Talk to me like I'm a 5 year old. If the UK leaves the Euro, what does it mean for me?

June 24, 2016 @ 8:44 AM

It'll likely mean the end of the United Kingdom. Scotland signaled it would do whatever possible to keep ties with the EU (read separation). Northern Ireland has said it intend to re-"unificate" with Ireland. The EU has an open border policy with immigration & movement of labor so if you happen to be French and work in the UK you might not be working there. And today if you own stocks you're losing a shitload of money (yay for gold bullion).

Next shoe to drop will be if Trump is elected in the USA.
A quick rant on the charities I automatically donate to every month. Stop calling me to bump up my donations every 4-6 weeks. The next one that calls will be asked to take me off the recall list, and if they persist, discontinuation of my donation will happen. Just aggravating.

With the exception of your last sentence, all of your predictions are long term and even then not guaranteed.

When I found out Obama, Clinton and George Sorors were on the "remain" side I knew the best thing for the UK was to leave. Brexit, baby, brexit!

The Argo home opener at their new home is 95% of a sell out, and they get blown out. Not a great start to the BMO Field era.

June 24, 2016 @ 9:08 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I was all set to take the whole family to that game, but had to bail for familial reasons.

Argos are definitely going to be more fun to watch at BMO than the dome.

June 24, 2016 @ 9:11 AM

Argos home opener was, fun, loud and had the feel of an NFL game. The team on the other hand......

June 24, 2016 @ 9:19 AM

Diamondbacks won last night. Great win. The closer got the win, Brad Ziegler. Jake Lam again, another home run. He's so good. How could anyone not like Jake Lam. Anyway, I hate Rogers. They are forcing us to get these high definition boxes. If we don't get them, then we have to pay a stupid fee. I don't know how much it actually is, but the condo is with fricken Rogers. I called them and asked about our building and they said it's up to the building about the contract. Anyway, there is going to be a big long eight hour meeting in the party room of the building on August 2 from 11:00 to 7:00. That's a very very long meeting and we will get our boxes. Well, I don't want a fricken box but I also don't want to pay a fee either. Grocery Gateway is at it again. They changed the web site. Just like that it is all changed. It sucks because now I can't order online anymore. I had to call in my order over the phone and I get a phone service fee of $5.00 charged. This sucks because it's a new web site so I am going to get ahis stupid charge all the time of $5.00 just because I ordered over the phone.

June 24, 2016 @ 9:19 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

If you talk to Grocery Gateway and explain you're visually impaired and there is an accessibility issue with their website, I'm sure they'll waive the $5 charge.

And if you talk to them, explain everything, and they refuse to waive the $5, let me know. Because that's not right and I might be able to help you.

June 24, 2016 @ 9:22 AM

As an expat, I say good on ya England. If Scotland and Northern Ireland want to leave, let them. They can fork out millions of pounds to the EU coffers. They can get snowed under by mass migration. Don't expect England to help with defence of your borders or your healthcare. England is now free to negotiate trade deals with India, China and if Trump gets in, a strong ally, in the United States. England can make its own decisions and for that I am happy.

June 24, 2016 @ 9:23 AM

They may be more fun to watch at BMO, but will enough people still want to watch? The next game is Wednesday, July 13th. That's almost 3 weeks from now! Whatever positive vibe or goodwill from the home opener will have dissipated by then. And a Wednesday?! The next gaem after that is a Monday! I know school will be out, but those are still weekdays. And most of the summer games are weekday games. I just looked on Ticketmaster and there are a lot of tickets available for the next game.

If you want to make this "tailgating" experiment to work, to get people to go, then you need to make it a real event. Make it a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, 1-3pm kickoff, get fans to arrive early to soak up the atmosphere, make it an all day affair. How many people are going to leave work early to catch the Go train in their work clothes to go to the party in the parking lot, or organize a real BBQ after renting one of those "tailgating" slots?

The real test will be the attendance when the opposition is not the TiCats or the Roughriders. How many local fans will show up then?

June 24, 2016 @ 9:32 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

That's just it.

The home opener at BMO was an event. That's what attracted me to it. I wanted to be a part of the event.

