Not today Cheryl.

I'm first again. Goody goody gumballs. Well, my Coyotes lost. That was no good at all. Baseball sucked except my Orioles did win. My Indians and Diamondbacks lost. Tonight I have my Cavs playing my Suns. Well, my Suns aren't in the playoffs. My Cavs clinched a playoff spot. My Cavs will win tonight. Also hopefully my Nets will win as well. My Nets won't make the playoffs, but I really really need them to win anyway. I don't like getting junk mail bugging me to sell my place. If I want to sell, I will contact them, but otherwise just leave me alone. I do not need junk mail. We should save the trees. Paper comes from trees.

Your crazy conspiracy theory of the week:

Bobcat is now doing long-form 'deep dive' interviews on Mondays, kind of like the ones done on Toronto Mike'd...a show he continues to decline. Coincidence? OR did he just steal Mike's idea for his own and refuses to support the competition?

@Al The Royal Pain

For 5.5 years I've been saying we need more long-form deep dive interviews. The MSM is feeding us marshmallows and Twinkies when we're starving for proper nourishment.

I'm not arrogant enough to think I influenced McCown's Monday programming, but I'm glad it now exists.

March 23, 2018 @ 8:41 AM

I'm first! Yippee!

Ken Daniels should be a great guest. I have no specific questions for him, but would like to offer my appreciation for his recent open, honest talk about his son and how Jamie was let down by the for-profit agencies that prey on vulnerable patients. Hearing the story was heart-wrenching, but also opened my eyes (and I'm sure many others' as well) about a broken system that needs fixing, and the need for vigilance at a time when people need help the most.

Assuming I don't screw it up, Ken's episode should be something very special.

If Bobcat starts having Kick out the Jams episodes, then we'll know for sure.

The deep dive on PTS does seem suspiciously similar to mikes cast. Hmmm
I listened to some of the show on Monday with Don Meehan it was pretty interesting.
Not TO Mike interesting of course but not bad.

On a another note this past weekend was the start of the MOTOGP season with a win for Ducati and a third for Rossi both of which make me happy.

And for all of you wondering where spring is I have finally ordered tires for my bike and should have them and my rebuilt brake calipers installed by next Saturday. Spring should arrive a few hours afterward.

It had better anyway or I'll be taking it down like Donald trump would take Down Joe Bidon.

March 23, 2018 @ 12:11 PM

James Edgar - LOL that spring is coming as soon as you're gotten the tires on and the repairs done!

if that was the case i'd throw on my best pair of summer shorts and do a quick dance outside for summer (for the good of us all :D)

The first time in years, I decided to listen/watch the Tim and Sid show. I was a HUGE fan of the podcast back in the day and enjoyed their afternoon show.

I was well aware of what they do. Maybe it's because I'm older now and my tastes are different, but man is Sid ever annoying. He has good opinions no doubt but he clearly tries to hard....he made some fart reference and I was like, "are you trying to be stupid for the sake of being stupid?".

of course I was only half-kidding about the Bobcat stealing your format, certainly it isn't anything new, and Bob himself has done many long-form interviews in the past...BUT...I wouldn't discredit the impact of podcasts like TO Mike'd and Richard Dietch's SI Media Podcast (on which he DID appear) in showing PTS that there is more than just a little appetite for a more long-form interview show in a time where everything seems to be going in the opposite direction.

March 23, 2018 @ 1:32 PM

Al The Royal Pain

@James Edgar,

Listening to Bob's first 'Spotlight On' show with Richard Peddie, and then this week with Don Meehan was very reminiscent of Mike's Podcast. The big difference was that the PTS show sounded more like a chat between two contemporaries with many shared experiences, as opposed to Mike, who is asking questions we might all want answered as fans.

I enjoy both angels.

Since there were 2,547 comments on AM 640 on that bullshit shift change thread, I need your input.

This morning I talked with Supriya about a story out of Norway of how there is a cohort of young, angry males who seem shut out of post-secondary spots and lost jobs....blah, blah, men now falling behind. I mentioned on-air that I would like my 10 year old stepson to have a male teacher who doesn't consider fidgetting, inattentive behaviour to be anything strange. He's a ten year old boy. I also said we're pumped that next year his teacher(s) will be males....two teachers his older brother still adores from Grade 4.

I came home and my wife had just hung up on a phone call from the kid's TWO teachers (one's French immersion). They did not hear the segment, they were "told" about it and the harangued my wife, who didn't hear because she was prepping the kid for school, about my insulting them and they wanted a meeting and apology. I have a direct office line, Twitter account and email. They called her on our home phone line and blasted me.

I got home and mom was obviously upset. I called the principal and she said we should initiate "a restorative process". Fuck that. They should be disciplined. How have we let these low grade freaking intellectuals to become such coparents? Can you imagine the charges I'd face if I was pissed about a female teacher and called them at home? This shit has to end and you GenX/Millennium parents have empowered these civil servants.

