Memo to MLSE: Don't Mess with the Maple Leafs Logo

According to Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net, the Maple Leafs are expected to unveil both a new logo and entirely new uniforms in time for the 2016-17 season, which will be their 100th as a franchise in the National Hockey League.

It’s all just part of the Leafs’ plans to go all out in celebrating their centennial season; a series of throwback jerseys is also in the cards which would, at the very least, include a re-appearance by the green Toronto St. Patricks uniform from the 1920s.

After evolving their logo steadily throughout the 43 years following their adoption of the “Maple Leafs” name in 1927, the team has made only very minor changes to their logo in the 45 years since. Introduced in 1970, the current Leafs logo sharpened its corners and plumped up a bit in 1982, then darkened its blue for 1987.

If MLSE is considering a logo that doesn't look exactly like one of the ones shown above, I only have one thing to say to them:

Don't.

MLSE will not pass up the opportunity in the centennial year to fully cash in, and that includes their uniforms and logo, so the word don't was never an option, the only question is how far they will go with the new looks, both current and retro designs.

According to TSN's Rick Westhead, jerseys etc with a new logo will not be a big money-maker. Funny though, Leaf fans want a culture change and love Lou etc but when they make moves to change stuff, people flinch

@Rob J

We want the product on the ice changed, not the uniforms.

I'd like to see what they have to offer before I judge. They've got the longest (or is it second longest) amount of time in their history without a tweak.

If the tweak is taking a historic logo and removing the text, like this, that's fine.

I do not like the current logo's font. The ones on the jerseys do not look like your sample above. They look like a K-Mart special knock-off.

Some proofs of concept were leaked of the new Toronto Maple Leaf centennial year logo. What do you think? ;) pic.twitter.com/1JPHLd8cYb

I'd be fine if they were to go back to the 62-67 Logo. Remind us of when they were winning Championships .

And I don't care much either way. The uniforms and etc will mean nothing until they actually win something.

MLSE: "But, but, but...there is SO much money to be taken from our bottomless wallets/purses/bank accounts of all of our zealots disciples devotees jumkies fans!!!"

as long as it contains a leaf of come kind I don't see the issue..
as for the leak..I think that would look good as an arm badge but not on the chest.

sorry "of some kind"

MLSE should have learned from the Blue Jays because when they messed with their logo all those years ago it did such wonders for them. *sarcasm*

I fully expect Bell & Rogers to fully exploit the centennial season to levels never seen before in an effort to separate consumers from their hard earned income.

Aside from the occasional season, the Leafs have been an embarrassment for far too long,

Current management has the right idea, so I'm hopeful, but cautious.

I haven't bought any fan gear since the end of the Ballard era.
Made sure family & friends didn't buy me any gear as gifts during Stavro's ownership.
And that won't change during the centennial celebration.

Bell & Rogers, separately and collectively, have proven to be poor stewards of their various sports franchises. Pick a team, pick a season, no championship, essentially just mediocrity.

It's unfortunate that pro sports is such a minor financial stake in the big conglomerate media empires of Bell & Rogers. Content is all the owners are concerned about. The concept of teams that "win" increase revenues continues to be neglected by George Cope and Guy Laurence their money grabbing minions.

If fans/consumers would stop accepting mediocrity from Bell & Rogers, and stop using their services, things would change much faster.

Memo to Leaf fans expecting Stamkos to sign here: It will never happen. Despite being a local boy and leaf fan growing up, he like every other athlete from Canada will stay in the US. Once you've had the best, why leave?

Hoping that the Leafs take a page from the Tampa Bay Jays-Rays redesign, BUDs written diagonally across a plain blue hockey sweater!

i laughed ..

@CQ

i laughed but i actually like "BUDS" for an alternate 3rd jersey :)

Stamkos is about 50% a Leaf :)
doesn't mean he will be..but I think its there in his head..see what they have to offer..assuming they believe he fits the new project they got going on there.
I do believe he isn't going to be in Tampa though..