I want the Argos to be successful, but I know so few fans. I'm really rooting for an Argos resurgence now that they're out of that cavernous dome.

There are a few people who like to argue with me that the Argos are more popular in Toronto than the Raptors. This boggles my mind. When pressed for evidence, considering everything suggests the Raptors are far more popular here, the only thing these people ever point to is national TV ratings. Yes, the CFL does well in the PPM surveys.

But in reality, when it comes to people who will pay to watch and get excited about a playoff game or seeing a member of the team, etc.... the Argos are well behind the Jays, Leafs and Raptors.... they're in TFC territory with poorer attendance.

So let's see how this plays out. I'll know things are changing when I can count the Argos fans I know on more than one hand.

Isolationism never works economically, especially for an island like the UK with minimal natural resources. You need a free flow or products and more importantly labour in order to continue to grow. brexit stunts that. So while a giant middle finger to the establishment is nice, shooting yourself in the foot is not

June 24, 2016 @ 9:45 AM

Are you going to go to a game this season? Or were you going to just go to the home opener because it was an event. Because is you want them to be successful, buy tickets, go to a game.

I'm not a huge CFL fan, but I'd go to a game and the experience if it fit into my schedule. But their schedule sucks.

Home games - Thursday (last night), Wednesday, Monday (non-holiday), Friday, Saturday afternoon, Wednesday, Sunday afternoon, Monday afternoon in October (?), Saturday afternoon.

TiCat home games - Friday, Friday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday afternoon (Labour day), Friday, Saturday, Friday, Friday, Saturday.

I point out the Ticat schedule as a comparison because their schedule looks a lot better.

It still looks like the Argos are still second fiddle in their home. I suspect that TFC (or other events like Rugby) have the better dates. It still looks like the Argos are set to fail.

The British now will be able to govern themselves instead of having to obey laws passed in Brussels.

They got their independence back!

I use the Bikeshare thingy and this week it's been a dogs breakfast. The system was shut down last Friday over the entire weekend for upgrades, and we were promised it would be fully functional by this past Monday morning..but no..all week it's been pretty much down until yesterday, and even now it's only about 90%. So now the problem is, you don't know which stations are activated and online, and either do the cust.service reps, so when you call in it really throws a wrench into your commute. And even if you do get lucky and find a station that's online, the station you return it to might not be, and you aren't able to lock in the bike.

I can see a delay of a few hours or even an extra day or so..but this was a complete failure on management's part.

Bowmanville zoo is closing and for that i did a happy dance. One less zoo in the world is good in my books. Hopefully more are coming - like Toronto and HighPark. Zoos should be banned. I think in 150 years people will look back and think of us as barbarians for having had zoos.

Brexit - I am in complete and utter shock. I think a mistake has been made. A major mistake. Cameron out! WOW! And to make it worse - it was such a tight race - the country is now divided. I thought Scotland would have been much more in the Remain than it was. The pound is down so thats good for me personally as my DH goes over there for most of July.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:11 AM

Ryan G

Yea it's reasonable, and i like that i don't have to worry about a lock and maintaining my own bike. I've never had an issue with finding an empty dock when i'm done, or finding a station without bikes. To that end there's an app that tells you what docks have available bikes/spaces, and it's quite convenient. often times too i'll only want a 1 way ride, where i might be walking somewhere else or heading in a cab somewhere, so if i had my own bike i'd have to worry about getting it back, etc, so overall i like it. Let's hope this one bump is only a hiccup. At least they indicated they'd give you an extra week for free given the issues this week.

I'm happy for those who think the Brexit was a good thing but i'm not convinced it was a good thing for the UK or anybody else.

I have Scottish/Irish roots so naturally think the english are twats but i do hope this works out for them.

I read a fair amount of commentary and analysis in the weeks leading up to the vote and i think emotion won over reason as it so often does.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:18 AM

Ben V

@James Edgar: Emotion didn't win over xenophobia with a dash of racism did. It's Donald Trump supporters under a different name. To say that the British couldn't govern themselves because the EU was passing laws for them is laughable.

The biggest liar of them all Nigel Farage, who openly let people in his group be racist and ran ads telling the British people would have their money back for the NHS. Their main campaign was based on this too.