Rant Over. How about those genetic freaks, the Raptors?

@ Neil Clarke Warren

"Form your own opinion of the team owner and sole broadcast rights owner."

Outside of people's curiosity, why is it you think we should have been told already? I can't see how it reflects poorly on Rogers. It's actually rather meaningless whether they tell us now or six days from now.

They likely know internally what they want to do. And it's been almost exclusively Wagner and Wilner most of the spring, so it seems as those two have roles -- we just don't know what their exact roles are, or if a former player will be in the booth too.

The fact that they haven't announced it might simply be that there are negotiations going on ... and there could be a number of reasons why such negotiations haven't been finalized.

I don't think we're entitled to have an answer before the situation is completely settled.

Remember, they didn't have a lot of time to figure out what they're doing. Jerry retired just before spring training, at a time when they were deciding how to replace Zaun. And don't think that the latter situation doesn't have repercussions, too. They are likely vetting the crap out of everyone they consider, so that they don't wind up with another sexual harasser. There hasn't been a lot of time for them to audition, vet, negotiate, etc.

When you look at a satellite view, you can see how large of an area is being sold by Bombardier.

From all the articles about it, it seems unavoidable that any potential buyers will want it to become just another part of the city, a grid of streets with houses, condos, and big box stores. But is there anything more interesting it could become that would need that large of an area? Maybe a giant amusement park? Would that supposed new Amazon HQ2 want or need to operate its own airport?

@Stafford, teaching, the one profession that has a huge gender imbalance that you never hear spotlighted.
When I was in grade 4 I got my first male teacher, Mr. Gillies and to this day I remember how he understood male rambunctiousness, and only dropped the discipline hammer when you really got out of line. Never sent anyone to the principals office, and the kids had immense respect for him.

The teachers conduct of calling your home, totally out of line, especially if they didn't hear it directly.
Check them out and see if they hit the sunshine list ;).

Coming up on cell phone upgrade time. Actually, I've had the option for quite some time, but I wait for the upgrade fee to be nominal because it's ridiculously expensive enough as it is. I have the Sony Xperia Z5 and I love it, so I am going for the XZ1. A fiend who works for Bell recommended the Z5 and now she has the XZ1. I've had both HTC and Samsung (Gal 4) in the modern cell phone era and while I liked both, Sony seems to suit me best.

I will definitely be checking out the Ken Daniels pod this weekend, along with Gord and 12:36.

@Mike: You gotta try to find out what happened between Tara Slone and Dean Blundell. This goes back years and years when Blundell worked at the Edge. I remember him saying that she didn't like him for some reason or she was pissed at him, then when Joy Drop were in studio he apologized to her on air.

March 23, 2018 @ 11:25 PM

Well, my Cavs won last night over my Suns. Great game. I really hope my Cavs go deep in the playoffs. Unfortunately, my Nets didn't win. They were winning most of the game, but they blew it. My Nets can't close out games. My Habs finally won for a change. That's great. In baseball, my Orioles won. My Indians won over my Diamondbacks. My Orioles, Indians, and Diamondbacks will all be in first place where they belong. I don't know why it didn't show any comments when I logged on yesterday. That's why I thought I was first.

March 24, 2018 @ 7:30 AM

Someone not liking Dean Blundell? Can’t be! Whatever happened to that guy anyway? Does he still work in radio?

March 24, 2018 @ 8:39 AM

Might I suggest 2 episodes with her? A "normal" interview first and then an Alternative Bedtime Hour style KOTJ. Maybe an on air resignation from your podcast at the end?? :-)

Blind Dave, I have had a number of smartphones, as have my sons. I have enjoyed my Sony phones the most. They have had the best operation as phones (something that some brands function less well at), which is important when you live in a suburban area with crappy signal strength (all the major networks, being down by the Lake Ontario shore is the issue), but they have had excellent cameras and photo software, along with top-quality audio on their media players. My Samsung Galaxy S3's two built-in media players were awful that I actually spent money on an audio player that had a "true" 10 band equalizer. By "true", I mean one that, when you add in one band it does not compensate by cutting in another. I now have that on my Sony phone, which makes the overall audio even better. It's interesting to see the differences in the settings to get what sounds reasonably the same between the two phones with the same headphones. The biggest problem with not buying a Samsung or iPhone is finding a truly good brand name protective case.

Glad to know you have good experiences with Sony as well. My friend at Bell told me I was definitely a Sony guy once she had tried it and liked it. I do agree about the protective cases. I had an awesome Otterbox for my Samsung. The case made the phone 3x larger but I sure as hell appreciated the protection. For my Z5 I went with a good quality back and a screen protector that so far havedone the job. No scratches or cracks on the phone (yet).

