Hi Cheryl!

December 8, 2017 @ 8:11 AM

Mike, you can un-hide the open Mike section now. I posted.

Thanks for the heads up! ;)

December 8, 2017 @ 8:13 AM

I'm not first. Oh well, doesn't matter. At least I don't have a physical today. That was last week. My Coyotes got clobbered. That was no good. 6 to 1. My Habs almost won, but the Flames tied it and won in overtime. This is no good. My Suns also lost. I wish they would win more. My Nets won though. I got one win. My Cavs will win tonight. Remember that Tuesday is my birthday so I need lots of birthday messages to wish me a happy birthday. I love birthdays so you better give me lots of birthday wishes. Monday will be my birthday eve. The day before your birthday is your birthday eve.

December 8, 2017 @ 8:18 AM

TGIF! I had to go back to my office today to do work I should've done yesterday (I don't usually go in Fridays) so that was a silly mistake on my end.

I hope everyone has a good weekend - I have family stuff all weekend long, and a Secret Santa exchange tonight - plus going to see my great aunt to run some errands. I'm too busy to watch tonight and Sunday's Raps games :(

December 8, 2017 @ 8:33 AM

Dr. Seymour Light

I do not know anything about soccer, the rules, the role of the players etc. But, I am looking forward to watching the TFC game on Saturday night. First, you cannot go wrong watching any Championship game and secondly, will be watching with my 7 year old granddaughter who is huge fan of TFC and will be decked out in her soccer gear I am sure. I have been studying the TFC roster so I at least know the names!
Good luck TFC!

December 8, 2017 @ 8:58 AM

Loved the Steve Simmons podcast - Before the podcast I saw him as the guy that worked at the Sun, wrote the piece about Kessel, and was centered out in a negative (unfair) way by Brian Burke in his going away press conference. After listening, I see a guy that is nice, seems genuine, and pretty decent family person.. he takes way too much heat as a result of what he does. Really enjoyed it..
Happy Birthday Cheryl !!

I'm glad to hear this. I try and uncover the real person without the mask. Sometimes I can do it during their first visit, sometimes (as with Cox) it happens during their second visit.

In the room, I can feel the guest letting their guard down. It's why I don't start off with deep dive stuff but always something a little lighter.

I have a few more years then to convince Bob he'd enjoy my basement!

Next up is Andy Frost. If you haven't done so already, let me know your questions for Andy!

December 8, 2017 @ 9:37 AM

Not much of an off-season for TFC -- about a 2 and a half month gap after MLS Cup game to the next home game at BMO Field, a Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 game in late February (or March 1 at latest).

It's odd that things somehow worked out to have two teams who respectively play into late November (Argos) and early December and late February (TFC) now play their home games exclusively outdoors, while the summer sport of baseball has the dome.

December 8, 2017 @ 9:54 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

True that, although I get the sense football and soccer play in just about any conditions other than lightning while baseball will shut it down if the rain is too heavy or persists too long.

Shameless plug in 3..2..1..

Dig CFNY Spirit of Radio era classic alternative? Still have some life in that ageing body while being able to escape reality this Saturday night to Queen west?

If you answered no to any of these questions stop reading here. Otherwise, consider heading to a dingey little club called Nocturne as I'm spinning this stuff in the retro room (and taking requests), with DJ Lazarus playing modern industrial and electronic in the main room.

That is all.

I am surprised their isn't more talk about AM640 switching to Globalnews 640

I was excited about the change as 640 has always been kind of horrible, unfortunately the more things change, the more things stay the same. As their only change is removing Coast to Coast repeat broadcast with Sun TV retreads Alex Pierson and Charles Adler.

Personally I think anybody who was on Sun TV should be blacklisted from media, as they lost any credibility working their. Am I wrong but wasn't Pierson *just* working for the Ontario PC/ Patrick Brown right before she got this gig?

December 8, 2017 @ 10:40 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I challenged the personalities at 640 to call it GNR, and Stafford did it. Here's the audio:

Adding Alex to go up against Barb on 1010 is a smart move. Now that I've had Alex on my show I feel I get her and respect the fact she said no to the invitation to join the Rebel. And yes, Alex said on my show she was working for the PC party.

December 8, 2017 @ 10:53 AM

Seriously, another 5 years McCowan?? WTF. Can we not get a non pensioner in the seat? This was the perfect time for Roger to make a change and they go and do this.

December 8, 2017 @ 11:02 AM

I don't know how much more it would have cost, but instead of putting the opaque canopies over the stands during the recent rebuild of BMO Field, a clear canopy or roof over the whole thing might have been a better idea, like this stadium in New Zealand.

