Kerry Fraser Day

Kerry Fraser Is BlindA glove tap to Down Goes Brown for this one. It was 16 years ago tonight that Kerry Fraser blew the call that cost us Leaf fans a berth in the Stanley Cup finals. I wrote about it over six years ago (man, I've been blogging a long time) in an open letter to God.

What exactly do you have against my Toronto Maple Leafs? Why to you use your omnipotent power to crush us at every opportunity? You tortured us with the Harold Ballard regime, forcing me to grow up in a decade almost completely void of playoff victories. Then, when everything lined up perfectly for a Habs-Leafs Stanley Cup Final in '93, you gave The Great One yet another break and used your mighty power to blind the refs as Gretzky clearly high-sticked Gilmour. We deserved to win that night. You made sure it didn't happen.

Here's that non-call we'll never forget.

DGB has a great picture we can print and hang on our cubicle walls today. Happy Kerry Fraser Day!

I'm a huge Leaf fan but from that reply, it doesn't look like Gretzky high-sticked him. Maybe a poke with his stick at waste level, but that's it.

BTW, great hair on Fraser, eh?

Mike from Lowville

Doug should at least have an Oscar nomination under his belt after that one!

Guys, take a look at the 2nd poster - you can clearly see the toe of the stick in Doug's face.

If He didn't high stick Gilmour where did the cut come from??? And yes Dougie did "emphsize" the High Stick.

Holy Smokes what a stretch ... even for a Leaf fan. My memory is at a -don't care-, but was Gilmour unable to play after that incident? Was there not a Game 7 at MLG that they could have won? Are you saying that the only way they could beat LA was to have Gretzky off the ice, which in fact says that the Leafs were not the better team?
Sorry buddy, but 16 years later have the pucks to admit the better team won.

Big Leafs fan here, but agree with LEW...get over it. I played Div. 1 Hockey. There are a 100+ instances in any game that lead to victory or defeat, not one call, and frankly sick of the excuse. Chances are blog meister you never competed, you have a gut and live life through your laptop, TV and our beloved Leafs. Move on, think about the thousands of split second calls a ref makes in a career during one of the quickest sports in the world. Give it a try some time and you will be healed, even Dougie moved on.
