Lance Brown and Joe Tilley Laid Off as Bell Media Job Cuts Continue

Lance Brown and Joe Tilley have delivered sports updates for CFTO News, now CTV Toronto News, since the mid-80s. Lance started in 1985 and Joe in 1984. If my math is right, that's over thirty years for each of them.

Bell Media has cut over 50 jobs across Canada, including Lance Brown and Joe Tilley. Earlier today, Paulie Morris was let go by 97.7 HTZ FM. CTV Toronto News will now save money by utilizing TSN resources for their sports updates when local sports go off the air on December 27.

When did this story come out? When was their last broadcast? I just checked and Lance's twitter is down.

End of an era! Enjoyed their work a lot. But this is hardly a tragedy. 30+ years at a gig like that is pretty spectacular and few from the succeeding generations will experience anything like that. Congrats on a huge run.

November 18, 2017 @ 1:33 AM

Bell Media are pathetic!! It is amazing how they are always crying poverty and proclaiming
the need for company-wide austerity measures, when they have been the country's leading
broadcaster for what seems like an endless eternity. While it is true that very few people will
be fortunate enough to have as lengthy career at the same employer, this sad fact doesn't make
Bell's corporate chicanery any more appetizing. We're less than two months away from Bells'
"Let's Talk Day". Wonder how many people they'll can the day after that!?! Funny how Ben Mulroney
always seems to be immune from any potential job-loss!! Must be nice to be the son of a former

November 18, 2017 @ 9:30 AM

Lance Brown did his normal sportscast on CFTO yesterday & was his self & nothing was said that I heard about this being his last gig.

They don't make the switch until December 27, so you might see him until then.

His own union put out the press release announcing he's been laid off.

@ bsmntdwllr73 YES Bell is pathetic. But compared to that other company " ROBBERS " Bell looks like The Tooth Fairy,The Easter Bunny and Santa all rolled into 1 warm and fuzzy being.

It's been a long, long time with those two faces on what was once CFTO.

I seem to remember Lance Brown stepping away from CTV about a decade ago -- he'd gone out west, as I recall -- but returned about a year later.

I assume both receive lucrative packages, hopefully substantial enough to retire on. I'm not sure of their ages, but I would think both are around the age where early retirement might be an option. So, for their sake I hope the package makes this a nice ending for them, even if it wasn't of their choice.

What it means for local sports coverage is another matter. Sure, they could just have sports recaps from TSN, but CFTO/CTV Toronto did a decent job reporting on high school and other local sports, which I can't imagine TSN recaps will do. The options for local sports coverage on TV are dwindling.

November 18, 2017 @ 10:24 AM

I'm not sure what's worse - sending them packing after 30 years without an on-air goodbye to their viewers or announcing their layoffs and having them stick around for a month doing their sportscasts. After 30+ years I would hope they could say some goodbye to their viewers. They are part of the family in many households. I think this is a really bad move for the newscasts. I don't know a single TSN sportcaster. And during layoffs, I don't think you get packages. Wishing them both well.

November 18, 2017 @ 12:35 PM

Lance Brown gets the boot, but that braying donkey Tom Brown still has a job? Maybe he has to stick around to build one final Toy Mountain!

November 18, 2017 @ 1:19 PM

Tom Brown does weather. It's the sports department that is being eliminated.

November 18, 2017 @ 3:04 PM

Bell cries poor when they own all the radio stations in the GTA/Niagara Pen. Everytime a Leafs game is on TSN 1050 it is also on TSN Hamilton, Niagara, Kitchener.

These guys got a monopoly on media & its time to end it, but its hard to be independent in Canada. There are no fresh voices in media, just recycled gibberish from head office.

At least Tilley brought enthusiasm.

November 18, 2017 @ 3:15 PM

@Joe LaFortune

You might see that until December 27. That's when local sports ends on CTV News.

The press release from the union includes this statement.

The layoffs have struck at least 15 TV and radio stations and include both on air and technical staff. On air personalities include Ottawa CTV 2 hosts Melissa Lamb and Lianne Laing, BNN host Michael Kane, and CFTO Sportscasters Joe Tilley and Lance Brown.
November 18, 2017 @ 8:02 PM

It amazes me the number of people Bell Media has every day at CP 24, yet they fire two of the classiest guys at CTV.

