Jays and Donaldson getting uglier by the day. I dont think he gets a QO if he is still a jay at seasons end.

I found a BiWay plastic bag that looks different from the one in your Twitter thing.

I'm not first. Oh well. My Indians won yesterday. That's great. Mike Clevinger pitched a gem. My Diamondbacks won as well. Well, Labour Day weekend is here. I used to hate this weekend because it meant going back to boarding school. I hated going to boarding school. Well, now I'm just a retired person so this weekend doesn't bother me anymore.

What is that store in the Leafs/Raptors arena called now, and how many times has it changed its name?

August 31, 2018 @ 8:38 AM

Wefewee

Good Morning!
So hard to believe it’s the end of August.
The blogs that I read on an ongoing basis are:
Toronto Mike
Toronto Sports Media
Howard Berger’s Between The Posts
Elliott’s Friedman’s 30 thoughts
Awful Announcing
Deadspin
The Player’s Tribune
Brioux.tv
While working, I would most often check for updates and read these on my lunch. Now that I’m retired, I have more time and wonder if the kind folks that post here have any suggestions for other blogs that may be interesting.
Many thanks!

@ HOE

It is now the Scotiabank Arena. This is only the second name since it was constructed as an arena for the in 1999.

I don't like the change but it has only been once in 20 years. It's not like the old days but not terrible.

August 31, 2018 @ 8:47 AM

H.o.E.

@McNulty -
I meant the name of the store in the lobby that sells Leafs, Raptors, and TFC merchandise, not the name of the arena.

@Mike yes that is a pretty epic thread. Even though I never really shopped at BiWay it brought back quite few memories. i never thought of my Knob Hill basket as nostalgia i just find it useful to organize some of the shit in my trunk LOL.

Re your Rockpile tweet -- Acts like Killer Dwarfs and Anvil still play there once every few months; Anvil just sometime in the last couple of weeks, and KillerDwarfs some time earlier this year. They had a young singer named Priya Panda join them for 'Dirty Weapons' in the encore -- if I was you, I might be inclined to invite her to my house -- for a podcast interview, I mean.

About an hour or so ago, Stu Jeffries made a very heartfelt and impassioned
plea live on Boom 97.3 for the recent and seemingly-endless gun violence
in the city to stop. Kudos not only to the station for allowing this to happen,
but to Stu as well for his bravery and composure around a very difficult subject
matter. Probably wouldn't hear something like that on any other commercial music
station.

And now on a much less sombre note: Last night I was listening to Leonard
Cohen's infamous 1977 "Death of a Ladies' Man" album (considered by many
to be the nadir of his career!), and when I came upon track 6, "Don't Go Home
With Your Hard-On", it put a very rare smile on my recently quite scowly face!!
This album was a collaborative effort with Phil Spector, and it ultimately makes
as much sense (in print, anyway!) as his 1980 collaboration with The Ramones,
"End of the Century." Somehow, despite the pre-requisite over-the-top, Wall-of-
Sound production style that makes Springsteen's "Born To Run" single sound
like an outtake from "Nebraska", it totally works! Highly recommended for folks
with a high tolerance for kitsch and questionable punnery/single entendres.
Deep Purple's tender "Knocking At Your Back Door" is very Dylanesque by
comparison!!!

Saw New Order last night at Budweiser Stage. Twas a great show, and I love the venue, but every time I go there I wanna hang myself. I live downtown. The venue is just west of downtown...ergo..not very far from me. The time it took me last night is the equivalent I typically drive to the cottage in Gravenhurst. GRAVEN-FUCKING-HURST.

Rush hour traffic? Check
Ed Sheeran? Check.
CNE? Check.
Poor planning on SEVERAL FRONTS? Check.

My evening started off pleasantly enough however. Began with refreshments at Betty's at King/Sherbourne. Told taxi driver to take Richmond west. He insisted Lakeshore. Last time I let that happen. Bailed out of taxi while he stewed in his own stinking idling juices under he Gardner around Yonge. Hopped on a bikeshare to Queen's Quay and Bathurst, then flagged another cab to venue.

