Can't wait for more snow

April 5, 2019 @ 8:25 AM

Well, not first. My Coyotes won't make the playoffs. This is sad. My Habs still can though and they'll sneak in. I know it. Anyway, my Habs lost last night though. Bummer. That was not good. My Cavs lost last night as well. My Indians won, but my Orioles lost. My Diamondbacks didn't play. Well, it will be either Nets or Bucks winning the NBA championship. My personal baker will bake the cake at the last minute for the party. We don't need any more snow. It's April.

April 5, 2019 @ 8:31 AM

Friendly reminder: According to that sadly now-deceased musical prophet Prince, "Sometimes it
Snows In April"!! (One of his ten best tracks, fer sure!).

On another note, don't meant to offend anyone (too much), but what the hell is the deal with that
formerly kidnapped Chinese student and the lipstick he appears to be wearing in that one main
photo featured by CTV during every damn newscast? Dude looks more robotic and alien than I
do, and that really takes some serious effort to accomplish. And no, 'dwllr73 doesn't ever sport any
makeup, btw!!! (Well, 'cept for when I attempt to make like a portly Paul "Starchild" Stanley in the
insecurity of my own decrepit living room...).

When there is a situation that shuts down part of a subway line (whether it's unplanned, or planned on a weekend), apparently there is a fleet of shuttle buses that are put into action.
Since the subway relief line that was needed 20 years ago is still only in the planning stage, why not use this fleet of shuttle buses for a surface express bus route that would be a reasonable substitute with diamond lanes during weekday rush hours? (The present so-called 'express' routes are actually only semi-express, and strangely none are routed to singularly act as a downtown relief line going to a Bloor-Danforth subway station.)

April 5, 2019 @ 9:58 AM

Shuttle buses are only a passable solution if you are getting on at the beginning or the end of
the route. Virtually impossible and frankly quite painful to otherwise endure. And don't forget
that there are now plenty of early closures Monday to Thursday as well. It really does seem like
this untenable transit situation will last until infinity and beyond.

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

The calm before the storm, with the NHL and NBA playoffs soon to get underway. As a Raptors fan this has been a fascinating season, with so many dynamics coming into play with the rehaul of the roster. Nurse deserves a ton of credit for how he has managed his personnel, where he now knows who he can rely on, and use heavily for the playoffs, where the rotation has now been shortened. It is completely irrelevant who the Raptors face in the first round. They will take care of business in an efficient way. Maybe they lose on game on the road, but don't expect that to happen. They will likely sweep and have lots of rest for the next round. When Kawhi brings playoff intensity, and there are no mental lapses, which have been due more to boredom than anything else, they have the killer instinct to not just beat, but stomp on their opponents. Wake me up in Round 2, is what I am saying.

April 5, 2019 @ 10:22 AM

@ Brian

The Pistons scare me. I know they shouldn't but the Raptors history of post-season under performance still sits with me.

We finally don't have to worry about LeBron and now the Bucks are killing it. Anything less than the NBA Finals will be a disappointment to me. I am optimistic thought...if Lowry, Siakam, Green and Leonard are on top of their game, the Raptors could win it all. It is a really strong starting lineup when they all play well.

Last point!! I think this is our make it or break it season. I don't see Leonard or Green staying.

April 5, 2019 @ 11:34 AM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

McNulty, don't be fooled by what the Pistons did to us in the regular season, winning 3 close games. The only way they take a game or max 2 off of us is if Blake Griffin, who can legitimately make a difference plays out of his mind, but even so, the Raptors have multiple defenders who can limit the damage. Let Casey have his regular season wins, and celebrate, then badmouth our organization. I really, really want to draw the Pistons to exploit Casey in the playoffs, who was constantly outreached during his tenure here.

