Leafs Acquire Tomas Plekanec from Canadiens

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired centre Tomas Plekanec and AHL forward Kyle Baun from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defender Rinat Valiev, winger Kerby Rychel, and a 2018 second-round pick.

My oldest son tells me this is a good deal for the Leafs. Plekanec will be our fourth line centre and should be an upgrade on Dominic Moore. He's a veteran presence on a very young team and didn't cost us a heck of a lot.

So long Dom Moore, don't let the door hit ya on the way to the Marlies.
-- A bad signing that was nothing but wishful thinking.

I would have rather seen a d-man added, but if a reasonable deal for a D wasn't there, then this one hopefully works. Although I hate seeing that 2nd rounder go.

Plekanic has some speed as well, so he could be moved up in the lineup.
18 games shy of 1,000 with one club. No doubt he'll be back with the Habs next season.
Hope Leafs finish higher in standings than San Jose, and progresses further in playoffs - as it stands, that's the club's only 2nd round pick they have left.

Bruins got Rick Nash.
Should be a great first round series for the Leafs!

I don't mind it as a rental. they had two 2nd round picks this year and the players were organizational filler.

Hope something bigger is brewing if the team seriously plans on an extended playoff run, preferably for a top D-man. They still allow way too many shots to be taken seriously as a legit Stanley Cup contender.

All I want to know....

Is how Cheryl feels about this ?

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

And does Cheryl know it's now better for her team to lose and see if they can draft Rasmus Dahlin?

Or is she still cheering for wins?

Even if the Habs get 1st lottery pick, clueless Bergevin will possibly pick another player.
How does he keep his job?

He's a French Canadian francophone, that's usually how every incompetent Canadiens executive or head coach overstays their welcome.

If the NHL was a bigger deal around North America, I'm sure more would be written about how weird the Canadiens' hiring practices are.

Can you imagine the blowback a team in another sport would get if they insisted all their head coaches and executives belonged to a certain ethnic group?

Leafs better move their remaining 2nd round pick or 1st round pick for an upgrade. I would be pretty disappointed if they didn't, those picks matter less and less to a team like the Leafs as they already have their young core.

@ Urooj - not to nitpick, but they don't require a certain ethnic group, they simply require that you be fluent in french as a that is the language a huge portion of their fan base and media speak. My cousin is 100% fluent in both english and french, but Ontario born and raised. If he had the resume and experience, he could apply for the job.

But far be it from me to defend the Canadiens franchise....by all means rip away lol