Re: Global TV "old" Weather Personality:

I wonder how a certain Weather personality (35 years ago) from Global TV, Chorus Entertainment can use her position to advertise to benifeit and credit herself. When I spoke with a certain head of the department after the complaint was made I was told that they worked together for 35 years and she is a long time employee. I again asked what this had to do with using her position to advertise and use her position in a direct conflict of interest. This is when I was threatened to not go up against the lawyers at Global TV.

Question: How can a TV personality use their position to advertise for a third party when there is a third party involved? AND when they are the person in question that is using this third party.

Unfair advantage?
Yes it is and there is a minor involved.
This is a direct abuse of their position which has hurt a minor and used the services of Global TV and Chorus Entertainment for her own personal vendetta.
I had no choice in this being aired or any knowledge or consent to any of this information being aired.

November 19, 2017 @ 10:24 PM

This is so sad - and it reminded me of Christine Bentley being forced to retire but they played it off as if it were her choice...

I hope that they actively prepared for retirement, and will be able to keep working in some manner, somewhere. 30 years on the job doesn't mean that they wanted to retire or stop working at all, but their form of broadcast is becoming less and less viable.

Bell and Rogers remain crooks, they can do whatever they want when they have no competition.

November 20, 2017 @ 9:05 PM

What a shame. These guys are the reason we watch 6 o’clock news so that will change. The local news is what makes this unique with coverage of high school football and the annual tradition of building a rink for someone in need. The interactions with the anchors and the other departments like the weather are priceless. Makes you feel like cancelling Bell services and going with anybody else. Thank you Lance and Joe for many great years.

November 20, 2017 @ 9:41 PM

So sad to see Lance go. He is part of the fabric of our lives. Bell can afford half the Leafs, but is crying poor over Lance and others? Would be interesting to see him on Global or CBC, but you have to wonder if part of the condition of receiving his severance package would be a non-compete clause. I'm going to stop watching. Love the rest of the CTV crew, but what Bell did was just plain wrong in my view.

How about getting rid of serial whiner Dana Levenson (weekend weather)? Every time a minus sign appears before a temperature, even if it's just -1, she moans about how bitterly cold and frigid it is. She's obviously has never been outside Toronto in winter. She'd be a laughing stock in any other Canadian city the way she carries on...and on...about the frigid weather. She personifies the whininess of Torontonians that the rest of the country assumes.

I can recall on half of one hand!!

What a shame to lose Lance Brown and Joe Tilley, two classy and dynamic CTV Toronto sportscasters. Their delivery was powerful and done with flair. I used to enjoy the humourous banter that went on between Ken Shaw and Lance Brown during the 6:00 p.m. news hour. Their back and forth kibitzing was most entertaining and enjoyable to watch. It made the news hour more genuine and honest.
I hope that they are picked up by other networks; these two personalities are too knowledgeable, polished and skilled to fade into retirement. Their versatile background experiences and community contributions may serve them well. I was a devoted fan of both of these wonderful reporters. CTV's big loss! Shame on Bell Media.

November 21, 2017 @ 8:00 PM

I liked Joe Tilley, Lance Brown was ok but not the biggest loss, kind of a smart-ass I thought. CFTO's sports was going downhill and I noticed quite a few gaffs over the past couple of years with either showing the wrong reel or none at all, news reels included, something was going on (or not) behind the scenes and it showed, usually on the 11:30 news cast, if I was Joe Tilly I would have thrown in the flag of surrender long ago and sued for lack of support and competency ! At any rate I think it was a death by a thousand tiny cuts, something these management arseholes from Bell Media corporate are trained at.

November 21, 2017 @ 10:19 PM

I agree wholeheartedly about e talk. Ugh I just can't stomach either of those shows and I am their "target market".