What people are overlooking, and I just shared a post on Facebook, is the Raptors playoff experience, and how deep it runs. There will be no panic, it will be very businesslike, and they will find a way to get the job done. You rarely see a team like the Bucks go from never making it out of the first round to the finals, it is a process, and you can't rush it. The only thing that concerns me are key injuries, but we have no control over that, so let's hope the rotation stays healthy.

Let's not worry about next year, this is all about getting to the Finals and as you said, take a real shot at winning it all, which IMO is within reach.

It is laughable when people were wondering who has the better chance to win it all, the Leafs or Raptors, as the two have completely different paths, with the Leafs being way, way harder. The NBA only has a select # of teams who realistically can win it all, Golden State big favourite of course, but I can see Houston possibly coming out of the West, as they are the only team that can match up and beat Golden State by playing a different type of game. It is pretty likely that we will get our Raptors against the Bucks, but the Bucks can be tripped up by the Celtics in the 2nd round due to the lack of experience.

Looks like Sparky's days in TO may be numbered. Leafs call up Hutchison as back up for Freddie vs. Boston. Dooby made a mistake keeping Sparky over MacIllaney to start the season with this move today. Babs never had any confidence in Sparky.
TBay overall in the playoffs seem to be the team to go all the way for Lord Stanley & I'm surprised our resident sports mogul hasn't started promoting them as Coyotes & probably Habs won't make the playoffs. We will wait & see for her NEXT choice is for the cup.

Her personal baker must be furious with her.

April 5, 2019 @ 10:22 PM

I've been thinking a lot about Bob Cole the last few days, knowing tomorrow will be his last game. I can't help but feel genuinely sad I won't get to hear him call games anymore. He's the only announcer in any sport where I'll watch a game I otherwise wouldn't care about just to hear the play by play. His ability to carry his voice to capture the moment and to describe the game an almost romanticized fashion is unparalleled. Hearing him call a game feels like hockey at its pure essence. Cole's the voice of hockey in Canada - the greatest voice the game has ever had. And the greatest voice it will ever have.

With the Leafs locked into 3rd place, tomorrow night's game is one I may have normally skipped. But I'll be watching every second to hear Bob's final game. I can't wait.

Well, this is no good. My Habs and Coyotes are done. Oh well, this sucks big time. Well, the Bucks will win it all. Believe me. Trust me. It's going to be the Bucks finding a way to win, so there will be a deer cake at my NBA party the first Saturday after it's all done. How about those Indians. That was great. They won with Carlos Santana getting a walkoff homer. How about those Diamondbacks. That was great. Lots of runs, lots of homers including Adam Jones. My Orioles didn't play. Oh well, so sad about my Habs or Coyotes not making it.

markosaar - you asked me a question in the last open mike, i didn't see it! so i'll just answer it here.
re: why would i think i wouldn't see a concert

i think when i was younger, concerts were just very much out of my price range, and just something unaffordable for my family. so i didn't think i would ever go to one - but once i grew up, i started to go. and each time, it feels magical to see artists live and do their thing! ain't it grand?

Cheryl's baker clearly had a talk with her about her rooting interests. He will not take any more cake orders unless she picks one of the best teams in the league, thus she picked the Bucks in the NBA.

I assume she'll also be a Lightning fan within the next couple of days with the Coyotes/Canadiens out.

April 6, 2019 @ 4:27 PM

It seems to me once her 2,3,4,13 favorite teams in a certain sport get eliminated she makes a statement that she does not care at all about that sport anymore.
My all time favorite was a few years ago when the Cleveland Browns were 0 & 13 in a 17 game season she was still calling for them to be in the Super Bowl.

By the rotton way The Blue Jays are playing this season I believe they are secretly one of her teams and she needs them to win.

April 6, 2019 @ 7:26 PM

Well, they've been my Bucks for a little while now. They're in the playoffs for sure. Anyway, too bad they lost, but they lost to my Nets. No, I'm not a Jays fan. My Coyotes lost their last game, but my Habs won their last game. Well, Lightning will probably win the cup. My Indians and Diamondbacks both won last night. My Orioles lost again.