December 8, 2017 @ 11:37 AM

James Edgar

happy Birthday eve Cheryl and happy Friday to the rest of you.

I have to work Sunday , potentially from 0700 to 1900. they are upgrading our Toronto hydro connection and somebody needs to be here just in case the Generator and UPS go offline and we need to do an emergency Datacentre shutdown. I drew the short straw :(

Overtime at least which will come in handy at bill time . But really 14 hours? Most of my time will be spent sorting the loose network cables that have been removed from my racks over the last year that i have been procrastinating for what seems forever.

On the other hand I have a decent well paying job which not everyone can say. So i'm not really complaining.

December 8, 2017 @ 12:54 PM

Well if Mike says it's OK to plug, then let me indulge you in a plug for my 12 year old daughter's ballet school's performances of The Nutcracker...December 15-17 at Lismer Hall inside Humberside Collegiate.
The Pia Bouman School of Ballet's "Nutcracker" is actually Toronto's longest-running Nutcracker (32 consecutive years) and it is a great production with over 100 children dancers aged 5-16. Proceeds go to the school's bursary program for children who couldn't otherwise afford to dance.
And it's a great family alternative to the "other" Nutcracker: tickets start at only $20. You can get tickets at

I've been away for a while. A different job kept me on the road and did not leave a lot of time for commenting.

I've been reading the posts for the past week or so, and it's good to see a lot of the old names still on here.

@cheryl - happy birthday my dear, while I don't share your love of the Habs, I do love your passion.

@ Brian - while I share your sentiment about pushing the Boomers out so that the next generation can put their stamp on things, in this particular instance, I'm glad to have The Bobcat around for another 5 years.

Happy to see things in Toronto Mike Land are still going strong.

Go Leafs Go!

James Edgar,

I'm glad you get overtime. I sure don't. That said, I could push for lieu time if I had to, and I believe my company didn't dock me vacation or anything for the two work days I spent in hospital after my dooring.

My last company gave me jack shit. The absolute minimum of two weeks vacation, and any sick time was docked from that. And they wonder why they can't retain employees...

I'll catch some of the TFC game on Saturday. I used to love soccer as a kid but that was loooooong ago. And I do agree that you cannot go wrong with a championship game.

I had the office to myself today so I knocked off 3 episodes of TO Mike'd. Shoalts, Simmons, and Romanuk. All excellent and fun listens.

Happy Birthday, Cheryl.

We are Christmas-izing this weekend. Not my cuppa but I just do it and stay on my lovely's good side. Bonus is thyat the Xmas shopping is done, except for one item!

I remember when you did Lou Schizas you mentioned a Toronto Mike night at Great Lakes Brewery.

Has this happened? If not, do you have dates?

I think it would be a cool event to mix and mingle and as the feature, do a live-to-tape podcast where you are the guest and "fans" can pepper you with questions about your life, your blog and your pod.

December 8, 2017 @ 6:10 PM

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. That's great. My birthday eve is Monday and my birthday is Tuesday. I get carried away with birthdays that I like to talk about them early. There's supposed to be snow on my birthday eve and then during my birthday as well, so I really don't want a snow storm on my birthday. Mayb e my trainer wouldn't be able to make it for my birthday. He said we would do something special, but I don't know what, but if we get that storm, he won't be able to come. My Cavs lost last night. They go and lose in the second half. They were winning in the first half. Well, they better win tonight. Well, my Nets and Suns play tonight as well as my Habs and Coyotes. I need wins. Will my Browns win tomorrow or not. Why don't they ever win?

December 9, 2017 @ 8:00 AM

Question/comment for Andy Frost;

I'm surprised he doesnt have a mid day or drive show. It seems weird that a long term guy like Andy is still working weekends or is it a love of psycidelic sundays that keeps him on weekends?

Would he consider being PA guy for any of the other Toronto franchises if the opportunity came along?

Questions for Andy Frost

What was it like doing the overnight show when Q107 was the flagship of the Rock Radio Network? Did he get to talk to all kinds of different people from different places?

I'm assuming Andy is more into the psychedelic stuff, but what else is he into? Is he into anything new? Any hard rock/metal? My favorit Q107 era was when it was the pure rock/hard rock format that's why I'm asking.

Any band/artist he has had to play that he absolutely hated?

Any funny on-air stories? Good or bad.

I'm sure he's had plenty of good stories being the PA announcer at Leaf games, but is there anything in particular that sticks out? Good or bad?

December 9, 2017 @ 3:10 PM

Urooj Islam

You have to ask Andy Frost about what it's like to be the Christopher Walken of Toronto where he eventually became that token impression that everyone has at a certain point for whatever reason.

I know he knows that EVERYONE does an impression of him and I want to know what he thinks about it.