I've got two upcoming concerts to Budweiser Stage in the next couple of months, so next time, I'm thinking bikeshare all the way there..but it's a risky move..there's only bikeshare station at and around ontario place, and if it's full when you arrive, you're fooked. And, even if you check availability of docks on the app en route, the situation could change in seconds.

So this leaves with 2 options, and a question for the hivemind. Option 1: Swim. Option 2: Does anyone know if water taxi's (at harbourfront) will drop you near Budweiser stage, and if so, at what cost? Actually scratch that..cost don't matter if it saves me the hell which is that commute again..

The CF-18 I saw in Brantford on Wedenesday is flying over Toronto now.
I don't think the Lancaster and B-29 will be in the Toronto show, but the USAF Thunderbirds will apparently be making their only appearance this year outside the U.S.

Ryan G - boourns to that traffic. Luckily my stuff has been starting 8pm or later, so I have missed the traffic. I did do the Bandshell last week Wednesday and I drove, but I also parked at Liberty Village and walked in :/ The GPS always tries to take me via the core/richmond st but I stay on the gardiner, way better. Next time, I'd say eat in Liberty Village and walk over to Budwiser :)

Mike, I guess shopping at Bi-Way wasn't used as an insult when you went to elementary/middle school?

Being accused of shopping there was one of the biggest insults directed at you during that time period for me (mid to late 1990s) especially if you didn't wear name brand clothes or were a visible minority.

It was a dumb insult because they were great stores, I liked the underground locations. My local one was the one at Parkway Mall but before I had a chance to grow up and not associate the store with petty insults, they all closed down.

The plastic bag parade has been a wonderful trip down memory lane. I'm 54, from central Ontario, and I remember all those places. And yes, I had North Star running shoes! My mom and I shopped in BiWay all the time.

Mom also was a big Dominion shopper when I was a little 'un, then she went over to Miracle Mart later on.

August 31, 2018 @ 2:25 PM

Urooj Islam

@Toronto Mike

I've read that blog entry and your various thoughts about the infamous rogue Bi-Way. I don't know, your posts made the insults associated with the chain seem more playful than they were when my experience with them was that they were not. I saw multiple fights and heated arguments that stemmed from them.

Also, the same happened over the "Everything for a Dollar Store" but most dollar store insults were just linked to the proverbial dollar store and not any particular chain like the Bi-Way insults.

August 31, 2018 @ 2:39 PM

bsmntdwllr73

As a kid I didn't mind shopping at Bi-Way, Bargain Harolds, Woolco/Woolworths. I was simply
happy to get new clothes/shoes etc. and didn't give a shit, then or now, about labels. Sure, i
received more than my fair share of unwanted verbal abuse, but I would've have been equally
picked upon if I had tried to dress in a more timely and trendy fashion. The expression 'lipstick
on a pig' comes to mind! And I was quite the little piggy before my late teens growth spurt. One
thing is for certain: Rod Stewart will most obviously never sing "You Wear It Well" about me for many reasons : least of all, 'cause I'm a super-hairy dude!!).

August 31, 2018 @ 2:48 PM

bsmntdwllr73

Seems a lot of folks on here are some classic bag hoarders!! I try to limit my hoarding to music
and paper stuffs (books, magazines, newspapers, comic books, 'adult' publications, etc.). Ya know,
the kinda routine stuff under which one day my sunlight-deprived and nutrient-deficient body will be found. A whole season or two of A&E's Hoarders and Intervention under one dank, debris-filled rooming house basement. Happy long weekend, everyone!!!

August 31, 2018 @ 3:07 PM

Urooj Islam

@bsmntdwllr73

Tell these folks that plastic bags are bad for the environment! Even cool, retro plastic bags!