Go to the link below. This is the UKIP leader 1 hour after the brexit win.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:28 AM

John M.

james you are correct, it was a win of heart over head.

How many people here would vote for Canada to join a North American Union with a headquarters i Costa Rica? The new union would make all the laws and Canada would only get one vote. Now there would be lots of great economic arguments in favour and think of the trade deals we could make with the world.

But don't you want Canada to be ruled by Canadians? You may not like the premier or the prime minister but they are Canadian and we can vote them out at the next election.

I was interested in how much it became an issue of "The Elites want the UK to remain in the EU." The media, foreign leaders, academics were saying Remain. Only old, uneducated people want to leave.

But England and Wales voted to be run by London not Brussels. YAY!

June 24, 2016 @ 10:28 AM

John M.

GUNTer, you won't mind zoos closing if that means the extinction of animals that now only exist in zoos?

Zoos do provide an important conservation role.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:31 AM

Britain will have no shortage of trading partners from more reliable, civilized countries. Sure, there might be some short term pain (caused by the likes of George Soros) but in the long run this will benefit Britain.

I'm sure Germany, Holland and France will be seeing how the UK do and might just follow suit in the future.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:41 AM

I think Brexit is really more of a symbol of a planet where folks are getting sick of growing corporate control & governments who are puppets to big business interests. Of course the bigots come along for the ride because they see it as a way to stop immigration.

I'm a "anarchist living in a Montana nuclear bunker" outlaw type. I loathe government, big business & the establishment. I really do believe in freedom, guns, property rights & liberty. But I also realize the system is extremely powerful & attempts to shake it off will have serious consequences. London's banking sector needs to look at Montreal to see what happens when you start to politically destabilize. Further, the next battle is about the UK Continental shelf and who owns the rights. 30 billion barrels are waiting to be extracted most of it to be used to power EU cars.

Hey, I know lots of people that were anti oil sands & are now unemployed, out of savings and in dire straights. Those same people would do anything to have that high paying oil sands gig back. Careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:47 AM

@Toronto Mike re: Argos vs Raptors TV numbers

I have no evidence of this at all but my hunch is that a majority of individuals who watch Raptors are not only younger but catching the game via streaming services (whether legal or illegal) which I don't think count towards TV numbers. Argos in particular seem to appeal to an older demographic who may not be as tech-savvy to stream a game and chromecast it to their TVs.

IMO, I think the Argos will do fine in the short term but as the aging fan base passes on there is going to be a significant struggle to bring young people to the game. It is worth noting that when current Argo fans became Argo fans, their only source of football was the 1 or 2 NFL games broadcast OTA or the CFL. Say what you will about the difference in the games but my guess is that new football fans will gravitate towards the NFL due to the quality of the game and access to any game (or team) they want.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:47 AM

I think thats apples and Oranges John. the UK and the rest of the EU share very similar ideals on morality, socialism vs capitalist ideals, and the general state of the way things should be. So passing laws on most of these items has little to no effect on the UK because they believe in the same basic principles

Canada vs US vs Mexico are so fundamentally different on these principles that a union makes no sense. God, the USA can't even agree as a country on their fundamental principles, Thats why individual states have so much power and the feds have so little

So I don't think you can compare a EU to a NAU

Yes I support the closing of all zoos even if it means we lose species. Losing species is an incredibly terrible thing to happen, but to live in captivity when you are a wild animal is worse, imo.
Zoos are horrific, even the ones that are 'well respected, regulated, etc' and those are in the minority.

There was a huge thread on Reddit about the Bike Share stuff:

Communication sucked. Apparently it fell behind mostly because it was too hot for them to work quickly? It was kind of an insane project anyway to convert 80 stations in 72 hours...

A lot of people were wondering why they were doing this during peak season -- the main reason is that they had to before they can finally expand the system later this summer (compatibility issues -- no suppliers for the old system). I'd rather have lost a week of usage and get an expanded system, personally.

I used to use it daily, all through winter too, but since my last year lapsed I've been rollerblading. I'll sign up again when skates aren't convenient.

Re the Argos....

Opening night or not, not for a second did I even consider attending last night's game.