November 21, 2017 @ 11:57 PM

I'm not surprised that Lance and Joe were laid off, however I thought they would have kept 1 of them around. I thought 1 of them would report sports in studio at 6 and 11:30 on weekdays and then use TSN on weekends. This sounds horrible but just last week I was thinking "How much longer will Lance be around for?" I guess we know now! As sad as it sounds, eliminating the sports department allows CTV to cross-brand more. Remember how news stations used to have a dedicated business reporter? You don't see that anymore. CTV barely dedicates time to business news and when they do the anchors are reading copy or they're using BNN to give a quick 10 second blurb. They use e-talk on their noon newscasts for entertainment updates. CTV Toronto laid off their dedicated entertainment reporter almost 10 years ago. So as for sports they can have TSN report on national sports while having the CTV news anchor possibly mentioning what's happening in local sports.

CTV Barrie no longer has a weather anchor, the news anchor does weather from the desk. Back in the 90s Jayne Pritchard actually did the weather on the weekends and when she became anchor she did it on the 12:30pm newscasts. They also don't have a dedicated sports anchor either.

How much longer is Ken Shaw going to be around for? His salary must be killing CFTO's payroll. Michelle Dube is on maternity leave and I hate to say this, but with her being away I tender to wonder if they can make do with her all this time do they ever need her at all?! However, she's probably cheaper than Ken. CTV Montreal only has 1 news anchor for its weekday newscasts. Mutsumi Takahashi (who is probably worth a lot too) anchors at 12pm and 6pm for an entire hour solo and Paul Karwatsky anchors solo at 5pm and 11:30pm. It appears that Tarah Schwartz anchors solo on weekends at 6pm and 11:30pm. CTV Montreal only has 3 dedicated anchors on their payroll. I don't see why they can't have Michelle anchor solo at 12pm and 6pm and have Zuraidah report at 6pm and anchor solo at 11:30pm. As for weekends they could eliminate Andria Case and have Colin D'Mello be the solo anchor on weekends while still reporting 3 days a week.

I'm surprised CFTO and CP24 haven't consolidated their news departments yet. It seemed to work well for City when they had CP24. Currently you do see CTV throwing to CP24 reporters and vice versa but it seems to only happen when the other one can't get to the scene fast enough. But everybody who reported for both City & CP24 also anchored. They used the same weather reporters for both stations. Wouldn't that save Bell some money while not decreasing the quality of their newscasts? Eliminate "Knight in the Morning", have Bill Coulter do weather from 5am-noon. Have Anwar do weather on CTV & CP24 at noon and then on CP24 until 5 or 6pm and then have Tom Brown do weather on CP24 from 6pm until his last hit on CTV around 11:45pm.

I met Bob Summers through a friend of a friend a couple years ago and he was quite open and honest. He told me that every time Bell announced layoffs if he wasn't part of that round than he'd definitely be part of the next round . If he had an appointment after CP24 Breakfast, the news anchor would do the traffic until Amber came in. Back in the day when one of them was on holidays, the other would do a split shift and only report during both rush hours with the news anchor doing traffic the rest of the day. I don't think traffic reporters are the highest paid people but Amber and Bob had been doing it for a while. I know both had trained a lot of people throughout the years and always thought their trainee would be their replacement. I had heard through my friend of a friend that Bob thought he'd be one of the first to go when the media started to make cuts back during the big recession around 2008. I don't know what Bob is thinking now but from what I know he saw this day coming for almost 10 years and is probably surprised he lasted this long. I had learned from my friend of a friend that while Bob & Amber were mostly on CP24, their salaries were coming out of the radio stations payroll which could simply be a way an accounting practice. Its sad to say but we've been seeing new faces doing traffic for a while now and I don't think that's an accident.

Every time I hear about layoffs I wonder how much leaner Bell can get. Everything is becoming automated now. By the way, this is off topic but don't the camera tracks on the CTV studio floor look really tacky? Can't they use remote control cameras without such a bulky big track? I'm waiting to hear a CTV anchor say they're in a foot cast because they tripped over one of the tracks.

November 22, 2017 @ 1:12 AM

Totally agree with your comment about Joe Tilley's beyond annoying "SPORTS COMING UP"
catchphrase /tagline. Feel bad when any longstanding media employee loses their job due to
corporate tomfoolery, but his smug, elongated delivery of those 3 words always make something
definitely come up in my throat: BILE!!