April 7, 2019 @ 7:32 AM

Jason from Sudbury

For all you Hab have to admit, they far exceeded everyone's expectations this year. They went from being the 4th worst team last team to being on the cusp of a playoff spot this year. I'm proud of my boys. Looks like its up to the Jets, Flames and Leafs to bring the cup home. I really do hope the Leafs beat Boston. Truth be told I wanna see the Leafs win the cup sooner than later. My grandfather is in his 70's now and I would like for him to see his team win 1 last cup in his lifetime.

Your Royals aren't doing so great, either.

I read in the Kansas City Star that you've been a Royals fan since 1985.

April 8, 2019 @ 1:56 PM

Pretty confident that we are getting awfully close to the era of rock concerts largely
being relegated to occurring in hospitals, rehab centres, retirement communities, and
most likely of all, cemeteries. What with an increasing number of classic rotters(!)
becoming infirm and/or deceased at an ever-steady clip. Good thing, then, that we
have the likes of such true rockers as Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes
readily available to pick up thae slack. And speaking of cemeteries, kindly do yourselves
a favour and don't waste your hard-earned coin on the recently-released "Pet Sematary"
remake. Not even on a half-priced Tuesday or with a two-for-one coupon. Nice cover of
that particular Ramones track from up and coming punkers Starcrawler.

Old music fans who have trouble with change will wish we had a real life Pet Sematary so all those soon to be dead rockers can be brought back to life over and over again. The tragic consequence will be that all their albums after they are brought back from the dead will suck.

April 8, 2019 @ 5:59 PM

@MIke, yep! :)

April 8, 2019 @ 6:52 PM

@bsmntdwllr73 -- I thought that movie title sounded familiar. It was mentioned at the mall stunt dog show I saw during the March break, as it apparently employed their Tonic the stunt cat.

April 8, 2019 @ 7:04 PM

We had our neighborhood yearly playoff pool last night. 15 players.
6 of us points, goals & assists 1 pt each & have to pick a goalie with wins 1pt & shutout 2 extra pts.
The last 3 years I have won. It was a snake draft 12344321, etc. I rolled the dice & came in 2nd & chose to pick 3rd as middle of the pack as last few draws.
Pick players from both conferences & decide on a sleeper team. I did this year & not the Leafs.
I'm not going to disclose my picks but am confident another winner year,
Never pick same players from same team early who are favored is my strategy.

April 8, 2019 @ 10:00 PM

It was probably someone else they were writing about in the Kansas City Star. Anyway, how about those Orioles. Great game. They're sure doing better than last year. My Indians and Diamondbacks both had the day off. I think the Lightning will win the cup. That's what will happen. Leafs won't.

April 9, 2019 @ 7:03 AM

H.o.E. - my sister and I had tickets for last night's Fleetwood show. Thank goodness I saw a tweet about it, because her email notification didn't go into her inbox - we definitely would've driven down none the wiser. She's bummed because she really wants to see them, I hope a new date will be given soon.

April 9, 2019 @ 8:49 AM

@Urooj Islam
No need for most of those soon-to-be-deceased classic rockers to 'visit' the pet boneyard 'cause
the majority of their latter-day albums already stink and precious few of those tracks ever wind-up
on concert setlists regardless.

Tonic the stunt cat was truly the highlight of that flick, but there were at least 3 other cats performing some of the less-demanding animal action.

Sorry about your postponed concert, but it might have been for the best. Fleetwood Mac is merely
a shadow of its former self without the unfairly exiled Lindsey Buckingham as part of its lineup.
Neil Finn from Crowded House and Mike Campbell from The Heartbreakers are both great
musicians, but poor substitutes for the real thing. Plus, the band has at least 8 to 10 additional
musicians onstage with them, which also speaks to how musically dire the situation has become.