August 31, 2018 @ 3:23 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Urooj Islam
Again, you're absolutely right as always. But the countless number of
trees I have inadvertently caused to be cut down due to my compulsive
hoarding ways,doesn't exactly make me the ideal candidate!! Then again,
better me than someone completely inappropriate like Ted Nugent! People:
PLASTIC BAGS AREN'T GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!!! (Even retro
kitschy ones!!). AND HUG A TREE FOR GOOD MEASURE, TOO!! Now,
kindly do excuse me, as I have a date with an off-brand dollar store to buy
a couple of aerosol fresheners in order to keep my 'loo reeking of lavender!
Not-so-fun-fact: Kind of a pointless endeavour, really, as there has been a
gigantic hole in the middle of said john's ceiling for nearly a year at this point.

Retro plastic bags - Steinburg's (became Miracle Food Mart), Towers (became Zellers), A & A's (beside Sams Records), Bata Shoes, Food City, K Mart, Beckers, Macs Milk, Woolworths, Kresge's, Music World & more I can't remember now. Shopped at all of these venues during my lifetime.
Kresge's had the best in store lunch counter in Weston in 1960's.

@dale

The Zellers that closed in my location not too long ago had an awesome lunch counter too.

bsmntdwllr73, when I was growing up in Scarborough (McCowan and Eglinton) (late 60's/early 70's) being told you got your clothes at Bargain Harolds, or even further back Sayvettes at Danforth and Eglinton, was a popular school yard taunt.
Boo Boo's on Danforth was actually a cool response to these school yard taunts, I guess better manufacturing quality control put an end to this outlet, as producing a flawed product for resale was not a very profitable model.
@ Ryan G, I feel your pain, I have come to loathe Toronto traffic, having lamented about a 2.5 hour trip to Trinity Bellwoods park and back to Oakville a couple of Saturdays ago. I really appreciate my out of town trips, even to Ottawa which is a walk in the park. This past week, was Sudbury, total crosstown commute at it's worst was 10-15 minutes.
I am 5-6 years out from retirement and really thinking deep about not being in the GTA when this time comes.

August 31, 2018 @ 9:26 PM

@Dale, my motherin law worked at the SS Kresge's in Eglinton square for about 20 years, complete with lunch counter, and hardwood floors. It was an era where you could work a retail job and still afford to buy a very basic semi detached house.

Yes, my Indians got Josh Donaldson. They don't need him. Apparently, all he can play is third base. My Indians don't need another third baseman. They have my Jose. Well, my Indians won last night. That's great. Corey Kluber pitched a gem. Edwin Encarnacion hit a home run. Unfortunately my Orioles and Diamondbacks lost though.

September 1, 2018 @ 7:23 AM

bsmntdwllr73

I loved the lunch counters at Kresge's and Woolco/Woolworths back in the day. Always enjoyed their
burger combo and the pudding or jello for dessert. McDonald's in Wal-Mart simply doesn't cut it,
folks!! Regardless, if these chains still existed here they'd probably be offering up a more diverse and
healthier assortment of menu items. Hypothetically, no thank you!

September 1, 2018 @ 9:45 AM

Cheryl

My teams sucked last night. My Indians, Orioles, and Diamondbacks all lost. This is no good at all, but that's what happened. Justin Beber pitched well for my Indians, but then they blew it. He all of a sudden lost control. Well, my Jose is going to play second base while Josh Donaldson plays third. Donaldson has been hurt all year. I mean what is he going to do. Maybe he's not ready to play yet. Who knows. I have no idea.

My Orioles and Diamondbacks also lost. Why do they all have to fricken lose? Well, football next weekend. My Ravens play the Bills. The Steelers play my Browns in Cleveland. The Redskins are at my Cardinals. I hope it will be a great football year.