November 22, 2017 @ 9:16 AM

It is very disappointing to hear that Bell Media chose to lay off Lance Brown. He was the main reason I would watch CTV. I would recommend laying off a meteorologist and one or two news anchors first. Particularly the ones that have difficulty getting through a story error free.

November 22, 2017 @ 9:34 AM

It feels like both Lance and Joe have been at CFTO/CTV for a life time. This kinda feels like a forced retirement for both even though Bell is calling it "layoffs" and using it as an excuse to push TSN into the fold.

So with Bell doing away with CTV's local Toronto sports crew does that make Danielle Michaud the last one standing for local TV sports casting in the Toronto area? Kinda scary when you think about it if that is so.

November 22, 2017 @ 10:20 AM

Bell Media is just stupid...they keep the hacks at CP24 while Joe and Lance get the boot after 30+ years. The on air talent at CP 24 can't hold a candle to either of these two guys, Lance and Joe have something the talking heads on CP 24 don't have...personality.

Personally I have loved the broadcasts these two guys have done over the years. I couldn't tell you the names of any of the people who do on air for Global, Ch11 or CBC. I can't stand the news on those channels and have always watched CTV news. I think its a big mistake firing Lance and Joe because they have become part of the family each night when we turn on the news. I wish them well in whatever they do next. Thanks for the 30+ years!

Bell Media can bite me! Dumbasses.

November 23, 2017 @ 12:06 AM

Brutal. I enjoyed both these guys and their brief set of highlights was a nice change from the generic highlight packages we find everywhere else these days. This also likely means more face time for Kate Beirness. Gag! Well, I know what channel I'm not turning to to watch highlights at 11:50 anymore.

The day after the cuts were announced and Tilley did the highlight pack, you could hear Zuraidah Alman say to him, in the two seconds between the end of it and cutting to the commercial, "That must have been emotional."

I don't know if it was ever formally announced, but it seems like Rogers phased out Danielle Michaud from the weeknight sports recaps. I don't think I've seen her on in months.

November 23, 2017 @ 9:31 AM

First off, get rid of the morning crew on CP24. Bill Coulter and Pooja Handa are horrendous at the best of times. Dana Levinson from CTV weather. Keep Lance and get rid of Tim Brown.

November 23, 2017 @ 10:11 AM

Pete - Danielle is still doing sports stuff during the 5-7pm newscast so I'm not sure if she's being phased out or just not used on the 11pm show.

With TSN taking over the local sports at CTV Toronto on December 27, Lance's last day will probably be December 22, unless he works Christmas or Boxing Day.

The thing is, 95% of CTV Toronto news viewers won't read this page or learn from Twitter that Bell Media laid off Lance Brown and Joe Tilley. So as far as this 95% core is concerned, Lance decided it was time to retire.

Of course, the truth is that Lance and Joe were told they were being let go. They were always going to be off the air before December 27. This is a fact, but only 5% will ever know.

The firing of Lance & Joe only confirms my thoughts about executives such as those at Bell media. I equate them on the same level as DRUG DEALERS, caring little how they hurt & damage people, only interested in stuffing their pockets with money, money. I remember when Christine Bentley announced she had 'retired' Erin Davis (formerly of CHFI) called this out as it not being Christine's choice to leave CTV and Stephanie Smyth if I recall correctly told Erin that it was indeed Christine's choice to retire. It was Christine's choice to go quietly and not be escorted out by security.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Just to be clear, I heard Christine's story from her. In fact, I recorded our conversation and you can hear it here.

An executive told her that her time was up and she could be walked out or they could like and spin it as a retirement. She chose that option, but she had no intention of retiring. She wanted to work.

November 23, 2017 @ 9:09 PM

gift of time & money

After 30+ years, they should be getting a darn good severance package. Plus Ontario pension laws should ensure that any hit they take on their pensions for retiring early will be minimal. When I was packaged off after almost 30 years, I wasn't complaining; it was quite a nice retiring bonus. Be proud of a job well done but your value, your worth are not solely quantified by your job. We all have a fixed amount of time on this planet, take the gift of time & money and enjoy it. Stepping out of the daily rat race really is quite enjoyable.