If the Argos want me as a fan, they need to have a better schedule, no weeknights.
CFL needs to get away from weeknight games - I'm not even watching, let alone attending games. My kids have their events on weeknights, and the choice/decision is an easy one for me.

The Argos also have to reduce their ticket prices - too expensive. The value just isn't there.

@ another steve YES with the amount of teams in the CFL Toronto Argos 16 out of 18 weeks should be playing on a Fri/Sat/Sun

Re: the Argos...

I went to the game on Thursday, and was extremely impressed with what the Argos have accomplished. The stadium looked great (pretty much everything but the seats was double blue) and the game day experience was outstanding - the pre-game show, the Argos alumni that showed up (Pinball, Theismann, Damon Allen, and the Rocket), even the cheerleaders put on a good performance with some hilarious surprises. It wasn't perfect - I think the Ticats put on a slightly better presentation - but it was very enjoyable.

The stadium is fabulous for football. There was a point in the 3rd quarter when the Argos were mounting a comeback, and I was blown away by the roar of the fans, as enthusiastic as anything I have ever seen live (and I am a Ticats fan...) Everything was SO MUCH better than the depressing ambiance of a half-empty dome.

The crowd was much younger than I expected, and very diverse. I hope that anyone with any inkling of checking out a game just puts aside the excuses and gets down there - the game day experience will convert a lot of people. The team is actively targeting local fans in places like Liberty Village, for whom a weeknight game is no problem.

BTW, the Monday afternoon game in October is Thanksgiving - that game should be a sellout with a great pregame party.

The Brits truly have big cajones to take this on. Maybe it was time something shook up this new world order. This maybe the trigger for interest rates in the financial markets to get back to a reasonable return, as negative rates aren't turning the EU economy around soon.
Too funny Mike, you can call me anytime, as i know you have beer!

June 24, 2016 @ 10:12 PM

You know when black people riot & then loot & burn down their own neighborhood? Well Brexit is the "wealthy old white guy" version of doing that.

In the larger picture though, Brexit has many similarities with the rise of Trump, Anonymous (hackers), Black Lives Matter & even Bernie Sanders success. It's all about the disillusionment with modern government, big corporations & big media. Each group has it's own reasons for being against the system but in general they're all against the same thing.

It's no surprise either. This is generation cynical and they've every right to be. They're heard the shit spewed by politicians. They've heard the shit spewed by big corporations. And they've watched the media play hand puppet to both factions.

We live in the Kingdom of Bullshit.

The government & big business treats the people with the same contempt that radio or media treats their audience. They assume they're stupid fucking idiots & can be brainwashed. It's old skool thinking & it's not working anymore. Who knows what will come of it all but bring on the change. We need it.

June 24, 2016 @ 10:52 PM

to ^^

Other day I saw Rona Ambrose on some rant about how the increase CPP was a "tax" on working people. She seemed outraged that the current government would dare increase the cost of saving for ones retirement (so we can get better quality cat food). And her robot partisans cheered her on.

Obviously Ms Ambrose is one stupid #bimbo because she seems to have forgotten the part about how she'll get an iron clad pension that's richer than even an auto worker or a pilot. And the taxpayers WILL pay for her retirement. And I guess she's forgot about her 6 figure income, second home, tax free income, etc all covered by the working class. And yet she somehow imagines she's "with the common man".

That's why Trump has so much support. That's why Bernie has so much support. And when Brits look at the EU, they see overpaid zealous fat cats looking to control their lives. There's anger yonder in them hills partner. And it's coming. And it's about fucking time.

How about those Orioles. Great win. Ashur Toliver got his first win. Wonderful. Adam Jones and many Machado each homered. Zach Britton picked up his 22nd save. Wonderful game and doubleheader today with games at 1:00 and 7:00. My Diamondbacks won as well. That's great. Yasmani Tomas got two home runs. Another great thing. As for the CFL, I really don't care about that league. I love the NFL though. As for Grocery Gateway, they did take the phone charge away by giving me an inconvenience credit of $11.00 so that was nice. I hope they do that with the next order. The thing is the lady on Grocery Gateway I talked to yesterday said that everything is still on the web site and I should be able to use it. Well, who knows. Thing is I started to put in an order when the old site was still up. It had to be put in again though when the new site came up. Anyway, I hate Rogers. What would I do with this box that I have to get. I don't watch TV. I have been saying this all along. Cable is something that everyone who wants it should pay for it, not the building. Cable is a luxury item so if you don't want it, you shouldn't have to pay for it. I hate Rogers and that will never change. I never had their internet though, but I wouldn't go with them because I like Primus. I know what Bell's internet is like and it's horrible. They are down a couple times a week. Primus is hardly ever down.