I donated as well. Mike said that he didn't see it so I forwarded him the receipt that I got. My friend had to do it for me because of the stupid capcha. Remember to talk to them, Mike. Tell them that the capcha is a major accessibility issue. If they don't want to get rid of it, then make a phone line available so disabled people can call and donate by phone. I can't believe there are people who don't give a damn about the disabled. Terry will turn over in his grave if he ever found out. Well, baseball sucked last night again. My Indians lost. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost. I'm tired of everyone losing all the time. Josh Donaldson still isn't playing. I don't like him anyway. Still on the DL. My Indians got damaged goods. That's what they got. So he apparently hit a grand slam in the minors. That doesn't mean anything. Donaldson is done. Believe me. He won't fricken help.

I saw two great gigs at the CNE over the weekend. Caught Kansas at the Bandshell on Saturday night
and although 70% of the crowd presumably only knew their two biggest hits ("Dust In the Wind", "Carry On Wayward Son"), people really seemed to be totally into it. The mass volume of alcohol consumed probably didn't hurt matters much, either!! On Sunday I saw a local Rush tribute band cleverly called "Crush" at the midway stage and they were beyond incredible. This is the side project of a local prog metal band called Pyramid Theorem, and the dude in the Alex Lifeson role also handled lead vocals, which is quite impressive when you consider how complex the guitar work is. Then again, Geddy Lee handled bass, keyboards and vocals simultaneously for decades!

I wish I'd thought of that.

Good grief what a stupid thing to wake up this morning.

September 4, 2018 @ 12:48 PM

H.o.E.

That Rush tribute act was a little better than what I had expected.
It seems these acts playing the evening spot at the Midway stage are required to fill a 3-hour slot with 3 separate sets of 40 minutes each, so they might have to have some more songs rehearsed than at another regular shorter show (they did 2 of their own songs, and Crossroads, and Summertime Blues -- which Rush actually did record for an EP). 'Elton Rohn' last year did several album tracks they probably don't play at most shows, and a year or two before apparently a Kiss tribute act did every song except one from 'Alive', and much more.

The best thing about conservative groups/individuals boycotting something is that it always backfires in a big way, e.g. the popularity of The Simpsons, NYPD Blue, Friends, Family Guy, rap, Harry Potter, WWF/E, the play Hamilton, Star Wars films, Black Panther, the Teletubbies, etc etc all exploded after conservative/Christian outrage. I bet secretly companies and entertainment entities crave such a boycott, which only results in more people being aware of them, earning untold millions in free publicity.

Just picked up tomorrow's edition of Now Magazine and was quite disturbed to read the slight
message from the rag's founder and editor-in-chief, Alice Klein, that the publication, now merely as-thick-as a street-preacher's-pamphlet, was eliminating its long-standing sex ads from its back pages (not to be confused with Bob Dylan's entirely different Back Pages, mind you!!). Never had any reason, $$$, or inclination to use such services, but always felt a little freer knowing that they were always there if needed. If memory serves, Now went to court more than a few times defending its right to post such ads, so I find it more than a little hypocritical/suspicious to see their sudden elimination this many months into the MeToo scandal(s). A more likely story is that they weren't as financially lucrative as in decades past. On the bright side, Now will probably soon join the Village Voice in the digital graveyard, not long after its own inevitable online-only edition fails. So there's that! But thank goodness Dan Savage is still being published. Nothing like reading 'bout the kinky sexual exploits of real people with real adult lives before I prematurely go to bed!!

I'm not going to that thing on September 12. Quit bugging me about it. Unless I'm going to get paid, I'm not making a speech. My Indians won yesterday. That's great. It was close, but Corey Kluber pitched a gem. My Orioles lost though. That's no good. My Diamondbacks didn't play.

Hi Mike. I just started reading John Gallagher's book because I like biographies and your past interview with him made it sound interesting. I'm on chapter 9 or 10, and it just seems to be a collection of random stories of meeting celebrities, sleeping with lots of women, and trashing/praising other sportscasters. There doesn't seem to be a linear storyline; it's like he drank a whole bunch of red bull and started writing random stuff down. Does it get better, or is the book basically a bunch of locker room talk/bragging? I got it from the library so I don't have to finish it (although I hate leaving things unfinished).