November 23, 2017 @ 9:19 PM

@ Toronto Mike

I listened to the podcast featuring Christine & Kate as well. What I'm referring to though was banter on Twitter between Erin Davis and Stephanie Smyth. This is what Erin (@erindavis now but whose former Twitter handle was @CHFIerin) said at the time:

WHAT?? Christine Bentley stepping down from CTV THIS FRIDAY after 35 yrs serving #TO. Bosses: "wish her every good fortune."

WHAT??? (again) Still gobsmacked about Christine Bentley leaving CTV TO news, day after tomorrow. 2 days' notice? That's what she gets?

From network PR: "CTV TO presents special tributes to Bentley for the rest of the week." 2 whole days? Dave Devall got, what, 2 yrs?

Somebody write and tell me this was Christine Bentley's idea. Anybody.

Long after it's too late, Bell Media will realize the consultants it has retained have steered the ship in the wrong direction!

Millenials are not watching conventional TV and news programming is definitely not on their radar.
So turfing all the old guard and replacing them with low paid college newbies is a waste of time and talent.

Having watched Bell dismantle CTV Ottawa in recent years, I predict this is only the beginning for CTV Toronto.

Bell Media does not support local news (TV or radio) except to the extent required by CRTC regulations.

In fact, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Bell execs were pushing the Commission to eliminate local programming entirely.
'Local' costs money. By contrast, American productions are a cheap cash cow for Bell.

So long Lance. Goodbye Joe. Here's your hat! What's your hurry?!

November 25, 2017 @ 9:07 PM

One silver lining in the latest BellMedia cutbacks? No more corny "Sports...comin' up!". Joe's shtick wore thin decades ago. It was annoying when he first said it, and it's been really annoying ever since. I reach for the mute button whenever Tilley appears to plug his portion of the local news.

Well I have been watching this new cast since I was a little girl. Eliminated these two fellows is not only disappointing but simply disrespectful. Just goes to show you jobs in the media are not safe anymore and it is obviously about money money money. I will no longer support this channel anymore, I will no longer watch it as these cuts are upsetting and simply WRONG. They did this with the Breakfast Television team and now they have replaced and re-hired new people for that morning show.
My only confusion is if you lay off a employee you are not as a business to replace them with someone else, so why get ride of Jennifer from BT and replace her with all the new people and a bigger team now. So they hired several staff with a lower pay rate and replaced her, that is simply unjustifiable and WRONG.
Bell Media is the worst company for this and I would expect that when their news anchor returns from maternity leave that she will also be on the chopping block. Such a same.
My daughter quit the college course for journalism due to these situations, very concerning and know we have to figure out what career is the best choice. UGH
Good-bye CTV news I will no longer watch or support your channel.

November 27, 2017 @ 6:51 PM

I don't think anybody is committed to any one station anymore. I know I rotate between the big 3 in Toronto. But boycotting 1, I think it just makes the situation worse because they have less viewers, which means they have to charge less for advertisements, which means less revenue, which means more layoffs.

What a disappointment that Lance Brown and Joe Tilley are leaving - companies are pretty mean to long time employees - Surely there were others they could let go - Yes one person could do the news but I do like both Ken Shaw and Michelle Dube- Yes Tom Brown could go - Guess Bob S
Sommers is gone too????

December 11, 2017 @ 4:51 PM

I feel bad for Lance Brown. But for me I think Andria Case can go. She’s always tongue tied. Lance can takes her place. Merry Christmas Lance and Joe!!

So sad to see these guys go!!! I've been watching them for years.. they always get rid of the good ones...

They definitely need to get rid of Tom Brown... he's like a big kid.. and he screams all the time into the camera!

The heck with Toy Mountain.. enough already!

Bell is pathetic!

December 21, 2017 @ 7:20 PM

Lance Brown & Joe Tilley, we are both saddened & shocked to learn that you will no longer be on air. You will be missed so very much, & you are wished only the very best in the future. Thank you.