How demoralizing is the Yankees acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton as a Blue Jays fan? He just fell into their lap!

The Jays might as well start the rebuild this week at the Winter Meetings, they're not going anywhere in 2018.

Sorry, I missed your comment and am just reading it now.

I did talk to GLB about doing that, and they were into it, but I didn't pull the trigger for fear nobody would show up.

But next summer for sure... and I'll make sure @Rick C in Oakville is available so at least one person will be there.

December 10, 2017 @ 12:07 AM

Please don't let there be a snowstorm on my birthday. That would be bad. Then my trainer couldn't come as he commutes all the way from Hamilton. Well, my Cavs won last night. That's the only win I got. My Cavs bounced back and won last night. My Habs and Coyotes both lost. My Suns and my Nets both lost. Ready for some football? Go Browns, Cardinals, and Ravens. Please win. Also my Coyotes play tonight so they better win.

December 10, 2017 @ 8:07 AM

Well it's Sunday morning and i'm sitting in the dark at my desk. I forgot that once we were on generator we'd only have emergency lighting outside the datacentre. So i'm going to have to spend more time in there than i wanted. With the AC and all the systems running it's annoyingly loud after a while

Still better than sitting in the dark i guess

@TOMike about giving Pierson credit for not joining Rebel, that is a pretty darn low bar to give somebody credit for. But it's the Christmas season so I won't get on it too much lol.

IS any Canadian channel showing Charlie Brown Christmas, my favorite of the bunch. ABC showed it on November 30, but I don't see anything for December anywhere. I know, I know, I should just get the DVD, where you can see it without commercials and without the removing of 5 minutes that Canadian channels always do so they can fit it in a half hour block

For the first time I watched Muppets Christmas Carol, it's actually pretty good adaptation of the Dickens story. Michael Caine was a great Scrooge

December 10, 2017 @ 11:28 AM

Rick C in Oakville

For anyone who missed Neil Youngs hometown concert, there is a repeat tonight at 9 pm.

December 10, 2017 @ 5:02 PM

When I search Zap2it TV listings, it looks like it's The Family Channel and 'Family Chrgd' showing it in Canada (no idea if or how much they cut out to fit it into 30 min), and ABC network in the U.S. showing it on Thursday Dec. 21.
As a kid, I always liked the Halloween one better.

One Christmas special that only got shown once or twice in the 1990s was the Beavis and Butt-head one that had a parody of 'It's a Wonderful Life' (It's a Miserable Life) that began with the people of town praying to God to kill Beavis and Butt-head ("Please kill them... They could die in an accident.") A guardian angel is sent to encourage Butt-head to kill himself by showing him how much better everyone else's life would be without him, but Butt-Head is too dense to understand the message.

December 10, 2017 @ 5:41 PM

Well, today is my birthday eve, and we're going to get a snow storm. That's my birthday present. I don't want it. 5 to 10 cm tonight. A couple more cm tomorrow. I'll be surprised if my trainer can come. I think he should take the go train, but he probably won't. Anyway, he promised something special on my birthday, but I may not get it. Stupid weather. Well, my Browns had a big lead, but they blew it. They can't close out games. My Cardinals did win though. My Ravens also had a lead, but blew it at the end. This sucks. My Coyotes lost. Anyway, sports sucked yesterday.

This Keaton Jones story is the most "social media" story ever. This is why fame, any fame, even 15 minutes of it just isn't worth it because every aspect of your life and the lives of your loved ones will get out there.

December 11, 2017 @ 4:21 PM

Thanks for the Charlie Brown Info @H.o.E. I will circle my calendar

@Urooj, that Keaton story is something else. Can somebody explain what on earth is the deal with the GoFundMe page? and how come this bully kid was considered the "lottery winner" of everybody sympathy.

Taking away all the possible racism twist, I was always a little uneasy picking winner and losers for online charity out of a single video.

Yesterday was my first shovel of the season, and today was my biggest shovel. Of course, we're only talking 5cm, but it's enough to make everything so damn pretty.

This is the type of day I usually skip my bike ride because the ploughs need to get out there and salt or I have no traction.

p.s. Serious FROST warning in effect. Stay tuned....

I'm more than a little concerned about what happens in the Alabama election today. I would never have thought I'd have to worry about anyone electing a child molester, but there seem to be a scary amount of Americans that will look past every personality flaw in existence as long as the person in question will help "Make America Great Again".

At this rate, the US will be a 3rd world Banana Republic by 2020

Apparently the suspension for Stephen LeDrew has turned into a "firing".

I really wonder if it was just an excuse Bell is using to get rid of his salary from the books as opposed to his appearing on Fox news.

