Edith Bunker's Rape Laugh Track

tvI missed All in the Family, being only four years old when it went off the air, but I'm certain I would have liked it. The episodes I've seen in syndication seem more daring and smarter than the sitcoms we have today.

The episodes around Edith Bunker's 50th birthday surprise and "the rape" have permeated popular culture to a point where I felt I'd seen them, only I hadn't. I hadn't seen this episode until this morning, so I didn't realize how uncomfortable it must have been to watch.

It's uncomfortable because the subject matter is so serious, yet there are still jokes and laughter from the live studio audience. Here's the clip (skip to 10:31), if you don't mind that uneasy, uncomfy feeling.

Wasn't that bizarre? Did anyone see this episode during it's initial run? How was it received then?

Romy

This show was one of the best of all time. It lampooned bigotry and tackled issues that many shy away from today... Yes children, this was TV before the dark days of so-called reality television.

Good God! I'm agreeing with Romy and Mike.....

Awesome show - great writing, great acting. Was able to catch most episodes on re-runs and to this day, its writing still stands up to anything on TV. Archie was great - a role model for me (just kidding).

But while he was a bigot, he had a heart and the episode his daughter and Mike leave for California is a tear-jerker. If you haven't seen, watch it.

I was 14 when it started - the first few seasons were magic. I still feel it was the best show tv has ever offered...and I still steal some of Archie's lines. His take on gun control was a classic.