March 24, 2018 @ 2:02 PM

My Habs lost again. That's no good. Why can't they keep winning? My Coyotes also lost which is no good at all. It sucks. My Suns also lost. Well, my Orioles and Diamondbacks lost, but my Indians won yesterday. Now my Cavs play my Nets this afternoon. I am hoping for my Cavs. My Cavs need all the wins they can get. Go Cavs.

The Leafs need 7 points in 7 games to have their best regular season ever. The Raptors need 3 wins in 9 games to have their best regular season ever. Combined with the championships won by the Argos and TFC, tough to argue that this isn't the best year in Toronto sports history.

Even the Blue Jays can't ruin this.

But I will point out that back in '47, when there was just the Leafs and Argos, both won their respective championships, making it pound-for-pound the best season in Toronto sports. :)

bsmntdwllr73 (a.k.a. McDonald's Boy!)

I just finished watching the Barenaked Ladies' 'highlights' on last night's Juno Awards telecast. Very
nice and thankfully brief induction speech from Geddy Lee and their speeches were very heartfelt,
but very rough vocals during their brief song at the end of that segment! As for their finale performance, not a fan at all of "One Week" and if I never hear that 'Kraft Dinner'(!) song again it will be too soon, but totally understandable why they went with those two. Truthfully, my interest in the band totally waned after the second album, which I thought was great but it did only 20 percent of the business "Gordon" did in Canada and was seen as a commercial disappointment (200,000 copies sold vs. 1 million). In my not so humble opinion "Jane" was the perfect pop song, and perhaps in an alternative pocket universe it was more successful and the band continued on in that direction. Now I guess we just have to sit back and wait for the inevitable $$ reunion, even if it takes another 5 to 10 years and several bankruptcies and divorces to occur!!

March 26, 2018 @ 9:52 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@McDonald's Boy

I think those two songs were the obvious choices because they feature both Ed and Steven on vocals.

So many of their other songs were one or the other, usually Steven!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:20 AM

Steven Page was the heart and soul of BNL and will always be so even in absentia. I could
never really warm up to Ed Robertson's voice. Still, any Junos without Hedley are a win for the
both the Canadian Music Industry/CARAS as well as the public. The only other performance I've
checked out so far online is Lights, and that woman needs to eat a sandwich or three and fast!!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:28 AM

bsmntdwllr73 (a.k.a. McDonald's Boy!) - I have to watch it today!!!

i listened to some of their music on the commute today, forgot how nice Call and Answer is - but Mike is right, their songs are either Ed or Steven.

My sister said she hopes they reunite, I told her that is highly unlikely!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:32 AM

Well, they'd better do it soon 'cause they are getting on in years and so are a lot of their fans!!!
Steven Page is currently touring U.S. bars/nightclubs and according to statistics on Setlist FM,
most of the songs performed are covers from other artists. Hope he lucks out in his pursuit
of obtaining serious scratch from that Big Bang Theory theme lawsuit!!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:35 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

A couple of things on this topic...

On the recent Toronto Mike'd with Marc from 12:36 we had a friendly bet about whether BNL will reunite or if this was a one-off. I feel like it's a one-off and a reunion is definitely not imminent.

And if you heard my episode with Chris Murphy from Sloan you'll remember that Steven Page was part of the Trans-Canada Highwaymen supergroup. That's a fun project.

March 26, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

I would hope that at least 75% of the upcoming Ralph Benmergui episode will include
an intense Deep Dive into the trainwreck that was his CBC Late Night talk show!! Still, that
was a colossal success when compared to the steaming dung pile that was the infernal Mike
Bullard crapfest!!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

As for my comment about Steven Page's current activities, that crack about his recent U.S.
activities was more just veiled frustration on my part that this is what he is seemingly reduced
to. His post BNL activities have received very little promotional push compared to his former
bandmates' multitude of projects. This might be intentional on his part but he deserves so
much more!!

March 26, 2018 @ 10:45 AM

If BNL did reunite would their music even resonate in this day and age? I don't think so. Also, nice to see Pearl Wenjack take part in the Downie tribute. He'd have wanted that I think.

Funny side note. CFNY created the U-knows as a tongue in cheek poke at the Juno's in the 80's because they were so bland. Really shows you how far Canadian music has progressed in the past 35 years. Cities now actually WANT to host the Juno's. Good job Vancity, though I can imagine the traffic was hell cause of the red carpet.

March 26, 2018 @ 11:04 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - hope he does get some Big Bang $$$. I think the drug use must have been so bad that they made the decision, along with the arrest and such. Maybe things would not have been as bad IF his addiction had been able to have been managed? I am so curious about why it all ended. I love Steven's voice and hope he continues to have success.

Irv - If they reunited they would be able to do a nice cross country stint - not necessarily huge venues, but like Danforth Music Hall, or even a Budweiser Stage concert would be nice. I think people miss them, and who doesn't love a nostalgia concert :D

March 26, 2018 @ 11:13 AM

You're totally right about the inevitable non-resonance of BNL's music in this day and age, but
of course it would totally be an exercise in nostalgia and hopefully profitable pension planning
(what's that? LOL!!). It's not like any of BNL's music was getting much commercial traction the last
time Page was in the band back in the mid to late Aughts! And no, the kiddie and holiday albums
don't count!!