April 9, 2019 @ 9:31 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - yeah, i am sure it was not going to be the greatest per se for true connoisseurs. but my older sister has wanted to go since last year, so it was more to keep her company (as youngest sister has exams). still if she does see them, she'd rather see some kinda version than never seeing them i think. like when i saw hall and oates and realized hall really cannot hit those high notes anymore (because, duh) - at least it's still him and oates together!

April 9, 2019 @ 10:10 AM

Totally understandable. Good chance that this might be their final full-length tour, so time is obviously
running out to see them in any configuration. As for Hall & Oates, I was as equally bothered by their
too-safe setlist and a few glaring omissions as much as by Mr. Daryl's diminished lung capacity!! Even
when I saw them 12 years previous at Casino Rama, the situation was pretty much the same, complete with an even shorter set list as they were in the opening act position.

April 9, 2019 @ 10:15 AM

Going to the Danforth in a few weeks to see Todd Rundgren. One of my guitar heroes. Hes now 70 and I havent see him in at least ten years so I'm not sure what to expect but I'm going to go like you JJ. It could be the last time.

April 9, 2019 @ 10:30 AM

Probably an inadvertent pun on your part, but I'm sure that you're aware that he and Utopia released
an awesome tune called "The Very Last Time" on their "Adventures In Utopia" album in late 1979.

April 9, 2019 @ 10:34 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - they definitely could have done some more songs the last time i saw them too. all i could afford as a souvenir is a live from daryl's house mug that has possible traces of lead paint in it lmao, and a tank top! the diminished lung capacity along with the ravages of time will happen to us all i suppose haha.

wade - yes, exactly. also, there is a version of I Saw the Light with Todd and Daryl on YouTube- performed I think at Todd's super gorgeous Hawaii home? Definitely give that a listen if you haven't - I adore it.

April 9, 2019 @ 11:27 AM

Seek out the 2003 trio recording from Hall & Oates/Todd Rundgren of "Someday We'll Know" ( a cover
of a New Radicals track from 1998. Excellent version). Todd also produced H & O's vastly underrated
glam rock album "War Babies" from late 1974.

April 9, 2019 @ 11:55 AM

Forgot to mention above that about a half hour ago I was snacking once again at the KFC location
outside of Dufferin Mall and on their satellite radio channel I was fortunate enough to hear the
one-two powerful combination of Kool and the Gang's awesome "Joanna" (my fave all-time track
of theirs, complete with a triumphant trombone solo from Clifford Adams) and then Todd Rundgren's
landmark example of Blue-Eyed-Soul "Hello It's Me". Hard to believe that he still hasn't been selected
for long-overdue-entry into the largely pointless Rock and Roll Hall of Shame.

April 9, 2019 @ 12:05 PM

basement dweller and jj,

glad that there are still some fans out there. Yes. Adventures in Utopia was a fine album and JJ, I have enjoyed the Todd @ Daryl's house episode on Youtube a few times. It is excellent! And what a spread Daryl has if I remember correctly!

April 9, 2019 @ 12:23 PM

And don't forget Mr T.'s excellent career as a producer, especially his work with The Tubes in '79
and '85, although the former album is a lot better than the latter!! "Skylarking" (1986) by XTC also
greatly benefited from his deft touch.

April 9, 2019 @ 12:27 PM

And we cant forget that he produced, sang backup vocals and played guitar on Bat out of Hell. Which featured his famous motorcycle riff on the guitar.

April 9, 2019 @ 12:46 PM

Quite right, not to mention his vocal contributions to both follow-up Bat albums as well!!

April 9, 2019 @ 12:54 PM

wade - Daryl has a great house too, but the view in Hawaii is truly gorgeous.

bsmntdwllr73 - I will definitely check that out!

April 9, 2019 @ 1:32 PM

When time permits, also do yourself a big musical favour and go on Youtube/Spotify and search
for Todd R.'s incredible 1989 album "Nearly Human", especially the tracks "The Want Of A Nail",
"Parallel Lines" and "The Waiting Game". Very reminiscent of Hall & Oates' music from the mid-1970s,
as well as a lot of Todd's early solo work.

