Just wanted to say I was given a new Laptop at work (after 8 YEARS) and It Rocks. Not worth the wait but very close . It's amazing to to have as many things open at once as I do and not have to reboot everyday at around 11;00am and 3:00pm to get the resources unstuck. and that's me being as careful as possible to not run too much at one time.

This should concern people. Mexican cartels setting up shop in Canada. It's acknowledged that Mara Salvatrucha is already in Toronto (MS13, though they're a LA based operation, not Mexican).

For all of you who thumping you chests that cannabis should stay illegal, remember this. BC bud is used as a currency to import drugs. They ship up cocaine, we ship cannabis south. The more the Feds squeeze on something, the higher the price goes.

@mike: I like that you put the # of comments in the "discuss" button. I was missing that number. =)

The addition of the large first letter is interesting, I guess you're going for a print-magazine feel?

The only thing is the front page feels a bit busy. I think it's because it's hard to tell when one article ends and the other begins. I think it's because there's too many "large solid blue" things on the screen when quickly scrolling through. And they don't really go from "biggest / boldest / most solid" down to "smallest / lightest ".

Though, I think you can solve that with just a SLIGHT differentiation between article blocks. I was thinking a heavy, dark, solid line (or at least mid-grey to dark gradient) between the articles, plus a LITTLE bit more whitespace so they don't visually flow into each other.

Also, if you took that light light gradient you have, and put it underneath the byline, it would help the byline standout from the article, and help the article stand on its own. Right now the byline and main article kinda flatten into each other.

Here's what I mean:

(sidenote: the image doesn't come up on the new Preview screen, so I'll paste the link here just in case):

Don't look now, but the Leafs are only 3 points behind the Habs with 2 games in hand.

4x4 Time

Sitting in the food court at a downtown Montreal underground mall at lunchtime earlier this week. 20 or so kids walk in, I am guessing 13-14 years old, all dressed in tuxedo’s. One kid goes up a piano starts playing and all the rest of the kids start singing Hallelujah. Half way through the song, a lot of people in the area are singing along. They finish the tune and leave. Seems they were students from Opera de Montreal….Very cool to see…

I think I'll lose the heavy button on the home page for discussing the entry. I thought I'd try it as an alternative to the old "Permalink" link.

And, I'll add a little more padding between the entries.

The large first letter is just something new I'm trying. We'll see if it sticks. I'm very much in a "try anything" mode.

@4x4 Time

I love those types of flash mob/popup artistic moments. One of the great things about the city (any city).

December 12, 2014 @ 9:59 AM

Do you think your more intelligent than your wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend?

I don't mean it as a put down. You are with this person because you love them more than the stars and moon but in your heart you know you are definitely smarter.

Have you ever discussed it with them or do you wisely keep it to yourself?

Not sure we can do this without spoilers, but does anyone here watch SOA? What did you think of the finale?

I personally thought it ended exactly the way it had to.

It was a great show with some amazing characters, but I'm glad it's over.

December 12, 2014 @ 10:01 AM

@ Al - I too will try to keep it spoiler-free. But I was very happy with he finale. As you said, it ended exactly how it had too....there was really no other way.

Oh and "Come Join the Murder" (the song playing at the end) is a great tune. Apparently Kurt Sutter wrote it for the finale. I downloaded it and have been listening to it quite regularly

Here's my controversial opinion of the day.

Humble and Fred on Toronto Mike's podcast (ep 100) was 100x better than Humble and Fred on their podcast.

I've read a lot about how the musical montages in SOA, constituted lazy writing and I completely disagree. I think they're great for setting moods and build drama. Plus I love their music selections.

I don't watch SOA, but there was a musical montage in every season finale of The Wire and they were fantastic.

Musical montage does not automatically equal lazy writing.

Looking forward to finally being home for a few days... I get Christmas off for the first time in 5 years.

@Royal Pain Al

I'm a fan of Sons of Anarchy so much I bought the show on iTunes. I liked the show, but it was time to end it. There simply wasn't more they could do with that story line. The acting was excellent, especially Gemma, Nero, Bobby Elvis & Clay Morrow. I wasn't so sold on Jax Teller.

Kudos to Kurt Sutter for his research on "biker lifestyle". The design of the SoA patch, the hierarchy of a 1% MC, the proper use of flash, all characters having a nickname & even calling their meetings "Church". It's likely because there were no less than 3 members of the Hells Angels in the cast. Frankie Diamonds was HA, and Quinn & Happy Lowman are both active members of Hells Angels. Happy, the stone cold killer in SoA wore a tattoo that said "Filthy Few". It's said that Filthy Few is flash earned for killing a enemy in front of another member. It's official HA symbolism.