December 21, 2017 @ 8:43 PM

Really, really will miss Lance Brown, you are such a genuine, professional guy. Would definitely not miss Dana Levenson, or Colin Demelo. Perhaps it's time to switch channels, would miss Ken Shaw, Pat Foran, & still love Lloyd Robertson. All the best for the future Lance & Joe, & thank you.

December 21, 2017 @ 8:53 PM

Stunning & shameful news, should have kept Lance Brown, he is talented, classy, professional. Get rid of Lisa LaFlamme & Dana Levenson, & Colin DeMelo. Best of luck to you Lance, you will be missed.

Lance Brown – any relation to weather presenter Tom? – was a terrific sportscaster. I’ll certainly miss seeing him on CTV News Toronto. He was professional, classy, and always managed to inject the right amount of humour into his sportscasts. I can’t say the same thing about Joe “CAHHHMIN AHHHPPP!!!” Tilley, though. He was irritating and didn’t seem professional. His schtick wore thin quickly and his delivery was on par with that of a greasy used car salesman.

No one mentioned it yet, but I imagine third-string sportscaster Brian Dunstan is also being let go. I thought he did a great a job, and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of him. He announced his departure and the impending end of regular sportscasts on CTV Toronto on tonight’s 11:30 newscast.

December 22, 2017 @ 12:30 AM

I'm sad about Lance and Joe being fired. I liked them–welcome in my home. I like Ken also but when I switch to another channel I will miss him. I won't miss Tom Brown.

Lance Brown was the main reason for watching CTV. He was knowledgeable and had a great on air presence. Very professional and great sense of humour. We have watched CFTO since it appeared on air. No more. We will watch the news on another channel. Will miss Ken Shaw and Lisa Laflamme. Best wishes to Lance and Joe.

Lance Brown has been a fixture on CTV for so many decades. He brought personality to the newscast. He was never afraid to tell things as it was (especially when it came to the Leafs).

He went out in a blast this week with his yearly christmas-carol sports cast and his 17th annual build-a-rink tradition.

He signed off with dignity. I was amazed there was nothing done by CTV for his sign off. Just awkward silence when nobody knew what to say, and as the footage faded out with Lance waving bye.

I am really disappointed in CTV. All my life and I am over 60, our family ALWAYS watch CTV news at 6 pm, it was a family news told it like it happened, and when my dad and brother got to the sports, w heard family sports, like Richview Collegiates Football Team, (etc). now we will listen to TSN, people that do not care about family sports or Richview Collegiates Football Team, or Michael Powers Lacrosse Team, they do not care, they are only interested in the big sports news. Perhaps this is the way of the world the little good news stories are forgotten and only big sports news that brings in the money is what they show on CTV. I am ashamed after 30 years you can get the boot, that is how much Bell cares about long-time employees who draw the crowd of us "plain" viewers that like to hear about our community sports over sports down in the states that can be told in a one-minute sports reel. Maybe Bell's motto should be changed to "we don't care about your years of loyalty to CTV/Bell, or the viewers support, we just see money signs $$$$"

December 23, 2017 @ 1:34 PM

Joe tilley was the best that evening sports caster i watched faithfully 1992-now.
I was going to say bring back Sunil but it looks like this
bell media B shit. Is taking over.
I will cherish my memories with the guy i watched everynite for my sports local news.
Thank you for your broatcast happy retirement and hope to meet u

Well, watched Lance last night and Joe tonight for the last time. One positive thing for me..... it gives me the final incentive I need for cancelling my basic TV package. CTV news was the only thing I watched. Not any more though. Shame on you, Bell.

Will miss Lance, Joe, and Michael Kane. Wish you all a Happy Holiday and all the very best for your futures! You guys are the best in the biz!

Last Brown did his last telecast on Friday December 22nd. Lead into his segment indicated he was retiring. No mention at least on air that day that he was being let go by Bell. Just saw Joe Tilley. He did a very very nice send off for himself thanking everybody saying he'll miss everybody. Didn't hit at layoffs. Looked it up on Google and I was absolutely stunned at the way this happened. No reason why we can't change the news cast and let CTV News network do the news. That way we can get rid of Ken Shaw who's been there forever!

