John Saunders, Dead at 61

John SaundersJohn Saunders was 61. He was the television play-by-play announcer for the Toronto Raptors from 1995 to 2001, eventually being replaced by Chuck Swirsky. He also hosted and provided play-by-play for a variety of sports on ESPN and ABC.

This was very sad news. 61 is too young.

I have a soft spot for the early days of City TV (not so much the later days), and I still think of him as a CityPulse sports anchor who happens to have done other things for the last while.

Yes, I missed his CityTV days. I believe he left there in '82.

61 is far too young.

He did an interview years ago talking about his time in a US city -- Cleveland or Baltimore or somewhere like that. He said he often had to suppress a smile when the Jays would beat the "home team".

One of the better guys in sports. Professional, smooth delivery and knew his stuff - played hockey at the university level.

More of today's hosts/announcers need to emulate his style instead the clownish way they often pursue.