I really thought Alvarez played the best part of a MC President. He was calm & collected yet ruthless. He killed his own son for fucking up. Your MC family comes before your own family. Plus I just LOVE Mayan bikes. Most were Harley Fat Boys with ape hangers. They look awesome.

December 12, 2014 @ 10:50 AM

@ Al - Again, we are in complete agreement. I think Sutter over-used the montage thing in later seasons (pretty much every episode ended with one from Se5-7) but i don't chalk that up to lazy writing, and yeah, the songs are awesome.

5 Favourite Songs used in SOA (in no particular order):

The Forest Rangers (the house band for the show, they do most the songs) - Gimmie Shelter
Jane's Addiction - Sympathy for the Devil
The Forest Rangers - John the Revalator
Straylight Run - Hands in the Sky
The Forest Rangers - Come Join the Murder (from the final scene of the show)

Honorable Mention:

Katey Segal - To Sir with Love

December 12, 2014 @ 10:55 AM

Al The Royal Pain

I agree with with everything you wrote. Early on in season one of the series, I thought that Gemma was going to be the star of this show. I was surprised to read somewhere that Sutter originally saw her as a secondary character. Kudos to Katey Segal for elevating Gemma...she was ruthless, frightening and mothering all at the same time.

I loved when they added Jimmy Smits. The Nero character was so essential as the conscience of the show as the MC slipped deeper and Jax's character became darker. Watching Nero react to all the crazy shit that happened to the MC was both hilarious and grounding. Without Nero, there would be no possibility for Jax's redemption and therefore no stakes for the finale.

December 12, 2014 @ 11:04 AM

Hey, no birthday wishes. It's my birthday. My Cardinals won last night. That's great. My Coyotes didn't do well though. Habs will win tonight and Nets and Suns win tonight. Anyway, my trainer did make it yesterday. He canceled his last client because he wanted to get home early, but he didn't cancel me.

December 12, 2014 @ 11:34 AM

Battleme - Hey Hey, My My (better than the original by Neil Young)

Lions - All Hail (S01E04 when Mayan's attack the Nevada clubhouse). Singer also sang the song above

Richard Thompson - Dad's Gonna Kill Me. AWESOME song, played at Half Sacks funeral during the drive by.

@Royal Pain Al

I think the real truth about Jax is that he wasn't the monster he thought he was. From episode 1 (the dead prostitutes in the fire) he had trouble with true brutality. He was a tortured soul hence the whole "Jesus" look right at the end.

BTW, if you pay attention near the end take notice that one by one 7 crows fly by on screen. The final crow flies up and disappears. There are 7 remaining members of SAMCRO. I think where Sutter really shined is that he was very willing to kill off fan favourites. It's unusual for a TV show, but the reality of life as a gangster. People die & they die violently.

Another kudo to Sutter is for not allowing the sale of Sons of Anarchy vests with patch. If you know anything about biker lifestyle, wearing a 3 piece patch (rocker, color) attracts the wrong type of attention from 1%'ers.

December 12, 2014 @ 11:35 AM

@ Irv -

I took the 7 crows to represent the 7 key members of SAMCRO who's death affected Jax and led to where he finally ended up

Clay (for better or worse, the man raised him form age 11, and would have been around his entire life as a member of the 1st 9)

Remember when you didn't have to ask a sales person where the new music releases were when you went to HMV?

Going to a record store around the holidays used to fun. Now it's just depressing.

@Mike: The refresh/scroll thing keeps happening. I've been blocking javascripts one a time to troubleshoot. This is the one causing the scroll bug:

I don't know what it does (it's minified), I don't seem to have any ill effects blocking it. If it isn't being used, you may want to take it out. I can tell you from experience, when it comes to weird, third party, minified javascripts used to do UI... if it's causing one bug, it'll cause more.

Thanks for all the wishes. My Habs did win. Looks like Carey Price stole the show. Anyway, that's great and my Nets won. Unfortunately my Suns lost though and the Raptors had to win. Doing lousy in the basketball pool. No Habs tonight, but Coyotes tonight and tomorrow my Ravens will win.

If I may, I would love to hear back from anybody who currently works, owns, or rents in the Yonge and Eglinton area. I used to live there back in the late 80's, on Edith Drive, renting an apartment there and being in my late 20's, loved it, able to both skate, play shinny hockey, and tennis right behind the building at the Community Centre.

Since then I moved to Thornhill, where I still live, but this past Fall after 10 years of real estate focusing more in (905), decided to join a progressive, boutique company called PSR, for Private Service Realty, with my home office in the Annex which opened up last year, and the main office in King West, which was opened 6 years ago.

