Daily Photo: Black Lives Still Matter

Black Lives Still MatterI spotted this protest banner hanging over Lake Shore Blvd West by Palais Royale during a bike ride with the kids this afternoon. It reads "BLACK LIVES STILL MATTER #DONTSHOOT".

I hate when Canadians take on American causes when there are problems at home that need our attention. Part of the problem is we consume so much of their media we think their problems are our own. They aren't.

Americans don't need us lecturing to them anyway.

Agree 100%, Glen.

Besides, its a stupid banner. Of course their lives' matter - as do everyone else.

Amnesty International was on the ground
in Ferguson.
Is our record in Toronto
so perfectly
Perhaps the signage
is relevant.

August 27, 2014 @ 9:27 AM

Amnesty Intl is now a joke. At one time, they were useful but now they're simply corrupt.

You might be right about A.I.
I don't know.
But certainly the situation there should
be investigated by somebody
who thinks all lives matter.

I can think of something that
should be investigated:
The lives of aboriginal women

August 27, 2014 @ 9:56 AM

All lives matter. Race, creed, colour make no difference.

@argie -

admit it.. you think Mike Brown was a troublemaker right?

The National Post
might be playing the role of
'Indian Agent' here

August 27, 2014 @ 11:00 AM

From evrything I've read, Mike Brown was a good kid trying to get into college. The NY Times ran an article saying he was "no angel" because he dabbled in pot and alcohol....

Show me a teenager that hasn't!!!!

This was a tragic incident, but these race riots (incited by people like Al Sharpton) do nothing to help the situation. All it does is feed into the stereotype.

Now, I can't imagine what it's like to be a black man in Missouri (or anywhere for that matter). But, if I were an African American, I'd tell people like Sharpton to shut the fuck up and let the investigation run it's course. If there really was no reason for the officers actions, then he should be charged like anyone else who shoots an unarmed person causing no harm. It's murder plain and simple. But Sharpton and his ilk fuelling the fires does nothing to help race relations in the US.

August 27, 2014 @ 11:13 AM

Since the RCMP and StatsCan both have data that shows that between 1980 and 2012, the were between 700 - 1000 more aboriginal men murdered than aboriginal women, I'm not sure why calls for an inquiry only focus on women.

Well said, Phil.

Too bad whoever made that sign
didn't think of 'signing' it:

William Peyton Hubbard

August 27, 2014 @ 11:35 AM

@admin user
The only thing I know about this guy is that he held up a variety store recently.

August 27, 2014 @ 11:35 AM

@ Argie - Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but I had heard nothing about that. Everything I have read says that he was a good kid.

August 27, 2014 @ 11:45 AM

this guest

Oh come on Argie
he was never accused of any such thing
next you'll say
he was hanging out at 15 Windsor Rd.
in Etobicoke and
exchanging packages with a convicted criminal
in gas stations

August 27, 2014 @ 11:58 AM

@this guest & Phil
I'm all for justice and if the cop maliciously killed him, the cop should be charged. However, even if he did kill him, it doesn't give anyone the right to riot and steal a flat screen TV.

being accused of
stealing a box of cigars
is not 'holding up a store'
although apparently it merits
the death sentence in Missouri
if you are a black teenager
and not even found guilty.

And you probably agree he deserved to die.
thinking it secretly.

August 27, 2014 @ 12:09 PM

@this guest
No point debating with a person like you.

August 27, 2014 @ 12:11 PM

No point at all Argie.
I see right through you.

August 27, 2014 @ 12:13 PM

I withdraw my last two statements
and apologize to Argie.
I cannot read Argie's mind and do not believe
he would wish for anybody innocent to be shot.

I'm sorry Argie. Seriously.
I had no right to say that about you.

although you align yourselves with some of the worst
right wing type mindsets I believer you are a good person.

That's all.

August 27, 2014 @ 12:17 PM

@this guest
Thank you for your apology.

Incidentally, being right wing doesn't automatically make you racist. People forget, the Democrats in the US and the KKK supported each other for the longest time.

August 27, 2014 @ 12:52 PM

@ Argie -

"I'm all for justice and if the cop maliciously killed him, the cop should be charged. However, even if he did kill him, it doesn't give anyone the right to riot and steal a flat screen TV."

I agree 100%

"Then...and only then...can they get their toys back"

I think people should watch this to get an understanding of how many problems exist in Missouri and more specifically Ferguson.

This isn't a right vs. left. This is a problem with racism pure and simple.

August 27, 2014 @ 1:32 PM

Oh goodie, an annoying, one-sided British Jon Stewart wannabee!

August 27, 2014 @ 1:59 PM

Ben Vidal

What's one sided about the militarization of the US police forces? Or Doraville population of 8500 received a tank??? Or Bear-cats patrolling streets in Detroit?

How about St Louis police lieutenant told his force to arrest black people while they were shopping. With claims from his co-workers that he was making statements that they need to go out and fill the jails by having a black day, so that they can add color to the prisons?

Or that 86% of police stops are on black citizens while the population is only 63%? or that white people as a % were caught with more contraband.

I don't understand how when salient points that can't be disputed suddenly become one-sided.

August 27, 2014 @ 2:18 PM

John Oliver is even better than Stewart.

August 27, 2014 @ 2:45 PM

This sign reminded me of the Tamil protests a number of years ago in Toronto that shut down the Gardiner Expressway.

It didn't make sense to me why you would inconvenience Canadians on a major highway to protest a foreign civil war. Canada has nothing to do with the human right violations happening in Sri Lanka nor the motorists have the power to stop the bloodshed there. The entire demonstration was pointless.
As is a sign in a foreign country protesting what's happening in Missouri.