June 25, 2016 @ 6:06 AM

@Sid_V -
Do you go to Ti-Cats games? The Argos just raised the bar for what tailgating, pre-game and half-time should look like - at least in southern Ontario. I was very pleased with the game. I am a Ti-Cats season ticket holder. What the Ti-Cats have been putting on the field has been sufficient for me to make the one hour-plus drive to the game (about an hour going home), so I've given them a break on most of the other stuff. It will be interesting to see what the Ti-Cats do for the home opener on July 1st.

Let it burn. Guess that's what you get for believing a politician.

June 25, 2016 @ 2:30 PM

Brexit is exposing the fundamental flaw in the EU system.
It's a shared currency but every member country controls it's own budget. It's a shared parliament that can't enforce any law, ordinance or resolution without the active engagement of each member country, so even though both nations are in the EU, you'd find countries like Germany and Greece that theoretically are playing by the same rules, but in reality do whatever works best for themselves.
It's set up as if the United States had no Fed to regulate the economy, no FBI, CIA, police or armed forces to enforce the laws and no State Department responsible for foreign policy. Basically, they've built a stool with 2 legs-there's no way it could work.
I feel bad for the people (especially the youth) of the UK since they are now headed into no-mans-land, but I hope this means the rest of the EU will take this as a wake-up call to either start again from scratch or tear the thing down because they aren't benefiting the citizens they are supposed to be serving this way.

June 25, 2016 @ 4:02 PM

Well, how about those Orioles. They swept a doubleheader. That's so awesome. They are an awesome team. The first game was a 5 to 0 win and Kevin Gausman finally got a win. let's hope he keeps it up. The second game Chris tillman was shaky, but they won 8 to 6. They were losing it in the beginning though. Anyway, but they came back and won with two home runs by Matt Wieters and Chris Davis and Adam Jones also hit homers. It's awesome. My Diamondbacks didn't do so well though as they lost. Anyway, I thought I would try putting in another Grocery Gateway order for the next couple weeks. The web site is working now, thank goodness. I still prefer the old site though, but at least it works. It really rips me off though if I have to get a Rogers box or pay extra. As I said, Cable is a luxury item. It shouldn't be included in condo fees. I have been saying this all along. Anyone who wants that stuff should pay for it. Like right now I am paying for Rogers, but don't use Rogers. Anyway, rogers and Bell are both bad companies. They send junk mail all the time and they want more customers. Primus never does that so that's why I like Primus. I'm with Primus forever and ever.

It didn't take long for the globalists to go after the UK. Moodys (that credible rating agency that gave all those credit default swaps AAA that led to the debacle in 2008) just downgraded the UK credit rating to AA.

Seems like the globalists are digging in their bag of tricks early. Hopefully, the people of the UK stay strong cuz u know its going to be painful.

& did u notice all the endorsements for the Remain side came from celebrities, musicians, sports athletes. Like they all care. They are all out of touch with the common man.

The globalists are like the mafia. U can join but u can never leave without a repercussion.

Agree & disagree - both my sons are baseball & BBall fanatics. I love hockey & Baseball, forget NBA for me.
Both are following Euro Cup also.
That's the state of Sports in T.Dot. With Austin Mathews pick, that will change for the better as we all hope.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw this headline. Does the Star really believe their readers are that stupid to believe this is something that might catch on??? I know the answer to that: its yes they do believe they're stupid and YES, their readers really are stupid.

Argie - why wouldn't LGBTQ and Muslim communities come together and fight hatred with love? I would welcome and embrace that. I really just read The Star for the comics though :-)

How about those Orioles. Another win. It was a slugfest though winning 12 to 5. My favourite player, Mark Trumbo got some hits so hopefully he is out of his slump. He hit a home run and he is back to the top of the AL with 22 home runs. Chris Davis also hit a grand slam and Jonathan Schoop hit a homer as well. My Diamondbacks didn't do well losing another one. That's no good at all. Anyway, so on August 2, we have to get these new Rogers boxes or else we will have to pay if we don't get them. It sucks. I don't like Rogers or Bell. Primus is really good. I wish everyone would just start using Primus and get rid of Rogers and Bell.

June 27, 2016 @ 10:18 AM

My Orioles didn't play last night. My Diamondbacks lost and boy did they ever 8 to 0. Anyway, there is a baseball pool. Bill decided to start one in the middle of the season. At first I said if Mike is in it, I don't want to join. He said he is, but he talked to him and if I win, he will find a way to give me the money if I don't mind waiting for it if I have to. Anyway, I have six teams. I have my Orioles in the AL east. AL central I have the Indians. AL west I have the Rangers. NL east I have the Braves unfortunately. I wanted the Nationals or the Mets, but they're taken. NL central I have the Pirates and I have my Diamondbacks in the NL west. Anyway, so I hope I win it, but I'm stuck with the Braves. Oh well, the rest will do okay I think.

My Orioles won last night. That's great. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched surprisingly well. Hyun Su Kim hit his second home run. I hope he will be rooky of the year. My Diamondbacks lost though unfortunately. Even though Jake Lam and Yasmani Tomas both homered, my diamondbacks lost. As for my pool, AL is great. Indians and Rangers won. NL sucks though. My Diamondbacks lost. Also the Pirates lost and the Braves lost, but the Indians beat the Braves so that still gives me a win. I have the sucky Pirates and the sucky Braves. I'm probably not going to win the pool because of the NL, but I can't help it. I wish the Cubs and Mets weren't taken or the Cardinals and Nationals, but that's how it worked out. They picked their teams before I had a chance. I was lucky in the AL because nobody believed in my Orioles. Nobody believed in the Indians either. I wanted the Royals, but I'm actually glad I took the Indians. Nobody wanted the Rangers because of Odor, so nobody took them. Anyway, maybe as long as my AL teams keep it up, then it won't matter if the NL teams suck or not.

NHL trade

Taylor Hall 1 for 1 with Adam Larsson (NJD). HELLO!! You're Kidding.
Edm. needs cap space but this is ridiculous just like having Detroit get rid of Datysuk;s contract after already signed in KHL.
Being a Leaf fan I'd rather wait until next year, Don't sign Stamkos & Taveres would be a better commodity for rebuild.

June 29, 2016 @ 3:54 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Stamkos just signed in Tampa Bay. As you know, I didn't want him here, anyway. It's too early for that move, he's not the same guy since he broke his leg and I'd rather gun for Tavares next year.

Subban for Weber is a monster deal. Straight up, I actually like this deal for the Habs, but literally nobody agrees with me.

Subban/Weber Trade
I totally didn't see that coming but I love it! Don't get me wrong I always liked Subban but Webber is better and has a heluva shot. Habs also signed Andrew Shaw which I like too.

Larsson for Hall
Stupid trade. What's Chiarelli thinking? I get that Edmonton is close to the cap and obviously they gotta make some moves, but wtf? It's Taylor Hall. Edmonton should've gotten more for him.

June 29, 2016 @ 11:38 PM

Yes, about Subban. He's a very good player, but does some stupid stuff like run to the refs all the time or injure someone's hand on purpose. I was shocked at the Subban trade, but maybe it will make my Habs better, who knows. Also hopefully Carey Price will be back. Well, my Orioles won again. Mark Trumbo hit is 23rd home run and he is on top. My Diamondbacks lost though which is not good. The Indians won again. Orioles and Indians are on top of their divisions, both hot right now great for my pool. Rangers lost unfortunately. I shouldn't complain because the Rangers are also on top and the AL is doing well. Well, I did get an NL win. The Pirates won last night so that helps my pool out as well. Anyway, I would like to get rid of the sucky Braves. I could have taken the Phillies, but they also suck except when they play my Diamondbacks.
