalent show and broadcast it across the country? I think there is a lack of creativity at both bell/TSN and Rogers/Sportsnet. I don't know why the CRTC allows them to carry US feeds at all- surely they could find some younger newer talent and put it together and make a show that's more relevant to Canadians. I hope Bob lands on his feet, Im sure he will. Sure he was a big egomaniac know it all but that was part of the show. Don't know why they couldn't have made it a several week or several month send off and bring in the new guys at the same time and have a happier handoff. he made that show for 30 years. it seems like a rather unceremonious ending.

June 24, 2019 @ 12:03 PM

I would assume that Bob McCown has a non-compete clause. But it would have been interesting if he had gone to the competition.

June 24, 2019 @ 3:34 PM

Rob J

Alex Murphy: The unmitigated disaster that was The TEAM 1050 (RIP) is why there's no current national Canadian radio programming. In this country sports-radio must be local. Besides, the apparent business model of TSN and Sportsnet is to become more Toronto-centric, not less. (I'm not bitching about that fact, just acknowledging it)

June 24, 2019 @ 4:23 PM

Urooj Islam

Canadian sports fans are total weirdos so it's tough to program anything to meet their needs.

They hate Toronto and everyone from Toronto except they love to root for Toronto teams when they're doing well as we just saw with the Raptors championship run and the Blue Jays in 2015 and 2016. They are very regional about their hockey teams but they will also root for a Canadian team outside of their own if it's doing well in the playoffs.

Whichever way the wind blows, that's where Canadian sports fans go.

June 24, 2019 @ 4:40 PM

Rob J

The elephant in the room is that one or both all-sports cable channels have an ownership stake in the Leafs, Raptors, Jays, Argos, TFC etc, which, I'm sorry, can't help but affect both the quantity and tone of the coverage at the expense of other Canadian teams.

imagine if ESPN and FOX Sports together owned a percentage of individual NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB franchises. It was strange enough when FOX owned the Dodgers from around 1998-2004 when it was the MLB national rights holder.

National sports radio has worked in the US because the networks essentially base the programming around the NFL, which is a behemoth with no equal here. Fans in Pittsburgh etc, have no problem listening to content focusing on other teams, while hockey fans in Vancouver aren't exactly flocking to hear segments on the Senators.

The US having 10x our population also makes it more feasible to air national shows.

(Note: These are just my thoughts, opinions, and observations. I mean no intent to insult your beloved teams and favourite media outlets/on-air personalities).

To bring this back on topic, in addition to Bob McCown and Doug MacLean we have more names.

@Mike: You've gotta try to get Scott Morrison and Doug MacLean on the podcast. Although I'm suspecting you might have an easier time getting Scott on.

Bryan Hayes seems to be upcoming... Humor . . . he is funny vs. Bobcat's aggressive and sometimes rude demeanor. I checked the fall/winter ratings. Here it is in a nutshell!!
TSN Overdrive up 55%
The Fan down 20%

That's the story . . . Simple . . .

C U later Bob.....

They lost this listener the day Bob was let go, not that they care, sorry Tim and Sid, overdrive no thanks, McCowan was the best at what he did, controversial I don't think so, he was a facts guy, and he had an opinion, love it or hate it, it was always an interesting one. I hope he shows up somewhere, he definitely deserved better.

Despite not having listened since late 2016, the more I think about this decision, the more ridiculous it appears, both because of his still-high ratings and because Rogers had re-upped his contract fairly recently. Penny-wise but pound-foolish, IMO. Obviously everyone is dispensable and no one is owed a job on radio, but the whole affair seems 'off' somehow.

If indeed the long-term replacement is some version of the 'Tim and Sid Show' of which my last memory is the camera focused on Sid for a full hour while he watched a soccer game, then those who want gravitas and authority from their drive-home sports show will be seething.

Bob McGowan is the only Expert Sports Commentator that I watch. The FLUNKIES you now have on are a JOKE. I will not be watching this program ever again. .....well.... maybe tomorrow if Bob is going to be on.....One of the biggest mistakes Roger's ever made.

I think Rogers want Bob to go. The day before Bob said Asshole on the air. I thinks that gave Rogers excuse for Bob to go. The next day he was gone.