March 26, 2018 @ 11:13 AM

I miss the Fu Manchu'd and longer haired version of Steven Page from the "Maybe
You Should Drive" era of the band in 1994-95 (very Sgt. Pepperesque!!).

Don't forget, the Barenaked Ladies just did a sold out tour across the country without Steven Page. I saw them at a full and appreciative Massey Hall where they had their final show of the tour.

I know Massey Hall seats a little under 3000, but I doubt adding Steven Page suddenly bumps them up to 16000 seat Budweiser Stage, but what do I know?

March 26, 2018 @ 11:18 AM

BNL played the Molson Ampitheatre with Ben Folds Five about 5 years ago, didn't attend but
remember reading about it at the time. Now that would have been one concert where the
opening act would have been the better of the two bands (well, without Steven, anyway!!)

March 26, 2018 @ 11:29 AM

Mike you're right - not Budweiser LOL. I was thinking of my Hall and Oates show there...

Massey or Danforth for sure. I do remember when you went to see them, but of their set list I didn't know a lot of songs - maybe with SP they would do more things I know? haha. without him they are doing a-ok, so I believe there isn't any kinda full reunion in sight.

March 26, 2018 @ 11:29 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

They sure played the vast majorty of BNL hits:

Of course, Massey Hall is set to close for a few years, so venues like the Danforth Music Hall are going to be hopping for a bit. As will venues like The Sony Centre and Roy Thompson Hall...

March 26, 2018 @ 11:32 AM

A nostalgia tour makes the most sense anyway at least from a financial perspective. If they released a record it would have to be fan targeted.

As for the drug addiction, well there is no way to control a drug addiction. I don't know how bad his was, but it was likely the cause of the stress of fame, infighting, etc. They take a real toll on the lives of those surrounded by fame. He seems pretty matter of fact about his past which is actually a good sign from someone who was an addict (speaking as a guy who was married to a former addict). Acceptance is understanding. All I can say is good for him.

As for Million Dollars...I just cringed when the song was signed by a major label and re-released for pop radio. It just took out all the original soul of it. I can remember their record being for sale downtown when it was an indie. It was freaking impossible to get too

March 26, 2018 @ 11:34 AM

I know their some of radio singles - so the set list from that show a lot of it is foreign to me.
so maybe i wouldn't know many more songs even if Steven was there haha. But I am sure their shows are good, I saw Prozzak last year and knew wayyyyy less of their stuff.

March 26, 2018 @ 11:41 AM

Irv - definitely cannot control the addiction, but you can go to rehab, and do other things that work for you (if they do work) and maybe at the time Steven could not get to that level of acceptance with who he was and they couldn't work with him in that manner. I am glad he is at a place now where he can be matter of fact about it!

I agree, no need for an album - nostalgia tour 2020 here we come haha

March 26, 2018 @ 11:44 AM

Typically with addiction, the addict needs to acknowledge they have a problem and want to get help, otherwise it's useless. It's just the reality of drug addiction. The other reality is that addiction turns you into a monster. I'd venture to say that likely happened to Page. Accepting your ugly past is very difficult. The fact he speaks openly about it is a very GOOD and healthy sign he's accepted his past.

March 26, 2018 @ 12:00 PM

Irv - i agree 100%. Maybe part of the reason he doesn't want to rejoin is that band life could possibly feed his addiction/addictive behavior? man, to be a fly on the wall as this all went down!

March 26, 2018 @ 12:12 PM

Urooj Islam

Ed Robertson and Steven Page are both 47, definitely not even close to being too old to get the band back together in the day and age of bands that reunite with the members being in their 60s and 70s. Page's history with drugs is concerning, but no one in the band has any health issues so they have time.

And yes, it would have to be a nostalgia tour but that's what all reunion tours are.

I would love to see it, last night was amazing to see.

Great to hear Mike Wilner isn't going to replace Jerry Howarth! I am suddenly very excited about the Jays.

Like I said when Jerry retired, if Wilner was going to get the job, he would have been named the replacement right after Jerry retired but he wasn't, meaning that Rogers/The Fan didn't want him in the role.

Fantastic news!

March 26, 2018 @ 12:34 PM

@JJ. It's hard to say. Myself I wonder if some of the destruction came about because of Page's addiction. Having witnessed the monsters that people become with addiction first hand, it's something you have to see to understand. He seems to accept his past which is a good sign. I don't think you ever recover so much as you learn to accept it was a part of you. Whatever happened it must have been bad because they literally wouldn't speak directly to each other.