December 23, 2017 @ 7:08 PM

King Friday

So sad to see Lance and Joe say their goodbyes. I should have guessed that it was a forced retirement much like Christine Bentley and Bill Hutchison. It was surprising when Lance said goodbye yesterday (Dec 22) and then Joe does the same a day later. I never read anything about the Bell layoffs, so this was shocking to me and my family.
Merry Christmas from Bell...yay!!!

December 23, 2017 @ 7:16 PM

As one commentor said the TSN Sports casters are completely unknown. No one knows who they are. Send these two guys over to fill in those spots and let those people go. Theses guys know more and have done more in one day than those guys will have in their lifetime. Let's not lose this experience. Sounds a bit like ageism to me!

December 23, 2017 @ 7:30 PM

I am shocked to see that both of these men have been let go. I will miss Lance*s Christmas jingle. It was always fun.
Best wishes to them both.

December 23, 2017 @ 7:47 PM

I am at a loss as to why Lance would be let go. He gave great credibility to the sports stories he presented and delivered in such a relaxed manner, that the viewer thought of him as a friend. Lance will be greatly missed, I hope that he finds a new niche that he will enjoy and we can either watch or listen.
As for the comments of the other people posting, I agree, Tom Brown has always been awful, over the top and childish. He needs to man up or let go of. Truly horrible to watch.

My wife and I have watched CTV news for as long as we can remember.
When I heard that Lance Brown was retiring I was sad for me and glad for him.
I started to think about who would replace him in doing the sports, and I thought of Joe Tilley, then I hear that he is retiring also, what a coincidence!
On reading further I find that Bell is dumping them and others in a cost saving venture.
That is a terrible way to treat your long time employees.
Although my wife is not to interested in the sports, she deplores the way that Bell treats their employees.
We will be looking for a new channel to watch at 6pm.
I will be interested to see when the ratings come out if you are still the number one news channel.,you will have at least 2 less viewers.

December 23, 2017 @ 11:06 PM

Global here we come. Had already switched to Global for morning news since dislike so much the new CTV format. Lance Brown and Joe Tilley had such class and are very knowledgeable of the local sports scene. What a loss.

December 27, 2017 @ 7:16 PM

So, CTV doesn’t think that Toronto, with it’s multiple professional sport teams and successful individual athletes i.e. tennis, track, etc., need to keep us updated? How incredibly moronic. Oh well, Global and City will be happy to keep us informed!

December 27, 2017 @ 7:40 PM

this is too sad. we always tuned to make sure we listened to Lance and Joe give the sports. What a big mistake Bell is making.

December 28, 2017 @ 10:25 AM

Carrol Godin

Saddened. by the axing of Lance Brown. He said he was retiring so professional of him. He was the reason for watching. Loved his sense of humor. The powers that be are sooo wrong. A neighbour of ours benifitted from him building an ice rink. Why do good people get shafted? You have lost an audience member as We have lost respect for bell media

December 28, 2017 @ 7:22 PM

I was sad to hear Lance Brown and Joe Tilley were let go. There are many of your newscasters that they could have replaced, like Andria Case, Colin Demelo and Tom Brown. Even though Lance & Joe were sportscasters, they could have replaced any one of them. I guess it came down to the matter of money.

January 3, 2018 @ 1:03 AM

The news at 6:00 won't be the same without Lance Brown. How does Bell Media expect to stay in business if they keep getting rid of their best on air personalities? Bring back Lance Brown or I guess we all have to tell Bell Media to take a hike.

January 3, 2018 @ 8:20 AM

They're barely even doing sports during the 6pm and 11:30pm newscasts, too bad!

January 3, 2018 @ 12:09 PM

It's so sad to see Lance Brown and Joe Tilley leaving. They will be missed.

Nowadays, not only Bell Media is the only company thinking about cutting good people. The Chinese TV in Toronto - Fairchild TV - they used to have Toronto News Anchors and Vancouver News Anchors at 7PM NEWS in Toronto and Vancouver. However started January 1st, 2018 There will be no more Toronto News Anchors. Vancouver News Anchors are replacing them.

Sad to see this situation.