A month ago I decided to focus on Yonge and Eglinton, since it is still close enough to my Midtown office to work, and our brokerage, will be the exclusive brokerage working with Freed Developments for The Art Shoppe, so I will be able to get condos or lofts around Mid-February at our office ahead of all other real estate brokerages. Due to this, and the other project we have going at 155 Redpath, of which Phase 1 is underway, and a Phase 2 likely to follow soon, I have been working with local businesses in the area, giving away free Starbucks coffee, in order to meet and talk to people in the area.

For all of you Toronto Mike followers, and I am one, if you can let me know, and I will check back, what do you enjoy the most about this area, and how do you feel with all of the development going on, as the density fills in, since building up in the city is a reality that is not going away.

Are you excited to have the LRT on Eglinton completed in 2019, which coincidentally is when the Art Shoppe Condos and Lofts will be completed, or are you more concerned about travelling north and south on the subway and how hard it is to do when you can't get on, or are jammed in like sardines?

I am really just looking for an overview, as I want to give back to the community, and am looking for ways to do so. My best times in Toronto was when I was living there with my girlfriend, who became my wife, and at 50 years old, am now actively going back in time.

I consider my wife and I to be of equal intelligence but in different areas. No, that is not a cop out. She is great with kids and dealing with people. I am good technically and with finances. We both have equal knowledge with current events.

@TO Mike

Mike, I like the new website layout. The reading mode allows me to blow up the font nice and big and I do not have to scroll left and right. That is the most important thing to me, so thank you.

Happy Birthday, Cheryl! Your Habs gave you a lovely present.

Ok, please put your thinking caps on:

A man and his cousin (also male) each have a grandson. How are the two grandkids related to each other? I ask because one is my stepson and he is playing basketball in a tourney this weekend against his counterpart, so a lot of extended family are milling around.

One more question. Is the $10 a month Spotify subscription worth it for an android phone? Above mentioned kid wants to stream music in the locker room.

December 13, 2014 @ 12:27 PM

A quick comment after saying leaving for a while.

Imminently I'm going to be a GrandPa for the 1st time as son & wife in birthing room now in Ottawa hospital.

My son was born Dec. 2nd, I was born Dec. 29th & now him/her will be born Dec. 13th.

OH wait that's 12/13/14 - Numerolgy.

December 13, 2014 @ 2:43 PM

A GrandPa for 1st time - baby boy. Everett David named after my late Dad (his middle name) & his Father David.

Very emotional phone call especially when he said the name. Baby, Mom (slight problems but OK) & Dad are fine.

Grandpa is celebrating now.

December 13, 2014 @ 3:51 PM

Congratulations , I'll be a 1st time grandpa sometime in January.

Loved TPOH, especially Love Junk.

December 13, 2014 @ 7:09 PM

They're not on until 10:45 and they have tickets at the door, if for some reason you feel like coming downtown :P

Love Love Junk, but I think The Downward Road is their best, and phenomenal in general.

Don't really dislike any of their music, but One-Sided Story is pretty awkward. I saw them around ~2006 for the first time, and it was an amazing show. They played until they didn't know any more songs; I recall it being around 3 hours or so.

I was the youngest person there by 10 years at least. Pretty awkward ... lots of balding men. Those who brought wives with them were getting dragged out a few songs in.

December 13, 2014 @ 7:51 PM

@Raptors Devotee
Seriously, that's your genius marketing plan?
Are you trying to sell Art Shoppe condos or sabotage Art Shoppe condos?

Aw sorry.

Just haven't been paying attention to concerts in the last few months like I used to -- lost my job for a while, so I was trying to pretend they just didn't exist.

December 14, 2014 @ 1:04 AM

Congrats Dale. that's nice. My coyotes had a 3 to 2 lead after two periods, but they blew it and lost 4 to 3 in a fricken shootout. The Leafs won as well. My Nets did win though. Anyway, my Ravens will win today. They're going to beat the Jags. I can't wait until I get my money. Oh, Seahawks will win as well. I don't really like the Seahawks, but they're in my pool. I wish I would get the money now, but I have to wait until the season is over at least.

December 14, 2014 @ 6:24 AM

The Seahawks won last night as well so I have three more wins added up to my pool. I have so many people pissed off with me, it's not funny. They think it's not fair and if I would have dropped a team, I would have been really close. Well, I won the football pool and I'm getting the money. One awesome Superbowl is coming up, Ravens and Cardinals. The Leafs won unfortunately and the Raptors won and my Suns lost. That sucks.