As for going forward musically, I think they point it out best in Lovers in a Dangerous Time (video). At the end everyone runs off to the rap/dance area of the record store while they're giving out autographs. BNL's music style fit in great in that era. Today, I just don't know. A tour obviously makes sense given how popular they were.

You gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

March 26, 2018 @ 1:21 PM

Brian from Burlington

I actually like Mike Wilner doing play by play. He's clearly studied the craft, and knows how to paint pictures with words quite well. Saying that, I've never enjoyed him on Jays talk or when dealing with the public. It's kind of a shame because a good Play by Play commentator is probably not getting the job because of a crappy manner of dealing with phone in callers and twitter users.

March 26, 2018 @ 1:27 PM

@Irv - I am loving your insight and in-depth responses. A girl loves a good paragraph response sometimes. Yes, I'd agree that if it made him a monster, even though he has accepted it, and they have - maybe they just cannot get over how bad he behaved towards them, and others. at the end of the day, once they are all happy that is what matters. a tour would definitely work, at any given time i think because nostalgia never fades. their music now does not fit in with the current scene, but they can keep recording and producing as long as they like because i am sure it works out for them!

@Urooj - they're not old at all, but i don't see that they will get back together, things just ended so weirdly. and it isn't like they really need each other to make music :s :s (i mean we love them, but really if Queen can tour with Adam Lambert then BNL can soldier on haha)

March 26, 2018 @ 1:27 PM

I lived with a former addict & I was a volunteer street outreach guy so I've seen addiction first hand, right in front of me. There was a time when I could smell the breath of someone and know what they were on.

I don't know the situation or the depth of Page's addiction. But I can tell you that addicts are both "prey and predators". They become notorious liars, thieves and people who act without thinking. The extremes they will go to just to get drugs is often shocking. Dope sickness & need is overwhelming. Watching someone come clean is like watching the devil be cast from someone's soul. If Page was anywhere near that I can see why the relationships might be strained. Not everyone can forgive the past. And I'm very sure Page himself probably lives with those memories on a daily basis.

March 26, 2018 @ 1:48 PM

Irv - yes, sounding like a very draining experience.

I just watched their performance, and the interviews they did before last night.

The band was interviewed separately from him, he and Ed Robertson hadn't spoken in 9-10 years.
The band was asked if it was a one-off to perform together, Ed said YES, and someone else said maybe, one day at a time. I am sitting here misty eyed as if it's my own relationship ending. *sigh*

My father was an addict in the mid 1980s for a two year period and then off and on in the early
1990s. He had been sober for a long time when he received in a liver transplant in the summer of
2002 but it didn't take and he had a long, six month drawn out final decline at Toronto General
Hospital. He lived for 15 mostly sober years past his initial addiction issues, but all of my immediate family's lives were never the same again. Sobriety is just the start of a long road back. Sometimes (hell, perhaps even often times), the physical ramifications of serious self-abuse can rear their ugly head long after the fact. At the time of my father's transplant he was well into his second year as the coordinator for a homeless meal program downtown and actually looking forward to the future. Ironic, cruel, or karmic payback? Fifteen years later, I still can't make up my mind on that score.

March 26, 2018 @ 3:07 PM

@Dale. Actually it was the health concerns of my former partner that started the whole reset. Literally 2 years to the day I admitted myself was the day ominous test results arrived for her. Then cancer hit my family, then it hit her family and killed her father in weeks. She melted down & was not able to function as a person. I sent her home for mental health reasons which included carrying her over my shoulder to the car. I would never see her again. She's trying but coming back "home" was pointless. I learned to accept it. Then 2 major car accidents would follow, the most recent on the 21st of December. I got lucky on that one. I swerved, ended up going down the highway backward at 70 kmph and literally jumped my car into the ditch. The car was destroyed. Somehow, strangely, I was able to walk away. By then I was like "can this get any worse" and then Feb 22 I walked into the ER because the pneumonia wasn't getting better. 12 hours later I was "dead". Oh and toss in me renting a house to arrive to find the place was set on fire the night before.

It's easy to look at it as bad luck, but I figure I'm still here so I guess I am fortunate. I would REALLY like to have a normal life where I use my vacation days at work for a vacation instead of "being on life support" "being evacuated in the flood", "being trapped in an avalanche for 4 days" and taking a week off because two dudes were stunt racing on Main Street in Vancouver, they hit each other and the one went airborne RIGHT on top of my fucking car". Nothing like a week of vacation sorting that out 900 km's from home.

You should write a book on your escapades in the last while.
Good Luck

March 26, 2018 @ 4:20 PM

Truth is sometimes, after the fact, I either laugh or shake my head and think "which Deity did I piss off". I guess given all that's happened and I'm still kicking I'm #winning.

I admit, at times I get this bad feeling when shit starts going wrong. It's always funny afterward but it's never funny when it happens.