December 12, 2017 @ 1:12 PM

I agree with you Patrick. Judging by the social-media response, there didn't seem to be that many people upset with his comments. I don't see him being on Fox News as so huge that you could be fired but that's just me. I didn't agree with Stephen LeDrew on very much but I enjoyed his commentary.

My favourite Bob Seger song is this one:

December 12, 2017 @ 4:28 PM

Well, my trainer did make it. That was great that he did. He won't come on Thursday though because of an appointment. Well, my birthday was good. I wanted to go skating, but my trainer said the rinks are really snow covered. I like skating, but hate snow. I don't care about it being pretty, but I hate it. Well, Night Moves is a good song, but his slow stuff is fantastic. You have to listen to Jody Girl. That's my favourite. It's not a big hit, but it's so fantastic or No Man's Land. My Cavs won last night. That's great. My Nets also won, but my suns lost. I love birthdays, but I hate Christmas. Bah Humbug.

December 13, 2017 @ 7:25 AM

When it comes to Seger, much more fond of songs like Turn the Page (Live Bullet version), Hollywood Nights, and Feel Like a Number.

December 13, 2017 @ 11:49 AM

The Voice of Reason

Good choice both times.

December 13, 2017 @ 11:58 AM

Am I allowed to annoy Cheryl by saying I would always change the station when I heard the start of a Bob Seger song?
However, another band I did like, did a version of one of his songs about the music director of a Windsor station.

December 13, 2017 @ 12:20 PM

Good call with Thin Lizzy's Seger cover version link!!

Great to see Dire Straits will get their spot in the R&R Hall of Fame, along with The Cars. Bittersweet that Benjamin Orr isn't around to see the honour.

It seems like a solid group of inductees. I have heard some complaining that Radiohead wasn't named, but they don't hold a candle to any of this year's inducted groups in terms of either influence or commercial recognition.

December 13, 2017 @ 4:42 PM

MLSE now owns the Argos. That's good the Argos in that Sportsnet and the Fan 590 will likely give the team more coverage.

It also has me wondering if MLSE will buy the Jays from Rogers so they own all the major teams in this city. It makes sense for Rogers to go from 100% ownership to 37.5% ownership.

December 13, 2017 @ 6:08 PM

My Suns lost last night, but it was close. I don't know why they had to lose, but they did. Anyway, hopefully my Habs and Coyotes win tonight and my Cavs and Nets win tonight as well. Jody Girl is a great song. I love all Bob Seger's songs, but the soft slower ones are my favourites. Bob Seger is a great singer.

December 14, 2017 @ 7:31 AM

Regarding Radiohead not being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, this was only
their first year of eligibility, so hopefully any disappointed fans will take this into consideration and
hope for a better result in the years to come. It will soon be 2018 and the Moody Blues are only now
becoming enshrined, at least 25 years past their original eligibility date (25 years after initial EP/Album
release). The Hall has most definitely hit a tipping point where a lot of the music genres that their elitist overlords like Jann Wenner chose to overlook for decades (metal, prog, corporate rock/AOR) are finally getting their time in the spotlight. Me, I'm still waiting for the likes of MC Skat Cat, Right Said
Fred and Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers to take their rightful places among the pantheon of greats!!

December 14, 2017 @ 9:18 AM

I saw the advance screening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi last night and my butt is still a wee bit sore
from the two and a half hour running time!! No spoilers, but it was really nice to get a chance to
"visit" with Luke Skywalker for longer than his blink and you miss it cameo in The Force Awakens!!
Too bad he bore a sharp resemblance to many of the rough and ready characters I come across
daily in some of Toronto's finer downtown public libraries! On the bright side, such local luminaries
as Ed Robertson from BNL and possibly a black-tie clad Mike Holmes were in attendance!! Not to
mention various Bell Media employees, who still have ten days to get pink-slipped before Christmas!!!

December 14, 2017 @ 10:04 AM

Another sad rock and roll passing to report: Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens passed away at the
age of 62 on Tuesday. Apparently he had been dealing with a wide variety of health issues over the
past two years. Very underrated singer/songwriter and an overall great rock craftsman.

December 14, 2017 @ 11:13 AM

If you happened to look up towards the northwest at about 5:25 pm, you might have seen the International Space Station moving slowly across the sky. If it's clear again on Saturday, there's another good opportunity to see it starting at about 5:15 pm to 5:22 moving from northwest to southeast.

December 14, 2017 @ 6:16 PM

Sad about Pat DiNizio. Smithereens are a great band. I think they came to prominence after New Wave had begun to fade and we were into the era of college alternative which may have began with REM's first release. When guitars made a comeback after a synth emphasis. Whatever one wants to to categorize them as here they are with a Beach Boys cover:
