Open Mike (Better Than The Avengers!)

Open Mike (Better Than The Avengers!)I haven't seen The Avengers yet, but I'll bet you have. I hear it's pretty good, but it can't possibly be as good as this Open Mike.

It was a quieter week in the city. Our mayor didn't mug a single reporter, the 2nd round of the NHL playoffs is winding down and men all across the GTA are wondering what to get their mothers for Mother's Day. You're welcome for the reminder.

False!

This is not yet better than The Avengers.

Although if you include Spider-Man, I may reconsider.

I am totally indifferent for the rest of the NHL playoffs. Between disliking Ovi and Torterella evenly, and not wanting to see either of them win, I don't think I care what happens. Ummm...go Kings?

I see Spidey showed up. It's time to reconsider.

@Rob

I'm with you... I find myself rooting for the Kings. I think I dislike Philadelphia so damn much that I want the Kings to win just so Carter and Richards host the cup a season after being dumped.

Go Kings... I guess.

Was a huge comic book fan growing up, and loved the resurgence of comic book movies including Raimis Spider-Man, the Batman reboot, the first Iron Man etc., but after seeing The Avengers this week, I think I've come to the realization that I may finally be getting too old for this shit. My patience is wearing very thing with extended action sequences and I found the constant fight scenes tedious rather than thrilling. Not that I hated the movie exactly, it's more I can't get into them anymore.

@ Not Dean, according to iTunes, H&F are #20 on the "What's Hot" list, 2 spots beneath the Ricky Gervais podcast. Have to assume there's more than a couple dozen listeners.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two Spider-Man movies from Raimi. I've never seen the 3rd one, because I've been warned not to.

I dig those first two X-Men flicks, too... and the latest one was sweet as well.

And yes, these new Batman films are wicked good.

It seems Marvel has licensed out their Intellectual Property in such a fashion that we can't see them all together. DC doesn't have that problem, as DC is owned by Warner Bros which retains the rights.

It's quite simple, if you don't like the content, don't listen to the free podcast. If you like it, be glad it's served up hot and fresh every single weekday.

As for how much money they're making, let me ask you this... how much money does Dean Blundell make? How much does Mike Stafford make? How much does Mad Dog make? Or John Derringer? Or Bob McCown?

You don't know because they keep that info private. Humble and Fred are entitled to do the same.

May 11, 2012 @ 2:14 PM

@Corey

I don't mind the extended actions scenes...in fact I think it’s necessary for superhero movies.

My criticism is that being a long-time comic reader I don't like the liberties they take with the story lines to make them more accessible to the general public....these aren’t my Avengers!

Apparently the guy running it will have some fun with the people singing, and as they sing along, instead of the audience seeing just the lyrics on the monitors, he'll flash quick pictures of penises and stuff, a la Fight Club.

Agreed Mississauga Phil, it sets the bar low for the under achievers, and penalises the guys who want to do an honest days work and not have to do the heavy lifting of the under achievers.
My father once was his unions business agent, and he used to say that 90% of his work was looking after the 10% who were the shiite disturbers.

If I was the type of person to use the C-Word, I would have to say Bristol Palin fits the bill.

"Sometimes dads should lead their family in the right ways of thinking," Palin wrote Thursday. "In this case, it would’ve been nice if the President would’ve been an actual leader and helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of 'Glee.' @TorontoMike @Not Dean

While I recognize Not Dean is likely just looking to stir up shit, he is entitled to ask that question on this blog.

Recall Mike that in the early stages of the Humble & Fred podcast you were quick to point out their immediate success. Posts talked about the large number of downloads that were well beyond their expectations.

Further to that, they did denigrate radio publicly only later to use that same medium to market their podcast going so far as to crawl in bed with them. That would be akin to Harper crawling in bed with Layton just to pass a bill. Do I need to say more?

So, in a world where haters rules dude, you shouldn't expect anything different.

As I stated her before... when working with the new media you need to let your product grow organically. Success is not measured by shear numbers. It's measured by those that passionately believe in what you do. Think Michael Franti who carved out a successful career without lowering his standards just to draw in fans.

BTW Mike. Deadmau5 sold out The Air Canada Centre. Ain't the new world order amazing eh. Artists that sell out major stadiums just by sticking to their craft rather than selling out or relying on cheap promotion.

Perhaps there is a message for H&F in that. And for those types that spend too much of their musical time living in the past reminiscing about Pearl Jam or Wendel Clark

May 11, 2012 @ 9:31 PM

Not Dean is just looking to stir up shit man. And it's very likely Not Dean is a radio dude of some sort.

Radio dudes are notorious haters man. They take absolute pleasure in trashing and hating each other. Why do you think I like taunting and annoying them so much? These are the guys that will pick apart H&F's show, what they do, etc. Of course I see very few of them going ahead and doing something like this.

As for the content of the show, well so what if it's low brow humour. It exists all over the dial and some of it is pretty successful too. Not sure why people shit on them for going down that route.

Personally, if I was H&F, I'd say fuck the podcast and put forth the effort & money toward a real bricks and mortar business. I don't know, build a pub theme'd around 102.1 or something. It would probably do well very well in Toronto.

@Irvine; it does appear that you do actually like the sound of your own drivel. The funny thing is that you being a self appointed volunteer mentor for 100's of drug addicts, seems to be addicted to the balderdash that comes the limited reach of your mind. As well, when you reduce your mindless tirades with childish profanity, it does draw one to a conclusion that you are like a teenager who cannot bring enough actual knowledge to even enter a debate.

@Irvine, if you think by you giving a fellow like Mississauga Phil advise on the positive effects of drug smoking and the reactions of his children when they eventually try it are positive, think again. If you were a mentor or counsellor to 100's of addicts and you claim the MJ is good, I am baffled.
The point here is that you are just another keyboard warrior, that likes to think you have something to add, when ultimatley it is hot air prating.
This is not even a debate as clearly like then you really have nothing to add now.
PS, remember you have to move out of your parents basement before you can become a man.

And telling me to move out of my parents basement. THAT is the best retort you have? C'mon dude. Entertain me at least. At least put some actual thought into it.

And what's wrong with living in my parent's basement? Some of the most bad ass psychopathic freak-shows lived in their parents basements. Don't you watch Criminal Minds? The combination of the moist air, bad mold and isolation makes for wonderous ideas

Typical of you, however I did not expect you to understand the word prating and it appears again I am right. It is quite obvious you cannot debate when your arsenal consists of civil war era weapons and I clearly have the nuclear bombs to drop at will.
Go try to find a friend, we may have all perished by the time that happens.

May 13, 2012 @ 4:31 PM

Irvine

@Dave:

Dude "hot air prating" is poor English. Allow me to explain. The term "hot air" used in the manner you're using it pretty much has the same meaning as prate (prating). You're saying the same thing twice. It would be like saying hot air pontificating. Or hot air babble.

Now prate could be used in a manner like this

"his endless prating"
"his self righteous prating"
"his annoying prating"

It's like using the term "irregardless" or people that spell congratulations, congradulations.

May 13, 2012 @ 5:01 PM

Dave Williams

You just proved how little you know about the english language. Congratulations, you are officially a moron. I however did not want to insult all morons. I will bet if you speak with your addict friends, they may be able to recommend a remedial english writing course for you.

@Dave

I could chide you for your lack of punctuation in the "I however" sentence. And I could chide you for not capitalizing "English" on English language.

BUT, if I was to do that you would write a poorly verbalized reply which would mention my "addict friends" then, two sentences later, mention I have no friends and everyone will "perish" before I get a friend. You would then tell me that your online arsenal consists of nuclear warheads such as the uber terrifying "you live in your parents basement". THEN Dave, you would make the claim that you don't stoop to childish insults only to call me a "moron". I mean, anyone that's been around TorontoMike for a while knows no one has EVER called me a moron before. *lol*

This cycle would continue indefinitely Dave. Sort of like a series of poorly configured switches prior to the Spanning Tree procotol. I shudder at that.

And I shudder at Toronto Mike, his mobile device ringing endlessly as we each post. Especially given it's Mom's day and he's probably treating his wife too something nice with his kids.

So I couldn't do that to Toronto Mike man. We're not friends or anything but even a asshole like me isn't about to allow YOU to flood his blog with useless bullshit. It's just how I am slick. It's MY job to flood his blog with useless shit

I'm off to the interior of BC for the week. Revelstoke to be exact. Feel free to drop by Dave. We'll hit the pub, have some great BC beer and good food.

I would simply like to see an open-ness to full salary disclosure throughout society. That doesn't mean a company Union.

'Fair' Wages would likely climb (and adjust down) for some. A person couldn't langish privately via a management and HR team at dollar amount X when another colleague is [always quietly] making Y% more. None of this "Well, she's a single mother, or attractive, or a crony of a crony, or he's got 17 years exp., or a padded degree crap, so YOU get less / THEY get more" - just do the job, and to the best performance needs then go the best in pay. Mid-level careerists wouldn't be able to hide behind the publicity of only their upper levels' pay either. Nor would people stagnate in office rut; every other company would be able to make a decent competitive offer. "So and so's alright? At that amount? Then let's talk. Maybe it's worth a change of scenery".