Has our in-house apparent Pro-Line expert been consulted on the Vegas odds yet for the the just
announced appearance of Ann Rohmer on Toronto Mike'd? I don't usually gamble, but I might be
willing to make an exception in this case!! P.S., any hints regarding the Very Special episode coming

It's a "tentative week of" confirmation, which isn't as locked in as a "this day and time" confirmation.

But we're close!

The Very Special episode will be recorded Friday and will be something different.... something more serious. No famous guest, either.

March 26, 2018 @ 6:29 PM

Sounds very mysterious!! Will it be released on that day or at a later date? Asking because another dreaded three out of four day library closure will soon be at hand!! As for Mr. Rohmer, we've all been down this route before, so excuse me and thousands of other people if we are still a little bit skeptical about this booking. Still, the main thing is that it sounds like she is well on the road to recovery!!

March 26, 2018 @ 6:37 PM

With apologies to Ms. Rohmer for accidentally branding 'Her' a 'He' in my previous comment!!

March 26, 2018 @ 6:50 PM

A special episode with Cheryl or Irv?
Either would be a great podcast.

March 26, 2018 @ 6:55 PM

My money is definitely on Irv!! Probably best not to even quietly suggest the former even in
jest,or so urban legend, or at least Toronto Mike folklore would have it, according to threads
of olde!!

Sam from England

Just weighing in on the BNL conversation - I've always hoped for some sort of tell-all book. I kind of feel like we never got the full story. Okay, I know it's not really any of our business, but I'm just nosy.

I do feel like there are too many artistic differences, and with more songs being written by Jim and Kevin, you can understand why Steve would feel like the band was not the same as the band he started with Ed. It's quite understandable that he is probably happier to be solo, and be able to do whatever he wants now.

I think the most shocking thing for us, the fans, was that the split was so hostile, when we had the image of them getting on so well. It was like watching your parents split up. That's why the Junos thing was so brilliant. I guess the best we can hope for is their relationship to improve to a point where they can collaborate on a few songs or performances.

March 27, 2018 @ 6:09 AM

Well, hockey was great last night. My Habs and Coyotes won. That's great. My Suns lost though. My Indians got clobbered, but my Diamondbacks clobbered them. Good thing it didn't count. My Orioles didn't play yesterday. Now hopefully my Cavs will win tonight. They really need to keep on winning.

March 27, 2018 @ 6:59 AM

Sam from England - everything you said!!!!!!!!!!! it did feel like a big break up, apparently the last two albums Steve was on, he said he didn't even want to do them, was just there for the ride. I didn't realize how bad it was until they did their pre Junos interviews separately??? Wiki says Kevin and Steve are still friend, but it's probably Ed and Steve who need the couples counseling the most (and then family therapy for the entire gang) - it really was a love that's just died

Have revived the internet radio station and am featuring some old radio ads and other interesting content from the old air checks from the old CHUM FM, CFNY etc. Along with a mix of free form rock.

March 27, 2018 @ 8:48 AM

Let's all just console ourselves with regards to the ongoing BNL situation by singing an a cappella
round of EWF's "After The Love Is Gone", albeit in a much folkier and less soulful version than the
immortal original version!!

After hearing today's rousing TMI bumper music, I strangely and strongly feel compelled to take off my shirt and fashion a meagaphone of sorts a la MacGyver, and start to contort like Mr. Weiland did in those early STP videos!! (Too soon?!?) Although in my case it would be a lot more akin to the infamous Chunk Truffle Shuffle from Goonies!!! Then again, i don't think that the other patrons of the Parkdale library would very much appreciate my non-dad, dad bod upper half nudity!!

Yesterday you mentioned concerts where you prefer the opening band to the headliner.

Twice I saw STP open for a band that I liked less than I liked STP. I really liked STP.

The first time they opened for the Red Hot Chili Pepper. Don't get me wrong, I dig me some RHCP, especially the Mother's Milk stuff, but I prefer STP.

Then it was Linkin Park. Again, I like Linkin Park, but I prefer STP.

Caught Scott singing for Velvet Revolver, too... he was a fantastic front man for a great band.

March 27, 2018 @ 9:22 AM

I watched the Juno's for maybe the second time, and was happy to see the tribute to Gord and the BNL all together. I had seen them a couple times (Once was a SAR's show and another was something similar) they were fun, but would never just want to see just them. Stephen can sing though, he was at a white ribbon campaign show years back with Jeff Martin, Todd Kerns and bunch of other Canadian musicians, he voice was spectacular! I went to a few WRC and they were all really good shows.

March 27, 2018 @ 9:26 AM

Hell, I even liked that Talk Show album without Scott W.! Totally agree about RHCP, especially
during the Mother's Milk era ,but they lost me shortly after Blood Sugar... as they started to
really limp out after that!! P.S., have you heard any of the new STP yet with their new, former
musical reality TV show singer yet? It's not too bad, and at least they won't be cancelling any
tour dates for the foreseeable future!!