I am so saddened to hear Bell media has fired Lance Brown and Joe Tilley. They are two great gentlemen. CTV news will no longer be watched by me. Here I come Global. So glad I am with Rogers for my, phone, internet and cable tv. Get rid of Andrea C. the laughing hyena, even when reporting drastic news, she has that stupid grin, look at me. She is always standing around when the weather person is talking, look at me I am the greatest. Bell Media is a POS!!!!!

January 9, 2018 @ 12:28 AM

Pamela House

Best of luck to the two classiest guys that once worked at CTV. You will be greatly missed and I for one will never watch CTV news again. Joe and Lance you were and are are the greatest guys, so all the best in 2018, hope you both successful in finding a new job. Good Guys always come out on top.... Bell Media SHAME, SHAME and SHAME on you. - I hope you lose billions in the coming year.

January 9, 2018 @ 12:42 AM

I for one am rapidly finding other source for all of my entertainment that have nothing to do with the troglodytes that run Bell Media. The worst thing that the CTRC ever allowed was for the carriers to start owning the content.

C'mon, the owners of the content were doing OK before Bell threw wheelbarrows full of our money at them. Who wouldn't sell out?

January 10, 2018 @ 8:53 PM

werent they tsn sport where the sport know!

January 20, 2018 @ 12:35 AM

Get rid of DANA, TOM, and ZURAIDA. The most annoying people ever!!!!!

Anwar is the only one capable of doing weather

Bring Lance Brown back.

January 26, 2018 @ 12:03 AM

Andrea Case and Dana ...... get them off

January 26, 2018 @ 12:07 AM

Don Luther

I just realized after watching CTV on the weekend that they no longer had Sports on the weekend anymore... I was hoping that it was only on the weekends but again tonight (Monday) No Sports... At least nothing that i would consider a Sports Report so i am done watching CTV News until they Bring Back a Real Sports Report Nightly... It's Disgusting what they are doing to save a few dollars... Why don't they get rid of the Weather Report it's never accurate anyway... CTV News you are going to lose a lot of faithful customers... I am Done and i am sure i will not be the only one.

January 29, 2018 @ 7:36 PM

Instead of Lance Brown, Better choice should have been Andrea Case. Zuraidah Alman,
Dana Levsonsen and Tom Brown. Most irritating people on CTV news.

January 30, 2018 @ 12:10 AM

paul couch

if you want to lay off someone start with c.t.v. joe Brown weather broadcaster total waste of money people don't want to see 10min watching brown talk about what's happening 0n the radar he and the rest of your weather broadcasters are a complete ,i repeat a complete waste of time and money you just lost a customer of 20 years since you nickle and dimed the best sports crew ever you threw them right out the door i will never watch bell media it's roger's for life BELL MEDIA CAN SUCK IT I HATE ANYTHING TO DO WIHT BELL TAKE A PAGE OUT OF ROGER'S YOU WILL DEFINATLY LEARN HOW A BIG COMPANY LIKE ROGER'S IS SUPPOSED TO BE RUN BELL MEDIA DOUCHE BAGS THAT IS 100%

January 30, 2018 @ 5:08 AM

Simple solution to all this ctv turmoil and 2nd rate news . Switched to global and city. Less Liberal content. Report on sports and weather in particular much more condensed and professionally presented. Bring back Lance to global or city please:. Hey everybody! Dana please stop doing weather..not good presentation skills

January 30, 2018 @ 11:41 PM

I don't watch tv Toronto news anymore. Bell the worst company to work for had a great team. Keep the dead wood at the top

does gerry r wear a MAGA hat?

Delighted to see Joe kicked down the road. I was a great fan of Lance's, but Joe's hate of Mats Sundin when he wouldn't take a trade as his contract ran out was about as low class and immature as it could possibly be. Mats had a contract & stuck with it unlike the mouth that roared with merde from Joe. Good riddance to him.

April 17, 2018 @ 5:34 PM

I don’t know who she’s related to to keep her reading the weather but Dana is a joke. She stands facing her cue cards and reaching awkwardly to each city, while still facing left to read and then, when she’s about to sign off, facing the camera. I’ve got no tv experience but I, and anyone who can read, could do her job!
Pretty face but come on!