April 9, 2019 @ 1:50 PM

basement dweller.
i saw him perform this album live in a tux at some place in Mississauga ( The Spectrum perhaps?) when it came out. It was weird not seeing him play a guitar that night but Lyle Workman did the lead that evening and he was great! Anyways. Great to converse with another Todd fan. Its getting hard to find them these days. Hence, my purchase of only one ticket for the show!

April 9, 2019 @ 2:45 PM

Bourgeois Tagg (with L. Workman) on guitar was another underrated mid-to-late eighties band
produced by Todd. Their 1987 album "Yoyo" was a nice piece of quirky, Beatle-esque pop in
places, especially the first single "I Don't Mind At All." P.S, Utopia played Massey Hall last spring,
but Roger Powell wasn't involved.

April 9, 2019 @ 2:53 PM

Buckingham had to have emergency heart surgery earlier this year, and it also damaged his vocal cords. This was well after Nicks' "him or me" ultimatum, but anyway people will have to settle for nothing or seeing a tribute band at some street festival or local Bier Markt.

April 9, 2019 @ 3:33 PM

Think I saw that particular group at last year's Taste of the Kingsway. Lots of Fl. Mac tribute bands
currently out there representing that classic sound far better than the current incarnation. There's
a semi-crazed dude on Youtube called "THE REAL MUSIC OBSERVER" who is beyond obsessed about
this band's drama, not to mention Journey, Chicago, Styx, Van Halen/Hagar, etc. Hasn't been the
same since he shut down comments about six weeks ago, but well worth checking out for
the repeated inanity of much of his commentary!! (Hmmm, he kinda reminds me of slightly-askewed
gent who regularly posts on this very blog. But far be it for me to ever toot my own dented horn!!!)

April 9, 2019 @ 3:44 PM

No wonder why your pool picks are hiding. As I said in earlier comment spread out top players for ALL teams that U think will make 2nd 3rd round. It's better to have a 2nd line player on a team that goes further than the best player on a team that U may think goes on further.
BTW my team that nobody chose until I did in 10th round was St. Louis as a sleeper. Only 1 TB player Point picked in 2nd round.

I have trouble keeping up with the 3 or 4 teams I root for, I can't imagine how someone roots for 15 teams.

Holy shit that's a good idea.

Mike could pick her up each morning and bring her to the TMDS studios.

I would listen to that for sure. C'mon Cheryl, do it!

We pick teams in our pools.

Random picks out of a hat.

I have Toronto in one, and Carolina in the other

I haven't thought of Todd Rundgren in years, since Andy Frost left the air waves anyways. Going to revisit his music this weekend. Thanks wade and B smntdweler73!

@ Beatts podcast with Cheryl ? It would take her an hour and 15 minutes just to name her favorite teams that day. Then another half an hour for her complaint of the day and how nothing is ever her fault. I doubt TM could handle the extra hydro costs.

All of a sudden Cheryl has a new MY team - Tampa Bay. Not surprised.
Out in 1st round against CBJ which my 2nd cousin plays for.

@Mike, to be deleted, I thought you were going to tell us you found Ben out doing yard work and was healthy as a horse.
Looking forward to his appearance when that occurrs!

If that happened, I'd probably save him the embarrassment and keep it off the pod. :)

Excited about the Doug Smith episode even though I had no idea he was going to be on this week.

Can you please ask him what has been his favourite era to cover the Raptors in?

I bet he enjoyed covering the team more when they were bad relative to the last 6 years when there has been little controversy.

Doug was waiting for the Raps practice schedule to be announced before commiting to a time. Even as I type it's not 100% because I just found out I'm in Markham this afternoon for a dancing competition. Whoop!

No problem Rick C. I'm anxious for the show. I'm sure it will be great.