March 27, 2018 @ 9:29 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - LOL. I am down for that!

March 27, 2018 @ 9:31 AM

I though that you might like that particular suggestion!! My inner Maurice White is a little rusty
at this point, but at least I didn't suggest Reasons, as there is no way in hell I could/would ever
attempt Sir Philip's insane falsetto end runs on that track!!

March 27, 2018 @ 9:38 AM

Glad to see you still kicking Irv. When I tell the story to my kids it will be my positive thoughts sent that helped you get better ;)

I will admit I creeped you on Facebook to keep in touch with what was happening. Amazing how invested one can be in someone you've never met. Happy to see you're a fighter.

Do us a favour though and don't lose all of your bite. You need to keep some of these people in line here :)

March 27, 2018 @ 10:15 AM

It's OK to creep. I made the whole "I might not be around much longer" post public for a reason for those who know me but don't have Facebook. As for having a sharp edge & being opinionated, I don't think that will ever go away. What I will shy away from is the whole open trolling especially with politics. I'm SO sick of political fighting online. I posted this yesterday but you can't go to a fucking recipe post on FB without someone commenting how it's the Liberals fault. Just STFU and go away.

@basement. "After the Love is Gone" is an AWESOME song. I know you're a radio fan, but I first learned of the song on WKRP. Venus Flytrap is playing it in a segment on the show. Another song I like is September, which was remixed by Phats and Small circa the late 90's. I remember it at the clubs. I love the original and I love when house music producers remix old disco/R&B stuff and modernize it. Sash did it with Ma Baker too.

RE: BNL. I suspect if you felt the breakup was hostile it was because the music itself & the image of the band was "fun and positive". I mean, most of the music by BNL was pretty fun and light hearted overall. It was straight up good pop music.

March 27, 2018 @ 10:48 AM

There is a great mashup of EWF's "September" and Ozzy's "Crazy Train" by Dj Cummerbund and
these two disparate songs work very well together!! There is also a clever mashup between EWF
("Boogie Wonderland") and Alice Cooper' ("School's Out") by MadMixMustang. Entirely possible
that you are already familiar with these gems. A recent discovery that was handed down to me by
a fellow music lover was a mashup between Ratt "Round and Round" and Marvin Gaye's ..."Grapevine", is just too sublime for mere words!!!

Irv I didn't even know I felt anything until watching their Junos performance!! LOL.
But also, they did 0 interviews together, and said they hadn't spoken with him in almost 10 years.
That's the goal I am trying to get to with my ex so I mean, hostile indeed haha

March 27, 2018 @ 12:29 PM

busted your chops

I like the new Irv better, much better.

March 27, 2018 @ 12:44 PM

@busted your chops.

The reality is a good portion of the classic "me" was actually just a persona I lit up especially around media types. I occasionally post on Puget Sound with some classic brittle me. Admittedly over the years I've really quelled the troll in me. There was a time when I'd show up at a KKK forum with a black guy avatar asking the rednecks to win me a stuffed bunny at the county fair (and watch the ensuing hell begin).

The reality of me in real life *is* actually different. It's just something I don't share publicly for numerous reasons. The moderator has seen a glimpse of that and did question why the two different personalities. But I've been pretty hard on Mike over the years at this forum too.

@JJ. Given the band "hated" each other for 10 years, I can assume whatever happened was pretty nasty and emotional. It just seems people are just outright angry as hell. A few years back I just stopped taking part in most internet forums and reading comments in newspapers because people were just filled with anger. I admit, I was tempted to go troll the shit and bring it down, but as time passes it just seems like a waste of time. Why waste your life being angry. Squishing trolls is like killing a grasshopper with your shoe in a locust invasion. It's pointless. But again, I suspect that was the effects of addiction on Page. Time usually heals most wounds (but not always)

@Basement. Huge EDM guy here but never a mash up fan per se. I do admire the ingenuity of the DJ to do it & their grasp of the how the songs can be mashed but I was never into it. I do like disco though. Shit, I even own a few Bee Gees records.

March 27, 2018 @ 2:34 PM

Nothing wrong with the Bee Gees, in either their original late '60s /early '70s
incarnation or their subsequent Saturday Night Fever and beyond infamy
period. Great songwriters and singers, even Maurice!!

March 27, 2018 @ 2:44 PM

The Bee Gee's are so much more than disco. You could hear a little of their influence in the early stuff from Oasis. I think what's interesting about the whole disco era is that it really marked the beginning of the decline of rock music. When Disco appeared "Disco sucked" and it was mocked and treated as non music. And while it faded away, the whole "beat music" did not as it started reappearing in the mid 80's and was in full swing in Top 40 in the late 80s (hip hop). At the same time club music appeared in the UK and to a lesser extent in Canada (mostly thanks to CFNY).

Bee Gee's from like 50 years ago.