I believe I described it as sex, drugs and rock n' roll until the final chapter.

Skip ahead and read the final chapter.

@mdoucette77 THANK YOU....

That's been his whole shtick his whole career. He's a blowhard.

@Mike, thanks! Will do. I'll read a bit more until the ebook is about to be deleted, then read the last one!

@Beatts, yeah I got that vibe from his interviews, just thought maybe the book would mix the stories with a linear biography, but I guess not. Kind of fits his shtick

@mdoucette77,

I couldn't deal with all the bragging either and gave up. I don't think I made it even as far as you. But I guess I'll skip to the final chapter as per Mike's advice and be done with it.

bsmntdwllr73 - you can sell sex pretty much everywhere now, i doubt the NOW back pages were the first place anyone is going for sex in 2018. I hope they can keep the print version up and running, but I think you're right that their time will come.

Meanwhile, my brother and his partner/wife/my sister in law/ actually his girlfriend - had their baby on Tuesday night. A beautiful girl, super cute. We went to visit at St Joseph's - (the commute sucked, never should have gotten off the Gardiner to go across Lakeshore :/) but it was worth it, she's adorable, and parents look happy and relaxed!

Congrats JJ !!!

Beatts - thank you! I held her for a little, and my brother asked if I'd ever held a newborn LOL.

I have, they're just sooo tiny that I avoid doing so until they are a little bigger.

This is just the beginning for your brother! Soon he'll be having a bunch more, start up a podcast in his basement and begin to mispronounce common words!

Sad day for Mike Wilner. He's going to be devastated.

What happened with Mike Wilner?

What about Gibby also?

I think this is the not-so-surprising news that Gibby is gone at the end of the year.

Did I mention I biked by him this summer? He was walking along Queens Quay with headphones on. I learned later that it was his birthday.

A very hearty congratulations to you and your entire family on the recent birth of your
latest niece. Very happy to know that St. Joe's is available as a back-up neighbourhood hospital (along with the southern CAMH campus!), when my inevitable mental and physical breakdowns simultaneously occur in the not-too-distant future!! #parkdaleweak

@Mike
Feeling very blessed today to have discovered that the one and only 12:36 provided a link to my
comment from last night 'bout Now Magazine dropping their adult ads from their print edition.
Felt good to briefly be a small part of the Twitterverse, however ephemeral it ultimately turned out
to be. (Old news by the time I was able to see it this morning, LOL!!). Hmm, now if only there was
still a place in print where a fella could find a little bit o'company to celebrate his brief online non-
infamy!!!

Why a sad day for Mike Wilner?

September 6, 2018 @ 4:11 PM

Mike before I accept, I will provide you with my contract rider. It has been written and approved by my Linkedin Legal team of Perry, Monaco and Kaczynski.

Pretty standard contract, nothing to get worked up about, although the white linen's in my dressing room must be crisp.

@Toronto Mike

Wilner's affinity for Gibbons goes beyond love.

Was seeing Gibbons out in public like when you saw your teachers in the wild as a kid? A figure of great authority in their job but out of it, it's very weird to see them as a civilian.

Gibby had his ups & downs. Fired many years ago & then hired back.
A good manger with the players he was dealt with last & this year. If gone as mgr., I'm sure he will be offered to be back by BJays in another capacity. Everyone inclding me loves GIBBY,

It will be well worth the drive from Acton, although I guess you don't actually live in Acton!

I never felt a baseball manager was particularly significant, but I also never felt Gibbons was a very good baseball manager.

@bsmntdwllr73 unfortunately we have been unable to come to terms on a few rider items and under advisement of Kaczynski of Perry, Monaco and Kaczynski I will be unable to preform.

All ticket refunds are available at point of sale.