March 27, 2018 @ 3:08 PM

I was also a big fan of a lot of the Rock/Disco crossovers of the late '70s even though such
songs often left fans of either genre unsatisfied (Donna Summer, Kiss, Kinks, ELO, Rod
Stewart, Wings, Queen, Stones, even the Grateful Dead on "Shakedown Street.' Didn't much
care for P-Floyd's"Another Brick In the Wall", though. Even music 15 to 20 years later from
Apollo 440, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, and Lo Fidelity Allstars
carried on somewhat in that vein.

March 27, 2018 @ 3:18 PM

Irv - it's definitely very intense. i have found myself getting so angry over social media, just because i see too many opinions that are sooo hateful and i have to say something but it gets me worked up. i am trying not to let every thing get to me but it is so hard.

i wish the BNL well, and hope they find peace and clarity

Rick C in Oakville

I generally don't watch the Juno's but was drawn in for the BNL's reunion/induction. Glad the boys could bury their differences for one night, not like Simon and Garfunkel, showing utter disdain for each other in one reunion I watched.

March 27, 2018 @ 9:47 PM

Sam from England

For me, the All in good time album (the first album after Steve left) seemed to show a lot of hostility, in that you could interpret a lot of the songs as being negative about Steve. People think the BNL are quirky etc. but they've always had a dark side to their music, and that was part of their brilliance.

March 28, 2018 @ 5:54 AM

My Cavs lost last night and they got fricken blown out. That's not good. My Indians and Diamondbacks tied. Oh well, next is regular season. My Orioles didn't play last night. Anyway, my Cavs better win tonight. Kevin Love is injured again though. That's not good.

March 28, 2018 @ 7:14 AM

Sam from England - I enjoyed the singles they released, and other random stuff so I can't say I am a die hard fan as others are here. I would love for them to reunite - but it really is like trying to get my parents in the same room after x years married, now x years divorced. cannot make one of them see sense, as they're super bitter. not saying BNL needs to reunite - but definitely a lot of bitterness and I don't blame em. My parents were married longer than BNL :/

I was listening to Call and Answer this week and you're spot on about the darkness - the song in itself is a heartbreak but also reunite us if possible song. I sang a couple minutes of it on my instagram, I was so inspired and my one friend sent me messages asking if I was ok (I am super broody) :/ but the song itself is beautifully done! I was fine haha.

March 28, 2018 @ 9:22 AM

Yet another great music pick for the TMI bumper!! I personally think that picking the
music for these spots is the most fun and important part. Does it pay very well? (Just kidding!!)

P.S., I know that you are keeping the names of those major Corus veterans close to your vest
for now, but wouldn't be surprised at all if at least one of them has been a past Toronto Mike
guest. If it's the person I'm thinking, then their reticence towards being fully open during their
appearance was a real waste of one-sided company loyalty!! But what the hell do I know, I've
been collecting a "silly" pension for almost my entire adult life!!!

Just imagine how much more interesting that person's next appearance on Toronto Mike'd will be!

March 28, 2018 @ 9:37 AM

But won't there be a long non-disclosure clause? It's been over a year since Ingrid Schumacher
was unjustly fired from Chump FM and still no return visit (although that might totally be her
decision at this point). Toronto Mike'd definitely needs its own Storm Daniels type (without the
porn sleaze and the alleged bumpin' uglies with Doanld Drumpf!!!, who will say Damn the
Torpedoes and to hell with any clam-up orders!!). To date, I guess that Anne Mroczkowski
comes closest to this (not that she broke any agreements, but for her refreshing total honesty
and frankness).

It's a bit different, because Ingrid and I never discussed a return. It was always presented as a one-off appearance.

This other gent was always going to come back to kick out the jams.

March 28, 2018 @ 9:49 AM

Ah, I always just assumed ( and I know what they say about assumptions!!) that there were
other reasons she never returned. Perhaps one day another spurned veteran of the industry
will break ranks and go for the proverbial throat Toronto Mike'd style. I will probably wait for
this with bated breath, but it's not like I have anything better to do until then!!

My Cavs won last night. That's great. They're playing the way they can and they won, but they need to keep on winning. My Nets also won. That's great. My Suns lost again though. My Coyotes won again. Baseball regular season starts today. My Orioles play this afternoon. My Indians and Diamondbacks play their games late. Everyone is going to win.

March 29, 2018 @ 8:38 AM

That BNL pre-Junos interview clip regarding the gifted program had an entirely different effect
(more of the triggering kind!!) on my psyche!! I tested off the charts as a young lad but "other
issues" prevented me from taking advantage of my supposed intellectual strengths! And that's
a little bit of the story of how I became the bsmntdwllr we all don't know and most certainly
loathe today!!! P.S., Mr. Power made a minor gaffe when he stated that "Gordon" came out in
1994, as it was 1992. Surely, there must be a way for me to capitalize on my arcane knowledge of
musical minutiae, no?!?

March 29, 2018 @ 9:39 AM
